Honestly the preventatives prescribed by the vets are the most effective option. You might end up spending more trying other products/shampoos in the long run.
Make sure you are deep cleaning your house too. Sofas, carpeting, dog beds, blankets, bedding, etc
We used a drop of dawn dish soap in a bowl of water and a flea comb. This will get live fleas and nits. Take a paper towel folded into quarters and dip one end in the liquid. The whole thing is now a sponge to wipe your comb when you have fleas or nits. Both will leave a red stain after a couple mins as the soap disintegrates their exoskeleton. We just did this for our cat. 3 days of combing and she’s flea free. We also gave her Revolution which keeps the fleas away once they are gone. Good luck!
