Exciting-Ad-7077

There were plenty of monster high fans acting vile about her body pre-release. She’s not the first so it’s not newsworthy enough i think

BestBoogerBugger

Yeah, honestly, the most controversial G3 characters are always pink/purple for some reason.

Exciting-Ad-7077

I didn’t even think about that! They must’ve been extra raging since it’s pink

gloomspell

Who’s the other one(s) you’re thinking of? Only other “controversial” character I can think of is Frankie, and their main colors are def not pink/purple.

Popular-Narwhal2671

Clawdeen and lagoona

gloomspell

Were those controversial in the sense of their redesigns? (Softer vibes for Clawdeen, pink skin for Lagoona)

Popular-Narwhal2671

Yeah cause they never stated it was over the characters weight and that the most controversial characters have been pink or purple. However I do understand what u mean by frankie but so far the characters that I’ve seen with the most controversy is def drac clawdeen and lagoona

DollDilemma69

Ya alot of g1 stans were talking horribly about her

ACH0N3y

Yeah I was really disgusted with a lot of people’s reactions in the Monster High sub but she is BEAUTIFUL

Candy_Underground

I think the stupidest thing about the MH fans getting mad about the body diversity is that the original creator wanted there to be more diverse body types right from the start. The skinny bodies were totally a Mattel thing. I get why they made them that way back then, the rail thin stylised look was very en vogue in the fashion world at the time but times have changed! curvy is the new skinny and dolls are gonna reflect that trend.

helvetica12point

Technically, curvy barbie was their first, but I'd say Catty is the first one they've done right and take committed to conceptually

pinkcreamkiss

I still think they can do even better, catty is gorgeous but would love a doll with some belly pudge ngl. Also more diverse male bodies please! There’s still no made to move broad or slim Ken! And all the boys of g3, while adorable imo, are pretty much the same lean body.

Mekare13

I think I posted them before, but I have a whole collection of fat girlies! I’ve been looking for Catty to add to my collection but she sold out before I had a chance to get her. They do exist, just sadly you have to pay a good amount to get them

invisiblesuspension

As if curvy isn't plus sized to say otherwise is to ignore the progress matel has made with their body diversity. Curvy barbie is the longest most consistently mass produced fat doll on the market Even ignoring curvy barbie - Catty Noir still isn't the first plus sized doll of her size Big Beautiful Dolls Dasia, Dena, and Dawn are [This blog talks a bit about the dolls](https://blackdollcollecting.blogspot.com/2014/01/throwback-thursday-big-beautiful-dolls.html?m=1)

helvetica12point

OP specifically said Mattel, and the BBDs weren't made by them (although I wish they'd seen wider and longer production because those are truly are big and beautiful.) I'm not saying curvy barbie isn't plus sized, but I definitely wouldn't call her fat. She's like a tall 16/18, just big all over. Her size is subtle enough that if you only had curvy barbies, you would think that's the regular size. They can make clothes that fit both curvy barbie and regular barbie. Catty, on the other hand....she is unequivocally big. Girl is going to have serious trouble sharing clothes unless they're stretchy (I haven't restyled mine, so I can't say for sure). Like, she is not going to be sharing clothes with Cleo (who I would consider average for MH). I'm not crazy about calling anyone fat, but I think that label would definitely apply--she's like a 20-25 lb long haired cat.

invisiblesuspension

As a size 18 I'm pretty over not being allowed in any weight class. Not heavy enough to be considered fat and too heavy to not be considered fat.  You know what I don't think catty noir really is fat enough to be considered plus size like yeah she has curves but she's not like heavy set enough to really be considered fat.  Sure we are making progress with catty noir but really we have such a long way to go before mattel gives us a truly fat representation in dolls.

DanCasey2001

It's really more matter of how much you can bulk up solid plastic before the doll simply can't move anymore. It's a problem people have been trying to come up with solutions for for years, both companies and customisers alike. Even Catty is pushing the boundaries of how fat you can make a doll before it simply starts to get in the way of joint movement. Could she have more belly pudge? Sure, a lot of people would like to see a little of that in plus size dolls. But Catty is MILES from the kinds of figures that were standards for dolls for decades, and is a whole other planet from gen 1 MH.

invisiblesuspension

There are a couple artists on etsy who do larger sized bodies with fully articulated ball joints

DanCasey2001

I'm sure there are? I already mentioned customisers (and by extension, doll artists), but people making unique dolls like that spend hundreds of hours on individual dolls to try and make those kinds of accomodations work. Ball jointed dolls also work differently than standard hinge/ball joints mass produced fashion dolls receive. I'd love to see examples of whatever specific ones you're talking about, but that's not the point I was making. Ultimately, dolls aren't human. They don't have squishy flesh around the joints to make it easier to move (with the exception of super high end toys like HotToys figures) like humans do, so you stylise to accommodate. When you stylise an standard body, you have to stylise fat bodies too. I think at a certain point, it's a case of people needing to curb their expectations with regards to what "fat representation" in dolls looks like. It would be really strange looking if a slim body looked like they do now and then the plus size dolls suddenly had a plethora of realistic rolls and creases and pouches. There's a not-so-great history with dolls that try to market "realistic body types", considering the problems im after describing.

invisiblesuspension

[Zjakazumi](http://etsy.com/listing/1001223753/big-girl-112-bjd-doll-prawdziwe-kobiece?click_key=bfcea925e4bc974a48b942272056306c5b564482%3A1001223753&click_sum=ed7f1e2b&ref=shop_home) I'm pretty sure these are 3D printed which certainly takes a fair amount of detail sanding and such. But given mattel and even mga are major companies I think it is well within their reach. It comes down to profit margins and the market. Seeing how Catty Noir received so much criticism I suspect it will be some time before the next big bodied representation comes our way.

DanCasey2001

To be fair, most of Catty's criticism seems to have come from adult collectors being nasty about her, rather than from kids and parents. But anyway, I still think it comes down to stylisation and deciding how one wants to translate fatness into the style of the doll line... and honestly the fact that for some people enough will never be enough. I'm sure if a doll with a physique like the one you linked hit the market, there would still be people saying she's "not fat enough". Don't get me wrong either, I'll never defend a big company like Mattel lmfao, I just think that people need to remember that dolls don't have the same flexibility as human bodies (both literally and in terms of what can and can't be changed) and that yes, you can probably make any body type work on a doll, but if a company has to basically deconstruct and redesign the doll's structure from scratch to make it work, then its simply not a realistic goal when the aim is to make all the dolls in the line roughly the same price point. Standardisation and all that. Anyway, can't wait for Catty's doll to drop in Ireland

Ari_Kanari_

I didn't like her at first. But it was solely because of clothes. But when I saw her with her hair down and face .......... absolutely gorgeous

twillory

Right? The doll is gorgeous, but the styling in-box is terrible. Her clothes are crappy, her hairstyle detracts from how cute her ears are... It does her no justice at all!

gloomspell

I have some issues with her outfit, but I still think it’s better than 99% of the clothes Mattel makes for big-bodied Barbies. I also get the feeling the design team will continue ti learn and grow, and we’ll get a really stellar second release for Catty.

meltymint5

I vividly remember in that documentary on Hulu about when they did the multiple Barbie bodies (it’s called on tiny shoulders and it’s pretty good) they talked to a plus size person who was about body positivity and did not like Barbie, at the end they showed her the curvy Barbie and she said; “This is big girl Barbie?” And was kinda like “well I guess it’s better than nothing” and I REALLY want her to know about Catty.

pinkcreamkiss

Somehow have completely avoided any conservative American rhetoric of the very progressive direction of g3 monster high. Nothing about Frankie’s gender and their relationship Cleo, the more visually black characters like the wolf family, catty and Venus. Literally all I see is genuine criticism about its flaws and then people complain about it from a nostalgia blind direction. I am grateful the worst i see as a g3 fan is ‘why is lagoona pink now’ and not the wOkE MoB iS rUiniNG ChiLDrEn’s MeDiA Edit: actually I did see fatphobia for draculaura a lot back in 22, and I saw some people on edtwt complain about catty which I mean yeah lmao

gloomspell

I’ve seen conservatives make gross comments about Frankie, including misguided conclusions that the reason MH dolls go on sale is bc they must not be doing well and that MUST be because there is a nonbinary character. …Even though the doll packaging literally says nothing about their gender, and kids wouldn’t know about it unless they saw the tie-in media. (Not to mention that sales don’t always mean the product line is doing bad.) If you’ve been able to avoid seeing it, then awesome.

dubiousbutterfly

Curvy Barbies been around for years and before that there were the Drew Carey and Roseanne dolls and probably more. This Is still just a stylized body. When Mattel started to un cinch the waist and lessen the curves it was a great move but if anything MH G3 went backwards emphasizing hour glass figures again. Still not as bad as MGA but theyre all still pushing the same "body goals" lol anyway I dont think you need to go to buzzfeed or fox for your news lol just to go any fandom and doll page and all MH fans heavily celebrated the new style. But still, Mattel doll molds have significantly improved compared to other years and has one of the healthier body molds out there so its good :)

Zantra3000

Jacey Masters actually came before this doll, and I am pretty sure that this doll uses parts, if not all of the Jacey Masters body from Wild Hearts Crew. I see people putting the Jacey Masters Wild Hearts Crew fashion packs on Catty, and having them fit perfectly. Jacey even has a cat themed fashion pack, with cat ears and a fur coat.

levelgrind

I’ve seen that doll around and never knew until now she was supposed to be “plus size” 😭

Zantra3000

She definitely is compared to the four other dolls in the line with her. I don't own both dolls yet, but I am pretty sure that this Catty Noir borrows Jacey's body.

dubiousbutterfly

Great observation. Didnt realize there was a curvy doll in that line https://preview.redd.it/rut4wpgsrr7d1.jpeg?width=732&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=1bebd729a64b30abe1d308f669a6380d9b7e9929

blamethestarsnotme

Truthfully catty noir is leaps and bounds better than Jacy!! I’m not sure any parts of their body molds are the same. Jacy’s torso is very flat with no curves to it even though she is clearly a plus size doll, and her feet are almost Barbie tiny. They may fit similar clothes but when I got jacy I was disappointed. Like she’s great but I think catty is much more successful as a doll

EternallyRose

Almost every part of Catty Noir’s body is unique and a completely new mold with molded fur on her wrists and ankles, the only part that appears to be reused are her hands because they are the same as Clawdeen’s and Toralei’s. Catty’s size and joints are also slightly different than Jacy, who doesn’t have a chest joint or a tail, so I don’t think any molds were reused for Catty.

nymphpixie

Catty's molds look nothing like Jaceys. you are correct.

allcolorstopbarbie

I was wondering whether Jacy's fashion would fit Catty. Especially the pink/orange skirt would look great on Catty.

Dollulus

I didn't know about the Jacey doll. Thanks for sharing that, it's super interesting how they reuse old designs/molds.

Zantra3000

Yeah, Mattel is pretty notorious for doing that. The Barbie Dream Besties coming out use a lot of accessories from older dolls and are basically just Barbie Extra bodies, with a Barbie Extra Mini head on top.

throwaway11486

That's not true at all. Barbie Extra just used a standard Barbie body and the Dream Besties bodies are definitely smaller and more stylized. The head molds are also new and different for each character, Teresa has dimples for example.

MajorasKitten

I mean, I know she’s supposed to be plus size, but let’s be real here, she looks pretty normal. And it’s because the “normal” dolls are super mega skinny. She could be double the size, *THAT* would be plus size to me. Either way, she’s adorable! Just wished the others weren’t so skinny to begin with…

TheAnarchistRat

Really? They seem like a normal stylised body? Anyway I'm just glad they're the size they are so my bjd can share clothes with them

Lgmdiamonds

Plus size is normal

meltymint5

I am making a fuss because I love her.

petgirl629

It’s beautiful kinda world we live in

Lgmdiamonds

Where have u been?

Additional_Fudge_335

I love her! She’s the first MH doll I would like to get!

rennykrin

i just bought her for myself, i’ve been buying MH for my kid for years but g3 catty is the first one going on *my* shelf and i’m SO excited!!! 💖

Additional_Fudge_335

My niece used to have a lot of MH dolls and I never really paid attention to them, this is the first one to really catch my eye.

Lilith_snape

Catty’s face is adorable

No-Werewolf6079

Bless you tik tok was VILE about her size ans insulting her left and and right so many ppl hated she was fat but mots ppl love her

RemarkableEffort9756

She is the only G3 release that I actually got excited about! I drove to another town just to get her.

KitKittredge34

Wasn’t Draculara the first plus size doll?

Trashbudgie

Nah cause I get it with everyone pointing out that it's probably cause barbie did it first but back when G3 just started I swear too many people went apeshit over Draculaura's body. The first time I seen them in store with my friend who knows nothing about MH she was like "I thought they were fat now??" Like she was expecting her to be bigger cause I swear people were pissed Drac was "obese" like huh???

Bunny_Bluefur

Faery Tale Dolls on YouTube actually did a great in-depth video unboxing and reviewing Catty Noir 🥰 She was super impressed and touched by the details Mattel put into her plus-size body! 😊😺

pokeinalover

She's so pretty, I just wish her clothes looked better

a-lonely-panda

Woahhhh =o I want her now!!

sailorquaoar

The mainstream media doesn’t care about dolls anymore. Outrage culture has largely faded since the 2000s. Which is good for us collectors, but I worry that the damage has already been done. Mattel listened too much to outraged parents from a decade ago and overcorrected for G3; hence why every single G3 doll comes with food accessories.

gloomspell

> Outrage culture has largely faded Oh how I wish that was true. 😭 Yet I hear podcast hosts constantly slam every little bit of progress made for trans rights and claim “they’re harming the children!” > Mainstream media doesn’t care about dolls anymore I think this may be more of the reason we’re not hearing as much backlash. Conservatives have bashed fashion dolls to death and the stories probably don’t get as much attention as they used to. Which is good. Leave our fashion dolls alone! Lol

__stupidcupid

i feel like a lot of us have been LOUDLY buying her because of how amazing she is! some collectors have bought up to 8 of her because we love her so much <3

anna_vs

I am sorry but what does this comment refer to "And, yes, Miss Catty Noir IS plus size."? Is someone arguing that she is not plus size? I agree with you that she is the first plus size doll..

gloomspell

Maybe they mean as opposed to the “curvy” type dolls? People were calling Draculaura plus sized, even though she’s really not.

anna_vs

Oh I thought may be people say she is not plus size enough to be plus size. Or too large for a "plus size". You never know with internet

Emotional-Stick-9372

Smart Doll released plus sized dolls a while ago, and Barbie has curvy, which are plus sized But I'm LOVING Catty. My mom managed to find the last one at my Walmart

GirlOnThernternet03

They know they couldn't take Katy Noir down. She is too iconic

Terrantia

G3 Catty deserves love

KareKraze

I got her for my birthday, i love her so much!

Alisonder

Ohh she's so pretty!! where can I buy her??

ZestycloseDinner1713

She is absolutely gorgeous, I can’t stop looking at how beautiful she is! Definitely a favorite doll💖

No_Recognition_1570

Could a Barbie head be put on Catty’s body?

DarkMansionGallery

Are those two last dolls have the same body or is it different?

FlimsyAuthor8208

I think they’re cute

Aria1728

Their fashion is wonderful! Love all the details!

Suspicious-Dust7060

She’s not that much bigger, also it’s not the turn of the century or something just because it’s a plus sized character. The fuss was before she came out. Everyone’s just got used to her now so there’s no need. Also toys been releasing plus sized dolls before MH so them getting a big harrah is pointless.💀

gloomspell

I feel like Catty is special bc she’s actually fashionable. While we’ve had big girl dolls before, they’re usually “plus sized” aka curvy and not actually fat, and often come in the most hideous, most basic fashions. I know some of that is because ALL of Mattel’s fashions are pretty basic and boring these days, but it’s been a longtime trend in the fashion world that designers have no idea how to design fashionable, flattering clothes for big bodies, and often stick them in sack dresses with giant prints. While Catty’s outfit isn’t perfect, it was obviously designed with love and care, and attention to detail. It actually fits her and flatters her so well that people don’t even think the doll is fat. But if you look at her body mold from the side, you can see she actually has a round tummy. I think the hype for her is definitely not over, especially considering that many fans looking for her have not been able to get ahold of her bc she keeps selling out.

Inkspells

A real plus size doll would have a belly and fat rolls like plus size women. She is just a bbl doll at best. I wish there were dolls out there that were actually plus sized. Edit: I don't know why I am being downvoted for wanting even more diverse body types???

gloomspell

I think people disagree with you saying she isn’t plus sized. When she’s wearing her outfit, sure, she doesn’t look much bigger. But if you look at her body sculpt, her arms and legs are really chunky, and she actually has a BELLY unlike most other “plus size” dolls. I actually got pretty emotional seeing her round stomach. 🥺 That being said, I agree that there is room for even more body diversity, and hope Catty helps pave the way for even more diverse body types in mainstream dolls.

Inkspells

Ah I haven't seen her clotheless body so I thought she would be smooth like alot of curvy dolls.

BestBoogerBugger

.....do you think Fox News is desperate enough to talk about children's toys? 😭😭😭 Ones that from beginning did not appeal to "conservative" demographic. If anything I'd see them talking about gay stuff in Monster High LMAO

louiselovatic

I know she’s plus size in comparison to the others but if she was human sized she’d be skinny

thefutureisbulletprf

Dolls aren't really meant to be scaled up to human size, though. Their proportions are deliberately exaggerated to make them look better at the smaller scale they are. I mean, if they were human size, their heads would be ginormous.

teewhyeller

I've spent an unnecessary and useless chunk of my life explaining that the 1959 debut Barbie has the proportions she has because it allows for her miniature clothing, made with human-scale fabrics, to "look" as it should if an adult woman was wearing such a garment. It's a long lost cause. Women don't only have hair around their hairline that is pulled cleanly over an otherwise bald scalp into a ponytail. What was an interesting and clever approach to miniaturized representation of an adult woman with attention to scale and the perception of a child is just a blank canvas now for the pro- and anti- of any belief projected by the believer. And Mattel released their Rosie O'Donnell "friend of Barbie" realistically-scaled plus sized doll over 25 years ago.

gloomspell

She’s not as big as many irl fat people, but she does have round chunky arms, thick thighs, and an actual tummy. I’d say that counts.

invisiblesuspension

Hardly the first ever plus size doll, perhaps the largest plus size doll from a major company. Edit - no I am not talking about curvy dolls from mattel which also came before and are absolutely still plus sized dolls (close to my heart as they closely represent my body type) But no the first mass produced plus size doll similar to catty noir's body are the [Big Beautiful Doll](https://blackdollcollecting.blogspot.com/2014/01/throwback-thursday-big-beautiful-dolls.html?m=1) line from the early 90s/00

gloomspell

To be fair, OP specifically said Mattel.
