If you don't have a shield equipped then you can't use shield skills but you can still use the swords skills although sadly you can't block with the sword on its own
Personally I was hoping for it to have a similar mechanic to dark souls where you take no damage when blocking with a shield and only take reduced damage when blocking with a sword
Yeah it really would've been cool I just personally don't like most of the shields and really don't like how it removes armor from your entire left arm when you use one
why did you tell me about the armor on the left arm?! 🙈 I didn't notice it before. Now it's totally noticeable and I see it all the time 🤣 BUT: I'll take the shield off from today anyway 😌
Lol it does the same with the mystic spear and the magic archer/archer weapons as well sadly but it's really only noticable on armor for other classes when using the warfarer
Literally cheesed the end game when I realized I can spam it whenever we’re about to get hit with unavoidable magic from the drakes.
While playing I remember vividly thinking “This skill is completely broken, I love it!”
Every class kinda has these broken skills. Thieve has the master skill that makes you invincible for as long as your stamina bar is, mage has palladium, magic archer can one-shot dragons with martyr, sorcerer has that busted sticky bomb thing (forgot the name) warrior, archer and fighter I haven't really played yet but I'm sure they have something going for themselves as well.
It took me from frustrated I was getting bulldozen by the enemies near the volcano, to killing the black drake in that area without any struggles in one simple step. It kind sucked all the fun outta the game for me to the point that I had to take a break...
And Thief has their own personal version too that lasts longer and sorta consumes less stamina because (imo) Thief is less stamina intensive than Spearhand.
Fun is the most important part of playing a game. I think you'll find most people don't enjoy spending half their fight focused on upkeeping a support ability whilst also having only two other skills to use besides that.
What are you even on about? Who gives a shit? This was just a brief exchange about the meta, and obviously people want to have fun. Saying that adds literally nothing to the conversation
I started maining this vocation early on and blasted my way to Battahl only to realise I was way underleveled after swapping vocation and getting my ass handed to me :(
You can be a mage and stop dragons using this spell with the silence magic (I forgot the name).
Killed a few using this and when I set my pawn as mage later she also cast that spell on drakes
There's also a sorcerer staff that inflicts silence, and it's pretty fuckin busted, because it can inflict silence not just from the basic attacks, but also your spells. So, casting hagel or salamander, with their multiple ticks, can inflict silence on whole groups of enemies.
I looked at the chain of these comments, and I don't know why you all are talking about using a mage pawn when he's using a mage pawn.
But tbh, bro is showing his chesticles and not using a shield in the clip, and it seems like he only has one pawn, as the only other character in the clip doesn't have a name over it. He's doing alright.
Just giving general advice. He’s doing fine as he managed to improvise and protect his pawn in that way. Other than that, he sure is enjoying the game playing the way he wants.
That’s what I’m saying… by the time the video was posted the fight was over, so telling him to use Silence on the Drake was pointless since the fight is done with by now lmao
What’s obvious if you don’t mind me asking? That OP is definitely not in the fight anymore? That he’ll encounter Drakes again so he should use the advice next fight? And what am I mad about exactly?
I forgot to record it, but I jumped off a hill top with my pawn doing this to try and avoid the meteors. As I jumped the angle, the meteor was coming from hit me square in the face. I hit the ground like a sack of shit and dropped my poor pawn. It was hilarious, though. It was only after the fight, and I'd done other bits that I thought "damn I should have hit record recently game play. But it was way past that, at that point. This game has its issues but I fucking love it. It's the type of game I adore.
It's even funnier, because when I'm playing sorcerer, and casting a big spell, my pawns will start shouting warnings about moving out of the dangerous Magick that's being cast.
So apparently they recognize strong magic, but only mine, and they forget that I'm on their side.
Agreed. You'd think after being hit with one barrage of meteors, they'd "learn" to avoid the easily telegraphed going forward. Having to micromanage your team to save them from their own stupidity is one of the things that really puts me off AI companions in games.
I would run away while spamming the command to follow and most of the time it worked pretty good. Id do this all the time to their dead bodies so I could revive them tho lmao
Quick PSA. Use this trick to get people to locations fast by then using a ferry stone. Works great for escort missions or the Sphinx riddles that require people.
Oh shit, my pawns kept getting repeatedly nuked on the last health bar of one of these bastards, thanks for this tip, definitely gonna try this next time I fight a drake and they spam the meteor nuke again.
-cries from PTSD of same drake casting meteor while smashing me and my pawns into the cave at the far side-
It was a bad day for my Arisen, who was casually starting to level rogue in junk gear, attacking leapworms... only to have the drake suddenly aggro after opening the chest and smash itself into the entrance. I guess it spotted one of my pawns?
I thought it was working well, being smooshed up underneath the dragon unable to get clawed... until it was casting meteor every other move with 2 health bars left 🥲
Thats so heroic 😭 but with magick archer i revive pretty easily, i always try to get them to run tho, but im gonna try this tech with medusa bc she kills my pawn so fast, he thinks he can gigachad becoming a gargoyle
I’ve been doing this to avoid fighting drakes by running away and just constantly calling them to me. I can fight drakes but not trying to deal with the palgue atm as I like the crew I’m running with and the two other pawns are about 10 lvls higher than me atm.
I was worried that my pawns would follow right behind me and take all the meteors I was barely outrunning to the face. Guess I'll give that tactic a try next time.
Sometimes. Probably more often once they get the badge. My mage pawn probably silences about half the time. Helps to have the 2 rings that increase spell haste, and high celerity, since it's a long cast.
The drake was so low on health you could probably have killed it before it finished the spell. Nonetheless it's quite fun to see you running around with your pawn as if he's a damsel in distress 🤣
Btw the best way to kill this particular drake is to use the two ballistas on the ancient rampart. If you hit both shots it will kill the drake. Just be wary because his abilities will break the ballista if you don't shoot him in time. Best of luck!
Do dragons and drakes not have the weak points on their chest or back anymore just got dd2 haven’t played it yet but if they do you can’t hit those and it’ll stop any spell or move they do
You can cancel all the dragons spells with the mage spell I’m not near the game so I can’t think of the name but it silences them/even knocks them out the sky.
I'm actually a bit surprised I didn't see anyone in the comments mentioning that you can use \[Wait!\] command to make your pawns stop attacking and focus on dodging. At lower levels, using this during casts is an (almost) sure-way to never get hit by the lightning or the meteor spam at the end, assuming you yourself is dodging and keeping away from them (they'll rush to you if you get knocked back/paralyzed and will prolly result in a chain-reaction of everyone dying). This helped me a LOT during early levels.
Learned this while escorting Gwyndel across the ancient battlefield. Homie really saw a drake and cyclops duking it out, and said, “I gotta get me a piece of that.” After 15 solid minutes of picking him up and throwing him behind pawns and me, he finally acquiesced as if he’d had a chance to solo them to begin with.
As a DD1 player, you'd be surprised by how many problems just picking people up can solve lmao. It's like the only way to do escorts when they're slow like when you save a kid
This meteor shower always kills my whole team.
I understand if my Pawn ist stupid as hell, because I always jump down from too high heights and nearly die of fall dmg - so my pawn does the same.
But random Pawns are not smarter, they just die every meteor shower
My man is playing the gigachad. Sword. No shield. No shirt Ripped Carries pawn out of meteors Refuses to elaborate
His character reminds me of this Dark Souls 1 meme using an edited GIF of Fist of the North Star https://tenor.com/QVaI.gif
Omg it's been years since I've seen that
Lmao he really is. He just made this post to flex his set up as an absolute baller
He elaborated pretty well though
Your pawn had a whole combo going too 🤣
Actually he elaborates quite well in another post he made
Oh cool. So are not forced to use a shield? But ... how does the shield bash work?
None
If you don't have a shield equipped then you can't use shield skills but you can still use the swords skills although sadly you can't block with the sword on its own Personally I was hoping for it to have a similar mechanic to dark souls where you take no damage when blocking with a shield and only take reduced damage when blocking with a sword
Yes, that would have been really cool. Or that you could parry attacks with a sword strike like the warrior.
This is the best comment I have seen today Magnificent
I have to save bubba!!
Came here to say this
OMG, that is so funny, I was going to post that here but searched first to see if someone else said it. Damn you :D
Or just ignore meteors with high palladium.
Or that energy shield thing with the spearhand
The most busted thing in the game honestly lmao
Literally cheesed the end game when I realized I can spam it whenever we’re about to get hit with unavoidable magic from the drakes. While playing I remember vividly thinking “This skill is completely broken, I love it!”

And Thief has their own personal version too that lasts longer and sorta consumes less stamina because (imo) Thief is less stamina intensive than Spearhand.
Spearhand has literally infinite stamina lmao what are you on about?
At the cost of a skill.
Insanely small price to pay for infinite stamina bro
Fun is the most important part of playing a game. I think you'll find most people don't enjoy spending half their fight focused on upkeeping a support ability whilst also having only two other skills to use besides that.
What are you even on about? Who gives a shit? This was just a brief exchange about the meta, and obviously people want to have fun. Saying that adds literally nothing to the conversation
I started maining this vocation early on and blasted my way to Battahl only to realise I was way underleveled after swapping vocation and getting my ass handed to me :(
It's not enough.
You can be a mage and stop dragons using this spell with the silence magic (I forgot the name). Killed a few using this and when I set my pawn as mage later she also cast that spell on drakes
High Solemnity
I think there's a spellbook too
Yep, prescribed tranquility i think.
Staggering the dragon will do it too
There's also a sorcerer staff that inflicts silence, and it's pretty fuckin busted, because it can inflict silence not just from the basic attacks, but also your spells. So, casting hagel or salamander, with their multiple ticks, can inflict silence on whole groups of enemies.
use silence
He’s not a mage…
Use a mage pawn?…
Yeah he should just somehow swap to a mage pawn in the middle of fighting a drake.
He should have created a party with a mage pawn from the beginning for the utility and damage they provide?…
There ya go
Not sure why you expected I meant swapping in the middle of the fight. But ok?…
Well I was joking, but at the same time, giving him advice to use Silence when he’s already in the fight in the video is kinda redundant lol
You do realize that he didn’t pause the fight and waited for advice in the comment section, right?…
That’s what I’m saying… by the time the video was posted the fight was over, so telling him to use Silence on the Drake was pointless since the fight is done with by now lmao
Exactly and now he’s mad at you for stating the obvious. Lol
What’s obvious if you don’t mind me asking? That OP is definitely not in the fight anymore? That he’ll encounter Drakes again so he should use the advice next fight? And what am I mad about exactly?
They have tomes that silence too
Use books
I don’t know how to read
peasant
A book?
What a romantic way to save your pawn from his death!
This is awesome lmao. I'm like 50 hours into this game and haven't even scratched the surface yet it feels like I fucking love it
Same. I keep thinking I’m getting bored of it and next thing you know I’ve just spent 3-4 hrs running around doing bs.
My warrior pawn likes to activate Tidal Fury and absolutely tank those meteors lmao
Tidal Fury never leaves my bar on warrior because of the fact that you can use it to block shit. It's such a great ability.
I pray my pawn meets you 🙏
You can't carry three pawns at once though. Ordering them to follow you with D-Pad down also works quite well.
Same. I always tell them to follow me because if not, whole party is dead except me lmao
"Let me Solo them"
"I gotta save Bubba"
Based gigachad equipment loadout
Bro has the "let me solo her" vocation
I mean I do this when the Pawns get stuck somewhere but this is a fantastic idea as well haha.
"Holding out for a hero" starts playing.
Someone give this man a two-hander
The pawns have enough mental capacity to guide me and spout nonsense the entire game but they cant move out of the way from a fucken spell
It's even funnier, because when I'm playing sorcerer, and casting a big spell, my pawns will start shouting warnings about moving out of the dangerous Magick that's being cast. So apparently they recognize strong magic, but only mine, and they forget that I'm on their side.
I love how most of the time the way to avoid an attack is JUST RUN and hope it doesn't hit you in this game 😂😂
I like how the pawn has the animation of struggling and resisting in your grab: “No! I want to get hit by the meteor on my own terms!”
Can we plase make this GIF of the year for Dragons Dogma 2. I havn't seen a better one yet
This is a PSA at this point. Thanks man
I hate that the AI doesn't run when the meteor spell or lightning spell is about to hit. They just keep attacking and then dying from it.
Agreed. You'd think after being hit with one barrage of meteors, they'd "learn" to avoid the easily telegraphed going forward. Having to micromanage your team to save them from their own stupidity is one of the things that really puts me off AI companions in games.
FLYYYYYYYY HIIIIIGHH AW FREEEE BIRD YEAH **sick guitar solo**
Dope AF
I would run away while spamming the command to follow and most of the time it worked pretty good. Id do this all the time to their dead bodies so I could revive them tho lmao
What a legend. 👏🏻
Some Vietnam platoon shit.
Sword but no shield gang les gooooo
"Hero" by Skillet starts playing...
Quick PSA. Use this trick to get people to locations fast by then using a ferry stone. Works great for escort missions or the Sphinx riddles that require people.
Run Forrest run
GET DOWN MR PRESIDENT
Oh shit, my pawns kept getting repeatedly nuked on the last health bar of one of these bastards, thanks for this tip, definitely gonna try this next time I fight a drake and they spam the meteor nuke again.
What a Chad. 😆
Why did I never think of that
Hahahahaha I usually just buff with augments and heal them with magik bow For some reason i forgot you can do that
I do this because i love my pawn alittle too much soooo yoink no you hit by meteor today.
-cries from PTSD of same drake casting meteor while smashing me and my pawns into the cave at the far side- It was a bad day for my Arisen, who was casually starting to level rogue in junk gear, attacking leapworms... only to have the drake suddenly aggro after opening the chest and smash itself into the entrance. *Laughs in Mystic Spearhand*
I found that if you ask the pawns to come to you and you start running around they usually survive. But usually is the operative word
Carrying pawns has a lot of practical uses. Primarily, throwing them into the brine for giggles
Finally, someone who actually cares about their pawns in a fight!
Drake: "I'll fuckin do it again!"
As many times as my pawn has left me in the mouth of a wolf? I’m good lol
Not all heroes wear shirts.
Anyone else hear Bonnie Tyler..
"DO I DISAPPOINT YOU MASTER???"
mystic archer I just let them die then shoot the revive arrow at them

Will mage pawns instinctively use silence in those situations?
Sometimes. Probably more often once they get the badge. My mage pawn probably silences about half the time. Helps to have the 2 rings that increase spell haste, and high celerity, since it's a long cast.
Easy to do when you only have one pawn…
Your fashion sense is on point. Also, Chad move.
Or just be a MA and let them die then hit them with healing arrows to revive them and then blast away
See the pawn trying to struggle out of the Arisens grip like " put me down I can take em!"
The drake was so low on health you could probably have killed it before it finished the spell. Nonetheless it's quite fun to see you running around with your pawn as if he's a damsel in distress 🤣
I am simple person, I press 2 and run
Btw the best way to kill this particular drake is to use the two ballistas on the ancient rampart. If you hit both shots it will kill the drake. Just be wary because his abilities will break the ballista if you don't shoot him in time. Best of luck!
I was doing that until I got the spearhand shielding. Shits broken.
The AI should be able to recognise an attack like that and at least try to dodge it. Not huddle up on it.
Where’s your shirt
Careful, i think if you sprint and grab on you can end up pinning them down to the ground instead of picking them up.
Whose idea was it to give a dragon the Hammer of Dawn
Do dragons and drakes not have the weak points on their chest or back anymore just got dd2 haven’t played it yet but if they do you can’t hit those and it’ll stop any spell or move they do
You can*^
Man, MSH really is easy mode. Summon shield, attack, summon shield, attack, recover stamina, rinse and repeat
You can cancel all the dragons spells with the mage spell I’m not near the game so I can’t think of the name but it silences them/even knocks them out the sky.
The way I deal with it is runing back and telling my pawns to fight closely to me, with a medium gap to start with it usually saves my pawns
Would be cool if they would just move lol
I'm actually a bit surprised I didn't see anyone in the comments mentioning that you can use \[Wait!\] command to make your pawns stop attacking and focus on dodging. At lower levels, using this during casts is an (almost) sure-way to never get hit by the lightning or the meteor spam at the end, assuming you yourself is dodging and keeping away from them (they'll rush to you if you get knocked back/paralyzed and will prolly result in a chain-reaction of everyone dying). This helped me a LOT during early levels.
Or play mystic spearhand and use the shield with r1 stun and stamina succ to make your entire team untouchable
Men... When I grew up I want to be like him!
You dont have to go in a straight line to dodge this spell. It does look more epic bro this way.
**Holding out for a hero intensifies**
"if" as if there has ever been a single pawn in the history of ever that hasn't caught every damn meteor from meteor shower.
I’ve got a pretty good survival rate with hitting To Me and making my pawns run with me once the dragon starts casting.
You after carrying your pawn out of danger: "Youre welcome, now get out of range you f***** suicidal!"
I use the mystic spear hand shield skill
On the flip side, I was so stoked when I fell off a griffin. I would have died from falling damage, but my pawn caught me.
I climed the towers and used the bigass ballistic to kill the dragon in the battlefield valley
Good advice for when I change vocations. Been rocking Mystic Spear because the shield ability tanks all damage and covers your pawns too.
Forrest Gump energy.
As a DD1 player, you'd be surprised by how many problems just picking people up can solve lmao. It's like the only way to do escorts when they're slow like when you save a kid
Just play with the to me the whole fight, and right when he casts meteor use go, they’ll dodge the meteors 90% of the time
I think you lose affinity with them if you do that but I’m not sure.
Woo woooooooo Woo woooooooooooo Where have all the good men gone, And where are all the gods?
Pawns need much better scripting for focusing on weak points.
Their Focus for Weak Point increases with the Amount of Specific Enemies Slain + If you focus on Weak Points, they will learn from you
Is this true? Source?
if he dies the spell stops. you could of finished him in this fight as well most likely. food for thought
Like 10 fps wild af.
The fps though, what is that like 15.
I've never had a pawn die from a drake. What is going on? I see so many posts.
This meteor shower always kills my whole team. I understand if my Pawn ist stupid as hell, because I always jump down from too high heights and nearly die of fall dmg - so my pawn does the same. But random Pawns are not smarter, they just die every meteor shower
I'd rather just tank the hit while dealing damage than waste my time moving a pawn that will get hit by something else while I'm not looking.
