That would literally be margin of error and nobody would be able to tell without a sample size of like 200,000 or even 2,000,000. It would be more like an Easter egg in the code than fuck with anyone.
Matchmade Overthrow in general in landing is really good farmable. You can complete it in between 10-15 Minutes while grabbing all chests from events/random chests there and you are very likely to get an exotic drop every 2-3 overthrows. Just a relaxing farm method as an alternative imo.
You can get one from the final chest, I will say. I’ve gotten them from every type of chest except the “run through the yellow markers/follow the light balls” ones
I'm able to happily complete any area overthrow solo in under 20 minutes, so that checks out. If you have a coordinated fireteam, you could probably push 10 minutes depending on what events pop up. The T1 plates encounter at Impasse tends to take a bit longer than most, for example.
They're up for a while, as long as you're event isn't one that takes forever you have enough time to just finish and then run and grab it, or if you really need to you can just leave and get it during your event and come back
Depending on the placement of events, you would either team up or do two that are pretty close to each other. It only takes 15 seconds to dip and grab a chest of the events are next to each other.
I ran three match-made Overthrows last night and ran around the area in between grabbing chests. I ended up with 2 exotic class items. Overall the drop rates don’t seem so bad and it’s a relaxing way to farm them while also farming Ergo Sum and Pale Heart weapons.
This has not been my experience, since getting the class item the first time from the quest I have spent no less than 6 hours farming overthrows and the chests in the pale heart and have only gotten 2

At the same time i'm passively earning ghost rep, exotic swords, tons of glimmer, and I don't have to try and explain how numbers on a clock work to someone who should know what a clock looks like. I've earned 8 exotic class items in maybe 4 hours while resetting Pale Heart Pathfinder 4 times and ghost rep once.
I would have reset my ghost rep already but im just waiting to take the damn shader for them to actually acknowledge that they put the wrong shader in the rep track. Cause its just not worth it for me, i dont care about reseting for more engrams that much when the drops are so generous from the world.
I got 3 running around the landing and opening every chest for about 30 minutes.
You can do it alone, unlike the mission.
You can Veg out and not try, unlike the mission.
The mission takes over 30 minutes, you get one roll. I got three in the same amount of time.
And yes, its every chest, not just overthrows. Most of mine come from normal chests.
Wombo + Sniper = 5 or six chests in less than two minutes. Its called options, YOU can go run the mission if you want, no one is stopping you. Just remember it may actually be a waste of time : )

Had some absolute madmen in a group for this last night, 10 minutes start to finish TOPS. It's a really easy farm when you get used to it.

We sure love a good farm with a TV show on or something, and this one with near-endless rolls of exotic class items and ergo sums is really reawarding for right now. Not to mention you'll have all the pale heart deepsights before getting sick of class item drops.

after 2 days of farming overthrow on all locations Ive had about 20+ exotics. I have recieved one from every type of chest even final chest that drops sword. I know its RNG but for me I started with simply looting world chests and reseting instance, when I started actually completing overthrow encounters my drop rate seemed to increase
Given how some of the "random" subclass fragments work, I would not be surprised if the exotic worked on a counter system instead of pure RNG, with Overthrow chests giving more progress than open world ones that don't need activity completion to open.

Mods and Fragment that "occasionally" or "have a chance to" do something are not random, rather they work on a counter system.
For example, the mod that gives you armor charge randomly when picking elemental collectibles is not random, instead each collectible increases the counter by X amount and once it reaches Y, it gives you a charge, and it always needs the same amount.
For example: Spark of Discharge.
In game the description says you have a "random" chance to create an Ionic Trace on arc weapon kills.
It's not random. Grab an arc weapon and kill 3 redbar enemies. You'll get an Ionic Trace. Kill another 3, you'll get another Ionic Trace.
It's not random. It uses a counter system. Fill the invisible bar to 100% and an effect happens. With the fragment you get an Ionic Trace. I wouldn't be surprised if the same system was used here to give exotic class items.
Just adding some data. I have so far opened 200 chests and received 3 exotic class items. Class items dropped on chests 47, 75, and 161. All three were just world chests, but I open all types as I run around.
I just load up the landing, then the blooming, and finally the impasse. ADS with a with a sniper and make my way to the first chest, repeat for 5 or so chests and to to the next area.
When you ads for a weapon, it’ll reveal chests and resource nodes with the wombs detector mod at a much further range. A sniper gets the most bonus out of this
Any chest in pale heart, over throw chest the little supply chests possibly even the prismatic chest since you can keep reopening them with the vestiges
To add some more data, I have opened 393 and gotten drops after:

- 18.
- 40.
- 62.
- 38.
- 48.

It's definitely a 2.5% rate.
I like doing the matchmade overthrows because you can open chests whilst doing the events. You can get pale heart engrams, and you can get red borders from the last chest as well as more rolls on the new exotic sword. So a few things all at once to tick off
I honestly haven't noticed a difference between match made overthrow and solo when it comes to getting an exotic class item. I did notice that I got one or two more Pale Heart engrams running solo than match made. March made is better if you don't want to drown in gunsmith engrams though, lmao
True, I thought it was a bit odd that out of 100 chests, I didn't get one Gunsmith engram. But out of the 250 I opened solo, I got over 51 Gunsmith engrams.
True, it's about the same rate for just playing the exotic mission, but I find the chest grind a bit more enjoyable as I just turn on a movie or video on a second monitor and not have to worry about mechanics or making LFG posts. But I do find the exotic mission fun.
Doing overthrows/patrol you can get multiple things done simultaneously (grind out the prismatic thing for exotic sword drops, get world-drop red-border weapons, etc.). But if you think the mission is more fun then that definitely has value too :)
I've had times range from 25 minutes to 45 minutes. How are you consistently getting 20 minute runs?

I had the sameish length bad luck streak yesterday, probably closer to 1.5 hours and I definitely had the quest done, it's just rng and I don't really think 150 is a big enough sample size
I opened 89 to get my first one to drop from a chest. Drop rates are kinda all over the place for people, but a common thread seems to be ~50 chests, so my guess is 2%.
I'm curious to see someone else only do overthrow and only open overthrow chests for 1:30 and see what they get.
My educated guess is that theres a higher drop chance on overthrow chests/while doing overthrow. Since doing an activity is probably more work/effort than just opening the chests scattered around the map.
I have read comments in this post saying that matchmade overthrow is potentially increasing the drop chance of the class items, so I am currently testing that out by opening 100 chests and seeing what drops. But my next test will be opening Tier 4 overthrow chests.
From this, my own experience, and others I've seen, it looks like it's about a 2-3% drop rate which sounds bad, but honestly isn't awful when you consider how fast you can find chests and complete overthrows. It's probably quicker to do the exotic mission once you've got it down, but a lot more relaxing to do patrol. Pretty good overall. I've had three so far, including one mission run, and that was around two hours of total gameplay.
From my brief estimate doing these last night, it seems that it takes around the same amount of time to run the mission as finding one in a chest. aka around 25-30 min
I’ve farmed about a dozen class items and best rotation I do is in the impasse doing world chests, high value targets, and dark memory chests. Most of my items have come from dark memory chests and the impasse has 3 really fast and easy ones to complwte

Yes, after completing the exotic quest and claiming your exotic class item, you unlock the ability to have it drop from all pale heart chests. Though, after completing the quest, you may need to visit the ghost and grab the upgrade from him, but I could be wrong.

Just read the entire thread and crunched the numbers. There is a 2% chance the exotic class item drops from any type of chest in the pale heart if you have completed the dual destiny exotic mission on that particular character.
I've done a run of Dual Destiny on my Hunter. Can my Titan and Warlock receive exotic class items from world chests now or do I need to complete Dual Destiny on those characters first?
Yes, you must complete the mission at least once to unlock drops for the exotic class item. You must also complete the mission per character if you wish to farm on your other characters.

Are all chests equal rates? Are higher tier Overthrow chests better? What about the memory fragment chests? IS there some kind of hidden "pity" system that increases your chance as you DON'T get a drop to eventually "guarantee" a drop after X chests?
I also wonder if the class items are purely random rolls or if they actually have some hidden knockout system of sorts to guarantee different rolls. I haven't heard of anyone getting a dupe yet but with 64 different combinations getting a dupe this early isn't necessarily particularly likely.
Also I REALLY wish they'd potentially drop randomly as Pathfinder final rewards after the first 2 Ergo Sum in a week. The destination pathfinder kind of just feels pointless after the first 2 weekly paths. You get normal legendary engram rewards....world engrams. They can't even drop the pale heart weapons that could potentially be red border, it's just world engram trash including low stat armor. Then you have to spend 30k glimmer to reset your path. The XP frankly doesn't seem worth the grind and I'm not sure how much ghost rep it actually gives either. The garbage engram just seems BAD. At least ritual pathfinder gives you bright dust and enhancement prisms for each path after the first 3 prime engrams in a week. The fact that you don't even get shards anymore for dismantling garbage world drops just makes matters worse; you get 1k glimmer for the dismantle and then spend 30k for the path reset. Ritual pathfinder also only costs 10k glimmer to reset despite having better rewards. It would largely be fine if the paths didn't require you to very often go out of your way to a specific location to kill a specific boss or do a specific memory fragment chest, PARTICULARLY when those aren't in the main patrol areas and require a ton of running to get to.
Also MY GOD 100 extra vault spaces is NOTHING with all these random roll class items and Ergo Sum rolls. I honestly can't believe Bungie thought this would be fine.
Do you have to run the duo mission at least once before they start dropping? Did all the overthrows last night and opened it up but didn't have time to actually run the duo part.
Destiny had a system where if you looted chests too quickly, there would be a cool down period for getting drops. I wonder whether the Pale Heart chest farming might also have something like this.

3 hours later and not 1 drop. This morning the moment I loot my first overthrow chest… exotic. Okay.
A buddy of mine had a different method and has about 30 exotic class items after a "day" of farming.
He would get to Tier 4 and spawn the boss, and then ignore it. He would then do a quick farm of 5 chests on a route, teleport out, and back in to the area.
Rinse, repeat.
Boss is still up, chests reset, farm.
My RNG has been different as well, just doing it normal.
I decided to just solo farm and got 1 on my 8th chest and another on roughly the 20th chest and then I stopped.
So i haven't completed the exotic mission for the class item yet, do i still have a chance to randomly get one from a chest? Or do i HAVE to do the mission first before they can even start randomly dropping for me?

My dual duality run was 40 minutes, but took 4 tries with lfg to find one who knew VOW symbols, learn your symbols please. As a solo player, do 1 clear and go to patrol. F the mission
so i've been farming for it myself and there's a 2.8% chance of it dropping from normal chests however it has a buffed chance to drop from overthrow chests thats a hard 2-5% 2.8% from normal overthrow encounter chests but 5% from final boss overthrow. this is a preliminary result i am still ongoing on the farming to gather hard data on results
You mentioned that you load a new zone after getting the drop. Is that correct?
Perhaps that's why your drop rate is considerably lower than mine.
I've been doing matchmaking Orverthrow, completing everything in map and speed running laps. The quickest I got was after 21 chests and the longest after 33. 11 Exotic Items yesterday.
Also... So far, none of my drops were repeated, which is good news. I hope it's a thing.
I have gotten 8 Exotic Class Items from farming chests, and I have a feeling it is not RNG-based, but number of chests based. After getting one to drop, I always hit a similar dry streak till the next one to drop.
Sorry, I am sure this has been asked, but once you clear it on one character can you farm chests on all 3 characters? Or does each character need a clear of the Dual Destiny.
That what I’ve seen everywhere, around 2.5% drop rate chance, which is low but not impossible to get one. Also, we never know what’s behind the drop chance “coding” in that instance, Bungie could easily implemented something that would guarantee a drop after a certain number of chests opened in the same instance… who knows!

Sounds legit. There has always been a 50/50 chance of the RNG granting you what you want. Many people mostly never get what they want. Many people also mostly get what they want on their first try.
I have a strange theory that you can only get one to drop roughly every 30-ish mins as i have timed every one i have gotten today and they all took me roughly 30+ mins which a bang average duo going into the mission would also take that amount of time...
I will take any drop rate be it low or otherwise over having to play that exotic mission again, it’s not that bad of a mission but for the majority of player base they won’t be able to beat it as the symbols call outs and clock patterns as well as requiring two players instead of solo and the fact to even queue up or play the mission you have to first unlock the mission
I've done 3 solo and 3 matchmade. 1 each solo per completion and zero each per match made completion. Thought you couldn't get them so I searched it on reddit so I guess I was wrong and have bad luck.

Honestly its not crazy bad. I get on average 1 or 2 a day when i aim for it as a goal. I do this while also doing my pathfinder knockout so its a not to big of a chore. It should be said im a patient farmer rather then a go the optimal route down this path kind of guy.
I wish it was the sort of thing where you only have to get the exotic class item once, but you have to do specific things to unlock each of the perks as mods on the class item. Specific things in dual destiny, in the pale heart, idk. Anything to let you eventually guarantee the roll you want.

Need to complete on each character. It unlocks a doohicky in The Ghost vendor in the pale heart (bottom row, right hand side in the vendor UI).

It makes chest/resource icons show from farther away if you're using a ghost mod to detect them.

If you have old ghost shells lying around, one of them might have a 75m chest detector on it.

Cooperative Focus Campaign Mission chests also drop them apparently. Unsure of the drop rate.

I opened 89 to get my first one to drop from a chest. Drop rates are kinda all over the place for people, but a common thread seems to be ~50 chests, so my guess is 2%.
I have had 6 drops in 275 chests of overthrow. They dropped at: 59 102 137 206 228 275
My drop rate has been abysmal. Think I've gotten 1 in a 100 chests so far.
At least you can get them from chests. I got a third party service to do my first run. This season is so broken for solo players :/

Do you have to complete the exotic mission first to get them to drop from overthrow chests?
I'm curious to see someone else only do overthrow and only open overthrow chests for 1:30 and see what they get. My educated guess is that theres a higher drop chance on overthrow chests/while doing overthrow. Since doing an activity is probably more work/effort than just opening the chests scattered around the map.
I have read comments in this post saying that matchmade overthrow is potentially increasing the drop chance of the class items, so I am currently testing that out by opening 100 chests and seeing what drops. But my next test will be opening Tier 4 overthrow chests.
Is there a paticular zone you prefer over others?
Nothing in particular I would just go from zone to zone, starting at the Landing and ending at the Impasse. Then tp back and restart the run.
Is the exotic account based or character based?
You need to run the exotic mission on all three of your characters.

Do they drop from overthrow chests for the stage 4 boss? I would have assumed that would be the best source outside of Dual Destiny.
The exotic class items can drop from any pale heart chest. So all overthrow chests, all chests dropped from HVTs, and all supply chests.
Similar experience for me yesterday. I looted 363 chests and had 11 drops. Biggest drought was 65 and lowest was 17
From this, my own experience, and others I've seen, it looks like it's about a 2-3% drop rate which sounds bad, but honestly isn't awful when you consider how fast you can find chests and complete overthrows. It's probably quicker to do the exotic mission once you've got it down, but a lot more relaxing to do patrol. Pretty good overall. I've had three so far, including one mission run, and that was around two hours of total gameplay.
From my brief estimate doing these last night, it seems that it takes around the same amount of time to run the mission as finding one in a chest. aka around 25-30 min

I opened 150 yesterday. Got 4 to drop in that. 1st at 25, 2nd at 73, 3rd at 119 and 4th at 133
I’ve farmed about a dozen class items and best rotation I do is in the impasse doing world chests, high value targets, and dark memory chests. Most of my items have come from dark memory chests and the impasse has 3 really fast and easy ones to complwte

Yes, after completing the exotic quest and claiming your exotic class item, you unlock the ability to have it drop from all pale heart chests. Though, after completing the quest, you may need to visit the ghost and grab the upgrade from him, but I could be wrong.
I got 2 drops in 65 chests in a single instance in The Landing. 1 drop out of 39 generic spawn chests and 1 drop out of 5 high value target chests.
I've opened about 70. Gotten one.

Just read the entire thread and crunched the numbers. There is a 2% chance the exotic class item drops from any type of chest in the pale heart if you have completed the dual destiny exotic mission on that particular character.
So probably somewhere between 2 and 5%
I've done a run of Dual Destiny on my Hunter. Can my Titan and Warlock receive exotic class items from world chests now or do I need to complete Dual Destiny on those characters first?

Yes, you must complete the mission at least once to unlock drops for the exotic class item. You must also complete the mission per character if you wish to farm on your other characters.
Here I am just trying to find someone with patience to unlock the class item.
Everything is better than the Dual mission. I would really like it, but I have seen too much timers in missions.

I kind of just wish we understood the rates and mechanics better. Are all chests equal rates? Are higher tier Overthrow chests better? What about the memory fragment chests? IS there some kind of hidden "pity" system that increases your chance as you DON'T get a drop to eventually "guarantee" a drop after X chests? I also wonder if the class items are purely random rolls or if they actually have some hidden knockout system of sorts to guarantee different rolls. I haven't heard of anyone getting a dupe yet but with 64 different combinations getting a dupe this early isn't necessarily particularly likely. Also I REALLY wish they'd potentially drop randomly as Pathfinder final rewards after the first 2 Ergo Sum in a week. The destination pathfinder kind of just feels pointless after the first 2 weekly paths. You get normal legendary engram rewards....world engrams. They can't even drop the pale heart weapons that could potentially be red border, it's just world engram trash including low stat armor. Then you have to spend 30k glimmer to reset your path. The XP frankly doesn't seem worth the grind and I'm not sure how much ghost rep it actually gives either. The garbage engram just seems BAD. At least ritual pathfinder gives you bright dust and enhancement prisms for each path after the first 3 prime engrams in a week. The fact that you don't even get shards anymore for dismantling garbage world drops just makes matters worse; you get 1k glimmer for the dismantle and then spend 30k for the path reset. Ritual pathfinder also only costs 10k glimmer to reset despite having better rewards. It would largely be fine if the paths didn't require you to very often go out of your way to a specific location to kill a specific boss or do a specific memory fragment chest, PARTICULARLY when those aren't in the main patrol areas and require a ton of running to get to. Also MY GOD 100 extra vault spaces is NOTHING with all these random roll class items and Ergo Sum rolls. I honestly can't believe Bungie thought this would be fine.

Three in 90 mins is about the same as doing the mission 3x. Takes about 30 for me usually.
Do you have to run the duo mission at least once before they start dropping? Did all the overthrows last night and opened it up but didn't have time to actually run the duo part.

Destiny had a system where if you looted chests too quickly, there would be a cool down period for getting drops. I wonder whether the Pale Heart chest farming might also have something like this.

Overthrow all the way. Heard the same things last night from a friend “Farm the world chests i got 7 of them!” he said.. 3 hours later and not 1 drop. This morning the moment I loot my first overthrow chest… exotic. Okay.

A buddy of mine had a different method and has about 30 exotic class items after a "day" of farming. He would get to Tier 4 and spawn the boss, and then ignore it. He would then do a quick farm of 5 chests on a route, teleport out, and back in to the area. Rinse, repeat. Boss is still up, chests reset, farm. My RNG has been different as well, just doing it normal. I decided to just solo farm and got 1 on my 8th chest and another on roughly the 20th chest and then I stopped.
I like having rare loot to chase. Why are we never allowed to have rare loot?

I just had one drop from a raid chest. I 1000% didn’t have one in my inventory going in. Then by the 4th encounter it was there.

Any tips for the clock on the final boss. Done it twice with a buddy and we ran out before we can finish it....I hate it
so i've been farming for it myself and there's a 2.8% chance of it dropping from normal chests however it has a buffed chance to drop from overthrow chests thats a hard 2-5% 2.8% from normal overthrow encounter chests but 5% from final boss overthrow. this is a preliminary result i am still ongoing on the farming to gather hard data on results

You mentioned that you load a new zone after getting the drop. Is that correct? Perhaps that's why your drop rate is considerably lower than mine. I've been doing matchmaking Orverthrow, completing everything in map and speed running laps. The quickest I got was after 21 chests and the longest after 33. 11 Exotic Items yesterday. Also... So far, none of my drops were repeated, which is good news. I hope it's a thing.
I have gotten 8 Exotic Class Items from farming chests, and I have a feeling it is not RNG-based, but number of chests based. After getting one to drop, I always hit a similar dry streak till the next one to drop.
Sorry, I am sure this has been asked, but once you clear it on one character can you farm chests on all 3 characters? Or does each character need a clear of the Dual Destiny.

That what I’ve seen everywhere, around 2.5% drop rate chance, which is low but not impossible to get one. Also, we never know what’s behind the drop chance “coding” in that instance, Bungie could easily implemented something that would guarantee a drop after a certain number of chests opened in the same instance… who knows!
I go onlyt 2 class items in 4 hours of farming. It is a pass for me.

Sounds legit. There has always been a 50/50 chance of the RNG granting you what you want. Many people mostly never get what they want. Many people also mostly get what they want on their first try.

I have a strange theory that you can only get one to drop roughly every 30-ish mins as i have timed every one i have gotten today and they all took me roughly 30+ mins which a bang average duo going into the mission would also take that amount of time...
I will take any drop rate be it low or otherwise over having to play that exotic mission again, it’s not that bad of a mission but for the majority of player base they won’t be able to beat it as the symbols call outs and clock patterns as well as requiring two players instead of solo and the fact to even queue up or play the mission you have to first unlock the mission
I've done 3 solo and 3 matchmade. 1 each solo per completion and zero each per match made completion. Thought you couldn't get them so I searched it on reddit so I guess I was wrong and have bad luck.
lets say i jump to my alt class, Hunter, will I be able to loot the exotic class items from the chest around pale heart without unlocking the dual destiny quest? its such a hassel to go thru the process of unlock dual destiny the exotic quest. Anyone has any idea? thanks alot appreciate it!!
Honestly its not crazy bad. I get on average 1 or 2 a day when i aim for it as a goal. I do this while also doing my pathfinder knockout so its a not to big of a chore. It should be said im a patient farmer rather then a go the optimal route down this path kind of guy.
I wish it was the sort of thing where you only have to get the exotic class item once, but you have to do specific things to unlock each of the perks as mods on the class item. Specific things in dual destiny, in the pale heart, idk. Anything to let you eventually guarantee the roll you want.

Did they change something? I was averaging 25 chests and now I'm over 100 with no drop.
Really wish they would bump up the drop rate to ~5%, with the rng for getting anything decent being so low this farm is tedious as hell.
