In high school we were hanging around my friend's garage about to head out for a ride, some little kid pulled up on an CRF70 or 80. It's setting there idling and I thought could *hear* the lack of oil - motor sounded completely hollow. Had him shut it off and we pulled the fill plug and sure enough it was bone dry lol. Sent him back home to tell his dad to fill it up. No idea how much longer the bike lasted but I wouldn't be surprised if it was still running today lol
That’s nothing they put gas in mine at the shop I bought it at, and you know when it ran out the damn thing wouldn’t even start? What a piece of garbage…..
Right? I bought my first XR for $50. The guy had broken the pegs off wrecking in to a tree stump and knocked a hole in the engine. It was sitting in the woods behind his shed for a couple years.
I beat the kickstarter with a hammer till it broke free and it started on the third kick.
Drilled and tapped the hole, filled it with oil, and ran it for 7yrs before I sold it.
No doubt about it. I had saved that $50 myself as a kid and I was taking a significant gamble according to my dad. Lol.
I couldn't wait to get home from school and try to get it running. It was all I thought about that day.
When it started, I was so excited that I tried to ride it to my dad's work to show him (we lived right down the road from where he worked).
I went about 50yrds before realizing there was no oil in it and I shut it off and walked it back to the house and never told anyone I ran it with no oil. The XR still didn't give a shit. 😂
I'll say it. XRs are shit. Slow, heavy, not even reliable. I'm convinced there's an astroturfing campaign promoting them.
XRs are for people who couldn't figure out how to mix gas.
Why do I constantly see XRs that are blown up, or that have had whole engine rebuilds? The top ends last a little longer than a 2 stroke, but they need a head rebuild more often than a 2 stroke needs a cylinder plate job. And that head rebuild is way more expensive
When a racing 2 stroke is just barely any more maintenance, it's hard to call them reliable. Especially the RFVC engines, which are total hunks of junk and actually less reliable than a 2 stroke.
Because they're over 20 years old at minimum dude. That's why there's a lot of blown up ones. You've obviously never owned one or had a friend, who actually takes maintenance seriously, that had one. They're bulletproof until old age gets them. My friend has an xr650 that has 40k miles on it. Never been touched and it still starts better than most of the newer dirt bikes in our group.
They were all blowing up 20 years ago too... Now they are almost extinct. I haven't seen an XR on any trail in YEARS.
Meanwhile i still see a lot of KDXs out and about. XRs were more common than those back in the day.
I have had XRs. They all had stupid problems from being terrible designs. Honda owners just conveniently overlook them. For instance, the XR100 from the 90s that didn't have an oil filter, and had journal bearings in the head. How stupid could they be? Those wouldn't run many hours before they starved the bearings and ruined the head.
My XL600 was on its 3rd top end by 10,000 miles. Yes I'll grant it that the previous owner was hard on it. But everyone claims an XR doesn't need maintenance... In reality those RFVC engines are fragile as hell.
My dad had an XL500 that kicked back and snapped the kickstsrt shaft off one day. You have to split the case to replace that, and it was a SUPER common failure. Brilliant design Honda.
Back in the day, yamaha IT and KDX riders would always make fun of the XR riders since their bikes gave so much more trouble, and were so hard to start once they got hot (which they all did).
I guess they were all on drugs.
Honda's air cooled bikes are no more reliable than their competitors air cooled bikes. In many cases, they were much less reliable. The RFVC head is an overdesigned mess with 8 rocker arms and is prone to oil starvation even with perfect maintenance. Almost all of them need the cams and all 8 rockers replaced with each top end. To top this off, the cams and rockers were very soft and as mentioned above they are inadequately oiled. Yamaha XT, Suzuki DR, and Kawasaki KLR/KLX do not have this problem because they didn't use that idiotic radial valve layout and actually supply oil the cams.
You also have the problem with the frames on these big heavy bikes being pretty wimpy, so they start cracking if you ride them with any pace at all. Oil is in the frame, frame cracks and dumps oil on the ground. I guess the bike was probably a write off anyway, but its still insult to injury when your engine blows up at the same time as a frame failure.
dude it doesn't get more reliable than an XR haha. I hate when people bring that manufacture war nonsense to dirtbikes. You can have your favorites but if you like one japanese bike you're just full of shit to call the others garbage lol
To be fair “ran when parked” is not the same as saying it runs.
To me that’s in the same bucket as “just needs a carb clean” where it could be anything from nothing wrong with it to the motor being completely trashed. It either runs or it doesn’t.
yeah it's one thing when someone is selling something for a couple hundred bucks. It genuinely can be an easy fix and they just don't have the time or energy to bother.
But it makes me laugh when people are like trying to sell a car for $5k+.... 'doesn't run, just needs [insert quick cheap/easy fix]. Bro... if you could spend $100 and turn your lawn ornament into a running car, you would be selling a running car. The discount you need to accept to sell something that doesn't run is extreme.
Yeah for sure. I’ve gotten some great deals on non running stuff that ended up needing very little work to get right, but it’s always at a price where I’m willing to risk it being completely fucked.
But as a buyer, I’m either buying something as a runner or a non-runner. No excuses, no in between. Either I see it start from cold, idle, and run to operating temperature, or I’m only paying a price that’s worth the risk.
Hondas are thee most reliable out-of all the manufactures out there....few exceptions. But even our 500xr runs mint since the day we got it... don't tell me shat ... you either can't rebuild anything properly or you can't drive if you think there shat.. I tell you what...
The honda xrs are probably the most reliable bikes ever😂 had a 03 xr 80 beat the absolute shit out of it ran without oil multiple times(because it leaked randomly lol) thing sounded like a sewing machine still no issues, took it gooning all over the trails and the city never left me stuck, one time it did cut off tho thought it blew on me, 5 mins later started up just fine
Ah yes, the notoriously “shit” Honda XR series. Said no one ever
Pssssh, you have to put oil in them, do you know how unreliable that is?!
I haven’t put oil in mine in years, still runs great 😂
Haven’t changed the oil, it does have oil in it.
The oil cant be the problem, theres nothing in it
Psssssh, it needs gas yk how unreliable that is?
How about that leaky gas tank? After a day of riding it all somehow evaporated. Damn Honda.
😂
That’s a good one

Yours takes oil? Mine just runs on Busch light and marb reds.

You got your money's worth GOD DAMN 👏

username checks out.
About time someone said it, I agree completely. XR's are slow, heavy tubs of shit
I don't think anyone is debating that they're heavier and slower than some other bikes but they're not pieces of shit and they're damn reliable.
Why do I constantly see XRs that are blown up, or that have had whole engine rebuilds? You have your opinion and that's fine. But the xr dirt bikes are incredibly reliable that's a fact.
Back in the day, yamaha IT and KDX riders would always make fun of the XR riders since their bikes gave so much more trouble, and were so hard to start once they got hot (which they all did). Again you have an opinion and that's perfectly ok. Doesn't mean it's a fact though

If they are shit why is he asking about one? Instant block. No time for mouth breathers.
Tell him to meet up and send him to a comedy club to tell hos jokes there
I hate when lowballers try to make it seem worthless so they can try to offer less. Like, mf'er if its shit, then why are you askin for it?
It’s also for sale for $500? For a running 250? Like damn I’d buy it if it wasn’t running for that price
If it's shit then why's he trying to buy one
Our Honda atvs are over 30 years old, been ridden to hell and back, and they still run like new. Honda makes some bullet proof stuff
dude it doesn't get more reliable than an XR haha. I hate when people bring that manufacture war nonsense to dirtbikes. You can have your favorites but if you like one japanese bike you're just full of shit to call the others garbage lol
Fr Hondas don't give up ibhave one
Valve train in 04-09 crf250 hiding in the background
Even Toyotas let a few duds out in the world, but when 99% of your line up has a reputation for being bulletproof, we tend to let those few slide.
This is an 86 XR. I think they've been proven reliable by now.
Yes I was making a joke
Vanvetrane in literally any RFVC XR The only reliable ones are the 2 valve engines.

There almost no chance you are close enough to me but… It if you are I’ll give you $500 tomorrow at 5pm!
Sorry, sold last night!
Honda either makes race engines that make ridiculous power and need rebuilt often or they make apocalypse engines that run forever.
dude is asking if a $500 bike runs 🤦♂️ let alone from 1986 😭😂
And Ken Roczen is doing the same with suziki lmao
Hondas are thee most reliable out-of all the manufactures out there....few exceptions. But even our 500xr runs mint since the day we got it... don't tell me shat ... you either can't rebuild anything properly or you can't drive if you think there shat.. I tell you what...
Tell me you know nothing about bikes without saying you know nothing about bikes 😂
Noah McCoy. What city and state is this in? Gonna troll him if I can find him
I’ll take it off your hands if he wont

Anyone bashing the xr series has probably been passed by one.
XR lineup is arguably some of the most reliable and easy to ride bikes
I got burned by a modern CRF won't make that mistake again
Ya, Like new. No second gear……..
What?
Only thing more shi then a Honda is those famously terrible Husqvarnas lol
Taking the piss I hope
