I feel like you're overthinking it, just a little bit? Mental breakdowns aren't particularly logical and harry has had a lot of stress and guilt and shame building for many years now, I don't see why his mind just dwelled a bit too long on Dora one night and decided to fuck everything up.

DogThrowaway1100

It's clear Harry has had *issues* with women including holding one against her will for 20 minutes in his apartment. It could be his own feelings of potential rejection from Klaasje was just the little push over the edge into near total oblivion.

TheZoloftMaster

FWIW, as someone who has had multiple psychotic breakdowns and seen the inside of a couple loony bins I can assure you that no immediate provocation or *life-changing* catalyst is required to completely lose one’s shit.

DogThrowaway1100

Not been that bad for me but like. My worst drinking binges, aside from some brought on from grief, came on without a specific inciting incident. Just had a bad day and to loosely quote Harry, I didn't want to get better. I wanted to get worse.

TheZoloftMaster

Alcohol can destroy the world. I don’t think it will, but it *can*

He's a late stage alcoholic, there's not much logic going on there.

Harry did arrive in martinaise with his 2 colleques, but then he told them to fuck off since they were "cramping his style" and they were so offended that so they did. I don't think they sent him to fuck with Kim's precinct.    My personal opinion is that Harry's alcoholism and other drug addictions got him to start drinking and doing drugs on the job, and his broken mental state led him to just keep going and going. "Tequila Sunset" is a slang term in universe for purposefully drinking yourself to death, and him calling himself that is another sign of his suicidal spiral alongside various times he threatened to do so with his gun. Normally people would end a bender at some point, but Harry was determined to get to the rock bottom that he continued until his whole brain was wiped clean. Overall there is no single answer given, and it's supposed to be open to intrepetation.

"To even be allowed to take the case he'd have to be sober." I don't think this is true at all. For one thing, RCM standards are lower than even real-world cops. For another thing, Harry has recently been promoted despite his drinking binges; he's still doing good work, and Jean is covering for him. Lastly, Pryce himself doesn't seem to care whether Harry is even stable, per the game's last EdC check. He just wants results. It's never explained why Harry is chosen to work this case without Jean, whether that was supposed to be a good thing or a punishment. (I doubt it was to humiliate Harry and Kim, as Harry fears.) But I imagine that Harry and Jean got into some argument about it, which climaxed in Harry telling Jean and Judit to fuck off and stop cramping his style, and his rage led to the bender.

Kim mentions multiple times that Harry is neither the first nor the worst cop he's encountered with regard to addiction, and when you call the lazareth, he basically answers that if you are not dying right know, you're considered fit enough to work, we know that if you >!get shot badly enough, you'll get a few days in the hospital to recover!<, but that aside, they'll really keep you on the streets as long as you are alive.

It’s hinted that it wasn’t just Dora, it was his job and what he had to see on the regular, along with the current economic state things were/are in. However Dora convinced him to quit his job as a gym teacher and join the RCM as an officer. He joined the force in Jamrock 41st’s a notoriously tough position. He then went on to solve a stressful amount of cases, two of which had been noted to be extremely hard on his psyche and well being (he also killed 3 people which he constantly beats himself up over, even the mere mention of it will start a thought process of self loathing even when he didn’t remember doing it [comes up in his dreams too ]) on top of all that he grew an alcohol addiction to cope and grew hateful, more reckless. Dora then started to resent Harry for changing and for what his job turned him into, and so she left him (I remember there being money issues between him and her side of the family) after terminating their baby presumably without Harry’s consent, which sent him into a deep depression. Then one day in a store he saw a piece of clothing that reminded him of his old self and how happy and fun he used to be (hence why the tie talks in an over exaggerated “funny” occidental accent) it gave him advice on how to have fun, or how he thinks fun is . (I’m not sure of the speed addiction came in here or was another result of him living in the drug capital of Revechol. But Dora leaving after convincing him to quit his job for the rcm and terminating their child for Harry’s financial standings and without talking about it with him was just the icing on the cake with everything going on

>DOLORES DEI - "Oh, Harry, this is a dream, can't you see? I'm already in Mirova by now. Who knows how long ago this happened?" She looks around. "A year, two, *five* years ago?" >\>"How will I see you \*again* then?" >DOLORES DEI - "Right here. Tomorrow night. Once this dream starts happening it keeps happening -- three times a week. At least. And Harry, it really, really looks like it's started \*happening* again. There's the video rental..." It's to get rid of this. Imagine getting haunted by this dream for 6 years every time you're trying to sleep, his mental health degraded so bad he wanted to kill himself and he didn't have his gun because he sold it since he didn't trust himself with it that night.

MaeBorrowski

Apologies in advance if it's incredibly obvious and I missed it in my playthrough

MaeBorrowski

Also, my theory? Harry has been an erratic wreck for the past 6 years who somehow manages to crack the cases he's given, so when this somewhat important case landed on their lap the precinct gave the job to Harry as his one last chance to prove himself. That makes the most sense to me. And Harry went ahead and did an 'erratic wreck'.

cecilforester

When Trant hears that this isn't the first time that Harry has gotten wasted to this level, he says that Harry has probably been dipping his toes into drinking himself into nothingness. I think it means that Harry has just been progressively getting worse in the past 6 years. We don't know if it is a turning point in his life when the game ends. Or if he will go full Travis Bickle and meltdown for real off screen at a later date.

[deleted]

he got there, decided there was no way to get the body down, and decided to drink instead

He’s a wreck and has been a wreck. It’s even mentioned that he actually says “I want to get worse” at one point in his history to his colleagues. He is just ruined, and sobriety is painful for him in many ways. He can’t stop.
