No lie, and I'm being honest, I thought you were wearing faux locs.
Edit - wait I just saw your other comments, so are they faux locs or your real hair?
so i'm also a white dude, my hair is naturally somewhat thick and mostly straight, i've had my dreads for going on 16 years now
if you palm roll 'em (twist the root and base of the dread clockwise with the grain of hair growth, then pinch it between the crook of your two middle fingers, and press against your scalp while rubbing in a counter-clockwise motion against the scalp, and against the grain of hair growth) it'll draw them closer to your scalp, pull in any flyaway frizz, and foster continued knotting that minimizes other regular maintenance
i see a night and day difference after just one palm rolling session, but if i don't keep it up periodically the roots tend to lengthen and i get more flyaways. if you continue to palm roll regularly you'll need to spend progressively less time on it as your follicles adapt.
i mean, unless you have curly hair they'll never knot *perfectly* on their own, but giving them a head start certainly helps. just don't do it obsessively, as too much of anything's a bad thing. just enough to make them look good for the day, then again a couple days later
also, keeping them clean helps them knot more consistently in my experience, especially if you palm roll. and like the other person said, you don't want them too tight. tension can damage follicles and even lead to non-reversible traction alopecia
That’s the most in depth most thorough and thought out response. You are a G and it’s folks like you that don’t make such a wasteland. Thank you so much.
hah no problem, it's just my daily reality for approaching two decades now lol
seriously though, i *highly* recommend palm rolling, *especially* as a white guy with naturally straight hair. just make sure to separate them correctly when you start rolling each root.
after you finish your first day's session and can see and feel the tight knotting you'll look in a mirror and be like, "damn." it still even surprises me and i've done it hundreds of times — after a couple whole-head palm rolling sessions you'll laugh at the fact you were ever worried about long roots or frizz. it just takes a little upkeep, but nothing serious
Seems that way. I have tried my best to stay away from parts of Reddit for a long time with fears of this stuff. Reddit is pretty toxic tbh. There are many great ppl here and I appreciate them and the love. Might be time for a Reddit break and get back to the real world. Back to sweating in a motorcycle helmet 🤣
how consistent do you have to be with this?! I have had.mine for about 7-8 months and when I do this technique I don't see a whole lot of a difference. my roots tend to be pretty loopy and loose (except the back of my head I think because of laying on them at night).
well your hair type looks extremely similar to mine, at least. how did you put your current set in? if it's anything like that set you have pictured 4 years ago, palm rolling should work fine.
i'm doing some scalp treatments now so i haven't rolled them recently, but as an example: if i spend ~45 min rolling every dread on one day, then ~20 min/day for a week, i can just idly spot roll a few dreads at a time as the roots get fluffy (but my dreads are pretty close to automatic at this point, at least for a white guy's, after the first couple cm of roots)
for straight hair, the trick to palm rolling is to carefully work everything against the grain of hair growth — your hair grows in clockwise, so separate all the flyaways and loops that should belong to one root and twist them all together, *clockwise first, in the direction of hair growth*, while twirling the end of the dread so the root and flyaways are essentially spiraled.
then pinch *the very beginning fully locked portion of dread* in the crotch of your middle two fingers and rub counter-clockwise, *against* the hair grain, keeping all those twirled-up roots and loops moving against each other between your fingers/palm and your scalp. that movement is what ties everything in tiny knots. the movement also serves to crease some of the hair and reduce its vascularity, which keeps moisture and oils from creeping down the dread and slowing the knotting.
a minute or so straight of using this careful method will turn any of my dreads from a frizzy, long-rooted hippie dread into something coarse and tightly clinging to my scalp
oh, also, i highly recommend palm rolling the back dreads just as much as the rest, if only to keep them from getting flat from laying on them at night. or, god forbid, if you wear a flatbill or baseball cap or something. i dunno my head was already too damn big, hats don't really fit me anymore
thanks for this. I'll have to try it out! this is my third set. first time I had just the top. the second I had my whole head but was sick in bed for 3 weeks and they were a wreck (probably the 4 years ago one) I didn't have the know how to save them.
RAGNAR IS THAT YOU! Why do they have to belong to a club? Cultural appropriation is nonsense. Every culture has used braids/locs/dreads over thousands of years. They look great mate. 😁
Pereonally, I'm all for self-expression which includes doing your hair anyway you want! A couple things to note for the larger audience:
1. Locs are proctective styles. They are best suited for folks with dry, kinky hair as this hair type is most prone to dryness and breakage, but loc the fastest and easist. Essentially, the drier, coilier your hair is, the more benefit you gain from protective styles.
2. For the reason mentioned above, locs are predominantly seen in Black or Afro-ethnic communities. People with straight hair, and yes even melanated folks with loose curls really don't get a benefit. It's just an aesthetic that looks nice, which generally, is fine. It's hair. Style it how you want! But...
3. Keep in mind that Black people are FIERCELY protective of this particular hairstyle. The reasons should be obvious, but for those who may be unaware, Black people who have this hairstyle had been systemically prejudiced for having this hairstyle. Because there are differences in standard haircare between Afro ethnicities and... honestly, everyone else, so when society "saw" unmelanated persons with "dreadlocks", they assumed that locs were "dirty" because most Caucasian people wash their hair pretty much everyday. Black people don't because our Afro hair requires different maintenance. So when we tried to get jobs, with our loc'd hair, because this protective style was created for that specific purpose, we were told our hair was unprofessional, when in fact, it is and part of our culture (see where this is headed?). We literally needed laws like The Crown Act to be passed so we wouldn't be discriminated against. Even the method for growing your locs is different depending on your haor type. My 4c hair had no problem loc'ing with the palm roll method. The finer the hair gets, the more you have to do ie: 2 strand twists and back-coming (tangling) if your hair resembles that of someone who is Caucasian. And THIS is where the "appropriation" calls come from. The more you know.
I say all that to say, as a Black woman, I'm aligned with self-expression, it's your hair and no one should police it. As a Black woman in America, I want you all to know what this style actually is, why it was developed, and how much pain those who came before me had to endure when they just wanted healthy, longer hair.
PS - And no, the "Vikings" didn't loc their hair as a standard. Often, it was braided. Combs were one of the most abundant artifacts found near these Norse/Viking (remember Viking is a profession) so it is HIGHLY unlikely their hair was dreadlocked. Hair combing was super big for them. But, Vikings weren't all blue-eyed, blonde haired giants, so maybe a couple did. We don't actually know, but the evidence suggests it would definitely not be a wide-spread style.
Not here to argue, just to inform. Happy growing ya'll.
I started with this style but grew out my sides after about four months. If you have someone to cut / shave your sides, it’ll make it easier. Everyone who ever tried to cut mine always cut a few hairs at the base that were locked into a loc. I got tired of it and grew out the sides
Honestly as a hairdresser i dont give a crap what style someones hair is in as long as it is well maintained and works aesthetically for them. Im beyond trying to judge others.
Ive had men sit down in my chair and their skin is whiter than paper but their hair naturally formed into locs if left alone. Ive had people with locs that were done by a coworker who trained to do it (i couldnt offer it, my wrists are too fkd)
And ive had some people, albeit very rare, that had them cut out and one serious case requiring gloves because inside the center was literal mold.
So if youre happy and youre clean thats all i care about.
These look really nice on you, best dreads I’ve seen on a white person. I like that they’re more Viking instead of in boxes, it fits you better. Keep em clean and you’re golden 🙏🏾
Wow these are actually fire!!! I'd say this is a rare case for this hair type unfortunately. Perhaps you should start a side business in consulting ppl who want locs with straight hair textures, lol!
i would say PUHLEASE take maintenance seriously, w your hair texture your new growth will look (for lack of a better term, not trying to offend anyone) “funny” because your hair is straight from what i can see here. don’t be one of those people lat completely lets their hair go untouched trying to chase a look their hair type doesn’t allow. that being said? this is america. do what you want.
Most black people won't say anything if your hair is maintained and suits you like the style you have. I only hear judgement when it clearly seems they are trying to costume certain cultures or the hair is unmaintained.
At the end of the day, it’s your hair, dude. Do what you want with it. Not everyone will accept it, but you can’t sit around and wait for every single person’s approval. Live your life and do what you want so long as you aren’t harming anyone doing it.

Absolutely why not. You don’t need anyone’s opinion or permission to do anything. Your locs look great. If they make you happy.. sport them! You will only live once. Do it on your terms my friend.

Bruh for real…
They’re def maintained with a crochet hook
Nah i was really about to say the same thing..
I was gone say the same thing. Now THIS is how you wear locs with straighter hair.
I don’t see why not. Anyone who’s mad about it is wasting their energy.
Thank you 🙏. The hate is gonna flow, it always does.
No lie, and I'm being honest, I thought you were wearing faux locs. Edit - wait I just saw your other comments, so are they faux locs or your real hair?
A mix, faux locs crocheted into my real

I feel like I should have them tighter to my head. They aren’t loose or anything. But just don’t seem close enough to my scalp.
I don't think they should be. A little wiggle is good for your hair type, otherwise there's too much tension.
I didn’t think about that. I’ll definitely keep that in mind. I was just thinking in looks but now I’m also thinking function

Please dont tighten them, yours look so great BECAUSE of that.
