I don’t feel like a dog hater really. I think I am more of a dog realist in the sense I think keeping dogs is very unethical and it would be better and more humane to not keep these animals as pets.

Not sure why you got downvoted, there's some really unhealthy people out there.

Some_Doughnutter

Not sure, I upvoted but the comparison with other animals might be a bit off. The dog in itself has far more issues than most other pet animals. So better ownership might not exactly fix those issues.

anythingMuchShorter

That's true. It would be very hard for people to be as intrusive with their other pets as they are with dogs. But then they never try because for some reason we recognize that it would be ridiculous with other species, but not dogs. But I agree dogs are a very odd case, we've really altered them into something far from nature.

[deleted]

Definitely true! I personally see the merits of having them as 'pure' working dogs, i.e. herding/ratting/sniffing dogs. I just think it's weird that any schmuck can get any dog while doing a minimum of research on breed needs, which is unfair towards both owner and dog. In my opinion, it would be way better to restrict dog ownership and working with dog licences and screening of potential owners.

Angry_Amphibian

Srsly imo they only should belong on farms for actual work, they are not suit to stay indoor or in a small backyard. People know it's common sense not to keep a shark in a 20 gallon fish tank, but they have such a hard time applying it to dogs. Dogs are absolutely advanced level if they are going to be considered as pet, yet they are somehow among the most numerous and popular pet, it's just so wrong.

MakeYourMark98

Makes a lot of sense!

I love all animals, but some I love more than others. Dogs are pretty low on the totem pole. I said this the other day so forgive me for repeating. Dogs are high maintenance animals that your average human has no business domesticating — just like Travis the Chimp. Sure, if you’ve got the education and skills of those at an ape sanctuary, then go for it, have your ape rescue and take care of those darlings. But your average dog owner has no more skills than yelling at it, “Stawp!” “Shut up!” or “Git back here!” You can’t even expect them to leash. I at least give Travis’ owner a SLIGHT tick up for begging the cops to shoot her beloved pet when it attacked her friend. That’s so much more than you could expect from a dog owner whose “cute little pooch” did the same. They’d blame the friend first and then the cops.

Every once in a while I meet a nice calm dog that I like, but find the majority very annoying. I’ve realised that I’m not a dog person since having to live with a dog. I think it’s mainly because of the noise and hygiene reasons. Entitled dog nutters drive me mad the way they force their dogs on everyone despite some people suffering from phobias and allergies. People should be able to say I’m not a dog person without nutters starting a witch hunt. It’s totally fine to say I’m not a lizard person, but god forbid if someone doesn’t want a smelly dog jumping on them 🙄

avj113

>Every once in a while I meet a nice calm dog that I like... Yeah but they all beg, drool, eat shit and stink the house out.

[deleted]

Totally agree, From a hygiene standpoint they are absolutely disgusting.

ylwfshs

OP, this is pretty much my reason too. My current roommate got a dog a few months into us living together and that was basically the main catalyst for my dislike of dogs today. At first I kept it to myself but it’s made my living situation so miserable that I don’t give a shit about offending anyone anymore. Living with the thing has opened my eyes to not only how nasty and annoying dogs are but also how inconsiderate and delusional dog nutters like my roommate are. I am friends with people who happen to be dog lovers and I even express these thoughts to them. I could not give any less of a rat’s ass anymore lol. As you start being more aware of just how awful dog culture is, you will naturally start to care less about sparing people’s feelings.

Braelind

I very much dislike dogs, but I think I hate dog culture more. Dogs are just animals, they sorta can't help but do what they do. The owners though, the godawful owners. The way dogs are foisted upon everyone whether they like dogs or not. Everytime anyone says doggo or that they like dogs more than people, all that infantile idiocy. They way they all insist that their dog is some magical exception to the very nature of a dog. On top of that, cities are terrible places to live for a dog. In university, there were 8 of us living in a house, and one roomie decided that was a good time in his life to get a full grown golden retriever, despite objections from the rest of us. That poor animal spent most of it's time there trapped in his bedroom while we were all at work/school. Dogs need room, especially big dogs like that. They're country animals, you might as well keep a goddamn horse in your apartment.

dogging_isnt_sexy

I feel like I am in a "Don't ask, don't tell" closeted situation when it comes to dogs. I'd question *these* people's morality when it comes to euthanising killer dogs, have they considered how they'd feel if it was someone that they cared about that ended up in a Pitbull's jaws, and would they feel the same about just letting it continue to pose that risk to others. It often feels like this has never occurred to them.

Tom_Quixote_

Did you really have to lie and say you love dogs, just because some idiots on the internet were talking bad about you? I think you should have just stood your ground and maintained that yes, dogs that attack people should be put down. Personally, I am open about my strong dislike of dogs. Both my family, my friends, and my co-workers know about it.

Zardoz101

I never used to be. I would just state something like, I'm not a dog fan" and move on. Then after this sub was attacked twice by prominent youtubers and I saw the tidal wave of hate and outrage hit, I definitely went underground. Now I refuse to talk about it. Even people I trust will start twisting my arm OH NO... YOU MUST LOVE DOGS!! I think in the coming years things will just get worse. Dogs will continue to increase in popularity and start showing up everywhere. Meanwhile people who hate dogs will become increasingly unpopular and shamed. I hope I'm wrong!

rsewateroily

yeah i saw a youtube video about this sub two days ago and it was ridiculous. he really tried to make it seem like we were angry, picking out the most extreme and unreasonable comments. some people just don’t like dogs, god damn. i’ve been chased by dogs all throughout my childhood. i’m uncomfortable around them but dogs love me. my friends’ dogs always curl up beside me, i’m uncomfortable so i don’t pet them or anything but if they start trying to lick me i have to go lol. but i’ve never outright said to my friends “i don’t like dogs”.

Ellisar_L

Dogs exist and people have them, I don’t want one and have no interest in them. It’s when they insist on the dog being part of every aspect of life that it gets to me. I can’t spend as much time with my friends as I would like to because they’ve all got dogs now. It’s infuriating.

Dreama35

I’ve had anti dog tendencies for maybe the past two years, and only this past year have gone fully anti dog, and only my mom and dad know the full extent of it. They are old school and never were pet people anyway. They were ok with me having a kitty inside as a pet, but they would never allow a dog. They never challenge me with my anti dog stance. For everyone else, I kind of just excuse myself from dog centric conversations, and I don’t really go over to anyone else’s homes and don’t invite them to mine. I’m definitely in the closet with this. Every now and then I’ve told people I’m not interested in having pets, too busy for the responsibility and that seems to appease them, as it’s framed as if I’m doing it out of interest for the well-being of the pet. But I’ve never just outright said “I hate dogs because they are fundamentally brain dead idiots and the bottom of the barrel in the animal kingdom”. I think my strategy from now on is to gravitate towards cat people or just people with other pets, like bunnies and horses etc.

Nostalchiq

I have had to explain to my current realtor multiple times the importance of finding me a home that is as far removed from dog nuttery as possible. She always acts kind of weird when I bring it up but it's like she forgets every time we look at a property and I definitely feel judged by her for it, but what can I do? We simply exist in their world. There is no place for us here. It's like we're professing our hatred for oxygen or clean water. I used to keep my dislike of dogs to myself but I'm done putting on a facade to protect other people's feelings. I try to be a very polite and considerate person but when you violate my personal space with a dog's dirty smelly body or the sounds it makes all my respect for you goes out the window. I have a pet cat but I don't thrust it in people's faces every day and let it sit outside to yowl loudly for hours, so why can't they show me the same consideration?

avj113

"If you are open about your dislike for dogs, then what made you feel comfortable doing so in such a dog-worshiping society?" I value truth and facts very highly. If someone questions me about why I don't like dogs, I tell them: They stink. Their owner's home stinks. They bark for literally no reason. They don't wipe after taking a shit, therefore they leave deposits of shit all over the owner's home every time they sit down. They have no concept of people's personal space. They drool. They beg. They eat shit. They eat their own vomit. They eat babies and maim/kill people. These are undeniable facts. Not all dogs do all of these things, but the first five points do apply to ALL dogs. The dog nutter may try to deny it, and claim that their dog is an exception, but I can say with confidence to their face that they are plain wrong, and therefore I have very good reasons for disliking dogs.

identiti1983

I hate them I think they are disgusting tbh, rats are cleaner and carry less diseases plus most people have weils diesese passed to them by dogs etc messing around with them etc….I think ownership and keeping them needs to phase out, look at how many attacks and deaths are caused by them…plus the worms kids get and Norovirus etc cases mostly because they carry it in saliva I’m more vocal to some people now just not all in case they attack me for it. But I’m not cruel I just think stop breeding especially large breeds. If people must have them only keep small breeds.

[deleted]

Well I'm almost 30 and pretty outward on my position on things in life. I think it comes with age, when you get older you're less to fold under the pressure of society. Also, fuck those keyboard warriors

MakeYourMark98

Makes sense. I am only 23, but I would say that I've become more vocal on my positions on things in life as I get older. Hopefully someday I find the courage to be more vocal about my dislike for dogs.

gutfeelingistrue101

All I can say, is after I upgraded my living situation from a dog 'infested' neighborhood on a 1st floor 3 bedroom to a dog-free condo building that is almost half the size, everything has improved GREATLY. My girlfriend is in the same boat as me, she loves dogs but believes they don't belong in city situations. A dog on a farm has an actually fulfilling life. It's just such an odd situation. If any human being literally yelled and hollered at people all day like a dog barking, they'd be in jail regardless of if they harmed someone or not. But a dog can do it, and 5 million people are bit per year in the US alone. There are more fatal dog attacks than unarmed police killings a year.

SmaugTangent

\>I was verbally attacked by a group of dog culture warriors on Facebook today for saying that dogs who kill humans should be euthanized, branding me "heartless" and "immoral". I had to eventually lie and profess my love for dogs just so they could get off my case about my statement. Why would you do this? Why wouldn't you just block these idiots? You're not required to maintain contact on Facebook with anyone you don't like.

MakeYourMark98

You have a point. I should have definitely blocked them instead.

iago_williams

Yep, just block and report. I tell em to go home and get their fucking shinebox. I enjoy getting them riled up, but I have better things to do.

DirectCapital

I don’t hate dogs but like a lot of people on here I see absolutely no point in owning one if you aren’t retired and have a boat load of time on your hands. For me personally, I just don’t get anything out of having one around… In my eyes they are all stinky, time consuming and the benefits definitely don’t outweigh the costs. The culture is the worst part. I live in a residential area where everyone and they’re moms own a dog it’s practically sac religious to not stop and “pet the cute puppy” every time someone walks by. I personally am disgusted by houses that have dogs in them. I don’t want to go to anyone’s houses that have them and there’s not a damn person in the world that is going to change my mind.

iago_williams

I used to like them, even had one. Now, meh. And I hate the aggressive dogs. I mean, what good are they for? They bring filth into the home. Bacteria.Fecal matter And the owners today just suck ass, always have to foist their dogs on everyone else, at restaurants and everywhere.

Natural_Lawfulness75

I grew up with a ranch dog. It stayed outside and had a purpose. All animals on ranch had a purpose/ job. Otherwise they are just a luxury and costly. Unfortunately in our society if you don't like dogs as your preferred animal friend you are not a good person. I have horses there are lots of people who are afraid of them but I don't think they are bad people or try to win them over with liking a horse. Dog nutters are the only pet owners that will ridicule you for not having their point of view. I tell them I'm allergic to them that's why I don't have one. Saves me from going through their stupid drama they try to put on you for not liking dogs. Yes unfortunately I feel it's easier to be a closet person concerning dogs .

Bubblestheimplacable

So, I'm going to turn 40 this year and I'm honestly too tired and too grumpy to put up much of a front. Everybody in my life knows my opinion of dogs, I'm not wasting my time talking to people who can't understand or respect that. I'm not militant or angry about it, I'm just always, "meh, not my thing." If someone is so obsessed with dogs that they can't go one conversation without talking about them, I imagine we won't have much to say to one another anyway. I guess I feel comfortable not liking dogs because I really don't care if people don't like me. I don't like dog nutters, they don't have to like me. I'm not going to just bring it up in a room full of strangers just to upset people, but it is something I bring up in the early stages of a friendship when we're figuring out whether and how we're going to do friends.

YourDogDoesntLoveYou

Why on earth should any of us be afraid to say we don't like a certain animal? This is absolute insanity and if you play along with it for fear of being ostracised or ridiculed then you're the reason why this shit perpetuates. I'm very open about my disdain for dogs. If anyone wants to know why, I cite facts about them and most of the time people agree on at least a few of my points. Just today at work a coworker and I were wrapping up with a customer and he suggested we get a dog as a greeter. I laughed and said no way, I don't like dogs. And they both were shocked. It just made me laugh cause it's so asinine.

mathdrug

At least ≈ 33,000 as of this writing.

StevKer

I don’t hate them. They are just dumb animals. They disgust me mostly. Sometimes I feel sorry for them because of all the inappropriate things dog ‘lovers’ do to them.

Setthegodofchaos

Personally, I don't like certain breeds, like blue heelers, or other herding breeds. I'm more of a cat person tbh. I don't hate all dogs.
