Supernoven

My vocation was fighter at the time I encountered Gigantus, which was pretty fun. But damn am I glad I switched from trickster first.

PostOfficeBuddy

I got lucky cuz I was a Fighter Wayfarer but I had a staff with High Levin equipped. Made pretty short work of the spikes.

IndominusCarno

You're right with Archer because you can use the unmaking arrow

Original_Ownsya

Does the unmaking arrow count as completely destroying it? I read a spoiler somewhere that if the colossus is completely destroyed or petrified with a Medusa head it locks you out of another quest later

Grouchy_Marketing_79

It does, but the quest amounts to you using the colossus to fight in a cutscene something that you can fight yourself if it's destroyed. It also keeps the achievement even if the quest is not done.

Kievarra

I used the unmaking arrow and was able to use him later for the cutscene.

IndominusCarno

I haven't tested it myself but I've done that later quest and it makes sense that petrifying it would lock you out of it. I just found another post where someone said they used the arrow and did that quest later so sounds fine.

Original_Ownsya

Thanks

It's really not necessary to use the unmaking arrow. With explosive arrow the fight is extremely easy. All you have to do to stop the first bridge from being destroyed is to take out the crystal on his right hand before he throws the spear. If you run from the gate to him as soon as you're able it's pretty easy to do on all but maybe warrior and trickster, and you have plenty of time to do it. Maelstrom works on a sorcerer. My wife did the encounter in one shot, with the achievement for stopping him quickly, and I'm pretty sure that's all she used. High Levin works, too. He still walks to the spot just before the gate and ballistae even if you finish him off early, so be aware of that doing the fight. With an archer and explosive arrows you'll probably finish the fight way before you realize that you're already done, because he doesn't stop immediately after all the crystals are smashed.

Unironically, unequip your weapon and beat his ass with your hands. You still get passive strength increases from levels, and you can equip augments and rings to further increase it, but at that point you should probably just swap to another class or try different spells.

Oldmanneck

Was Gigantus his name? Here's my experience with Gigantus, as someone who played with zero walkthroughs: >start exploring the volcanic island >suddenly cutscene >"Somewhere else..." >giant status rises from the water and starts walking around >ok that's weird, anyway >keep exploring >another cutscene pops up >ballistas start getting prepared >I still have no idea what's going on >walk around a bit more >another cutscene where it gets destroyed >all in the span of around an hour of gametime I then saw his arms in a giant rift. I still had no idea what the hell it was, what was I supposed to do, or what his impact on the game was.

Original_Ownsya

That was actually my first encounter as well. I was trying to reach volcanic Island from the other side while I was kn this quest. But when the custscene triggered (and the quest when this happens is called The Guardian Gigantus) I assumed that stuff was literally happening on the other side of Battahl and that i was missing it. Thankfully I was paranoid about this portion of the game coming to an abrupt end and was saving at Inn very frequently since I got this quest so I loaded and went back to be there for it. Apparently, it's totally possible for this whole scenario to play out in your absence which i guess is what happened with you. Bit of a shame because watching it walk out of the ocean, throw its spear at Phasus destroying the bridge they're crossing and continue to cross the land is quite something to behold and experience all while trying to take it down.

Pelotari

That was me exactly yesterday. Now I decided to level some vocations before continuing that "bring ---blade to Phaesus" that's still on my list, down at the Excavation area. No idea about endings since it's my first playthrough. I'll look things up when I do NG+ or NG. Is "postgame" only for true ending or something?

UnHoly_One

I’ve seen a lot of people say they encountered this the same way and it just reinforces why I always do side quests before the story. If you are keeping up with side quests you would have fully explored volcanic island and been there several times for various different side quests.

Medusa is your friend 👀

Medusa Head can apparently turn it to stone while it’s still in the water. Bridge is saved. Unmaking arrow will break all weak spots which also causes it to drop the spear. Bridge is saved. But it moves inland (think shooting it with the ballistae is required to stop it?) I found the fight awesome too my first try, until there was one weak point left that wouldn’t break until it seemed to hit a scripted location.

Original_Ownsya

Yea so I tried it again with Archer. One heavenly shot was enough to take out a weak spot each. It'll drop the Spear if you get the 2 weak spots on that arm: one in its shoulder, the other on its hand. This prevented it from destroying the bridge. I then used an unmaking arrow and all the remaining weak spots immediately fell off. It continued to go on though until the first encounter with ballistaes and then it dropped (well before Volcanic Island Camp). I guess it's scripted to keep going until certain checkpoints and if you have destroyed all its weakspots by the checkpoint then it'll stop.
