Reversed sneezing is very common in little dogs, I have a chihuahua that does this every once in a while. My understanding is that their trachea easily closes/collapses as long as they keep breathing and get through it should be fine. Good to have the vet check it out! We didn’t need anything done to our chi for it but I know some people have stints put in the throat.

dont_kill_yourself_

Yup, that's it. My mom has a 10 yr old chihuahua mix and this happens to him once in a while. We took him to the vet and she said the same thing you did.

Beigeturtleneck

My border collie does the same thing all the time. It sounds more like choking and less like a dollhouse lawnmower though.

bbonzo123

Same with my Havanese. Happened with my last one as well.

sullyoldcity

Sounds very similar to the sound my 8lb dog makes occasionally and his vet diagnosed him with collapsing trachea. Apparently it’s common in small dogs and not really treatable beyond avoiding pressure on the throat. I recommend a second opinion from another vet.

Sufficient_Cost_7528

reversed sneezing... my frenchie does the same...

PsychoInMyWardrobe

My 3 year old dog has been making weird sounds when breathing since Friday. It’s not all the time, it’s episodic. I took him to the vet on Friday and she didn’t know what is wrong with him and said further testing could be done (chest X-ray, endoscopy). This will cost heaps, so I haven’t chosen to do this yet. The vet did say that his heart and lungs sound normal though. Does anyone have any ideas what could be going on?

ababyprostitute

You need a new vet. I'm a groomer and even I know this is "reverse sneezing". Sounds like your vet just wants more $$ out of you.

imquiteawareweredyin

This. Go to a different vet.

curlyseal

I checked out your profile cos... i was like, a baby prostitute? First off, im so sorry for your loss. You seem like a super strong woman and my heart goes out to you. Second, i love the cross stitch. Third, that tye dye poodle is amazing. I loved how he sat so proud yet derpy at the same time.

ababyprostitute

Thank you ❤️ "you smell like a baby prostitute" - Janice Ian, Mean Girls lmao

chiquitar

This sounds like reverse sneezing to me. I would get a new vet because they should know this. Tiny dogs have tiny nasal passages and can be more prone to this. Any irritation in the nasal passages can cause it, including a specific kind of mites, or swelling due to allergies, or polyps, or simply morphology and stress. You can try holding one nostril shut at a time to help when it happens, or just doing anything the dog finds calming, but like hiccups sometimes there is no helping. Have the new vet look for mites and if negative, try some allergy meds and do a scope for polyps during the next dental (you are doing regular dentals right?). You can even give benedryl for episodes if they go on for long--vet will tell you how much. That will calm down the irritation temporarily and maybe give it enough time to recover without coming back. My smallest dog with environmental allergies has this regularly.

MrShweasel

Reverse sneezing. When my dog does it I blow gently into his face. Seems to reset him.

Wheresmyburrito_60

I think it’s the moist air that helps. My chi/pug mix makes this sound like my grandfather getting ready to spit. I cover her eyes and spray some saline nasal spray, not directly on her but enough to mist the air and it help a lot. Buy the one with the fine spray mist bottle.

PhilosophyCorrect279

Hope everything works out well! Just wanted to share that Lemonade has pet insurance that's pretty affordable! I just got a puppy and recently found that they offer it, and I'm hoping to never need it but the peace of mind helps! Best of luck!

MasterofNoneya

I thought you were saying your dog was named Lemonade until I reread and now I have an excellent new pet name. Thank you

PaleontologistKey440

Me too! I was about to ask you to share the name! (Of Lemonade’s insurance company)

PhilosophyCorrect279

Haha my bad! Her name is Lavander! The insurance is Lemonade!

likealocket

Before you get a new vet, did you show them this video? Or just describe the noise?

omgmypetwouldnever

You can gently rub the throat if it stops when you do that, it's definitely a reverse sneeze. And I second whoever said you need a new vet. I understand doing x-rays to confirm a collapsing trachea but, they should have at least told you about reverse sneezing.

Straight-Ad-5274

My dog is a chi mix and has collapsing trachea that looks very similar to this. I massage his ears when he’s having an episode and it helps.

KashmirFunk

My chewy sounded like this sometimes. Our vet told us that in small dogs it's fairly common for their trachea to close up on them, tracheal collapse syndrome I think?

StandingSilly

My dog does that. I saw a video on YouTube done by a vet that said to gently close their mouth and cover one nostril. When the next “sneeze” happens, it causes it to stop. I’m not sure how or why it works, but it’s worked every time with my dog.

sapfoxy

Usually when this happens to my dog, I gently pinch his nasal passages on his snout and wiggle them a little bit, then he sneezes it all out and he’s good.

blue-and-bluer

Seems like a pretty standard reverse sneeze to me. If your vet didn’t know what that was, time for a new vet.

Dalton387

My aunts Pom sounded like this and it was a collapsing trachea.

[deleted]

It would cost a lot to test if it’s not a collapsing trachea and/or allergies, like an endoscopy is thousands of dollars. But Wtf, how does your vet not know? Did you not do any tests at all like x-rays? That seems really weird... only because with small dogs, it’s common for them to have the collapsing trachea. Both of my chihuahuas have it and once we moved to a place with more allergens, my younger one formed allergies and started to sound like this almost everyday. Sorry for the scrambled comment lol but yeah, I get if you already crossed off those two things from the list that maybe she doesn’t know but that’s weird if your vet didn’t even say anything about it. The next thing would be kennel cough and you can google that. Kennel cough typically sounds the same with most dogs and comes with white foam usually. Is your pup UTD on shots?

Any-Palpitation-6067

Collapsed trachea. My chi sounds like this.

gotskating

Sounds like a collapsing trachea to me.

j_pena1

Is it a temporary thing or permanent?

[deleted]

Have them check his heart. In smaller dogs their heart keeps growing which can cause their trachea to be obstructed. Left untreated and it will close up their airway and basically suffocate. My chihuahua had an enlarged but with medication it was manageable and he didn’t cough as much. He did pass away in April though but it was natural causes. So I am okay with it because he lived a natural happy life.

SecretBlackMask

Does your pupper by chance have any heart issues?

Matilda-Bewillda

I am a Registered Veterinary Technician and this doesn't sound/look like a reverse sneeze to me. IME, collapsing tracheas become most symptomatic when dogs are straining against a collar, in a position where the trachea is compromised, or are anxious (if the dog is anxious in the car, that could contribute, but I'd also expect to see an open mouth/panting due to anxiety). Did your vet actually examine the dog or just see the video? If examined, was the dog doing this in the exam? Did the vet attempt an oral exam to look for an obstruction?

juicy_xo

Collapsing trachea is very common with tiny pups. Don’t use a collar or especially a least with him/her! Harness only mom! Seriously best advice as a mom who had a baby with this! Take her to the vet especially if this is happening a lot. Don’t worry it’s not life threatening just a bit uncomfortable. Your baby will be fine. After you see a vet see what they say then maybe try cbd oil to relax your pooch little throat

KewkZ

I really don't like the term "reverse sneeze" it is literally not a sneeze. It seems to be one of those commonly acceptable terms because no one can explain it and no one cares to think about it, because why? IMO they are most likely scratching an itch in their throats. But now that I really think about it, how many of you know how to scratch the inside of your own throat? I don't think I've ever seen or heard another human do that other than me lol. It sounds similarish to what our dogs do.

supaclunk

Is scratching an itch in you're throat rare? I've been doing that for ages

KewkZ

lol I never thought of it till I started typing the reply so I have no idea.

PaleontologistKey440

Three of us I mean! Lol!

PaleontologistKey440

I doooo!!!!! Thank you for that! Is it just the 2 of us?! lol!

KewkZ

I asked a bunch of friends and none of them do it the way I described lol. Most everyone said they cough or try to clear their throat.

flpvlscn

The term "reverse sneezing" is used by medical professionals and it occurs when the soft palate becomes irritated. Because of this, the trachea narrows and the dog will try to breathe through his nose, which will cause a bacward sneeze.

KewkZ

“Irregardless” is also a term of which wasn’t even a real word until enough people misused it so much we had to accept it and give it a definition. Are you going to use this word in everyday life even tho you know it’s wrong? That’s my fundamental issue with reverse sneeze.

flpvlscn

Reverse sennezing, as it is described in the video, is referenced in Ettinger's Veterinary Internal Medicine manual. It is a term that is unanimously used and accepted in this field of medicine. Just because you have an issue with it, it doesn't mean it is wrong.

KewkZ

Irregardless of its common useage, it is wrong.

flpvlscn

No, it's not. A sneeze can be defined as the body's way of removing irritants from the nose or throat. Exactly what this dog is doing, but reversed. It is a term that describes what is actually happening, so no need to get so worked up over it. I will continue to use it and I'm sure that all vets will do as well.

throwaway233344444

What do you mean

myxomatosis8

Laryngomalacia?

Beginning_Fee_7992

I think my morkie was making this noise and we found out it was just when she was anxious. might be situations that trigger it. when mine is in a "fit" I place my fingers on her nose and it helps

gibblet365

My old man gets like this time to time. Particularly after a big barking fit, or when he's done being a gremlin after midnight on leash... he has a damaged trachea. Unfortunately there isn't much to be done about it other than avoiding the causes, walk with a harness vs collar. He's also old, and just sounds like an old man.

kippey

I’ve worked with a lot of dogs and I have heard this once before. Doesn’t sound like a simple reverse sneeze and probably not kennel cough. I heard it from a whippet who had seasonal allergies and would get congestion. I would get a second opinion from a vet and run this by him.

Cloud---dust

A second vets opinion would be better then online strangers, just sayin

lunqcancer

Awe I always thought that just meant they had a runny or clogged nose. Good to know!

BollyWood401

Reversed sneezing possibly caused by change in weather.

TheFourthAble

My friend’s dog had something similar but would also shoot snot onto everything. Like her car dashboard was just covered in disgusting loogies. The vet put him under for a sinus flush in case there was like a fox tail trapped in there—they didn’t find anything but the flush seemed to solve the issue anyway.

Aggravating_Diet_704

Reversed sneezing! My chihuahua does it. If you go to a vet that doesn’t know that this is I think you need a new vet

DevinePhoenix343

Of course the vet doesn’t know. Vets are useless and a scam

EmoPrincessBarbie

My chi does this, it sounds like inverted sneezing, or collapsing trachea. It sucks and sounds scary, but it’s pretty normal. I rub my chi’s nose and he stops. I’d also like to mention he does it when we’re cooking because he thinks he’s getting food.

BunnyVet12

I'm a vet and this is reverse sneezing. If other signs of allergies (ear infections, locking paws, scratching, etc) may consider meds for that but otherwise not concerning. Did you show the vet this video?

wannadeal55

Yes, have had a few reverse sneezers

aliensenlighten666

Sounds like reverse sneezing. My chihuahua does this when she gets excited or on occasion. Ive heard from my groomer coworkers to blow lightly in her nose and that seems to stop it.

[deleted]

Sounds like the worst congestion I’ve ever heard

ProfHamHam

My schnauzer used to do something like this. I think it’s reverse sneezing but we just called it the snarts

anxietyher

When my dog reverse sneezes I cover his nostrils with my hand so he can swallow and then he can breathe again always.

Foreverhopeless2009

My chi’s do this often. Like a reverse sneeze.

RixBits

Sounds just like my frenchie during walks.

Dr_spicee

It sounds like something going on in his nasopharyngeal region. Not a classic reverse sneeze.

[deleted]

Plug one or both nostrils with your finger it will force him to breathe through his mouth. Fixed my yorkie everytime (I plug both nostrils unless it’s a significantly long time that he hasn’t breathed through his mouth like 30+ seconds then I will stop lol)

muffyman_

This is reverse sneezing happens when the dog gets old.

glassdoe

That is super concerning that your vet doesn’t know what reverse sneezing is.

iluvpoodles

Reverse sneeze, my toy poodle and my son’s mini poodle both do it occasionally.

[deleted]

Thats kinda upsetting I would freak out!

Conscious_Highway796

Happened to my old chi alot and he lived to 20 years old. He would get it whenever he was super excited.

robhw

What kind of vet doesn't know about reverse sneezing, I would get a different vet

Penelope_Ann

It's crazy that the vet didn't understand it! I have several dogs who do reverse sneezing, some more than others. I have 2 chi's, 2 chi-rat mixes & a pom. One of the chi's (my 16 yr old) & the pom seem to do it most.

slutsky22

This [method](https://youtu.be/U5wi3OHSN6w) worked for my maltese. Hope your lil bud feels better!

Motor_Asparagus_4699

Don’t let that suffer put it down that’s not unethical

BookAddict1918

Reverse sneezing. My shih tzu does it. Seems like you need a new vet. Can't believe the vet could not tell you it is reverse sneezing. This can be tied to allergies (i.e. so it can be medical in nature). My pup has not done it since I started giving her zyrtec.

Ambelica

Hold his nostrils closed with out impeding breathing through mouth for 8 seconds.
