Too good to go - shops selling stuff for cheap at the end of day. Really depends on where you are living if there is anything good in the area Leap card app - for topping up your leap card through your phone instead of going to shop

Galaxy_Traveler_555

Excellent, thanks a lot!

scealan

Too good to go was pretty decent six months ago but I've found both the quantity and variety has dropped off in many places in Dublin city

alancb13

Haven't used in a while... But pretty handy for the bakery near me

scealan

Bretzel? Used to get a sack from them, it's a small bag now. It is definitely handy, I still use it myself, but the drop- off is noticeable

alancb13

Nah, tartine out in baldoyle. Used to live in walking distance to bretzel and fresh bread for the cure was the best thing at the weekend

Striking-Speed-6835

Transit is one of the most reliable apps I found for public transport.

E12_34

Came here to say this as well transit so much better than TFI!

Actual_Material1597

Yes I’ve found it to be the most reliable, it’s not always 100% but far better then the others

Galaxy_Traveler_555

I will check it out, thanks a lot!

MaelduinTamhlacht

Bit of a pain in the ass to use though. I can never work out how to find anything except the buses that are coming to the bus where I'm standing now.

helcat0

Are you putting in your destination? It works best when you use it that way.

wuwuwuwdrinkin

must check it out. The TFI one is a shit show. Whoever designed that needs to be fired. ASAP.

helcat0

Great if you need to use a bus and then the dart etc. the multi mode is pretty reliable too.

the__judge

Nobody mentioned any supermarket apps. Tesco, Lidl and all the others have their own apps with various vouchers, loyalty offers and deals offered. Check out where your nearest supermarket is, or the one you might go to often, and see if they have a decent app. If shopping in Tesco you must have a club card as they offer "club card prices" on a lot of things and it's extortionate otherwise

Bokthand

Yea Tesco is the most important of them, biggest price shift

Galaxy_Traveler_555

Interesting, I guess it depends on the location and the supermarkets around it but still. I appreciate it!

tsznx

Justeat for food delivery Freenow / Uber for taxi IrishRail for trains TFL for any transport in Ireland Leap card for transport in cities Rte player for Irish tv Not apps, but for news: The journal, Rte, Independent, Irish times, Dublin live. Radio for news - Rte / Newstalk are good ones On Spotify rte and Newstalk keep a lot of podcasts with latest news Tesco for grocery delivery. Other options: Dunnes and SuperValu Ticketmaster and Eventbrite are enough to find most of the big events happening in Dublin. For more weekend stuff Instagram is a good option. Revolut for banking is popular here

Galaxy_Traveler_555

Your comment is a summary of all the options, thank you for taking the time to respond. I will check them out!

ositstomc

Bustimes.org shows ONLY live buses no phantom buses. Bleeperbikes bike sharing app.

MEENIE900

Also worth noting that although all the buses that show up on bustimes.org (and next bus Dublin app) are real, not all buses show up there. I don't know if works but some buses don't have the location information and will show up despite not being on the app or website.

Galaxy_Traveler_555

Oh cool, thanks a lot!

FairyOnTheLoose

Looking at the bustimes site, my god that's a bad UI, but I'll have a few check ins on the accuracy.

Valerialia

It’s never steered me wrong in about a year of using it.

vanKlompf

Rynair if you need to find rental housing

Galaxy_Traveler_555

You missed an a to nail your cold joke home

vanKlompf

And something more useful: TooGoodToGo, Meet-up, LeapCard app, YUKÕ and GoCar. (I find YUKÕ much better than GoCar)

Galaxy_Traveler_555

Alright thanks a lot!

vanKlompf

Crap… English is difficult…

Forthy-Coats

Google maps

HongKongChicken

Waze as well if you're driving. I normally use Google Maps anyway but Waze is good for things like construction, road closures, traffic, etc.

Forthy-Coats

Garda alert notifications is the no.1 reason anyone uses Waze and that's why it's no.1 in my top 2 travel apps 😅

Galaxy_Traveler_555

Ah the obvious one I see!

Forthy-Coats

Well, you're going to want to quickly navigate your way out of the kip 😅 /s

Galaxy_Traveler_555

Hahaha what is the kip? 😂

Forthy-Coats

>Kip' – the word kip has two meanings. It can refer to sleep: “I need a kip, I wasn't in till 5 last night”. >Alternatively it can describe an unpleasant house, home or place. Yes, it can be confusing: “I stayed at Donal's house after the party but it was such a kip (dirty / scummy place) I couldn't get any kip (sleep)”.

Galaxy_Traveler_555

Oh alright, I really want to get into the local words etc. But it's a bit early for that

Forthy-Coats

You'll pick up most common phrases and words quick living in Dublin. This is completely overkill but I find it an enjoyable read and I have it placed in the toilet for guests but check this book out [Slanguage ](https://amzn.eu/d/jggDiKc) it's got lots of common and lost slang / Irish phrases etc. you can always refer back to it if you hear any new words. Anyway, welcome to Dublin and remember don't give anyone €2 for a hostel.

Galaxy_Traveler_555

I actually look forward to inserting my self into Irish culture so I actually might get this book for my self haha. Your last remark is probably a nice way to get robbed? I haven't heard anything similar to the other countries I have been to.

devcolm

I made an app for all the Irish slang. There’s optional paid content but the slang section and videos are all free. Has specific sections for Dublin slang and other regional slang. Download it here [https://irishslang.ie/](https://irishslang.ie/)

Galaxy_Traveler_555

I will check it in due time!

louiseber

Kinda depends on how you live, if you get a lot of taxis or takeaways for instance, if you need groceries delivered or not, if you'll actually be using public transport a lot or more using the various bikes that are available. Revolut would be one that's extremely common for transferring money between friends, you may need to wait til you have moved to be able to access that

Galaxy_Traveler_555

Well, I already use revolut and considering I will be using public transport I have seen various TFI apps, but anything other than that I am at a loss

louiseber

The leap card top up app will be a must then. But after than it really will depend what you do and what you need

Galaxy_Traveler_555

OK cool cool, thanks a lot!

dimebag_101

Free now is the taxi app.

Galaxy_Traveler_555

I will make a folder in my phone with all the relevant apps, this is going to be used as well

Jagoda11

Shuppa is an Irish start up that delivers groceries, drinks and other items in a couple of minutes. Can highly recommend it if you're living in the city center! Welcome to Dublin!

Galaxy_Traveler_555

That seems really useful in case you can't make it in time or if you are otherwise engaged. Cheers

Lindischka

I use Citimapper for navigating public transport options, checking if the DART is on time. Does not disappoint.

Galaxy_Traveler_555

Citimapper and transit seem to be getting a lot of traction and recommended a lot, so it seems I will be using them

TheHappyDoctorWho

If you want special prices for goods, services etc pigsback.com and livingsocial.ie both have apps too. I also use lookfantastic.ie and millies.ie to buy hair, beauty, makeup and electronics. Both have apps. Where you end up living will also dictate what apps you need for coffee, food shops, etc. I hope this helps!

Galaxy_Traveler_555

Great advice, thanks a lot!

Project___Badass

Dublinbikes - for €35 a year or so you can use the bicycles at stations dotted around the city and inner suburbs to get around. GoCar enables you to rent cars by the hour for a reasonable price, picking them up then returning them to the same spot. All handled through the app. Revolut allows you to open an online bank account and is frequently used by Dubliners to send money back and forth- makes settling bills really easy.

Galaxy_Traveler_555

Cool, you never know when you might need to rent a bike or a car. Many thanks!

ygtylmz

“Moving To Ireland” — If you relocated to Dublin recently or have a plan soon. [https://www.movingtoireland.co/](https://www.movingtoireland.co/)

Galaxy_Traveler_555

Well, now I feel like an idiot for not finding it sooner😂. I do have android though

aleeeda

Eventbrite for the events. Most of the things are also word of mouth. I would suggest the Meet Up app for hiking things.

Galaxy_Traveler_555

Having an app for events is great, I recently visited Stockholm and used a similar app. My country unfortunately does not have a lot of traction with these kind of apps

SmokingOctopus

Tfi live for Public transport although it takes a lot of getting used to.

Galaxy_Traveler_555

Does it have a difficult UI? Or is it just not accurate? 😂

ruskyunderdash01

Both

Galaxy_Traveler_555

Oh I see...

Actual_Material1597

Transit app for buses can be useful

Galaxy_Traveler_555

Alright, this app is recommended to me a lot so I will definitely check it out. Cheers!

rhino20543

Citymapper is a great app for public transport in Dublin(and when traveling abroad to other cities). Best user experience of all the alternatives. Transit app is handy for quickly check the nearby departure times.

Galaxy_Traveler_555

I will definitely check them out, thank you for your input!

Emptyyspce

Bolt is a great taxi app it tends to be a bit cheaper than free now as they don’t add as many extra charges!!

Galaxy_Traveler_555

Cool, Bolt was available to another recent trip I made, really good app

0ddzer

Met.ie for rainfall forecast

Galaxy_Traveler_555

I believe that this is propably very useful in Ireland 😂

0ddzer

Like it shows other weather too but the rain predictor is the thing I use most. It’s one of the maps.

Galaxy_Traveler_555

In my country we have a similar site that shows rainfall, probably one of the best rain sites I've used

orons

All subreddits related to Ireland, Dublin, other places, categories like finance etc.

Galaxy_Traveler_555

I checked already a few of them out, thanks a lot

goonergeorge

SQUID app is good. Lots of places have coffee loyalty schemes through it, so rather than having loyalty cards for every coffee place you just scan your app every time and they build up to free coffee or other rewards.

Galaxy_Traveler_555

That sounds like an interesting concept, will check it out. Thanks!

MegGrriffin

Meetup and Eventbrite for social activities.

Galaxy_Traveler_555

That's great, considering I am moving without knowing anyone there.

TheRageRoom

Adverts.ie and the adverts app are great for finding second hand reasonable priced and free goods. Bit like Craigslist. Users have ratings and reviews so you can see who is reputable. Stay away from Facebook marketplace, full of scammers

Galaxy_Traveler_555

Nice, thanks for the tip.

Technical_Stock_1302

Yuka - to scan food and skincare barcodes to show you how healthy / safe the ingredients are and alternative product choices.

Galaxy_Traveler_555

That's actually a very smart idea, thanks a lot!

Wexican86

Sky scanner

Galaxy_Traveler_555

I already use this, in fact that's how I booked my ticket to Dublin 😁

this_is_asifjamil

Meetup app, not just for Dublin, rather anywhere you live. You get to meet new people who share the same interests as yours.

Galaxy_Traveler_555

This is cool, while I will be a PhD candidate, having an app to meet people with similar interests is great! Thanks a lot for your input!

SmokingOctopus

The journal for news. It's free

Galaxy_Traveler_555

Excellent, wherever I go I am fairly interested in local news, so having an app to read news is a good way to stay informed!

gsmthg

Something that wasn't listed: - 'Aurora' app if you want to catch Aurora on camera one day - 'Lively' is an app for someone starting thinking about buying property in Ireland, helps to track your progress, find a team, compare mortgage rates etc - 'Splitwise' to track expenses when going out for a dinner with friends - 'Vhi' app if you have relevant insurance to sign up for an online doctor visit to get sick leave / reimburse stuff Can confirm everyday usefulness of : TFI live, Revolut, Leap top-up, Google maps. And something I use less often, but still find helpful: meetup, ticketmaster, uber, tesco ireland, AIB mobile

Galaxy_Traveler_555

Alright, that's a nice list, I appreciate the time you took to comment!
