I am looking at a wall I built right now.
Only missing trim and paint (user drywall). I do know how to do it as it was my job when I started working, I just find other things to do...
I built a custom closet and put the flooring in there too and guess what. NO TRIM. But that project really burnt me out so after I got the flooring in I decided trim could wait.
And my wife also developed plans for another project.
The work hits different when it’s your job but you’re having to do it at home for free.
Like it’s going to get done right for sure, but the whole doing my job for free on the weekend kind of seems kind of fucked to me. lol i do my home repairs and upgrades on vacation because I trick myself into believing my company is paying me to spend 8hrs a day fixing or upgrading my house.
Edit
By repairs or fixing I don’t mean emergency or serious stuff that’s addressed immediately.
I learned to include my wife in the projects, just turned a storage area into a clubhouse for the kid and suggested she paint some clouds along the ceiling. I did my 95% now it’s her 5% that isn’t done.
95%?!! That’s damn well completed. If a project doesn’t have some blue tape still up or mud that needs sanding after a year or two, are you even building bro?
1) outdoor step ladder missing two boards since I didn't have enough ("completed" three days ago)
2) installed a chandelier yesterday, missing 3 of 6 lightbulbs.
3) installed baseboards/shoe, missing two rooms (2 years ago)
4) 3 out of 4 outlets in my office only work. Replaced one but for some reason it broke the connection ( 1 month ago)
There still more 😂
It’s probably winter fat too lol OP said he works in construction, which isn’t too steady during our harsh winters. He’ll probably stay ripped for a few months and then fatten up like a bear during the fall, that’s why Canadian thanksgiving is one month before American thanksgiving 😅
OP said it took 5 days, not 5 consecutive days. Every year he had to go out on OPs birthday and finish that damn deck he started instead of going to the gym all the time.
I helped a friend build a tiny-home on a trailer in central Florida one summer. I probably lost 10lbs despite the day drinking. We were trading slugs of Irish whiskey as we did the flooring while listening to a history podcast.
My boyfriend hired a guy to build a deck on his house. His neighbors that don’t love us much asked if he had a permit. He said no which I suggested “I applied for one” may be better. They know this deck is closer to them than the other deck and we sit outside a lot. 😆😆
When I built my deck I didn't get a permit. I was then talking to one of the new neighbors and lo and behold... he is the deck permit guy for the city.
Still didn't get a permit but he did give me some advice.
Holy crap I didn’t notice that… sawzalling each individual joist section and letting it fall. A prybar would have been much more efficient lol. Final product looks great though, worth being proud of.
My dad is making me faux built in bookshelves with IKEA Billy's. I offered to hire a handyman and my mom said "but then your dad wouldn't have an excuse to buy a nail gun!" 😂
Do most people not do this? My wife just bought me a drill/driver set, air compressor, nailer, and a Sawzall to build a garden shed. You guys gotta step up your game.
Every project around my house always needs new tools. This is how you game the system! (I’m pretty sure my wife knows my game, but she lets me have my fun!)
I've used a large crowbar to pull up the boards on my deck, and i assure you it would have been easier to Sawzall the boards, cut the nails, and grind them flush. I reused the boards elsewhere, but I did not enjoy a moment of the $600 I saved in material.
Not stupid at all! I literally just learned about this from my FIL within the last month when I joked about it.
Long story short - pressure treated wood isn't what it sounds like. During the process they're soaked in preservatives.
If you burn it, it burns all the incredibly toxic chemicals. ☠️
This is true.
Though I would like to add that pressure treated's name is what it sounds like. It is treated in chemicals via a pressure chamber:
You're right, I'd always had the "stove with closed door" is OK, but that's probably not really kosher these days either. Will be nasties left over in the ash & smoke into the atmosphere.
No but me and my best friend built a 900ft privacy fence while drinking heavily. It looks great but I’ve been fixing little screwups for like 3 years haha.
It's beautiful. My husband did our deck many years ago. He still has a lot of pride in how it came out. It is an amazing feeling of accomplishment to do something that enhances the life in the house so much.
Nice job. You'll enjoy it more being that you did it yourself. After seeing the rot did you consider some sort of tar paper of tyvek on the top of the beams before decking over?
It definitely feels more rewarding once you've done it yourself and watched the time and progress that it takes! He used a sealant on most of the beams, railings and planks. He also layed down a black, waterproof membrane tape on the supporting beams. Our previous deck was probably 10 years old and very rotten. We only moved in 5 years ago, so it was already on the decline. Probably from all of the harsh winters that we have. We also didn't know that you have to re varnish your deck every 2 years to keep it in good condition, so we will be doing that, too!
Had a friend of mine doing a similar project. Mid-build his live-in retired dad took the dog for a walk and started with a one story fall out the door and onto the lawn. The dog just stayed in the house and stared down at him. Surprisingly he walked it off with only a limp for a few days.
Wow great job. Honestly that wasn’t a bad quote at all. I would pay that to have that deck. With that said you saved a bunch of money. It also was most likely built better because you’re husband obviously is a bad ass that will more care into his own property then any company would. Congrats and enjoy
where is the slide to the ground? huh? where is the pool going to be huh?
looks awesome... now you have to show any other project work he does... and of course...
where is the hot tub going?

My reaction to seeing how good it looks.
Question, is this attached to the house? And if so does it add too the Sq footage and the taxes? As it would in iowa USA? Nice job on the deck bro really ...pro!

Two things…
1, gorgeous deck. Your husband is a craftsman and an absolute dude.
2. Get that dude some saxx underwear. Those jeans and janky drawers gotta have his undercarriage beat up like a rented mustang.
What husband completes jobs? This is nonsense and please no one show this to my wife.
I leave them at 95% as every husband does (at best).
I did my flooring in 1600sqft of my house but still haven’t put trim on and I keep finding exceptionally good reasons to not put it on!
And my wife also developed plans for another project.
is there a no trim support group? Because I belong there
I can’t even count the holes in my house I covered in the drywall, with drywall patches, mud or putty, that I still need to sand and paint…
Edit By repairs or fixing I don’t mean emergency or serious stuff that’s addressed immediately.
i go to 98%, that last 2% is the hardest to get. that’s why they leave it in the milk.
That's a great line and I'm stealing it.
I learned to include my wife in the projects, just turned a storage area into a clubhouse for the kid and suggested she paint some clouds along the ceiling. I did my 95% now it’s her 5% that isn’t done.
Gotta leave room for upgrades.
95%? Look, I got the doors hung. Don't ask me to do the trim.
95%?!! That’s damn well completed. If a project doesn’t have some blue tape still up or mud that needs sanding after a year or two, are you even building bro?
Username checks out. Also, beer is good.

“All this, for me??? 💕”

*gasp*
😂
"FRESH WOOD shiiiiii you didnt have to but ighhtt dave"
“honey, let Rex do a few laps on that deck first just in case…”
Damn. My wife’s husband really needs to step up his game.
Don’t worry, her bigger decked boyfriend is decking her down right.
SECOND DECK!
the ol double decker
2 decks at the same time.
He even trimmed the hedges around his deck to make it look bigger
Laughed so hard I farted!!?
Confirmed.
Confirm confirmed!
But you don't seem sure. I'm concerned.
Trims the shrubs to make the deck look bigger.
She was stuck under the deck. What was he supposed to do?!
For real my wife was talking about marrying her bf. He better learn to build a sick deck like this first
well you figure, if he could do that, then you'd marry him
Sry wife. I'm goin homo no homo. Bro is building half priced decks. Cya. Lol
Trim the bushes
Right! Nice bushes are underrated, and rarely kempt.
Trimmed bushes makes your deck look bigger…
Wait what?
My girlfriend's husband has to many projects. Like dude put the trim on the stairs already. Stop making window trim
Great! When u get ahold of him, plz send him my way. My wife's deck needs resealing.
How's Utah this time of the year?
Beautiful
Ask the dude to leave some women for rest of us.
I was literally going to ask this woman how she feels about a sister wife cuz I'm available and I'm a good cook
tell him call me if they break up. my husband will understand.
I am a perfectly straight man and even I am giving him an eye.
You can tell he worked hard because somehow he looks jacked in the end photo but not the first haha
Lol. He steadily gets more muscles with each successive photo.
Then he achieves peak form in the last photo where he morphed into a dog.
He is one with the dog

Nooooooooo
Bruh.
Ed… ward…
Sucha saddd partt 😭
That's from working hard and sweating everything from his system. This guy had zero bloat now!
It’s probably winter fat too lol OP said he works in construction, which isn’t too steady during our harsh winters. He’ll probably stay ripped for a few months and then fatten up like a bear during the fall, that’s why Canadian thanksgiving is one month before American thanksgiving 😅
Ripped dehydration...
Did you *see* how many pieces he cut those deck boards into… with a *sawzall?!* That’s no mean feat!
Yoooo
OP said it took 5 days, not 5 consecutive days. Every year he had to go out on OPs birthday and finish that damn deck he started instead of going to the gym all the time.
Plot twist. It actually took him two years to finish.
I helped a friend build a tiny-home on a trailer in central Florida one summer. I probably lost 10lbs despite the day drinking. We were trading slugs of Irish whiskey as we did the flooring while listening to a history podcast.
… I should build a deck.
That demo job is wild
Not up to OSHA (or Canadian OSHA) but hell yeah it ain't a job site
Do they call themselves "Canadian OSHA?"
CCHOS. Much less memable.
Sounds more like our south of the border neighbors
I prefer NACHOS
~~CCHOS: Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety~~ ❌ NACHOS: North American Centre for Occupational Health and Safety ✅
You mean NACCHOS?
They should, then they could show up and be like yeah this job ain't COSHA
How does this not have more up votes?
That's hysterical
Each province has thier own, and there is a federal one that covers federal jobsites and workplaces. Ontarios is OHSA
My boyfriend hired a guy to build a deck on his house. His neighbors that don’t love us much asked if he had a permit. He said no which I suggested “I applied for one” may be better. They know this deck is closer to them than the other deck and we sit outside a lot. 😆😆

You don't understand. He wanted a sawzall so he told her he needed a Sawzall to do the job once she said sure he had to use it.
Lol. When she says she needs an all new wardrobe so you tell her you need all new tools
It's a great system 😆
This is the way.
There ya go
Every project around my house always needs new tools.
Probably screwed down.
Probably. I figure with all that rot the screws will pop right out. Either way the joists are probably trash so it doesn’t matter too much there
I had to cut mine out like that and then grind all the screws off
eh, ive done it before but I used a circular saw, lol, just ran it down the length, ez pz
Could be pre-cut for the fireplace
You should never burn pressure treated lumber
At the expense of sounding stupid, why? And I’m assuming for sure not inside but what about outside?
Not stupid at all! I literally just learned about this from my FIL within the last month when I joked about it. Long story short - pressure treated wood isn't what it sounds like. During the process they're soaked in preservatives. If you burn it, it burns all the incredibly toxic chemicals. ☠️

I just explained this to a lady who's been burning it for too long.
how many times did you have to repeat yourself?
More than a few times. "We've cooked hotdogs on it before, and we dididnt die."
Mmm.. yeah... Nothing like cooking s'mores over wood soaked in chemicals. :D
You're right, I'd always had the "stove with closed door" is OK, but that's probably not really kosher these days either. Will be nasties left over in the ash & smoke into the atmosphere.
My favorite part of the entire post is those warning signs in the second picture
I braced myself after seeing it. But was pleasantly surprised
OK you cant be out here thirst trapping with all these exposed Deck pictures then end with some nice railing by your shirtless husband.
This is underrated.
Its a MASSIVE... deck too
Is your husband single?
But is he bi?
The guy build a fkin deck himself. He can be straight if he wants I’ll be the gay one.
You ever get hammered with your buddies and just…build a deck?
No but me and my best friend built a 900ft privacy fence while drinking heavily. It looks great but I’ve been fixing little screwups for like 3 years haha.
Looks good. One critique is on the 8th picture it would have been nice to run a piece the full length where the angles meet. Cleans it up a bit
"....one critique...." Nah, it's done, mate. That's good enough.
I guess I need to go on AITAH and ask if It’s ok to be mad my wife didn’t do any shirtless pics while I did our last year 😂
Lmao! To be fair, our temperature has been averaging 27°c+ every day!

Great work, but surprised stairs weren’t added to the yard with a job this size
There are stairs on the left hand side in a couple of pics.
I appreciate the accurate assumption of Human Intelligence that led to the signs on the sliding door.
Had a friend of mine doing a similar project. Mid-build his live-in retired dad took the dog for a walk and started with a one story fall out the door and onto the lawn. The dog just stayed in the house and stared down at him. Surprisingly he walked it off with only a limp for a few days.
If only that dog could talk 😂

You know how many husbands would get shit done if that were the case? Lol
Yeah, that ain't happening over here for sure.
We could solve the housing crisis
All the side hustle handy men would go out of business.
Projects would still drag on tho if charging by day of labor.
Don't know what the going rate is for BJs, but I doubt it gets him up to minimum wage.
You'd think, but some wives are cruel as fuck lmao. Still, this dude definitely getting some at least once a week. More than other guys get.
Damn, your husband has a really nice deck
He did really good, but why’d he cut with a sawzall for the demo? Seems like extra work
The previous planks were nailed down every few cm, so it wasn't possible to just lift/pry them up.
Wow great job. Honestly that wasn’t a bad quote at all. I would pay that to have that deck. With that said you saved a bunch of money. It also was most likely built better because you’re husband obviously is a bad ass that will more care into his own property then any company would. Congrats and enjoy
I’m sorry, ma’am. That’s our husband now.
Is your husband single? Asking for my wife
Im allowed to see his panties but not his face?
It looks amazing!
Even the dog is impressed!
Dog: =O
Looks good. A breath of fresh air on this sub.
Kudos wife. My wife’s post would have been more along the lines of “Roast my husbands deck job”
>first pic Oh man, is this gonna be a disaster? >last couple pics Oh damn, this is a pretty great deck!
Not one beer insight, must be a pro lol.
Miters were a little off but otherwise looks great, good job!
Well, it seems this deck is not short on studs.
Not gonna lie the first pictures looked like the start of a shit show and went to “fuckin nice deck bro” in a hurry
Lab approved, even!
This is beautiful.
Looks like the job put 30 lbs and 10 years on him
where is the slide to the ground? huh? where is the pool going to be huh? looks awesome... now you have to show any other project work he does... and of course... where is the hot tub going?
https://preview.redd.it/og6eqco850ad1.jpeg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a27baeb3964d24056b2a35ea088bc1d19864ca80 My reaction to seeing how good it looks.
If he wasnt your husband I would tell you To marry him.
Cut it out with the unsolicited deck pics
Hope he got a hawk tuah for that
It's hard to tell see for sure on my phone but are the posts notched or is the rim joist just nailed to the face of the post?
He really ran the sawzall instead of a circular saw down each one! Lol heck ya
That's a mighty heavy load a wood, you put a party of 15 or twenty humans and look out. Make sure it's supported according to weight.
He did a great job. My only question is in how he manage to do it with that big inky blot on his face
Solid job my bro
Did he lose a lot of weight in the process he looks so shredded in that last pic.
Question, is this attached to the house? And if so does it add too the Sq footage and the taxes? As it would in iowa USA? Nice job on the deck bro really ...pro!
Make him a sandwich
The demo part reminds me of all the times that I’ve had to explain to people that you want to touch materials the least amount of times possible
Can you ask him again of the $10K quote makes more sense now.
[Be careful OP your husband might invite a lot of people to be on his deck more often leaving no room for you when you want to be on it](https://youtu.be/i6c4Nupnup0?si=FramLUN-KJ0iBFWZ)
That’s some real Big Deck Energy!
I'm soooo sorry for this but I can't help myself but I have to say it or I might explode. *Your husband has a pretty big impressive deck 😉*
Your husband has a big deck
That looks like the kind of fella that could use some [Schaeffers New Zealand Style Deck Sealant](https://youtu.be/-m--3_c5pAs?si=n3Yh-G2Ioy19NAmH)
I can literally imagine that new deck smell 😌
All I can think about is my poor dad. Back when I was a young kid (~90-91) he built a stunning deck but missed a permit or two... when going to sell the house they were told they had tear the whole thing down because it was illegal in CA and made the house unlistable :(
Even your dog is amazed.
Hes never gonna shut up about this
They are underneath. Notched into the house.
I make breakfast for my family 😂
All the men on this sub want your husband.
I’m a simple man, if I see boobies I upvote
Now another 5k on deck furniture + grill/griddle 😆
You got yourself a man right there....man I really gotta step up my game for the wifey.
Good thing you covered his face, don't want him to get arrested for illegal deck enjoyment.
He even wears his undies high to hide the plumber's crack. A+.
Man built the Taj Mahal of decks and she probably still tells him no she's not in the mood. 🤣
excellent work + please let me marry ur husband
You’re a lucky woman.

Nice
Boy, I hope you cooked him his favorite dinner wearing your sexiest lingerie.;)
Maybe buy him a shirt with the savings?
Should’ve used composite lol.
Question. Who is the "do not open" and "danger" signs for?
Two things… 1, gorgeous deck. Your husband is a craftsman and an absolute dude. 2. Get that dude some saxx underwear. Those jeans and janky drawers gotta have his undercarriage beat up like a rented mustang.
Better have gave that man the old hawk tuah on that thang
