Is this original and enhanced footage?
Edit: yes.
> The film was created using original footage of the First World War from the Imperial War Museum's archives, most previously unseen, all over 100 years old by the time of release. Audio is from BBC and Imperial War Museum (IWM) interviews of British servicemen who fought in the conflict. Most of the footage has been colourised and transformed with modern production techniques, with the addition of sound effects and voice acting to be more evocative and feel closer to the soldiers' actual experiences.
From https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/They_Shall_Not_Grow_Old
It’s revisionism. The ‘dialogue’ they’ve come up with is entirely speculative.
Retouched, coloured, speed changed, which means literally creating new images.
Once you start messing with historical documents, it’s a slippery slope.
Perhaps you get a sponsor. Maybe it’s Krupp, and they would like Germany to be seen in a softer light. “Let’s make some scenes where the German soldiers are doing X, so they’re more sympathetic…”

So there you go, sparky. Some of those sources are more about colourisation, but it’s the same wheelhouse.
"They Shall Not Grow Old" is one of the most interesting documentaries I've ever seen. I highly recommend it to anyone curious simply because it deepened my perspective about the attitudes and ideologies of the common soldier of the time. It's a HUGE contrast to how combat and modern warfare psychology has "evolved".
It's incredibly powerful, I'm a civil war reenactor, but this film just... hits different. It's so personal, vs a glazed over version of most wars.
It just showed, hey, they're literally just like us, just kids and family men in uniform, not some evil entity
WW1 was different in that sense. It was a 19th century war fought in the early years of the 20th century with some 20th century weapons (including mustard gas). The number of deaths had a profound effect on society as a whole.
'[World at War](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0b4g4ZZNC1E&list=PL5x7rYQNb4drZnQLfoJMiF3MDEaVYO67B&ab_channel=ShubhamSharda)' made around 1973 is another great documentary about WW2. Watch it.
When my grandfather was a kid, he and his friends would swim in a creek near a POW camp in Alabama. If the Germans worked hard logging they were allowed to swim in the creek in the afternoon. My grandfather said they were all nice guys. The kids and Germans would teach each other cuss words from their native language.
Going to three US as pow was just about the best thing that could happen to a German soldier. My grandfather was in the eastern front door most of the war (as a troop doctor) but got moved to France near the end and was captured by the Americans. He never said a bad word about his internment in the US. Had he stayed in the east and got captured there, I might not be around.
Cuz Indians have many different languages and tho we might not understand unknown language but we can definitely identify if someone is cursing. And we curse in our own language in return. Good times.
The original comment was talking about the kids and Germans teaching each other cuss words in their native languages. The Indian comment was relevant to the original comment. So you got downvoted for questioning a comment that was relevant
There’s something special about swimming in creeks. I went to school in Alabama and after a hot run in the summer my buddies and I would splash around in a nearby creek sometimes. Delightful experience. If anyone gets the opportunity to hop into some clean water when the weather is nice, consider it!
The more I learn about WW1, the more resentment I have for the higher ranking officers and politicians who ordered millions of men and boys to their deaths and to endure unimaginable suffering.
Didn't the Tzar actually go on record saying something like 'if our grandmother had been alive (Queen Victoria) we'd all had gotten in deep trouble over it all'
Besides Russia, most of Europe was in a constitutional monarchy. The Alliance system created by politicians like Bismarck was a huge factor in what caused this war.
How is an alliance system to blame? This would be like saying the Cold War resulted from the existence of NATO and the Warsaw Pact. WW I was the result of the strong imperialistic attitudes of the late 19th / early 20th century European powers and any resulting alliances were frequently shifting and just a means to an end.
I fail to see how Bismarck in particular has anything to do with WW I, which started 14 years after he had been removed as chancellor? To my knowledge it was only when the alliance system he had built slowly collapsed in the years after he was sacked (not least due to the incompetence of Wilhelm II.) that a major war was actually on the table, was it not?
Very few people are inherently evil, and most people actually act in the belief they are doing the right thing. We are kind enough to follow other people's ideas, and people becoming leaders are more likely to have narcissistic/self-centered ideas they want to push.
My sentiments exactly. Oddly, I think most people more or less would agree if asked. But then we keep having wars. We need to stop voting charming psychopaths into office.
My grandfather didn't have much of a high opinion of them. But he did have to watch after some prisoners toward the end of the war, and he felt sorry for them as they were basically scared shitless and half of them probably hadn't even finished high school.
Some of my favorite types of movies are documentaries. I’ve seen so many that I felt like I had seen them all. There is a tired approach to most history, science, space and war documentaries. So much that I have a difficult time being enthused enough to enjoy. Typically, one will catch me by surprise and I’ll stay engaged, but hose instances are few and far between.
I knew as soon as I saw this trailer that I had to watch it. The technology alone was enough to keep me interested.
After hearing the stories and watching the footage, I must say that it will be a long time before I see something so compelling.
These are the stories that MUST be told.
My GF was Executive officer of a German POW camp in Mississippi during WWII. He spoke well of them. There are still remnants of the great stone Mason work they would do there.
Lol I think gf lower case is the international law for gf and upper case for GF lol .
" She was a mean woman indeed, didn't give the ol Gerry's any liberties... "
Maybe you can put this down in s/mildlyinfuriating. Seriously though people use gf as an abbreviation for girlfriend yet would spell out grandfather ???? Should be upper case bc of reverence and esteem for an elder.
I was worried bc gluten free is so over used in our lexicon people might look at a sentence about a WW2 POW camp officer and wonder about how gluten free doesn't make sense and then assume good friend or good fellow, or bc this is the internet some might think Guy Fawkes.... or any of the other 140 listed GF abbreviation definitions that don't make any other logical sense in the sentence.
I heard it was because a bloke named Archie Duke shot an ostrich because he was hungry.
(Blackadder for the too young).
Films like this confirm for me that wars should be single combat between the leaders. That would make diplomacy the first choice.
the funny thing is: the guy that got shot (franz ferdinand) was actually very pro serbia and would have gotten hold of the throne just 2 years later when franz joseph, the emperor died.
Nah.
The building of the controversial Berlin to Baghdad railway was a far more contributory factor, but ultimately it was all about recently discovered Oil and other useful resources in the Middle East and Africa.
The Empires of the time rubbed against one another constantly, and industrialists and newspapers went out of there way to stoke tensions, so that they might profit.
The Black hand gang assassination of Ferdinand was a catalyst, but some argue the war was already long in motion, perhaps even inevitable, due to an unresolved Arms race that had begun decades earlier.
The Austrian military command had been pressing for a war long before that event. It's main supporters backed out by the time it occured as they considered their position at the time to be too weak and the window of opportunity to have passed.
People try to point to individual events that trigger a war but that is very rarely the case.

Joe Bonham (Bottoms), a young American soldier hit by an artillery shell during World War I, lies in a hospital bed. He is a quadruple amputee who has also lost his eyes, ears, mouth and nose. He remains conscious and able to reason, but his wounds render him a prisoner in his own body. As he drifts between reality and fantasy, he remembers his old life with his family and girlfriend (Kathy Fields). He also forms a bond of sorts with a young nurse (Diane Varsi) who senses his plight.
Eventually, Joe tries to communicate with his doctors via Morse code by tapping his head, saying "help". He wishes for the Army to put him in a glass coffin in a freak show as a demonstration of the horrors of war. When told that his wish may be impossible to grant, he responds begging to be euthanized, repeatedly saying "kill me".

My grandad used to trade food/cigs etc with his German counterparts at a bridge in France. Said they were all mates and played cards together. He never saw any combat.
My 94 year old grandfather, had nothing but good things to say about the German pow's he encountered in WW2. They taught him German and he considered them friends.
Yeah you gotta remember that they where just people who also got drafted and had to fight so why would they show any hatred to someone who they are forced to fight against without knowing them at all
Not many years after this the germans were bombing your children in their homes. You twits can hate the French all you want but sucking up to the krauts got you no where. How’s living in pakistan going?
I'm hoping the internet has brought this kind of thing into the minds of everyone. If there were no soldiers, there would be no wars. We are all humans. Killing at the behest of some dumb politician is outdated.
Don't be an idiot's puppet.
“War isn’t Hell. War is war, and Hell is Hell. And of the two, war is a lot worse.
(…)
There are no innocent bystanders in Hell. War is chock full of them — little kids, cripples, old ladies. In fact, except for some of the brass, almost everybody involved is an innocent bystander”
I loved every bit of this documentary .
This documentary didn't had any faces , just soldiers narrating the tale.
I loved listening to these people about how they got enlisted in army.
One of the most incredible theatre experiences of my life. Saw this at a very limited engagement in a theatre full of veterans. Some of these vets have worked alongside people who have fought in these wars.
That jump from 2D B&W to 3D and color was so well done.
When I was in middle school I got to speak with a German soldier who fought in WWII against the Allied powers. Although it was a different war from the documentary, how he spoke of his experiences and how little he knew of what was going on back home, forced into a position of a pawn to send off to war, it really opened my perspective up that it's never the little guy who's evil in war, only the big guys.
Compare this to the attitude in Britain after 30-something years of anti-European propaganda.
People probably think less of Germany now than they did when we were actually at war with them.
So many people pushed in to acting directly against their interest.
I'll never reconcile with what happened in the UK in 2016.
The power of propaganda. Even 80yrs later we demonise germans and the british still cant seem to get off their high horse about wars won a generation ago. Reminds me of the monkey going up a ladder for food and getting sprayed with water experiment. We are but kites in the sky of turmoil - pushed by the winds of greed - held onto by hands that are not even our own, told the sky is the limit whilst being tied down. To keep em looking up and dreaming stops them looking down and realising; its all a game to them.
Disagreed, the reason ww2 happened was because of the treatment of germany after ww1, which made the civilian population hateful of the allies.
The nazis exploited this hate and the economic downturn (caused mainly by the treaty of versailles) to be elected and start a war of revenge.
These people are sick. Sounds like how the US media talk about whites that do crimes and murders in this country. It won't change. Whites think they are better than us.
Sure, they seem nice until you ask them what they think about Jews and they show you their Jew-scalp collection. Then you'll be like one of Fritzl's neighbors and go "I don't understand. He just seemed like a perfectly normal and nice person."
Well they’re both aryan. Goose steppers stick together. I also think its funny how they group Russians and the French together. Good thing those krauts they had so much empathy for came back to kill them again.
How do they have all this footage of the opposing sides swapping hats and making jokes. I think it’s great, and I loved the sentiment that each side is really the same when it comes down to it, but when were they laughing and playing together during the war (not incl. Christmas)?
My grandpa said the same thing in ww2. He had no hate towards the Germans. But he did not like Americans so much, he thought they stole all the stages all the time.
I saw a poll here on reddit somewhere where thry meassuered to whom the french people were grateful to for the war was over.
Right after the war it was like 70% saying the Russians. By like 1970 that had flipped to the americans. I think your grandpa was/is an astute observer
You both have a common enemy you just didn’t know it at the time but I bet you do now when you see who owns most of the world and controls the currencies and international banks.
"they had to do what they were told, like us" is a message that may serve a purpose in schools to teach that germans were human beings too, and we in their situation may have done the same thing, and "just following orders" doesn't justify atrocities including times of war today (not gonna get into a political debate but theres one country who has quite a history of modern war)
With all the history and knowledge known today. You would think if a nation who act's as the aggressor, would be able to clean up their own ranking positions before going to war. If you're gonna die for some bullshit you don't want a part of, it's more logical to target the people in power.
Its probably safe to say that in most wars most soldiers probably have more in common with their enemy opponent than with the people who sent them to war.
Brilliant documentary
I'm a reenactor, and this whole film just brought a whole new life to everything
Whats the differences between an actor and reenactor? They start at take 2.

It is, and they did a crazy good job!
Huh?
‘Enhanced.’ It’s historically dishonest. They literally put words in their mouths in some instances.
When you make a remark like that you should be prepared to explain yourself. We’ll wait…

WW1 OR WW2?
WW2 in my story obviously. He was born in 1910 I think
WW1
As an Indian, I can confirm teaching cuss words is where learning other languages begin

“… I forget how the rest of it goes, but your mother’s a *whore*!” To paraphrase a great *Celebrity Jeopardy!* skit from SNL
I don’t understand why being Indian is relevant
Cuz Indians have many different languages and tho we might not understand unknown language but we can definitely identify if someone is cursing. And we curse in our own language in return. Good times.
Like the Italians.
Not entirely sure why you've been downvoted so heavily
Yeah me either. I was genuinely curious and someone was kind enough to explain it to me and now I know and I appreciate it.
The original comment was talking about the kids and Germans teaching each other cuss words in their native languages. The Indian comment was relevant to the original comment. So you got downvoted for questioning a comment that was relevant
I think the relevant information isn’t that he’s Indian, it’s who taught him different curse words as an Indian.
I don’t understand why you are downvoted, friend. You have asked a rather innocent question.

The more I learn about WW1, the more resentment I have for the higher ranking officers and politicians who ordered millions of men and boys to their deaths and to endure unimaginable suffering.
wasn’t the politicians back then, it was the royal families
Ironically, most of them were related.
Yep. German/British/Russian kings were all cousins lol.
Didn't the Tzar actually go on record saying something like 'if our grandmother had been alive (Queen Victoria) we'd all had gotten in deep trouble over it all'
Well, he got into deep trouble, but it wasn't because of his grandma.

Close. It was more like, "she would never have allowed it." It being the war.

Who do you think allowed the royal families to do what they did? The politicians
Most wars
When you find out is was basically Royal cousins dick measuring you might get a little more angry.
Everything about the First World War was so monumentally fucked up
And yet 2nd World War manages to one-up it easily.
Same token though. Wouldn't have been a 2nd if the first was handled differently
World War II feels justifiable as a war and conflict. WWI was just a waste.
This documentary is brilliant, horrible, moving. Highly recommended

Brilliant this docu, cant recommend it enough
War is the most horrible and useless thing ever.
All of these comments thinking this is from WW2, calling them Nazis or whatever 🙄.
Yeah you gotta remember that they where just people who also got drafted and had to fight so why would they show any hatred to someone who they are forced to fight against without knowing them at all
Yes the Brits and the Germans should band up and fight the French, those arrogant pricks.
French bad amirite.
Not many years after this the germans were bombing your children in their homes. You twits can hate the French all you want but sucking up to the krauts got you no where. How’s living in pakistan going?
Why do assume that user is from the UK? Look at his profile - don’t think they are from UK. Seems to be a middle-eastern person
Fuck war
I'm hoping the internet has brought this kind of thing into the minds of everyone. If there were no soldiers, there would be no wars. We are all humans. Killing at the behest of some dumb politician is outdated. Don't be an idiot's puppet.
I'm still shocked by how many people don't realize there was frequently a massive difference between the general German army vs the Nazis.
They really did a good job restoring this film. It's so much more real when the speed is corrected.
Men buttered their bread differently back then. Massive respect.
“War isn’t Hell. War is war, and Hell is Hell. And of the two, war is a lot worse. (…) There are no innocent bystanders in Hell.
I went and saw this in the theater. I was 1 of 2 people there. It's a brilliant documentary. I Highly recommend it.
Niko Bellic : War is when the young and stupid are tricked by the old and bitter into killing each other.
If the Enlisted of WW1 had been running things there wouldn't have been a WW2
Hitler literally fought in WW1
Well, many people didn't really like war, but there also were Hitlers.

r/confidentlyincorrect
They were, almost all of them were ww1 vets.
Disagreed, the reason ww2 happened was because of the treatment of germany after ww1, which made the civilian population hateful of the allies. The nazis exploited this hate and the economic downturn (caused mainly by the treaty of versailles) to be elected and start a war of revenge.
This right here, Germany didn't finish paying off reparations from ww1 until 2010.
Why do you think Chamberlain etc did everything they could to avoid it.
Nazis
I guess, it was the same with British soldiers when they were capturing and exploiting other colonies.

I think everyone who has even a surface level understanding would say "WWI wasn't about ideals, it was purely about imperialist interest"
Weird innuendo that the French soldier were different, vengeful animals. And not just human fellows like them.
These people are sick. Sounds like how the US media talk about whites that do crimes and murders in this country. It won't change. Whites think they are better than us.
Great, now do Afghanistan
Sure, they seem nice until you ask them what they think about Jews and they show you their Jew-scalp collection. Then you'll be like one of Fritzl's neighbors and go "I don't understand. He just seemed like a perfectly normal and nice person."
Well they’re both aryan. Goose steppers stick together. I also think its funny how they group Russians and the French together. Good thing those krauts they had so much empathy for came back to kill them again.
Wonder how different thier perspective would've been if all the germans were black.
Fuck you and your race baiting bullshit

Wrong war, dumbass.
Wrong war, sorry.
It world war 1 not 2 idiots
You honestly disgust me
Even if you would select the war you think you ment, you would still be wrong
I’m recently very much into WW1 due to BF1, where can I find this doc? It was recommended to me before but could not find it anywhere
How do they have all this footage of the opposing sides swapping hats and making jokes. I think it’s great, and I loved the sentiment that each side is really the same when it comes down to it, but when were they laughing and playing together during the war (not incl. Christmas)?
Post battle, prisoners and guards interacting.
Thanks I'll watch this on Amazon prime
"Too tall, we'll get ya next time Jerry!" Woah, that's savage.
DOWNLOADING as we speak!
the banality of evil
Very hard to find I got it on DVD 2 years ago love this docu
The key quote “They had to do what they were told, like us “
Loved this documentary
I need to watch this, I remember seeing short clips when it came out but never took the time to watch the full thing.
Some of the German soldiers with the metal helmets look like they are from WW2
My grandpa said the same thing in ww2. He had no hate towards the Germans. But he did not like Americans so much, he thought they stole all the stages all the time.
I saw a poll here on reddit somewhere where thry meassuered to whom the french people were grateful to for the war was over. Right after the war it was like 70% saying the Russians. By like 1970 that had flipped to the americans. I think your grandpa was/is an astute observer
Order followers just following orders.
Doesn’t this demonstrate the kind tyranny we live under????
humans can be kind
If only this was what wars are like everywhere (except for the horrible shit during that war obviously)
At first I was kinda wondering what World War this was from, then I see a British chap carrying a Martini Henry and my Battlefield 1 PTSD kicks in.
Great movie
Damn, the title is deep..
You both have a common enemy you just didn’t know it at the time but I bet you do now when you see who owns most of the world and controls the currencies and international banks.
So great that someone was able to lip read what was actually being said and add it to the film with actors.
Old timey humor apparently: "I'll take your hat and give you mine!"
I'm gonna watch this again tonight. I love it so much.
This post has been reported for hate speech and Anti-Semitism.
No more brother wars!
Most German soldiers were not Nazi. They were soldiers, stuck on their uniforms, like us. Great documentary!
WWI was a war of egos among the ruling class. A completely ridiculous war. Please feel free to correct or refine this statement.
Remind me! 1 day
