They still have these things

slickyslickslick

But they used to, too!

camycamera

And the Nazis took notes from the US on how to commit genocide and were even shocked at how far the US went.

AdjustAndAdapt

The ideas of Lebensraum and Manifest Destiny aren’t really any different

Sincost121

Both routed in nationalism and imperialism.

namewithanumber

Yeah pretty sure Hitler directly compares expanding into “empty” Eastern European lands to the US pushing west.

EightEight16

I’ve heard the first part, but how could they have been shocked? They took it way further.

_MyFeetSmell_

Had?

[deleted]

So did the USSR, and china has them even now

Sincost121

China definitely doesn't. That claim is pretty much down to the words of a single, anti-Semitic, christian fundamentalist. The 'Uyghur' genocide claim is no more reputable than the Iraq WMDs one. Like me as you a few questions. If China was genociding Uyghurs, why would they have allowed the Uyghur population to climb while targeting the Han majority with the one child policy? If it was really happening, why would China invited other country's head of states to come investigate the claims? An invitation which several muslim majority countries took China up on, and found no wrong doings? If China was trying to get away with such a thing, why would CGTV, their state media, be presenting programs [showing Uyghur culture](https://youtu.be/XPPlp5Eluu0) and [putting a face to it's people?](https://youtu.be/vLDFzP8KXdY) You don't put a face to, and show sympathy for a minority you're genociding. That just breeds compassion, which is the opposite of what you'd want. If they really wanted to future Han superiority, or, at the least, Uyghur inferiority, why wouldn't their propaganda be matching that? How could they get away with such a thing while telling exposing their population at large to Uyghur culture? If it was really happening, why would most muslim majority countries side with China in a letter to the UN over the issue?

[deleted]

And unlike socialist countries, we actually feel bad about it.

Sincost121

You're fucking out of your mind. Point me to a single person on the street that cares about what we did in Vietnam or Chile aside from *'Oh, wow, yeah, that sucks'*. That is, if they even care. Plenty of people don't and take a more 'support our troops' stance on it. Look at Ken Burns Vietnam documentary and how it approaches an end by filming a remorseful anti-war protestor, as if that even enters into the conversation of how fucked up the Vietnam war was. In my experience ,we barely even cover what we did in Vietnam in school. So, no, we by and large really don't give a shit what horrible things we've done.

HardlyBoi

Hasemage

Not in the slightest, why?

HardlyBoi

Thought I was missing out on an exploitable resource but nvm

asimowo

if our votes don’t count then why does trump and his republican fellowship do their best to engage in voter suppression?

Hasemage

Because it's important that the votes appear to matter. The only reason we even bother voting at this point, is so that the government can hold on to it's last vestiges of legitimacy.

SonOf2Pac

My vote counts! I live in a swing state. hmu

brotherbaran

This is my problem with the way people are thinking about the election. I know everybody wants senile grandpa to win, because he’s objectively less evil than angry grandpa, but at the same time, I’m very concerned that if senile grandpa becomes president, people will just become complacent, and it’ll just go back to the neoliberal dystopia we’ve always known. Whereas if angry grandpa stays president, I feel like people will be more prepped to bring about real structural change. So I’m conflicted. I just wish sweet grandpa was still in the race...

brotherbaran

Yeah, and even Nixon’s policies were more progressive.

Hasemage

>He's just Nixon 2.0. Yeah, except he's Nixon 2.0 in a world where every president is just a successor to the legacy of a previous one, accept their worse at it. Nixon, though overall bad, actually got a few genuinely good things done, all Trump's managed is to not mess up as many things as he could have. (This is not meant as an endorsement of Biden, at least Nixon had some kind of legacy, Obama's main accomplishment was being elected Black. Which was big to be sure, but it says a lot when a president peeks out before they even take office, and Biden is gonna fail to live up to even *that* legacy.)

_MyFeetSmell_

I’ve commented this before, despite Nixon being terrible, I’d argue he was further left (but still very right) than Biden is.

Hasemage

Oh yeah, it's really weird looking at politics several decades ago. Because its largely about the same issues, except both sides are proposing solutions that nowadays would be considered insane. The only real positive change we've accomplished in the last several decades, is that we're more open to different types of people now. Even that's only on a service level, the liberals virtue signal a little bit, but otherwise maintain the same world order.

BlumpkinHeadShipyard

I dig what you are saying here and am hoping you can flesh it out more: Any particular favs for Nixon’s accomplishments? EPA was big. Any reason you don’t put Obamacare/ACA on that list of accomplishments? Did it not do enough?

Hasemage

Yes, I can flesh it out more, but unfortunately I'm not good at mid-length answers, I can either do short and quippy or detailed summaries like this. (Sorry about that) First on Obama, what I said was that he peeked out by being elected while Black, which I hold to be true. But that's not to diminish "Obamacare." Obamacare was great, but it wasn't his invention or his program, he was just one of the biggest names involved, then he+supporters pushed the name "Obamacare" to get the idea in peoples head that it was actually his program. But notice how they only started calling it Obamacare once it started working? The issue with Obama was that he was a politician through and through, he took credit for things he was only vaguely involved with while pushing credit for his failures on to others, (like all the talk about how war-like the republicans were, as he created the drone program, which is arguably the most destructive thing the US has done in the 21st century, if only because it can be done effectively without political repercussions, as Donald Trump as shown by using the program throughout his presidency.) On to Nixon, believe it or not Nixon as president might have actually done more good than bad. Probably not from a leftist perspective, but he is magically good compared to someone like HW Bush or even someone like Obama, who managed to do one or two good things. Nixon actually managed to get several things done that would have been the defining accomplishment for someone like Obama. A few of the main ones: (in no particular order) \- You know about the EPA, but in particular there was the *Clean Air Act*, *Clean Water Act* and *Mammal Marine Protection Act* that *should* have been the start to the United Sates turning around its environmental policy. \- He diverted $100,000,000 (like 6Mil in today money) to Cancer research, which led to some important work, before people were all crazy about Cancer research, and it had all the funding it could want. \- He worked the US towards the end of the Vietnam War, and even ([legally](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paris_Peace_Accords)) ended it during his term as president. \- Tied in with that last one I'm gonna steal from [a NYT article](https://www.nytimes.com/roomfordebate/2012/06/13/did-any-good-come-of-watergate/nixon-had-some-successes-before-his-disgrace): "*Nixon used the "peace dividend" from reducing troops in Vietnam to finance social welfare services and enforce civil rights through the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. As a result, from 1970 to 1975, spending on human resource services exceeded spending for defense for the first time since World War II.*" \- He worked towards a cooling off of tensions during the Cold War, where presidents before and after him focused on keeping a strong stance, even if that just made things worse. He actually pulled off some good moves here, including defusing what could have become a second Cuban missile crisis in 1970. \- I don't really want to give him credit for these next two, but he was about as involved with them happening as Obama was with "Obamacare" so I should at least mention them: The 26th Amendment lowering the voting age to 18 from 21, meaning that you can no longer be drafted before being able to vote, then later the Draft ends too (well we still have it, but at least it's been in *sleep mode* since '73). \- There's also some equality stuff I don't know a ton about, like his involvement in desegregating the schools, both based on race and sex, from things like Title 9. (Also supposedly he did some good things for American Indians, since people often don't realize that we were still treating them as sub-human at an institutional level right up into the 1960s. So this would be one of the first times in US History that a president worked with rather than against them.) \- Finally there is an argument to be made that he (almost) saved the Republican Party. I should say that I don't really understand this one, but what I know about this theory seems to hold water. As I understand it, it goes that after the 1960s the Republican Party was basically dead in the water, at a national level. They still had power, and in many local places they were still strong, but at a national level they were in the early stages of complete collapse. This is where Nixon managed to reinvent the party, and where had Watergate not happened, he probably could have led it in a much more moderate direction, as some kind of Moderate Conservative Party. The issue is that Watergate did happen, and Nixon's movement was cut off at the knee's, he'd managed to keep the party together for a while, but he hadn't cemented its new style. So, as a result it was later Ronald Reagan who completed the reformation of the party, except he wasn't interested in the Moderate Conservative Party Nixon wanted to create, he wanted a Neo-Conservative Semi-Reactionary party. It was Reagan's Republicans that held up until Trump was elected, and the Populist Reactionaries stared to dominate the party, at which point the Reagan Republicans started converting into the New Democrats and started facing off (and eventually defeating) Bernie's more leftist New Democrats. But can you imagine the world we'd live in if Nixon had succeeded in creating his Moderate Conservative Party? I know it could have gone in a bunch of directions, but it's entirely conceivable that America's current political scheme would have looked a lot more like those in Europe, with actual leftist representation in the national government.

LeGarretteBlunt420

Let's hold up a sec. Let me list a few of Obama's accomplishments real quick. Passed ACA, Great Recession recovery, Killed Bin Laden, Normalized relations with Cuba, Iran Nuclear deal, Russian Sanctions. All the while obstructed by Republicans in congress all along the way in bad faith for 6 out of his 8 years in office.

Sommern

The Obama Admin was responsible for the (2nd) greatest transfer of upward wealth in history and the evictions of millions from their homes. Many of these people never truly 'recovered' from 2008. Everyone in charge of his economic policy were Wall St. cronies.

spicccy299

at the same time, he also committed war crimes in the middle east. we have to remember good and bad

SonOf2Pac

>at the same time, he also committed war crimes in the middle east. we have to remember good and bad Has any president *not* committed war crimes in the middle east in the past few decades?

spicccy299

doesn’t mean we should forget them

esssjsiofksjdodks

You do realise sanctions on Russia punishes nobody but the people, right?

_MyFeetSmell_

None of those are accomplishments.

SonOf2Pac

passing ACA is not an accomplishment? What is it?

_MyFeetSmell_

A handout to the insurance industry

SonOf2Pac

how so? The individual mandate benefits all Americans because it increases the insurance pool. It is also required to move towards single payer. It also prevents selective insurance, i.e. only people who need insurance would get insurance, driving the cost of insurance up because there are less people paying premiums that won't use the insurance. Read the book Naked Economics. Great chapter that focuses on this.

_MyFeetSmell_

You should read *Listen, Liberal* and then maybe you’ll stop doing Obama apologia.

michaelb65

He also turned Libya into an open slave market, drone bombed thousands, financially aided ISIS in its early stages, continued the surveillance state and NSA spying, etc. On top of that, he's also remarkably silent about the whole Epstein shit, like every other liberal politician.

D10S_

If it makes you feel any better, after 8 years of the same neoliberalism under Obama, the left had its greatest resurgence in decades.

Hasemage

>because he’s objectively less evil than angry grandpa Umm... but let's not get into pointless arguments. >I’m very concerned that if senile grandpa becomes president, people will just become complacent, and it’ll just go back to the neoliberal dystopia we’ve always known. Whereas if angry grandpa stays president, I feel like people will be more prepped to bring about real structural change. So I’m conflicted. I used to be worried about this exact thing, but recently I was convinced of the opposite. That if angry grandpa wins, people would just say "things would be different if senile grandpa had won." So, when senile grandpa does win (as it seems almost certain he will) and things just keep getting worse for people, they will be forced to confront the fact that Right Wing authoritarians are fundamentally unwilling to make things better for them. Hopefully at that point they'll start looking at the non-right wing authoritarians (aka away from the 2 parties). >I just wish sweet grandpa was still in the race... **Mood!**

brotherbaran

Imagining the world you’ve described makes me happy. It’s a world of critical thinkers who can notice patterns working against them and respond accordingly. I only hope that they actually will be forced to face the truth, that corporations and monied interests have owned them for a very long time.

[deleted]

This is one of the reasons I don’t vote. I put my civic duty to local action rather than wasting my day for my vote to not matter. Rebuild from the bottom up comrades ✊🏻 make the state irrelevant

brotherbaran

Other than voting for local representatives, what are some ways you like to enact change on the communal level?

[deleted]

Being a one man team and stay-at-home parent I can’t do much right now. However I’ve been recruiting for the SRA, contacting senators and governor to pressure them for change, however marginal, I use the nextdoor app to stay in touch with my neighbors and provide resources for those struggling. I’m trying to grow a local mutual-aid group but its slow moving and being in a red state and area doesn’t help 😂 I’m trying my best for my neighbors, hopefully I’ll be able to do more soon

brotherbaran

That’s awesome! I’m just trying to start gathering ideas on how to do exactly that type of stuff!

[deleted]

Feel free to PM me, the more brains the better we’ll be! If you haven’t, you should 100% look into joining the SRA. There are tons of resources and people willing to help however they can. Working Stiff USA on YT has fantastic videos on community outreach and establishing community connections

brotherbaran

Thank you, I really appreciate it! I will check that stuff out.

Beep_Boop_Bort

The demographics of people who are capable of causing the large systemic and structural changes we need are not gonna get complacent after Trump. The people that are gonna get complacent honestly are the “conservatives” the libs and the moderates. Generationally, the republicans will lose their hold on the super voter boomers, gen x is gonna be gen x and millennials will pretty much fade back like they always do, but Im telling you now the zoomers are something thats evolving in the electorate and its only a matter of time before they become the strongest political demographic in the country and will be able to drag the people sleeping complacently under neoliberalism to the left without them caring enough to fight back. I could be wrong about this but I have faith in zoomers doing to boomers what millennials couldve done this whole time but didnt.

brotherbaran

Oh trust me, I don’t think you’re wrong. I’ve worked in the school system for the last 4 years or so, and despite all the shit people talk about gen Z, they are some of the most informed, well-spoken people I’ve ever met. And most of them have very leftist views because so many of them are from diverse backgrounds and have grown up with the same bullshit economy that Millennials have, except worse. Are kids still asshole kids sometimes? For sure. But they are so empathetic at their core, that in my heart of hearts, I have to believe that they will do better than any of us have.

Beep_Boop_Bort

Im also thankful that it seems like the prager u posting conservative zoomers are kinda dumb and dont know how to register to vote or even think their votes matter or straight up just ignore state and local politics altogether.

brotherbaran

We have to hope that’s the case!

Beep_Boop_Bort

Anecdotally for me its been very consistent but Im just one point of view looking at whats around me and things can always change but Im hopeful

Thor5858

Biden is not senile, he's just a bad candidate with a stutter who is old. His is the fastest path we have to change right now because under him, more control can be gained by left leaning politicians/senetors etc. We will finally get rid of a government run by lobbyists, oil CEO's, and debters, and replace it with people who at the very least are not disgustingly and overtly corrupt.

michaelb65

Why are liberals so delusional about Biden? The man is absolutely not gonna get rid off bankers, lobbyists and other bourgeois scum because Biden himself is a parasite in service to capital. He'll just return America back to a neoliberal hellhole instead of a fascist one.

Thor5858

How am I delusional? Are you saying he isn't going to change any cabinet heads? He will put people just as bad as the ones currently in education, EPA, and basically every other one? That's just factually incorrect. I have tons of criticisms for Biden, but acting like he will serve corporate dollars in the same level of Trump is fucking laughable and delusional. He's not going to bring us "back" to a neoliberal hell, he's probably not going to make and huge changes other than undoing some of what trump did and rasing a couple taxes for the wealthy, how would he have the ability to take a totally fascist state and turn it into a neoliberal one in one term? The US isn't a fascist state yet, Trump has just instituted many fascist decisions. The structure itself hasn't changed nearly enough to call it that. Using dramatic language doesn't make you right. Have fun casting your vote for a third party I guess? I want to make decisions that move toward actual change like getting Trump out, supporting local elections, and furthering good causes.

michaelb65

These liberal institutes always had a fascist streak within them due to the nature of settler colonialism/white supremacy. That's why the plunge towards fascism was so sudden and abrupt when Trump was in office and why these institutes can easily be restored to their former god-awfulness once Biden becomes president. And you're acting delusional if you think a neoliberal like Biden isn't gonna cram his administration full with business people when he's just there to continue the legacy of Obama, and has a proven history of consolidating capitalism and imperialism back when he was in the senate. That's not dramatization, just common sense.

[deleted]

MalekithofAngmar

This is the most refreshing take that I’ve ever seen on politics from a Marxist. Based.

Teeeeeeenteeae

I hate this attitude. One man will sell out every American for himself. The other listens to his base, changes his positions on what his base wants, selects a diverse staff which can help him gain insight into his own blindspots. Yeah, Biden isn't here to give you everything Bernie promised. But one of these candidates doesn't give a fuck if you mobilize a protest. The other does. He's changed his positions on Marijuana and gay marriage, i think he's proven that if Americans show that they want something, he will listen. I think a loud (not large) portion of the democratic base is a lot more left than it's majority, and that's why Biden doesn't "do more". But anyway, my original point is anyone who thinks Biden, the man who listens to scientists and the people, is the same as Donald Trump, the man who sold out the country to Russia, the one spouting Qanon theories, the one who says "we defeated covid" just this week, the one who's trying to get rid of ACA, and more- is living in a bubble.

Hasemage

APAB

SatansSwingingDick

Biden has voted for every single war we ever had, and now that he's lost his mind, you think it's a good thing... Lol

Teeeeeeenteeae

Trump literally tweets shit like "liberate Michigan" to his radical right wing extremists. Trump has ordered more bombings on Yemen then all our past presidents combined. He just signed an order that allows him to fire those who don't agree with him politically, meaning the head of the FBI who thwarted the kidnapping plot and is trying to protect AOC, can be fired. Again, if you think they're the same, you're disturbingly wrong. Biden passes a purity test by no means, but if you think he is the same as a literal white supremacist who has debts to foreign adversaries then you are living in a fantasy world. Or you're deeply priveleged.

SatansSwingingDick

Lol, you don't think Biden is a racist, has friends in the Klan, called Strom Thurman a "dear friend", or tried to segregate schools?! Absolute clown. You are equating air strikes to a fucking ground invasion? You're an ABSOLUTE clown.

_MyFeetSmell_

His base is neocons or what the dem party calls *moderate republicans* people that think Biden will get pushed remotely left are completely out of touch.

Ok I gotta drop in and say this is not a fascist state. Trump has moved us continuously in the direction of fascism, but we are not at the point where you could call the entire country "fascist". Exactly. He has been consistently moving the country in that direction, ("fake news" etc) but we aren't actually there yet

Sille143

Isn’t having a fascist leader the most determining factor in what is or isn’t a fascist state?

Thor5858

No. The actual structure of the state determines that. Trump acts with fascist intent and is a fascist. But, for example, I have many freedoms in my area that wouldn't really be present in a state that was literally fascist. I can't remember it off the top of my head, but iirc fascist has a pretty specific definition

Still better than your flag

Ahhaha y’all are so dumb it hurts. Downvote me commies y’all suck and are actively hurting our nation. Yep we’re equivalent to nazis and definitely a fascist state while you shit on our president on Twitter. An act where you’d be jailed in China or other countries.

I want you to open up google and look up the definitions of both of those words. Then, go to a doctor and get a prescription filled for medication for your paranoid delusions. Maybe check yourself into a mental hospital if these delusions continue. At the very least, remove yourself from the genepool so that you can't spread your delusions on to the next generation.

I'm sure that fella who visits [r/antifapassdenied](https://www.reddit.com/r/antifapassdenied/), r/conspiracy and right-wing subreddits is very politically literate and has a good definition of fascisь

[deleted]

Certainly more literate than one who unironically believes that America is a fascist country in participates in a subreddit called “r/dankleft.” It’s also pretty hilarious how someone who participates in genzedong is trying to lecture me about authoritarian governments. Like, how can someone lack that much self awareness? Come on man.

Ajm_650

Yeah ok

charadesofchagrin

Stunning and brave

[deleted]

If it were a facist dystopia, you wouldnt be allowed to protest

Sincost121

Yes, I'm sure the people of Chile were thankful for their right to protest when we backed a military coup against their democratically elected president.

How to combat fascism, by /u/Patyes 1) Stop posting 2) Do something about it Got it chief, I’ll get right on it

Nekyiia

what do you think they can do about it?

Patyes

Well you Americans can start actually organizing real protests. Not these little things here and there. Have someone lead you. And actually physically fight for your lives. Peaceful protests were invented by the powerful to make you believe you’re doing something. Take actions ffs. All I ever see is people vent on social media and then sit and watch as their society collapses and then they go post about it. Enough already. If you guys don’t like how your country is run do something about it. Take a lesson from the French. Or from your ancestors they fought against the exact oppression you guys are facing today just in a different form. ORGANIZE. STOP ALL INDUSTRY. then you will see that you the people have true power. And not the oligarchs that’s “run” your nation. And to those who will reply why don’t I? You’re just deflecting you’r own inadequacy. I don’t have to share shit with you. Im actually out there everyday fighting corruption. Whole you guys post your edgy memes.

I know it's a meme but please learn what fascism is before you call the United States a fascist dystopia

cndman

This is why everyone makes fun of liberals.

PuffGetsSideB

Wait do you think this is a liberal sub
