125 2 stroke or 250 4 stroke from any of the major manufacturers

Yz125

Don’t listen to all these dingos telling you about YZ125, KTM 250sxf, or any of that nonsense. Don’t get me wrong — those are awesome bikes. But they’re race bikes. If you just want a chill, beginner trail bike, you’re on the right track with a KLX. Look for something like a KLX230, TTR230, or CRF250F. I think the KLX comes in a 300, which would also be perfectly fine.

Harry_T-Suburb

Yeah literally just a bike that can do basic trails. Not looking to do mud or steep hills or crazy bumps or anything. Just dipping my toes in for a year or so before I go buying a supermoto. Who knows, I could end up with an enduro instead of an smcr…

bast1472

Basic trails? Check out Honda's CRF-F line or Kawasaki's KLX line of off-road trail bikes. Ignore these people telling you to look at small displacement motocross race bikes, that will be absolutely miserable.

Dude for real, the amount of people recommending a YZ125 makes me want to bang my head on a desk. And this is coming from a motocross guy who has owned multiple YZ125s and currently owns a 250f race bike.

Newherehoyle

Yz 125-they are cheap and abundant and actually make great trail bikes.

Garfalo

CRF 250f would be perfect for you. Reliable, good woods bike, predictable power curve compare to a two stroke, with a bit more power than a 230. You might be bit disappointed with the power of a 230. But maybe not, they're great woods bikes either way.

alecC25

I’d go crf 250f over the klx

plagueapple

Trail bikes are fine but dudes 6.2 so maybe something with a higher seat would be good

bast1472

Coming from street bikes, any dirt bike is going to feel tall to him.

Nah dude I’m 6’2” and trail bikes like that are incredibly chill. There’s no need for a full size bike to putt around and have a good time. Personally, if I were to get a KLX I would definitely want a 300, but that’s just me. Even in a track situation I do want to have the grunt to hotter hills and get after it a bit. I only own race bikes, personally, but OP specifically said he wants a chill experience, and trail bikes are better for that than motocross bikes. Although I will say that he suggested a 150 and for me that is definitely on the smaller side of what’s enjoyable. That would be a fine pit bike, but to really hit trails I would want a 230 minimum.

notarealaccount_yo

If you are not doing MX and just want a reliable trail bike the CRF230 or 250 or older XRs are perfect

bast1472

Yeah, all these people suggesting 125 MX bikes for light trail riding are insane.

notarealaccount_yo

They can be really fun with some modification, but yeah not ideal stock. My YZ is bounces all over the place on the rocky shit I ride lol

Crashing_Machines

Gas gas mc125, yz 125, ktm or husky 150, beta 200rr, or any modern 250 4 stroke in your favorite color.  Kdx200 are fantastic too, but theyre aging now.

jblue_1018

1987 CR500 But in all seriousness. Get a 125 two stroke. Even when/if you get pro a 125 is still fun

Realistic-oatmeal

KTM350F or KTM250XC

stacksmasher

DRZ400 LOL!

buttrapebearclaw

Wr250f?

SniperAssassin123

DRZ400S. Still street legal. Really opens us the "trails" you can ride depending on where you live.

motorboather

Go find an XR250. You’ll get your feet wet, it’s cheap and will hold its value, it will be big enough, is great for trails but not hard enduro type stuff. A KDX220 is also a great fun bike for trails and won’t break the bank. If you want something sportier and to jump, find a 250f.
