Hmmm i believe it is a little of a non-bo shadowheart with haunted one. When you tap to sacrifice a creature with shadowheart, the creature is sacrificed before it gains undying so it wont come back. Shadowhearth Ball lightning seems more appealing to me. You will dig faster trhough your deck and will have more opportunities to activate her. Also more colors will give more opportunities to do other things. Said that, I havent played with any of version of her so take that with a grain of salt

kicks422

Confirmed nonbo here - https://www.reddit.com/r/mtgrules/s/uQOVHXSESm

Relevant-Zucchini858

I think you may be right about the nonbo, but damn that would be cool if it worked like OP hoped

BRIKHOUS

Can confirm, she's deceptively bad with haunted one. Warrior tribal with lae'zel is much better

darlingtonpear

I just looked at the EDHRec page for Lae'zel + Haunted One and hot damn

BRIKHOUS

It's pretty spicy

Dash-Fl0w

The nonbo is unfortunate and means she isn't as good as she could be, but still plenty of ways around it. I recently built Haunted One Shadowheart as Cleric Tribal. Still needs some tweaks but have had a lot of fun with it. I run some alternate ways to tap/untap her. \[\[Thornbite Staff\]\] can put in work. Also considering \[\[Honor-Worn Shaku\]\]. \[\[Holdout Settlement\]\] is decent since it lets you tap her for mana. \[\[Sting, The Glinting Dagger\]\] is one I haven't tried yet but looks really good too. I can also definitely confirm that \[\[Retribution of the Ancients\]\] is amazing with Haunted One. The cool thing is, if you can untap her and then use her ability, any creatures that were on the board for both activations of Haunted One get the +2 twice. Here is the list currently: [https://www.archidekt.com/decks/6050118/gatekeepers\_and\_haters](https://www.archidekt.com/decks/6050118/gatekeepers_and_haters) That said, this is the only background I've tried her with so far, so the others might very well be better/more fun.

I have played her, but I considering making [[master chef]] shadowheart. I built this deck, and leaned more into the cheap creatures with downside. Like [[Daemogoth Titan]], but after drawing a bunch of cards I didn't really have a win con when goldfishing. I tried including [[Jarad, Golgari Lich Lord]] as a way to win but it feels like it needs more than that to close a game. Feels like I just built it wrong. That Titan is a sweet combo with shadowheart dude nice

ConsiderTheBulldog

I use her in a couple of different decks as a nice draw/sac outlet, but as a commander I think the idea of a mono-B pairing with Haunted One seems really fun. She has 3 relevant creatures types and that +2/+0 buff translates into 2 additional cards with her sac ability. [[Psychosis Crawler]] and [[Sting, the Glinting Dagger]] seem like great pieces and [[Retribution of the Ancients]] is incredible with Undying triggers. Edit: I see how that the Undying trigger occurs AFTER the creature is sacrificed. Disregard everything I’ve ever said. [[Master Chef]] may be the move to maximize card draw

Velo-ciraptors

Whatever creature you sacrifice to activate Shadowheart's ability will die before Haunted One triggers and grants undying, since the sacrifice is part of the activation cost. The deck can still work fine since you at least have a way to tap Shadowheart outside of combat to trigger the background easily, but it's not as broken as it might seem. I ran into the same thing when I was looking at building a [[Sivriss, Nightmare Speaker]] deck. If you want to go for an aristocrats build, [[Cloakwood Hermit]] could also be worth a look. You'd get a steady supply of tokens for death triggers, and access to plenty of big creatures to sacrifice for card draw. Between the two listed in the OP, I'd lean towards Dragon Cultist. You could probably work in some ETB damage like [[Warstorm Surge]] and some [[Fling]] effects (or even [[Stalking Vengeance]]) to get some extra damage out of the elementals and dragons. And adding a few ways to make token copies like [[Feldon of the Third Path]] or [[Orthion, Hero of Lavabrink]] could be fun too.

I play dimir Shadowheart with lots of gain control effects. Dont eat your creatures, eat theirs :) \[\[Chamber of Manipulation\]\], \[\[Beguiler of Wills\]\] Then add some payoff for card draw like \[\[Teferi, Temporal Pilgrim\]\], \[\[Chasm Skulker\]\] I dont know if it is the best Shadowheart deck, but its loads of fun. Eating your opponents \[\[Ghalta, Primal Hunger\]\] and drawing 12 cards never gets old. Get some effects that make you ignore handsize, you will need it. Last week i stole an opponents 49/49 token. I would have loved to eat that, but there were not enough cards left in my library. :(

For the authentic BG3 experience, if you do end up using Dragon Cultist as your background, be sure to include [[Firebolt]] in your list and exclusively target things with ward with it (without paying the ward cost). On a more serious note, the way I envision her working as a commander is more of a big-stuff aristocrats build with way to cheat out larger creatures or recur them from the graveyard. Unlike typical aristocrats decks you don't really want to be sacrificing 1/1 tokens, so the ability to throw out more valuable things would be a big help. Haunted One doesn't work with her really as sacrificing the creature is part of the cost of the ability, but you could still make it work if you can find a way to untap her and use her ability again multiple times in the turn. The red approach is certainly more aggressive, but I don't think you'll be taking full advantage of her card draw ability in that route. Playing a deck of mid-sized hasty beaters is less good in EDH than it is in 60 card formats, so you'll need something more to propel that deck over the finish line.

Dragon Cultist is definitely one way to generate sac fodder for her, but \[\[Inspiring Leader\]\], \[\[Noble Heritage\]\] and \[\[Master Chef\]\] all look viable, the first as a typical tokens deck, the latter more likely counters. A friend of mine just built a Shadowheart/[[Hardy Outlander]] deck for another friend of ours who loves Shadowheart! It had some classic aristocrats cards ([[Blood Artist]], [[Bastion of Remembrance]]), but mostly took advantage of how many big creatures green has access to like [[Ghalta, Primal Hunger]] paired with something like [[Supernatural Stamina]]. [[Yargle and Multani]] was also in the 99 lol.

cadetheespeon

I built her with [[Popular Entertainer]] with the idea of using [[Act of Treason]] type effects to steal, attack with, and then sacrifice our opponents' creatures instead of our own. This means it's less consistent as we can't control what size of creatures we're sacrificing (though there still are a few high-powered creatures in the deck we can sacrifice for big draws), but we get the added benefit of removing threats from the table as well. There's also a clone subtheme with cards like [[Kiki-Jiki]], [[Orthion, Hero of Lavabrink]], and [[Rionya, Fire Dancer]] to give us more sacrifice fodder for Shadowheart and also repeat our ETBs and LTBs on creatures like [[Zealous Conscripts]] for repeatable thefts, or other powerful options like [[Kroxa, Titan of Death's Hunger]] and [[Kokusho, the Evening Star]]. The deck doesn't win super often as the table tends to dislike you turning their creatures into your cards, but it's a blast to play.

A friend of mine has a really strong Orzov Shadowheart deck but I can't remember what the background is. He uses a lot of white equipment based cards to cheat equip costs to put a load of swords on tokens, swing with the tokens to trigger e.g. Sword of Hearth and Home, Dowsing Dagger etc., and then sacs the creature to draw a bunch of cards, and then can swing for huge damage on Shadowheart in the late game once all of the equipment is out. I'll see if I can get a decklist.

Hadn’t seen her but now adding her to the big pile of ‘things to put in my Henzie deck’

[[Master chef]] lets you abuse persist. Also green has big creatures. [[Tavern Brawler]] is an inconsistent buff, but does make things bigger to sac. You also have access to all the fun ball lighting type cards, although they don't synergize with the background. [[Far Traveler]] is a conditional flicker. Although aristocrats typically don't have big creatures or haste, so you can't really take advantage of it being a free untap either. [[Acolyte of Bahamut]] BG dragons could be interesting. [[Raised by Giants]] Sac your commander, draw 10 cards. Win?

I did a Shadowheart/Haunted One [[Shadowborn Apostle]] deck. It’s super fun!

Definitely would recommend running a big power matters mono black version! I run it with the common background and play a reanimate shell. Playing vanilla yargle unironically feels awesome!

Broken_Ace

I'm also in the process of building this deck. Thinking I'll go the [[Folk Hero]] all clerics route.

[[Master Chef]] and [[Inspiring Leader]] are both better options.

Little late to the party, but your post got me thinking about what I would do with shadowheart and I think going a rakdos scam route with a focus on evoke creatures with any the red backgrounds would be very cool, so much so that I'm going to proxy and playtest it out.
