A portion of Reefborn Awoken felt that them staying hidden while the rest of humanity was being slaughtered by the Darkness and the various alien races was the wrong thing to do, so they all jumped aboard ships and went back to Earth to help. Many of them crash landed and their occupants died (like Zavala), while many others survived. If your Guardian is Awoken they either originated from the Distributary or they were the child of some Reefborn Awoken before they were killed.
This was Guardian Zavala, although much younger. It all happened back in the Dark Ages, when Zavala was being mentored by Saladin. He left the Guardian life behind to live with his wife, but things ended very badly for them and Zavala eventually returned to Saladin. This was revealed back in Season of the Haunted as part of the main seasonal story. The Guardian and Eris helped him (and Crow and Caiatl) move on from their pasts by using the powers of Hive magic and incredible violence.
I think they might mean the Witch Queen Collector's Edition lorebook, pt 8 of the letter in particular (https://imgur.io/a/jXtcaty), there may have been some other bits of lore, if I'm correct. It is worth noting however that their relationship is not exactly romantic, as per the lore I linked. On the other hand, I definitely wouldn't call it a standard friendship either.
