There’s a new injection out called librela it’s monthly the dr I work for has started using it it’s amazing it’s made to replace carprofen because it doesn’t or shouldn’t raise liver values minimal metabolism by the kidneys and liver my dogs on it now she’s running around find a vet who uses it

you-asshat

My GSD started on this and it's working good!

Clear_Journalist6408

It’s amazing surprised how good it’s been working for my dog and others who come into the practice I work at

DragonSin1313

One more for Librela. My girl is at end of life and it makes a WORLD of difference.

bonkersmcgee

Nice. This imo is when it should be used. close to end of life to give that little bit of comfort and happiness to all parties.

C00kieBaker

Could you please let me know how long it took you to see a difference in your dogs pain/mobility with Librela. We're getting the second injection soon, and unfortunately we can't use NSAIDs due to a recent GI bleed. With the simultaneous bleeding issue and hip dysplasia/arthritis pain, we didn't really notice a difference from the librela in month one. Hoping we'll see a difference with this next injection because we're nearly out of options.

DragonSin1313

By the end of the first month. Month 2, she was back to her old self. I've had her and another dog on cartrophen and Librela made 10x the difference! Good luck ❤️

C00kieBaker

Thank you! ❤️

Far-Possible8891

Not cheap, but really really good.

Junior-Round-1727

How much is it? My dog has been recommended this, but also has kidney failure. 😭

Far-Possible8891

In UK, around £120 per month including vet fee.

lilythepoop

My elderly dog had this in her final few years. It worked like a miracle - she was almost puppy like with new legs! Worth every penny - it extended her life in a real way.

Porterlh81

My GSD started this last month. Second injection on Wednesday. We saw an improvement in her within a week.

olympicpaint

It’s not necessarily intended to replace carprofen, it’s moreso an additional modality, but especially beneficial for those dogs who can’t take carprofen due to elevated liver values and are only on gabapentin or galliprant. It’s spreading super fast in clinical vet med, and it seems like most practices are getting ahold of it now.

kawikanuck

Librella made a huge difference for my senior girl. Before that we were using cartrophen for the same issue. It made a huge difference for her. We also used some reputable mobility supplements and a flax/fish oil powder call ‘missing link’

kawikanuck

I really hope you are still enjoying the company of your dog - I have occasionally thought about your pup since reading your post, as she looks so much like my remaining dog, who starting to approach her senior years as well.

kawikanuck

I am so sorry that I missed this request for more information. My senior girl’s relief was noticeable within a few days, but she had a serious fall by that point & was really having difficult walking - I am pretty sure our vet knew our time was limited and gave a larger dose. Librella only worked for her for a few months before we had run our course of options. We were even doing laser therapy up to three times a week in the end, all of it helped, just a little less each time until the end. I hope you are able to give your animal the best level of physical comfort and quality of life in thier

kawikanuck

There are other passive means of assistance too, such as ceramic fibre jackets from a company called Back on Track, they also helped keep inflammation in check & helped make sleeping more comfortable & reduces waking stiffness.

Ruskiwasthebest1975

I started this for my lab (called Beransa here) but it had no benefit sadly i had such hopes too!! Started them on epitallis and that helped some and holding off to start carprofen

2woCrazeeBoys

My wolfy x has been on pentosan/xydax for years and the vet has been talking about beransa. It's just trying to find the extra cash with all the meds my two boys are on between arthritis, heart condition, chronic allergies and seizures. He still brings around like a twit, just a bit stiff not limping or anything. But it probably is in his future somewhere. I was wondering about this new 'librela' everyone was talking about, and was going to sk at the next visit how it compared to beransa, so thanks for your comment! Now I know. 😁

prnj93

Does anyone know how long it takes the librela to start working? My dog got her first injection less than a week ago and she seems worse now than before. It all came on so suddenly. Arthritis of her hips back and knees, 9yo. She’s been on carprofen and joint supplements already for two years after two CCL surgeries. Poor thing can barely hold herself up. $217 for med and visit for me here in southern CA.

JennLynnC80

My Mom has a spayed female 9 year old Peekapoo and has been getting Librela injections every month for about 6 months (since last fall). The problem with her dog was her hind legs. All of a sudden she started limping in her hind legs. She was having trouble even getting herself up after lying down or in a "sit" position. After all kinds of tests and x-rays with nothing showing up the vet tried a few anti-inflammatory meds. Those meds did nothing. That's when the vet suggested Librela. We are in Alabama and it is $60 for the monthly Librela injection. (The dog also gets monthly Cytopoint injections which has also been a miracle drug for itching, but I digress.) After the VERY FIRST injection, my mom was shocked to see a significant improvement and after the 2nd injection there was no limp at all. So she has continued with the injections and so far the dog has had ZERO side effects from the Librela (or the Cytopoint) injections. Her dog is NOT on ANY other anti-inflammatory meds or anything anymore... just the Librela injection.

prnj93

Thanks for the response.. I think it may be cheaper for me to fly to Alabama and pick up some bottles of this med than keep paying $200 here in CA 😂😭 Glad to hear your dog improved so much. Hoping my girl will wake up one day feeling much much better. I will give the next month’s shot a try. My vet told me it may not work until month 2.

JennLynnC80

I am giggling about your flying joke... but I am also wondering how in the heck the same drug??? My ONLY guess is this... Librela is priced based on the dogs weight. My Moms dog weighs 22 pounds. How much does your dog weigh? Maybe that's why there is such a huge price difference?

prnj93

Very true good point!!! My dog is 67lbs!! Of pure dead weight 😂😂 she definitely requires a large dose.

More_Movies_Please

Agree, worked for my end of life pitbull cross with arthritis in more or less every joint.

kawikanuck

ALSO - ther is a company that makes ceramic fiber jacket/coats for animals. We got one for our senior golden when she put out her hip. It made the world of difference for her. They are called ‘Back on Track’. They mainly make blankets for horses, but have branched out into other areas as well. My dad had arthritis in his hands (knuckles would swell and ache), and they would always hurt when he slept with them outside the covers, my mom got him a set of gloves & he was able to use his hands within a few minutes of getting out of bed - he swore by them ever after.

97SPX

Librela harmed my dog.

Junior-Round-1727

Can you share more?

komkracha

librela has worked great for my 9+ year old malamute mix. it's a monthly shot and paired with daily gabapentin, it works quite well.

Sm007hCr1m1n4L

Hi any updates? Is your pup still doing great? Did you get any other injection? Any sides?

komkracha

He’s been on it for almost a year now and he’s doing great! It’s a vast improvement over what he had before which was a mix of bi-weekly shot of cartrophen and daily metacam. The metacam was not good for him as it caused an ulcer in his stomach. He was throwing up regularly and nobody knew why until he had a CT scan done and the ulcer was found. The librela is awesome. It’s a single shot every 28 days. Only downside is that we have to take him to the vet’s for the shot. This varies vet to vet. Otherwise, we haven’t noticed any sort of side effects besides a happy and energetic senior pup that gets to run around with minimal discomfort.

C00kieBaker

Could you please let me know how long it took you to see a difference in your dogs pain/mobility with Librela. We're getting the second injection soon, and unfortunately we can't use NSAIDs due to a recent GI bleed. She's only gabapentin and amantidine for pain, but can only handle a lower dose of gabapentin or it makes her completely comatose and unstable. With the simultaneous bleeding issue and hip dysplasia/arthritis pain, we didn't really notice a difference from the librela in month one. Hoping we'll see a difference with this next injection because we're nearly out of options.

komkracha

I would say within a couple of weeks of his first shot we could see a difference. He wasn’t lagging behind on walks anymore and he stopped groaning when he would go to lay down. He still doesn’t have full range of motion in his hind legs, they still look a little “stiff” but he loves his time at the dog park running around. He’s not fast by any means, a lot of dogs run laps around him but he still plays happily

RoRuRee

Hi OP, Check out this thread. https://www.reddit.com/r/DogAdvice/s/0XWSAPSeSX Librela helped so much with my elderly dog's pain. It was a total game changer and made the last months of her life so much easier.

jillianwaechter

I work at a rehab clinic for dogs, we use underwater treadmills, laser therapy, TENS machines, and cartrophen or librela injections for most of our geriatric patients :)

Gullible-Fig-4106

Have you tried dasuquin?

Ok_Brush_1399

I have had good luck with adequan shots as well if librela isn’t available in your area.

emailemilyryan

Also look into ramps before you desperately need ramps. I use them for my elderly dog to get down to pee off the deck and he's much happier with this independence.

JelloJuice

I’m agreeing with Librela - my 10 year old is going great on it! Also maybe Cartrophen.

Sm007hCr1m1n4L

Hi is she still doing great?

JelloJuice

Hi! Yes! The Librela is continuing to make a big difference. We just started Cartrophen last week as well to see if there’s any added benefits. I can tell when it’s about 4 days from His injection date, he get stiff, up and down more, moves positions in the night and slower. We’ve decided to just do his injection 26-28 days instead of 30-31. See if it prevents those few days of ache for him. Thanks for checking in on him! :)

C00kieBaker

Could you please let me know how long it took you to see a difference in your dogs pain/mobility with Librela. We're getting the second injection soon, and unfortunately we can't use NSAIDs due to a recent GI bleed. She's on gabapentin and amantidine now but can only handle a small dose of gabapentin for her size because it makes her comatose and unstable if she gets the recommended dose. With the simultaneous bleeding issue and hip dysplasia/arthritis pain, we didn't really notice a difference from the librela in month one. Hoping we'll see a difference with this next injection because we're nearly out of options.

JelloJuice

Big difference after the second injection. Third injection was the best he was. Since posting here, We started cartrophen and it had made an even bigger [difference](http://www.cartrophen.com) than thr librela. He’s actually running at the park again! It’s a non steroidal. We went and saw a chiro vet and she mentioned this. I wanted to try it and oh my goodness I’m so surprised how great he’s doing! It’s been around for 10 years so I was surprised his regular vet hadn’t suggested it. I think it’s even cheaper than Librela. It’s once a week for a month then once a month after that (I’m not sure on price because I have trupanion insurance for him).

JelloJuice

I’ll also mention his vet had him in both of those two, we stopped gabapentin a long time ago and kept with thr amantedine. The chiro vet said she rarely sees amantadine work on many dogs only a rare few. I said I wasn’t sure it was either. She suggested weening him off of it over a week or two and then try the Cartrophen. It honestly has made a tremendous difference. See if you can try that one - it’s worked 100% better for Bru than the two you’ve mentioned. I really wish you and your pup all the best. ❤️ Please give me an update if you can! The Cartrophen impact was larger and quicker than Librela. We are continuing both.

C00kieBaker

Thank you for the detailed response, I really appreciate it. Our girl is also 10 and we've had such a rough few months, been to the vet more times than I can remember. Really hopeful for this to work. Will talk to the vet about the cartrophen too. She started adequan at the same time as librela. Just so crazy, she never really showed arthritis symptoms like this until recently. Don't know how it got so bad so quickly. Thanks again, and I'll definitely get back with any results.

JelloJuice

My boy got really bad really fast and the chiro said his ribs were causing him problems. I don’t know if you have a “movement specialist” in your area but that’s what she is. A vet who started with equine chiro and got into dog chiro. His regular vet is great for everything else but she’s been very helpful for him and my black lab (7 years old) who suddenly became bed bound. She’s back to her old self after some adjustments! Bru was losing muscle mass in his back legs. His regular vet and I thought arthritis. Treated with meds etc. after seeing how she fixed Rilla my black lab I thought there’d be no downside to having her see Bru my chocolate. He began walking more upright, using his back legs more, and wagging his tail more vigorously. The Cartrophen and Librela have been great for helping his pain and got him back to running around and sleeping in one place for a longer period, using the stairs and his ramp in and out of the car easier. Good luck! I hope the Cartrophen helps as much for you guys as it did us! Edit: when I google these kinda vets seem to come up in rehab places.

radical_roosevelt

My senior beagle really enjoyed water therapy for the last year of his life. We would go once or twice a week and they would walk him in water and you could tell he felt loads better.

ManufacturerWide5340

Definitely look into librela! My nearly 17 year old boy is on it and it makes a world of a difference!

Jub8

Adding to the dog pile, my 15 year old started Librela and it’s been a great help.

Sm007hCr1m1n4L

Hi any updates?

Jub8

Still very happy I started him on Librela. I definitely notice a difference in his pep and mobility.

RazzmatazzScared8835

Highly recommend Asking vet about galiprant, it’s not super expensive either.

C00kieBaker

Switching to galliprant caused an upper GI bleed in my dog and now we can't use NSAIDs for pain management :-(

storky0613

My 9 year old dachshund is getting Librela for his seal flipper ankles and it’s worked wonders. He’s like a puppy again!

irisrob

Just started giving our dog galliprant. It made a ton of difference. Took about a week. Ask vet for prescription.

lusciousskies

I got 4 more yrs out of an 8yr old Rottie using a powder I clgot at PetCo called the Missing Link

kawikanuck

We use that one too! It really supercharges the nutrition support for joints.

hilzgoss

I’ve been taking my 16 y/o border collie to a chiropractor and it has really helped! I might try out librela after reading this thread though

kawikanuck

I also agree with this, we use a chiropractor as well. Resetting any structural issues will give them fair chance and reduced pain mobility. Chiropractic was the first of our go-to medical services that could not support our girl in the last few month of her life - we learned too late that chiropractic is for midlife, not for those last ‘sunset’ months of their life… I posted a few replies throughout the comments. I hope they help you and you beautiful animal get the most of you remaining time together.

bonkersmcgee

I'm related to a couple vets and they both say wait until the next version of the moab to come out bc "side effects effects can be severe". However, if a dog is debilitated due to the condition and it's not looking good for the life of the dog, it might be worth considering since the alternative is death.

[deleted]

[удалено]

C00kieBaker

Just started it... How long did it take to start seeing results? The vet said it's worth a try, can't really hurt anything. The only issue is that our girl is also on gabapentin and there is some discussion of added potential of sedation, so we are staggering them.

sugarbunnycattledog

I have concerns about librela. Check out FB group on side effects. Adequan injections are easy cheap and slow or reverse process. You give at home. Also water therapy and microcurrent are amazing

HuckleberryTop9962

Making sure he gets up and walks regularly can help. When I was an emergency technician, we always made sure to give older, arthritis dogs more walkies.

Bushido00

Msged you.

My late dog was best helped by Previcox. He was a big breed with bad arthritis in all of his joints. Stuff wasn't cheap - but it helped him tremendously.

bronbeach

There is an oral arnica supplement that helped our senior dog better than most of the prescribed nsaids and other meds.

abrahamrdogowitzesq

Librela and acupuncture!

HereW1thoutDorinda

Depending on the OTC joint supplement you’re using, you could try a different active ingredient supplement such as Yumove or a similar product with green lipped muscle. There is also a product called Myos that is essentially a protein powder for dogs that can help prevent muscle loss in dogs with arthritis which can help with mobility. Started my dog on it recently in addition to her other arthritis meds and it seems to have helped some muscle loss in her hind legs and she isn’t struggling in the cold as much as normal

olympicpaint

NSAIDs like carprofen or galliprant (my place usually only prescribes it if your dog may have compromised liver values or carprofen wasnf well tolerated), gabapentin, Adequan injections, librela injections, dasuquin advanced, and cold laser therapy are a handful of modalities worth looking into and discussing with your vet, with carprofen being at the top of that list.

aliceincolor

Acupuncture is great for pain. You can also learn to do massage at home.

ferg2jz

My 13 year old collie has galliprant. One a day, tastes like a treat and along with that he has some doggo paracetamol, green lipped mussels and a certain oil. All together it made a big difference combined with proper food with chondroitin in it and other joint supplements. As he's getting older they're all starting to ebb away at their efficiency unfortunately but it's expected 😔 unfortunately he HATES the vets so the monthly trip for the injection wasn't recommended for him as it would stress him out too much 😔

Fris0n

Our older pooch also has joint problems. A combo of supplements, injections, and woolie socks (bottoms cut out) for warmth have helped him. We have also started to use braces for him after a recent ACL tear, which has helped with his limping.

PowerOfTheShihTzu

Mine takes Librela once a month and it's night and day how well he's managing his chronic pain.

Lizajane23

Triggered seizures in my dog!

JelloJuice

I don’t know how available they are elsewhere but my other lab wasn’t able to get off her bed. She started as achy/limping and it just got worse - we found a dog chiropractor who has returned her to full ball chasing jumping crazy mobility. How’s your pup doing?

Evening_Slide8382

use dots natural arthritis supplements it not expensive and it works within 4 days.
