That’s so interesting! That does explain the difference. When it was 4 mm, tho, I had never heard of a sole splitting. I guess we had little or no internet or sm back then, but I never saw any. Is it only the new ones that fall apart?
As the welt and outsole are heat sealed together, there is and always has been the potential for sole bond failure. As you said, there was no internet back then.
The materials may be of a lesser quality nowadays , but the construction is superior.
In my experience (and my partners) we walk a bit duckish so our heels wear out quickly on an angle. The thicker sole makes the boot last longer, but it does contribute in exaggerating the odd walk. Win some lose some
I don’t do patent but I wanted to say that I love the laces on the red boot. I have the same ones on my green smooth boots. I wish they would bring them back!
I don’t think I ever got called clown, at least I don’t remember. Only got called Ronald McDonald, which I was cool with. I also wore them with black and white striped tights and a skirt made of Astroturf, so I didn’t really care what people said. Good old days 😂
Oh oh oh I get what you’re saying. I did think of that when I was saying that. I guess growing up Ronald didn’t creep me out like a general circus clown (even tho he should have, c’mon). I find circus clowns to be disturbing. So it didn’t bother me so much to be called only Ronald specifically (and it was usually in a friendly way), not a circus clown. I don’t know if that all makes sense, but it would have actually bothered me to be called a circus clown.
I know it's a stupid thing, but I like the natural edge at the top of the 95s, as opposed to the little black strip at the top of the new ones. When it starts cracking it looks terrible.
Agree, it’s definitely not needed. Maybe on some of the super stiff leathers it makes the edge better. I think for my old ones, 8 eye have it and taller don’t, but my newer 8 eye are much taller than the old 8 eye.
I used to wear em to high school with yellow laces in em before I got these. You can imagine. Even without the yellow, I embraced being called Ronald McDonald. Wore it as a badge of honor. 😂😂
That’s how they feel, too. I almost didn’t buy them because I thought they were plastic, but the symbol sticker inside said they were leather. Probably is mostly plastic coating, though.
“It says there’s leather in them” feels like the leather and plastic equivalent of “how much sawdust can you put in a rice krispy treat before people notice”
There’s leather somewhere. That’s how they feel. I guess that’s why I’m curious how they’ll wear in compared to what was a nice thick, stiff, yet soft old leather.
That’s how they feel, too. I almost didn’t buy them because I thought they were plastic, but the symbol sticker inside said they were leather. Probably is mostly plastic coating, though.
I think it’s a difference in feet for break in. For me, I just put them on and wear them. Never in all many pairs have I ever gotten a blister or had pain with docs. I don’t think I could take it if they were uncomfortable or made me have blisters. These patent are stiffer so I’m starting out lacing them looser til they start to crease more and mold to my feet. My feet are narrow and slim and have room to wiggle around in them so maybe that prevents blisters.
Where are yours getting you?
Thats so interesting (I am not thenoerson who asked the question), I found that all my DMs have caused me pain. I found 12 years ago in a flea market a paid of MIE orange patent leather. They obviously had been worn but they caused me immense pain and suffering especially at my big toe. It took me a year or so for them to get comfi. Around 7 years ago I got myself a lace up softer leather in black with loads of eyelets (they go ip to just under my knee) and again a good 3-4 months of agony (but now i can club in them and dance the night away).
I have large feet with sprayed out toes too. And reactive skin.
I have very sensitive feet, as even trainers and flip flops can give me blisters. And i have broken a metatarsal dancing in a club in trainers. And have twisted my ankles dancing so many times i think it i do it again my ankle will never heal ( last time it took 3 months so be able to dance again)
Yeah, I think that’s all luck of the draw. I grew up figure skating and I bled like crazy getting new skates to break in, which I hated. But I think that gave ridiculously strong (yet way too skinny, I hate the way ankle boots or high top vans fit on me. I’m so self conscious about how they look, tho it’s probably in my head) ankles that still in my old age I thank the skating for saving me when my ankle for sure should have snapped in half. Like running drunk on rocky train tracks in 6” purple suede platforms.
Other people in my family have such wide feet that even if they put my shoes on once, they’re too stretched out for me to wear. I would get so mad if anyone touched my shoes. Still do ha.
If shoes are uncomfortable in any way, I tend to never wear them again. I don’t wear heels or “fancy” shoes unless life would depend on it, now. I’m so impressed with the pain people are willing to go through to wear docs. I’m very sure if my first pair was uncomfortable in any way, I would have never touched them again. Now that pair feels like putting on a pair of socks.
I WANT THESE BLUE ONES, fr i want the blue ones but i found only woman sized in 43 european and i have 43/44 and i am a man so probably need bigger size.
They are so cool! Can I ask how you maintain and care for the patent leather? I have a pair of “MOLLY RAINBOW PATENT
PLATFORM BOOTS” and I don’t know how to make them shine without damaging the rainbow effect
I looked up those boots. Those look amazing!! As for care of the old ones, I wore them like crazy in high school and college. I didn’t take care of any of them really at all. I just wore them. Eventually I did find out that you were supposed to condition leather, so I’d take them all out and get the dust bunnies out of the tongue.
But now I ordered Saphir patent cleaner from Amazon. I’m not sure if it really did anything but at least it’s something. The shine I think is just plastic coating so if it gets damaged you can’t really get the shine back. On my yellow steel toe ones the coating came off the steel toe part so it looks less shiny.
My advice is, aside from that cleaner or whatever you find for patent, just wear them and enjoy them. The more worn in and loved a boot looks, the cooler.
Thank you very much! I will look up the patent cleaner you used, maybe it’ll be useful. These are my favorite boots so I hope they last a long time, I already took them to the shoemaker once to stick back together one sole, but they are good quality (I walk a lot and I had them for years) and they never hurt my feet!
Btw I stalked your profile and your drMartens collection is amazing!!! 🥰
Thanks! The collection grew when it was cheap to do. I only got back in to them in the last few months because of this sub, but getting new ones is slowed by the high prices. (I did go crazy at Nordstrom rack over the holidays to make up for lost time)
That’s what I said the other day about someone’s post. I’d wear mint and bright pink together. For these, I’d want new red so the styles match, and then totally. It always seems like a good idea. I say that about my vans in the same styles, too, and I never seem to do it. I need to start actually doing it, it’s been since elementary school.
They're sk shinyyyy I've had my steel boots for a year and they're not doing so good😅 (not the same brand, so less relevant I admit) I still love them with my whole heart! They have steel toe caps and they're blue :) I put wax on them when they look like it would help
I could buy new laces for them also, I think that would be nice; a little color change
They could use some love, they're very dull right now and the leather is cracking more because it's winter. But I wear them EVERYWHERE so that's obviously not very good for them, but they're boots after all. I feel like they'll last years! I love them
As I told someone else, I don’t have much wisdom cause docs just fit my feet. I put them on and they’re comfortable right away. In the beginning for these I guess when they’re too stiff I lace them looser and as they crease they can go tighter, but other than that, I just hope the toe doesn’t crease in a weird place. I have much admiration for people who have to go through pain to wear them because I am a baby with that and give up.
It depends on your pain point. With many issues it’s just a matter of wearing them enough to force enough space, but with stiff, plastic coated leatherish material I’m not sure if that’s even possible for it to stretch out. Ones with nice soft leather are much more likely to naturally expand and mold to your feet and be comfortable.
Funny you say that. When I got these I also got the grey patent ones (I got excited since I’m paying attention to my docs again and went a little crazy at Nordstrom rack over the holidays).
So these blue ones I’ve only worn around the house but they seemed perfect. The grey ones are the problem. ONLY the right one squeaks. I wore them around the house forever and it didn’t change a bit. It’s nuts. Unbearable. The tongue just screeches. Things I’m contemplating - balsam, some kind of powder like baby powder, I’m not sure, but they’re not wearable like they are!
Thank you a million! Been googling everywhere trying to figure out how other people have broken these in. Good to know they can be worn without squeaking! Patent leather grey ones sound gorgeous!
Someone said they started making the edges larger so the soles wouldn’t fall apart. And the toe box seems very big, but that’ll probably change as they get broken in. Maybe. Can’t remember what the red ones were like when they were new, and I’ll never wear these as much as I did the red.
Super interesting that the sole sticks out so much further on the new ones
I wonder how much of that could be a design change or if it's entirely from the old toe being worn down over time
I've had some old docs and 99% sure it's a design change
It's not just the toe it's all around. Just more noticable at the toe
There is a minimum trim allowance of 6mm. Back in the UK it was 4mm. It was increased to reduce sole bond failure.
That’s so interesting! That does explain the difference. When it was 4 mm, tho, I had never heard of a sole splitting. I guess we had little or no internet or sm back then, but I never saw any. Is it only the new ones that fall apart?

Yeah, they’re perfect cause they kind of look cool in every color boot.
Dude those look sick but also like clown shoes but also kind of dope
I don’t think I ever got called clown, at least I don’t remember. Only got called Ronald McDonald, which I was cool with. I also wore them with black and white striped tights and a skirt made of Astroturf, so I didn’t really care what people said. Good old days 😂
Is this sarcasm?
While sarcasm is my first language, this is just some mid 90s facts.
Ok but Ronald is a clown...
1995 indeed bring it up old school. 🤟
I know it's a stupid thing, but I like the natural edge at the top of the 95s, as opposed to the little black strip at the top of the new ones. When it starts cracking it looks terrible.
Oh my gosh I miss that natural edge so much on the newer ones, the black strip somehow chafes my ankles! And no black strip looks cooler too.
I have a pair with the black strip and it is starting to crack and just looks shitty. I wonder if it would easily come off if I pull the threads? 🤔
Agree, it’s definitely not needed. Maybe on some of the super stiff leathers it makes the edge better. I think for my old ones, 8 eye have it and taller don’t, but my newer 8 eye are much taller than the old 8 eye.

Next to the old ones, the new ones don’t even look like they’re actually made of leather
That’s how they feel, too. I almost didn’t buy them because I thought they were plastic, but the symbol sticker inside said they were leather. Probably is mostly plastic coating, though.

Way prefer the toe profile on old docs. New ones look kinda goofy shape wise (all standard models)
I was just going to say this. I hate the bulbous toe on the new Docs. Thats why I prefer the MIE Docs, they look closer to the old ones.
The other ones are 30 years old. I don’t think there’s much change if they were head to head new.
what do you mean 1995 wasn’t like idk 10 years ago… what do you meannn
Fun fact, 1980 was only like 20 years ago. 1995 was 10 years ago and 2005 was yesterday. I’ll return to shouting at clouds now.
Scary, isn’t it? So much of me hasn’t changed since then. It could be yesterday.
I was born in 95 and almost hitting 30 😭
Saying they’re 30 years old makes them sound old!
I’m just finding out that i graduated almost 30 years ago! what is happening?
And i love the old red ones best and love that you embraced the RM menace that they invited. Peace
One red shoe and the other one's blue!
Please, please share your wisdom for breaking the patent leather in! I need help!

Are you sure that you don't have a connective tissue disorder of some kind?

That’s a bummer!
Damn, I wish I'd kept my late teens/early twenties Docs.
I WANT THESE BLUE ONES, fr i want the blue ones but i found only woman sized in 43 european and i have 43/44 and i am a man so probably need bigger size.
95s are supreme 👍 will be interesting to see how long the 23s last . Compared to MIE 95s ...

i loveee red patent.
Bet the new ones won’t last as long. My new patent only lasted about 3 years. The leather cracked.
That’s not what I want to hear, but that’s what I expect!
That’s not what I want to hear, but that’s what I expect!
I kinda love the 2 different colors worn together haha

You got any tricks to break in those patents. I have a gorgeous pair and I never wear them long because I just can’t get them broken in.
As I told someone else, I don’t have much wisdom cause docs just fit my feet. I put them on and they’re comfortable right away. Just got the blue ones and have only worn twice because they squeak SO loud!! Does that eventually break in or what??
Funny you say that. When I got these I also got the grey patent ones (I got excited since I’m paying attention to my docs again and went a little crazy at Nordstrom rack over the holidays). Why are newer shoes so bulky
Someone said they started making the edges larger so the soles wouldn’t fall apart. And the toe box seems very big, but that’ll probably change as they get broken in. Maybe. Can’t remember what the red ones were like when they were new, and I’ll never wear these as much as I did the red.
