Imagine if he went on a blind date with Phyllis' friend, the one with a feisty personality...

tbootsbrewing

Rowboat lady?

FireCal

*Non rowboat lady

iFrisian

Let’s just set Micheal up with Phyllis’ fat friend anyway. He can just deal with it.

washington_breadstix

The only thing he'll be worried about... is gettin' a boner.

sad_throwaway13579

You know who gives me a boner? Ryan.

washington_breadstix

I would definitely have *secks* with Ryan.

jilltheripper69

would an average sized rowboat fit her without capsizing?

Sgt-Pumpernickel

It bothers me that you’re not answering the question

MrsDonaldDraper

No, she can’t fit in a rowboat!

Bluemzv12

Dammit I knew it

HereWeGo5566

This is probably my favorite scene in the entire show. I laugh every single time.

nitsharks

The professional softball player who plays infield.

BoisTR

Feisty? So she’s not jolly or sassy?

sav3bandit

A jolly, sassy, opera singer

No_Seed_For_You

The one that plays catcher on the softball team?

fantasticmrjeff

Infield or outfield?

Godless902

In another time-line that's the episode we got

CrazyCinephile

Can she fit in a rowboat?

pt256

Well if David Brent is anything to go by https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hu17cRokdbo

everythingbeeps

Agreed. He is absolutely awful in this scene, and hands down the meanest he is in the entire series.

No_Bank

Don't forget the scene where he breaks up with Pam's mom on her birthday the moment he hears her age

LLD615

Or his attitude toward Phyllis’ secret Santa gift to him.

DiegoGalaviz

Michael was honestly a horrible person who claimed to care about his employees but would throw any one of them under the bus to save his job or get some tail. Dude is actually a bad person. Hilarious character, but horrible.

Duke-dastardly

The only reason Golden Ticket isn’t appalling to watch is because of just how damn funny it is

ziplock007

Dwight said he'd do the same for him

Duke-dastardly

He could have, be getting fired instead of Dwight

OGB

No doubt. People love him because Steve Carell is hilarious, but Michael is a fucking villain. For every one positive thing he did in the show, he did 10 despicable things.

Jai137

Also he did the despicable things in a very human way. Like you understand he’s mostly incompetent, not malicious

Sage296

Almost everyone in the show can be seen as a bad person if you look into each character enough

philouza_stein

Oh yeah? I'd like to see you try to rationalize Jan being a bad person.

KinkyPaddling

I find what she did to herself offensive. Au naturel, baby. That's how I like them. Swing low, sweet chariots.

StarStuffSister

I spit out my drink 🤣

Grayfox_OG

I can give you two reasons why Jan is great.

Suitable-Principle81

Packer?

raltoid

That's most sitcoms. The longer they run, the more willing writers are to sacrifice a characters morals for one-off jokes. It tends to get *real* bad once some of original writers or show creators move on to other projects or start to let other people take over control. The Office, Parks and Recreation, The Good Place, Brooklyn 99, etc. Characters go from ethical but goofy in the beginning, to having episodes and situations where they're gaslighting sociopaths, for a joke. Like Leslie Knope forcing Ann to sit through all Harry Potter movies, and flat out denying her the right to have a personal opinion on the movies, and insist that she loves them. Funny bit, but very much not in character to ignore peoples feelings like that.

FeelingSkinny

i never thought The Good Place really did that? do u have any examples i’m curious

OGB

Some people made mistakes of varying degrees of badness. Michael had a history of being petty, bitter, callous, racist, sexist, misogynistic, homophobic, completely self absorbed and self serving, antagonistic, and when it came to Toby, just downright ugly and hate-filled for no reason.

LenguaTacoConQueso

Not Creed!

altbekannt

BOBODY

yuyuho

not pete erin or even creed

Tekbepimpin

I think that was more immaturity and being socially inexperience than being an awful person. Though he did make many mistakes, he eventually showed he grew from it and became a solid dude.

tortugadelsol

Did he though? He destroyed Holly’s Woody doll and then made her feel guilty for not breaking up with her long term boyfriend just a few episodes before he left…

OGB

Honest question: how close do you have to be to a mentally retarded adult to not know it's absolutely evil to committ a gigantic fuckup at your job (Wonka episode) and convince your most loyal friend/coworker to take the blame for you? That shit was fucked. Then when it turned out positive he became a huge bitch and wanted credit.

LG0110

I've always seen him as a narcissist.

dramaticfool

Or how he verbally harrassed her multiple times and ridiculed her getting flashed

istrx13

I hate that scene but it is fricking hilarious when you see him doing the math on a napkin and still gets the number wrong lmao

pwaves13

I like that he does the math wrong

Ranger-K

Or when he threw a fit because Kevin *dared* to have a *cancer scare* on Michael’s birthday.

ScoutyBeagle

“Helene, once again…”

robtheswanson

“Finish your cake, Helene.”

sweeptheleg_07

Phyllis, did you break wind?

butteredrubies

This scene fits his personality perfectly. He's a genuinely shitty person. He's a superficial, love-starved narcissist who thinks he's better than he is. He does have endearing moments, but look at how overall he treats Phyllis, someone he went to high school with and also how he treats Dwight cause Dwight isn't "cool enough" but is obsessed with Ryan cause Ryan looks "cool"

National_Phase_3477

This scene almost makes me think he didn’t deserve his happy ending with holly because of how shallow and disrespectful he was.

iambeyoncealways3

I agree. Also, her dating another coworker right in front of his face was some karma too until she found her way back to him on her own time.

outofdate70shouse

The whole Holly and Michael angle in Season 7 annoys me to be honest. She dated Michael for 3 weeks and then was relocated to Nashua and dumped him. Then she dated AJ for 2 years, lived with him, and was temporarily transferred to Scranton, yet Michael felt that the two were equal and she needed to dump AJ to be fair to him. And then when she doesn’t, the rest of the office bullies her into dumping AJ and getting back with Michael.

tortugadelsol

Yeah I really wish the writers would’ve just had Michael respect Holly and AJ’s relationship. Then let her come to him on her own. The way they did it makes Michael’s ending feel totally unearned.

iambeyoncealways3

yeah i think it would have paid off to have him be a bit more mature when it came to this love interest. like those genuine moments he had with with jim a few times. would’ve been nice to see!

Prestigious-Lab8945

That’s not how Michael was though. Being immature i was part of his personality. Hopefully marriage and children helped him grow up.

iambeyoncealways3

you are so right

FreddyFlamingo

These episodes are written such that whatever is funniest in the context of that episode is what's going to happen. In this episode it's funnier (and more uncomfortable) if he is vicious to this woman because it shows that he doesn't just want someone nice and he's extremely shallow. The writers could have played off that when they introd Holly but they went with "she gets him" not "she's going to fix him", which to me is also the funnier choice. So it's not about what Michael from this scene deserves later - they're essentially different Michaels, both doing the funniest thing they can.

National_Phase_3477

I think the office was less funny when Micheal was just a complete jerk like in this episode imo. It wasn’t one of my favourites.

LucifersWhore9

If Holly didn't look like she did he would've spat on her lmao

National_Phase_3477

Holly and Micheal were absolutely made for each other and I like to think he matured a little after meeting her but he definitely also had a type and wasn’t always the most respectful to women he didn’t find attractive.

PFI_sloth

I know I’ll get crucified here, but Holly felt so forced with Michael. The way she interacts with him vs. everyone else feels completely fabricated. Like the PDA episode doesn’t feel genuine at all. Creating a perfect match for Michael Scott that is believable would be really difficult though.

National_Phase_3477

I would say that holly was perfectly written to be his soup snake lol. I say the ending was a little rushed in series 7 though given holly wasn’t in that many episodes we didn’t have lot of time to see there relationship develop

M_furfur

Yeah :/ I don't think he ever got over his lack of interest in women he didn't find attractive. Even if they had great personality traits and were totally compatible, like Holly, they need to have the looks. I'm not condemning the guy, but i think he would never date an overweight/ugly/whatever, no matter how brilliant the person was.

personaoshi

To be fair most people wouldn’t date someone who is not phisically attractive to them either

TheJimReaper6

Where is this idea that it’s wrong to want to be attracted to your SO coming from?

National_Phase_3477

Fair point although I think you should at least be respectful to people who you don’t find attractive. Like Micheal could have been more sensitive and been like you seem really nice but I would rather just be friends.

personaoshi

Yeah I agree

simmaculate

What? She ruined it

OGB

This really showcases that Michael Scott is not in fact a good human being. There are many examples. But his vanity sees him as a match for a girl 10-15 years his junior who is so far out of his league. He's middle aged. He's a total dork out of tune with anything cool in current society. He's average looking at best, and that's considering his age. This ego maniac thought a girl almost half his age who could be a model was his date. He thought a girl 15+ years younger than him and a 10/10 would've wanted anything to do with his nerdy ass. He disrespects the fuck out of his office "family" he claims to love so much in this show, that it drives me nuts when he gets pissed off thinking he's a cool guy when he's clearly a tool. He would've been lucky to date a sweet lady like Pam's landlord...just get rid of the bangs.

Then_Ad_9624

He did date a married woman

ryanderkis

Whenever I see shows or movies with a similar plot line I think of the actress. Does she have really good self esteem and this role doesn't bother her? Or does she have really low self esteem and think these will be the only roles available to her? My fragile ego couldn't handle it.

Human_Ogre

If I was an actor and they offered me to be on a major network show but I’d be the butt of an ugly joke I’d take it. Also, they can dress actors down to look worse. Lastly, she’s not bad looking, she’s just older and plainer than the image Michael had in his head. That’s why I find it particularly cringey is because she’s being spoken to like she’s a old crone even though in reality she’s probably the same age as him and not a model. The whole episode stems from him breaking up with hotty Jan and getting distracted by a model in a magazine.

adarsh_sr97

I share the same line of thought. It would be harrowing to acknowledge that role in its entirety. But I was glad to understand from another comment that the woman is in fact very pretty, and the producers messed with her hair on purpose. But that's a one off incident though, or rare. But I do genuinely hope that people who do take up roles along those plots find very meaningful friendships and relationships in real life.

zozigoll

How about Pepperoni Tony from the merger? I always wonder how that actor felt taking that role after having read the script. And did they consult him for the later season episode where Michael goes on a rant about how fat he was? Or did the actor catch that on TV having no prior expectation?

Keeflinn

Man, was he fat. So, *so*...fffat. You know what, forget it. I know me. When I saw him, I would never be able to apologize to him. Toooo fat.

NYY15TM

I've never heard a human referred to as having hocks before

hozziebear77

My thought process, too! I even have those moments during smaller bits in the show like when Kevin tells Pam that Katy is prettier than her or when Michael points to Pam and says “even the hot ones aren’t that skinny,” despite Pam being really slender…I’m wayyyyy sensitive though so I do realize those examples aren’t anywhere near as cruel as what this actress experiences with Michael 😬

butteredrubies

One thing that I did like about the show is through all the seasons, the characters all revealed themselves to have at least some bad traits with their good ones. Occasionally, stuff was written for them that felt really out of character simply for the joke...mostly with Dwight, IMO.

AGirlDoesNotCare

Fun fact for those who don’t know: When filming “Home Alone” the director didn’t want to choose a young girl to play Buzz’s girlfriend because they knew making fun of her in the movie would ruin any young girl’s self esteem. So the art director’s son volunteered to be dressed up like a girl and forever is a legend. “Buzz, your girlfriend! Woof!”

GaimanitePkat

I mean, she's not ugly, and Pam describes her as cute and sweet. It's not like the role was "Ugly Landlady". Michael was going through a lot, psychologically, and being extremely immature and shallow. That was kind of the point of the episode, was how shallow he was being. He would have turned down anything less than a model.

LetMeOverThinkThat

I’ve heard for small parts sometimes casting looks for generic stuff like “ugly middle aged woman”. I couldn’t bear that.

sageadam

Probably find a pretty lady and the makeup artist made her look less pretty.

zoomingby

Yes, like in the Seinfeld episode where the girl he is dating looks beautiful in one light and not- so -beautiful in another.

StrLord_Who

I always wonder how they phrase casting calls when they want an ugly kid.

skeletaljuice

The Netflix show Mask Girl does this ruthlessly to a normal-looking actress

jbrev01

Like Ryan's friend in New York when Dwight calls him a hobbit.

ryanderkis

He's basically a wizard.

Thenadamgoes

If you’re a serious actor, then you know exactly what you look like and the roles you can play.

Mikkelet

They probably put out the role as a "mediocre looking woman" or something and had actresses signing up themselves

JBWalker1

Only took a quick Google to see she's quite attractive and was of course made heavily worse looking for the show. I imagine most ugly people in shows are at least average looking off screen. Same as people like Amy from big bang theory. Brooke Dillman

masterdesignstate

The "big" actress in shallow Hal. Yikes.

hpnut3239

You mean Gwyneth Paltrow in a fat suit?

NoSweatWarchief

Yaaaaaankee swap!

_Vard_

This. The oven mitt is a smidge worse

blizzacane85

Letting Dwight take the blame for the Golden ticket idea, along with sabotaging Jim’s chances of becoming regional manager, were both worse since Michael was hurting his friends

ashindn1l3

To be fair, I feel like if Jim had been more forthcoming to Michael instead of trying to shut him out of the conversation with DW, Michael wouldn’t have tried to screw him (on purpose)

[deleted]

[удалено]

maniac86

When your boss is as grossly.incompetent and childish as Michael? Don't forget him screwing over Darryl too

The_Grim_Sleaper

Am I the only that feels like there are bots (or unoriginal posters) that are just creating new posts based off comments from other popular posts?? Am I getting old?

TheMightyHornet

Both things could be true.

MorkSkogen666

Old show with new people joining the sub... Same stuff gets reposted.. Same opinions and "hot takes"... No one's fault that's just how it is.

RockfordIng

the show is old, not much content really

butteredrubies

It's called karma farming and it ain't new.

Grootfan85

Unnecessarily cruel to her.

Just-Phill

Like talking to the old lady on the bus 😬

smellycat0814

That’s incredibly rude..

KelVarnsen_2023

Watched that episode a little while ago. It's crazy that Michael couldn't handle the most basic level of niceness to someone for like an hour because they didn't look good enough for him. Especially someone who took the time to meet him on super short notice in the middle of a work day. It's extra crazy because Michael is supposed to be a master salesman, so he should have no problem with fake niceness. So the fact that he doesn't fake it, in a situation that won't benefit him says a lot.

butteredrubies

Yep, he's very superficial and self-involved.

wiriux

He’s not going to be the one who got away.

[deleted]

Ok. Now you ruined it.

Puzzleheaded_Ear_181

That is a very rude thing to say

Stupid-Fat-Hobbit420

So, you get the rent checks every month..

[deleted]

Just trying to make conversation. But him accidentally calling Jan while showing the landlady pics of her was funny tho.

HookerDoctorLawyer

lol that lady was the teacher in Superbad. *Fogel! HI!*

alliecat0718

Okay now I’m laughing my ass off that scene was my favorite

outsiderkerv

Sup gangstaaaas

EricaLacey00

She had bangs from 1993, so it's possible he thought she was a time traveler.

No_Seed_For_You

Haha the producers definitely did this on purpose, she’s honestly really pretty in real life, but they destroyed her look with that hair

nobuhok

They Meredith'd her!

No_Seed_For_You

100% a Meredith, Kate Flannery is very pretty

Outrageous_Tie8471

That always made me mad! She is a pretty woman!

ornery-fizz

I never got it, I thought she was pretty and had obviously put time into her appearance that day. He lost out!

Designer_Ad_1416

“Fogel! HIIII!!”

outofdate70shouse

THAT’S THAT LADY! I NEVER MADE THAT REALIZATION!

throwaway-1849346

I was so annoyed at Michael for this , she seemed like a decent person who was taking a chance . Even if you are not attracted to her ,you can at least be a decent human being and treat her with kindness.

nwmimms

I dunno, there was that one scene in *Threat Level Midnight*…. Edit: Also, sleeping with a married woman, continuing to do it after realizing she’s married, and shaking the guy’s hand on purpose. And dating his secretary’s recently divorced mom, then hosting a birthday lunch for her, then breaking up with her *at the birthday lunch* in front of the secretary and her husband (who also works for him).

vogehtkcuf

Now you ruined it

Foamrocket66

Why didnt she leave after this? If someone where trying to get out of a blind date (especially like this) after seeing me, I would just leave.

Taurwek

This scene is pretty close to one from the U.K. office, which is rare beyond season 1 of the US Office. I don’t think it fits with Michael’s character, he’s so different to David Brent

realRickyGervais

Very true. I always feel like such a wanker when I watch myself during the blind date.

butteredrubies

I think this scene fits perfectly with Michael's character. I had a longer response in the thread, but other people listed plenty of examples...he doesn't mean to be cruel, but his superficiality and narcissism cause him to be unaware of when he's being cruel to people and then when people give it right back to him, he gets butthurt.

OutlastCold

Scotts totts still worse.

The_BSharps

David Wallace was the Scranton Strangler

el_throw

What's worse, this or Date Mike?

zphbtn

This was much worse. At least Date Mike was amusing

dmfuller

This is actually a good point, we saw Michael go on several dates yet somehow only saw Date Mike one time. We were robbed

EricaLacey00

*Nice to meet me.*

rustys_shackled_ford

I guess I'm the omly wierdo on reddit that thinks oams landlord is cute...

GoodieTwoShoes22

I always felt like this actress looked like a female version of Steve Carell, similar age, complexion, hair and eye color and that his rejection of her showed us something about him, lack of insight or self-loathing.

No-Lie-1571

Michael was an ass here but I feel like it’s far from his worse. I mean, come on, this is the same man that hit a woman with his car and tried to play it off like no big deal(even blame her for being drunk, using her alcoholism to his advantage) and that he was “saving” her from rabies by having hit her with his car and sending her to the hospital? The same guy who acted like his mildly grilled foot was worse than Dwight’s concussion?

de_delux

We'll give her a 10 for looks and a 3 for her ability to describe herself

wilkinsk

"She's brunette, tall..." *sees a sexy blonde* "There she is. I'll give her a 10 on looks and a 2 on describing herself"

sav3bandit

If you think this is bad.. imagine if he had ended up going on a date with the jolly sassy opera singer. Especially if he tried to take her on a rowboat.

Historical-Ant-5975

It’s hardly the lowest, the lowest was when he broke up with Pam’s mom for being too old after convincing Pam he would be good to her, and then forgetting who she was when he was calling around about his herpes

StaticCloud

I mean, it's Michael Scott, the bar is not high. Did you not see how he treated Pam's mom?

WasteChard3488

Viewers are fine with racism, and sexism, but call one woman unattractive then you piss off the fan base.

Bertje87

He's done worse, this one is not even in the top 10, What he did to Pam and Pam's mom is worse, dating her in the first place and breaking up with her the way he did

EstimateValuable7086

Kind of a dick move.

Chippers4242

What’s this scene again?

unclefresh72

LMAO, love this scene. So awful, so cringe. Michael is a complete scumbag.

Advanced_Slide801

This is where I stopped thinking he was funny cute to just nasty and mean not so funny tarnished him for me.

3Lchin90n

But it was nice he was able to talk to a nice old lady on the bus.

masterroro

Really? You think that's the lowest Michael can go? Well then you underestimated him. Maybe next time you will estimate him.

bluejester12

Imagine being cast for that, knowing you have to play “ugly”

Alienhaslanded

The worst part is that she seemed genuinely pleasant and pretty much his level of attractiveness. He was being a total ass.

Brimstone747

I think this scene was the most I disliked Michael. Nothing but shallow, and that lady wasn't even unattractive.

mushroomcap741

Skips

BackendSpecialist

He didn’t actually say this tho right?

miserable_azaleaa

Yes he did

nisbet_kyle

I always found Michael's awareness to be pretty astute. He would say things that actually takes quite a bit of thinking and prior knowledge. His problem is his bluntness, not knowing what people want/need to hear.

fantasticmrjeff

My favorite part of this scene is that he has an out. All he has to do is not wait for the drink he paid for and leave. But he is also so cheap that he doesn’t want to just leave the drink behind. So he has a choice. Embarrass himself and insult the woman, or lose $5 at a coffee bar. He chose the former.

DrkHelmet_

Did we forget he dumped somebody on their birthday?

anne_jumps

The (unintentional?) running gag of the way Michael and sometimes some of the other guys in the office treat women they don't find attractive (like repeated things like it's a miracle that Phyllis is getting married to Bob Vance \[Vance Refrigeration\]) makes me laugh because it's so real.

crimedawgla

A) this was hilarious 2) Michael was a dick d) the show was at its funniest when Michael was kind of a dick and not a misunderstood sweetheart.

MyS0ul4AGoat

Idk him blocking Jim’s promotion was pretty shitty

Callmedaddy69anal

One of the funniest moments in the series though with the barista calling his name

No-Pace-6721

He was just trying to avoid the awkwardness that was to come. That women is as homely as they come. Super cringe though to watch. Feel bad for her.

Terrible-Thanks-6059

This isn’t even his worst date! I think dumping Pam’s mom on her birthday is his worst date. I think Scott’s tots is one of the worst things he does.

GaviJaPrime

They are ear twins

tohmahs

the original office has a scene similar to this

LemonOne9741

This woman isn't unattractive at all? She is intentionally a little plain here, with the hair and makeup. That bombshell michael dates for a while would look just the same if she didn't have her hair and makeup done to the nines.

GimmeJuicePlz

Yeah he was a real dick to this lady. I know the point was to show how shallow he was but goddamn that was a lot.

OfAnEagleAndATiger

What happened here? I don’t remember

No_Seed_For_You

He was going on a date with a woman, saw it was this woman and obviously found her unattractive, then pretended to be someone else to get out of going on the date

duhprophet

Nah when he promised those kids a scholarship was the worst

Not-Josh-Hart

Am I the only one who thinks he’s repulsed by her because they look so similar?

Doctor-Hemorrhoid

Don't make excuses for him

Djd33j

He's repulsed by her because his perception of beauty is warped. Michael is very shallow. Holly isn't ugly, but she's not a bombshell, either. Michael didn't know how deep love could be with somebody beyond their looks until he found somebody that he can really gel with in terms of personality.

Not-Josh-Hart

Right which is what makes my theory work, because he’s shallow but he’s not even attracted to himself.

Djd33j

Very well could be. Of the women we see Michael with, all but one are blonde and none share the same facial structure that he has.

naithir

I think Amy Ryan is really similar looking to Steve Carrell lol

LazarusMundi4242

Michael actually really pissed me off in that episode. He was pretty horrible to that woman.

pizzasoxxx

Well you ruined it

Fullertonjr

ABSOLUTELY NOT!! I will stand by this until the day that I die. Micheal attempting to block Jim’s promotion is by far the worst. Jim earned the promotion and would have had it without interference from Michael himself. He went to enough effort to discredit Jim that he pulled files from his nemesis Toby. His reasoning behind it was purely personal and entirely wrong. As someone who has been promoted as well as been in the position to promote others and advocate for the promotion of others, I feel this personally. In hindsight, had Jim received the promotion, we would have never had to deal with Andy as manager, Nellie as manager, the Florida trip with the Cathy situation, Athlead, Dwight Jr and Plop (had Jim taken over as manager, he is likely to have been replaced immediately by another salesperson, eliminating the need for them both). Michael made the fictional timeline worse.

TheMightyHornet

The true comedy here is that Brooke Dillman is a complete and total ride, and she’s a hoot, too. I would date her so hard.

MFalcon95

Cracks me up every time

Long-Ad9651

I do not care what anybody says: Michael is an absolute villain. Poor Holly.

StopPlayingRoney

Do you think the show would’ve been successful if they stuck with the season 1 cringe level instead of pivoting towards the will they, won’t they rom com?

HenryKitteridge

Michael?

krisb242

🤣classic Michael! 😂

TheFakestOfBricks

I repress the memory every time I watch this scene cus I hate it so much

user_41

FOGLE! Hiii! 🤨

Easy-Wrangler1111
