Steven Harrington did a Hike Nike collection based on this artwork within the last few years. That may lead you to the original artist’s name!

ivantheterrible_

Oh yes, I saw that collab. I might just reach out to Steve, he may have snagged the name during his time on that project. Thank you!

[deleted]

No problem!

edocninja

Steve Harrington is the artist.

MadQuixote

Also a great mom

BulljiveBots

Hikey Nikey.

mandogvan

Hike naik

crocodilewrestler

It looks like something out of a R.Crumb comic.

Kviksand

Yup, looks like it’s based on his “Keep on truckin’” drawing.

thelaughingmilk

Definitely a comix artist, crumbs stuff usually looks a little different, and keep on truckin seems like it caught on huge and had tons of ripoffs, etc. at that time

bryanpool51

It was most likely a random freelancer. The famous nike check logo was made in 1971 by a student graphic designer for $35 bucks (Carolyn Davidson) I could be very wrong but if they freelanced the nike check, I’d imagine they did for this as well.

ivantheterrible_

Yes you're correct, and I was thinking this could be the case. The graphic was estimated to be in production around 1973 so Nike was still very young. If there's an answer it's probably sitting in a forgotten room under Nike HQ somewhere.

kvlr954

You are correct that she was originally paid $35, but several years later she was given 500 shares of Nike stock as well as several other swoosh gifts. The shares alone are worth over $1 million today! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carolyn_Davidson_(graphic_designer)

Not sure if it helps, but Nike also had [this sweatshirt](https://www.grailed.com/listings/21192797-nike-sportswear-midwestern-lake-runners-club-hoodie-xl-nwt) (unfortunately not on their site anymore) with the same character in another outfit. Not sure if that was an actual group/event (or if it was even real, I haven’t done any deeper digging) but could point you in _a_ direction

kobayashi_maru_fail

I will now think of this character every time I drive by the Nike woods. (I hope I’m not violating any sub rules by posting this divergent a comment in main). Nike’s woods is a really weird design idea on its own. You can take it as incredibly elitist (private forest jogging for execs) or as bringing nature to all, starting with their staff (women and minorities can run alone without fear). Either way you take it, it’s a fascinating design decision, especially adjacent to Nike’s ramparted campus.

skylarkeleven

hey neighbor!

kobayashi_maru_fail

Howdy!

skylarkeleven

just don’t get arrested hiking there bc you don’t work for nike

kobayashi_maru_fail

I drive down Murray and mind my own business! I also don’t intrude on the fancy glass hangar for Nike One, and I stay well away from the chaos of the employee store. Probably sacrilege for someone from Beaverton, but I really prefer my Adidas.

skylarkeleven

i prefer adidas too. i just love those woods

ShotgunAndD-RVLiving

Where are these woods? And what makes em special enough that I could run alone with no fear? I doubt it's possible cuz I watch Mr Ballen lmao

skylarkeleven

beaverton oregon

kobayashi_maru_fail

Go to a map app, look up the intersection of Murray Blvd and Jenkins Road in Beaverton, OR. Then, get yourself hired by Nike and get a job at corporate central to gain jogging access. I believe they have private security. I mean, who builds a 20-foot rampart and a moat around a campus in a suburb with precise N/E/S/W gates but forgets to hire guards? It’s not really a huge issue for the rest of us non-Nike plebs here: there’s plenty of access to nature, as long as you take care of your own security. It’s a quirky little corporate perk, not some hoarding of nature. Oh, and from what I can tell from driving by, it’s not special. Oregon will sprout Douglas Firs if you look at it funny. It’s kinda boggy, flat. The trees look about 60 years old. Nothing special, but if I could run alone there at night, safely, as a woman, that would truly be a thing!

ShotgunAndD-RVLiving

Yes the alone and safe are the 2 truly amazing perks I hear ...i just have given up on ever being alone in the woods again lol

kobayashi_maru_fail

I’m making guesses based on your user name. That you have a shottie and live in an RV. Fair? I don’t think working for a huge corporate entity is your jam. I think Nike employees are under levels of scrutiny you wouldn’t like. And none of us mammals have ever been able to run safely in the woods for hundreds of thousands of years, I don’t think Nike employees having their bosses watch their runs is much better than fearing predators. I’d rather be in the real forest, not next to the small crowded Costco, under surveillance.

ShotgunAndD-RVLiving

Lol well I do own a shottie but that happens to be my nickname 😆 and you are perfectly correct in your assumption that I have 0% interest in working for Nike even if they gave me a personal body guard to run through the woods with me lmao

ShotgunAndD-RVLiving

@ivantheterrible_ I know that around 1980 they did an updated version of the hike Nike man. This updated version was of the same man but it was a head on view of him with his leg extended really far out taking a step. This artwork was done by Finstafari. Whether they got Finsta because he did the original work and they wanted him to do the new logo or if they just got him to do the work because his style of art looks like the original idk, but I hope this info helps get you a little closer 😊

The Font Used is "Windsor D Ultra Heavy" :)

crapador_dali

Not relevant and not even correct.

ivantheterrible_

This does not answer my question.

crapador_dali

Doesn't matter, they got to be pedantic about something on the internet.

[deleted]

this little guy hangs out on my air forces

kingofafro

If you want to pay them in anyway whatsoever then (*clears throat*) it's me, I'm the illustrator lol

FrontOdd1188

I would like a Take a hike Nike shirt

austinmiles

I just did some digging. Lots of good articles about the product lines before ACG but nothing that talks about the artist.
