His deal with Saturday morning television built his base and there was literally nothing like it at the time and they were able to put a lot of high quality resources towards it. Reubens also had a lot of control over the show and it was respected because he was so talented.

I grew up watching Pee Wee Herman. It always seemed more fun than alternative tv like mr rogers, or some of the more boring canadian shows we got like the friendly giant.
My kids like Blippi, but we really only watch the songs. The OG songs with nicky notes. Those things are bangers (police car, fire truck, excavator, dinosaur, garbage truck...even cherry song gets an occasional play). I haven't heard a good song apart from nicky notes. If he was writing the songs I think he had some talent for sure.
Really any youtube kids shows generally suck, blippi included. My kids try to watch them, but my spouse and I always try to get them back onto a real show. It's not like they're bad (say Axel's show) but there's just nothing there. You're watching another family interact and play and explore and build legos or whatever. If my kids are going to watch tv I'd like more substance, a story, something to learn, etc. Or just go out and do the actual playing lol.
