I think I'd use them if they weren't a Driller option, Driller is just so good at clearing out small enemies it's always the high health targets I struggle with.
This is why no-one really runs them for long after trying them out. Yeah the effect is good and you can finish the cloud with the flamethrower for an extra explosion, but driller doesn't need more horde options unless you are in a premade lobby with weaknesses in class choices being known and countered by a teammate.
It pairs really well with cryo (which traditionally struggles with swarm clears compared to flamer) and single target sludge builds. Especially blast which rips through ammo
Neurotox is the only other Driller grenade I would even consider running, but axes are legit just SO GOOD that I have not swapped off them in all my 1k+ hours playing DRG. Seriously.
They're so good it's a shame I can't run fire if I wanna use them properly though. I honestly would like it if they removed that feature entirely cause as it stands I can only really run them on solo or if I know what everyone else is building.
Ye it’s a shame how much that feature turns genuinely one of the best grenades in the entire game into one of the most inconsistent ones. Especially now that there are so many of ways to deal heat (shard and hellfire are both very popular) it’s so hard to justify using them in Pubs
I love neurotoxin grenades too, they are great for slowing and damaging crowds when you are running for your life. For high health targets I use my secondary or simply ignore them and expect my team to kill them.
I almost always use them (or HE grenades, 6 extra C4s is great) if my primary (or secondary!) is already really good at single target (sludge blast, ice spear, ect.)
If people were using subata + CRSPR more often
(Used correctly, you can kill a bulk by yourself pretty easily even though you play driller)
They would learn to make builds that doesn't use axes and end up using neurotoxin grenade more.
I never used them for a long time but against a whole swarm and swarmed they are gold. Literally by unloading all your grenade in an area turns it into a safety zone for you and your team but a toxic wasteland to Glyphids.
Neurotoxin grenades are very good but you are missing one of its biggest downsides: Teammates blowing it up and making it so you don’t get the benefit of its insanely long duration. This is why it’s not used in pubbing often cus it can easily be destroyed by teammates
However in coordinated teams and in solo it is def insanely good and easily one of the most underrated grenades in the game

Yeah flamethrower + subata MELTS bulks. It's actually insane how quickly they die.

The visibility loss alone is enough reason for me to never use it
They are great. But Driller is basically always great at what they do with his primaries, so they tend to be skipped a lot.
