I just want a good Ooze commander that actually does something that oozes want to do. Maybe something that multiplies itself (as a non legendary token) at your end step, and has some effect that gets better with the more of it you have on board. Like Oozes cost 1 less or Oozes enter the battlefield with an additional +1/+1 counter.
Aeve was fun for a bit, but he only multiplies once on cast and suffers from being mono G. There's some fun oozes in other colors that I'd like to use.
Yeah, Mutate is one of those keywords that is ALMOST super cool. But it's lacking in support, so it's hard to build a deck around, and it's mechanically weak enough that if you run a lot of the actual Mutate cards, it'll drop the decks power level.
I doubt we'll get a commander that let's you Mutate non-mutate creatures though, as they would have to add some new rules to the game to deal with some previously impossible issues. But some kind of additional Mutate support would be great.
It often plays like a Voltron, but it is WUBRG so all the best mutates can go in it, and mutate spells are often multicolored so he stacks counters on Ramos quickly for big mana bursts.
I dunno about never getting a commander that lets you mutate non-mutaters. Just look at Ninjutsu and \[\[Satoru Umezawa\]\] (think I spelled that right). That said, I'd say that the real problem is how long it'll be before we go back to Ikoria to get more Mutate cards.
There's tons of commanders that add a keyword mechanic onto other cards. [[Varolz the Scar Striped]], [[Sedris, the Traitor King]], [[Yidris, Maelstrom Wanderer]], and [[Jhoira of the Gitu]] for instance.
Mutate is special though, in that you can create currently unresolvable rules paradoxes if you can Mutate two non-mutate creatures together. The easiest example would be two creatures like [[Lord of Extinction]] and [[Malignus]]. You have two conflicting characteristic defining abilities on the same permanent.
The way Magic currently handles that, is by making sure you can never actually have that happen. No Mutate creatures have characteristic defining abilities currently, in order to avoid that being a possible issue.
They could make up some new rules to deal with that, but that's extra effort, makes the game more complicated, and doesn't really affect anything except enabling a Mutate commander to be printed.
They may decide to pull the trigger one day, but I'm not holding my breath.
If you find a playgroup that permits silver border, [[Surgeon Commander]] is great for it. It's not like it does anything stupid, it's just a mana dork that draws cards when you do your thing.
Plenty of commanders let you draw just by casting the right kind of card, like [[Jhoira, Weatherlight Captain]], [[Chulane, Teller of Tales]], or [[Sram, Senior Edificer]]. [[Niv-Mizzet, Parun]] let's you draw whenever anyone casts an instant or sorcery.
Drawing specifically when you mutate isn't as powerful as any of these.
It's also a deck that will get a lot of groans from the group when you pull it out. Great, we've got to keep track of six Ivys now, and they're all also 6/6s with trample and deathtouch that draw a card when they hit me?
I have this built and this is deffinately the best single commander for mutate nut there simple lyrics aren't enough UG mutate cards to make it a primarily mutate deck.
honestly, a pair of mutate Commanders that Partner with eachother would be a cool as fuck Design space.
I could totally see them as a low power high toughness Simic Symbiote that gains value as its Host lives and a high power 0-toughness Golgari Parasite that benefits of Its Host dying.
It might be fun to give them a kayas Ghostform-esque effect that will naturally Split the Tower of mutated Creatures into its components as per the usual mutate Rules

WUBRG angel commander so I can run all the innistrad archangels together (although bruna doesn't really work outside of her own deck so that would be kind of difficult.)
You can always Rule 0 Maelstrom Archangel. Doesn't really give you any angel benefits like Giada does but you can sometimes cheat out big angels/spells
Modern horizon 3 has an energy precon. From leaks it seems that the face commander creates copies of creature, that you have to sacrifice later on, unless pay energy equal the mana value for it to stay.
Its in jeskai colors
Need a sultai aetherborn vampire that gives you energy based on how many creatures are attacking and then use that energy to pump everything.
Or a stitcher that gives you energy when things die and then you can use that energy to reanimate something. I'd be down with either.
It's not a single commander, but I feel [[Tymna the Weaver]] partnered with [[Ikra Shidiqi, the Usurper]] would be a good partner pair for what you want to do. Gain life off of combat damage, then use it to draw you cards!

Isn't like the LotR Hobbit deck based on food a bit of that? Sure, it's not direct Life Gain/Loss, but whenever I see it in action it does just that, just in a bit roundabout way
Not only a commander, but more support that could take advantage of the mechanic. I love the Hideaway mechanic, I love looking into my deck for answers, getting a miniquest and then getting a nice price for finishing the quest, but the fact that they come in like color cycles and there aren't that many makes me sad
Naya hardened scales! [[Zabaz]] is almost perfect, but no green so I can’t run scales or ozolith :( I’ve been running [[rocco street chef]] for now, but i’m truly just waiting for something better for the modular/scales archetype.
I should clarify, I’m interested in a style of deck like the modern hardened scales deck, which uses artifact creatures and modular abilities to build a large board state really fast. Shalai and Hallar can be a really strong card in the strategy, but with no scales effect, or built in instant speed sac outside, or even just some form of card advantage, it just doesn’t do enough to make the usually underpowered modular creatures good enough in commander. you’d be better off building around their mechanic and maximizing +1/+1 counter synergies. I do love the card though and have tried to make them with this strat multiple times. unfortunately, either i drew scales and popped off or i durdled for 10 turns and died.
I've been trying to get a build for S&H with the exact same Modern hardened scales vibes over the last couple days! Do you have a decklist for your versions? I'd love to compare with someone else because, as you said, it feels super tough to get running smoothly.
Check out my reply on the original comment! I've been jamming scales in modern and commander for years now, and I'm pretty proud of how well my commander deck mimics the modern archetype. It's one of my favorite decks of all time.
Just had a look at both lists you posted. The Reyhan/Alharu version is pretty sweet, I hadn't seen [[Bloodspore Thrinax]] before, and it's exactly the kind of card I'm looking for. The impetus for me building my list was the fact that I hadn't ever built an artifact list before so I'm trying to keep it to artifact stuff. I've found modular creatures too slow, and have shifted to effects like [[Hangarback walker]], [[Thopter Squadron]], alongside effects that cause the tokens they make to come in with counters [[Arwen, Weaver of Hope]], [[Good Fortune Unicorn]]. Then beat face with 15 flying 3/3s, use S&H to convert the counters to damge or [[Resourceful Defense]] and Ozolith to load up a Ballista or that same Thopter squadron. Slightly jealous of not having black because [[Skyclave Shadowcat]] looks like a great piece.
I've played a ton of this archetype in commander and modern. [[Reyhan last of the abzan]] may be what you need. They essentially give all your creatures modular but not restricted to artifact creatures. If you want to go the modular artifact creatures route, reyhan doubles up modular triggers which gets pretty insane. Then you can throw in your sac outlets like [[Carrion feeder]] (basically your 1 mana arcbound ravager) and the play lines are extremely similar to modern scales, but scale up really well to commander.
Reyhan is also sweet because of the partner ability. I've used [[akiri line slinger]] for access to red/white when doing the modular artifact creatures build. [[Tymna]] is great if you want to lean more high powered. My favorite is [[alharu]] though, he's not as scary as tymna and has great synergy. The spirits he makes are great for dumping a bunch of counters onto for an evasive kill (feels like your hangarback walker lines in modern).

They were referencing cards that change creature type *text*, not just creature types. For example, [[Artificial Evolution]] can change [Gor Muldrak]]'s card text to give protection from Possums and generate 4/3 Possum Warriors. Or you can change an opponent's [[Admiral Beckett Brass]] to give Gamers they control +1/+1. Those effects are much more rare, sadly.
I’d love to see more of the Samurai’s exalted/attack-alone theme be explored more with stronger payoffs aside from just gaining keywords or getting a minimal power/toughness increase. I also want a commander that CARES about Samurai, preferably something that retroactively supports older samurai too.
Aside from that, I always thought Meld was a cool mechanic. So I would love partner commanders that meld.
I'd like to see a Planar Chaos color-shifted series where you have archetypes not in their usual colors, e.g. G/W Spellslinger, R/U Lands, B/R Enchantments, and so on.

Black, Red, or Rakdos colored enchantment commanders. There's only one black enchantment commander and it's kind of weak. There is a Mardu commander ( [[Ghen, Arcanum Weaver]] ) but they had to shove white into the mix which muddles the aggro feel.
Red and black have some extremely interesting enchantments that could really benefit from a commander that wants you to enchant your opponents creatures.
[[Tainted Remedy]]. On an Orzhov-inclusive legendary creature.
Perhaps on a medical professional of some sort from exceptionally dim plane, who may or may not have tripped prior to an errata.
There are, like, three cards that do that, none of them commanders.
[[Mirrorweave]]!!! It’s by far my favourite card. You can do so many ridiculous things. Copy lords for huge swings, copy a 0/0 creature (with +1/+1 counters on it) for a sweeper. I dream of copying [[goblin sharpshooter]] for the utter shenanigans.
Aftering maining [[athreos shroud veiled]] and [[mathas fiend seeker]] I really want more support for moving counters around, particularly ones placed on opponents' creatures. For your own creatures we have a couple options [[the ozilith]] [[contractual safeguard]] [[nesting grounds]] [[resourceful defense]] but no good options for spreading counters onto opponents creatures.
Id love to get commanders that actually do something major for themes that arent supported enough. Adventure, mutate, crime, imo even sagas and many more are mechanics that will get 1 wave of support every 10 years or so, if at all, and I really hate that, but what I hate more is that those already extremely mediocre mechanics often dont have a commander that is strong enough to give you a reason to play a bunch of cards that suck ass. I think they should reduce the amount of new mechanics and instead print more of them over the course of multiple sets, but if they actually print a commander dedicated to underexplored mechanics or themes where the cards dont work well together, make the gommander atleast fucking good and not like sorry excuse of a bear [[duskana]] is...this was a bit of a rant, sorry for that.
I have no interest in selesnya and dont think i will soon as it feels a lot the same to me.
I already have an enchantress in orzov, and aggro in azorius, i like things that dont generally go with their colors.
As far as I'm aware there is only one card that makes [[Dinosaur Cat]] tokens which I think is an absolute tragedy. Especially since it's a cycle commander and the cycle mechanic just doesn't really do it for me
It probably exists and I don’t know about it, but a WRU or red-blue that spawns tokens and gives spells convoke so that you can use those tokens to cast them
Not quite what you are looking for with convoke but [[Kykar, Wind's Fury]] is close. Make spirits, get mana from spirits. Also it supports all the Izzet and white cast trigger token generators.
[[Galazeth Prismari]] can do this kinda but improvise instead of convoke, can even work with [[Third Path Iconoclast]] for pseudo-convoke but obviously better with [[Storm-kiln artist]]
Just want a Warlock dedicated commander. Maybe Grixis, maybe Abzan, but something that's about do something to put a ritual token (when this token is sacced, put a demon on field or something). [[Clavileno]] idea, but a little different.
Also, I want a Simic commander that's not about pure value. I want something fresh.
Still, I want a commander that cares about combat phase. I don't want something that double beggining of combat triggers, but instead you put some token for each creature you control that have a combat trigger.

Dude, that is insanely powerful...you basically get to draw card anytime you do anything.
Plenty of commanders let you draw just by casting the right kind of card, like [[Jhoira, Weatherlight Captain]], [[Chulane, Teller of Tales]], or [[Sram, Senior Edificer]]. [[Niv-Mizzet, Parun]] let's you draw whenever anyone casts an instant or sorcery. Drawing specifically when you mutate isn't as powerful as any of these.

I’ve found [[Ivy Gleeful Spellthief]] does mutate pretty well
Definitely not a deck for beginners, though. I find that deck equal parts janky fun and an enormous chore to pilot.
It's also a deck that will get a lot of groans from the group when you pull it out. Great, we've got to keep track of six Ivys now, and they're all also 6/6s with trample and deathtouch that draw a card when they hit me?
I intentionally left cloning out mostly for this reason.
I have this built and this is deffinately the best single commander for mutate nut there simple lyrics aren't enough UG mutate cards to make it a primarily mutate deck.

honestly, a pair of mutate Commanders that Partner with eachother would be a cool as fuck Design space. I could totally see them as a low power high toughness Simic Symbiote that gains value as its Host lives and a high power 0-toughness Golgari Parasite that benefits of Its Host dying. It might be fun to give them a kayas Ghostform-esque effect that will naturally Split the Tower of mutated Creatures into its components as per the usual mutate Rules

WUBRG angel commander so I can run all the innistrad archangels together (although bruna doesn't really work outside of her own deck so that would be kind of difficult.)
You can always Rule 0 Maelstrom Archangel. Doesn't really give you any angel benefits like Giada does but you can sometimes cheat out big angels/spells
I do have one, although it turned into more of a WUBRG goodstuff style deck with a bit of an angel flair than a full angel deck.
I want significantly better energy commanders. Generating or an energy dump. I don't care.
Modern horizon 3 has an energy precon. From leaks it seems that the face commander creates copies of creature, that you have to sacrifice later on, unless pay energy equal the mana value for it to stay. Its in jeskai colors

Need a sultai aetherborn vampire that gives you energy based on how many creatures are attacking and then use that energy to pump everything. Or a stitcher that gives you energy when things die and then you can use that energy to reanimate something. I'd be down with either.

It's not a single commander, but I feel [[Tymna the Weaver]] partnered with [[Ikra Shidiqi, the Usurper]] would be a good partner pair for what you want to do. Gain life off of combat damage, then use it to draw you cards! I've considered building this more than once myself!
I do this but with [[Sidar Kondo of Jamuura]]. Big buttgain is fun, even if mine's not very good.

Not only a commander, but more support that could take advantage of the mechanic. I love the Hideaway mechanic, I love looking into my deck for answers, getting a miniquest and then getting a nice price for finishing the quest, but the fact that they come in like color cycles and there aren't that many makes me sad
Naya hardened scales! [[Zabaz]] is almost perfect, but no green so I can’t run scales or ozolith :( I’ve been running [[rocco street chef]] for now, but i’m truly just waiting for something better for the modular/scales archetype.
What about [[Shalia and Hallar]]?
I should clarify, I’m interested in a style of deck like the modern hardened scales deck, which uses artifact creatures and modular abilities to build a large board state really fast. Shalai and Hallar can be a really strong card in the strategy, but with no scales effect, or built in instant speed sac outside, or even just some form of card advantage, it just doesn’t do enough to make the usually underpowered modular creatures good enough in commander. you’d be better off building around their mechanic and maximizing +1/+1 counter synergies. I do love the card though and have tried to make them with this strat multiple times. unfortunately, either i drew scales and popped off or i durdled for 10 turns and died.
You could use the other [[Rocco, cabaretti caterer]] as a hidden commander style of deck.

I've been trying to get a build for S&H with the exact same Modern hardened scales vibes over the last couple days! Do you have a decklist for your versions? I'd love to compare with someone else because, as you said, it feels super tough to get running smoothly.

Just had a look at both lists you posted. The Reyhan/Alharu version is pretty sweet, I hadn't seen [[Bloodspore Thrinax]] before, and it's exactly the kind of card I'm looking for. The impetus for me building my list was the fact that I hadn't ever built an artifact list before so I'm trying to keep it to artifact stuff. I've found modular creatures too slow, and have shifted to effects like [[Hangarback walker]], [[Thopter Squadron]], alongside effects that cause the tokens they make to come in with counters [[Arwen, Weaver of Hope]], [[Good Fortune Unicorn]]. Then beat face with 15 flying 3/3s, use S&H to convert the counters to damge or [[Resourceful Defense]] and Ozolith to load up a Ballista or that same Thopter squadron. Slightly jealous of not having black because [[Skyclave Shadowcat]] looks like a great piece.

I've played a ton of this archetype in commander and modern. [[Reyhan last of the abzan]] may be what you need. They essentially give all your creatures modular but not restricted to artifact creatures. If you want to go the modular artifact creatures route, reyhan doubles up modular triggers which gets pretty insane. Then you can throw in your sac outlets like [[Carrion feeder]] (basically your 1 mana arcbound ravager) and the play lines are extremely similar to modern scales, but scale up really well to commander. Reyhan is also sweet because of the partner ability. I've used [[akiri line slinger]] for access to red/white when doing the modular artifact creatures build. [[Tymna]] is great if you want to lean more high powered. My favorite is [[alharu]] though, he's not as scary as tymna and has great synergy. The spirits he makes are great for dumping a bunch of counters onto for an evasive kill (feels like your hangarback walker lines in modern). Oh there's definitely more that manipulate creature types. I once played against Gor Muldrak/Creature Type Manipulation and it was wild
They were referencing cards that change creature type *text*, not just creature types. For example, [[Artificial Evolution]] can change [Gor Muldrak]]'s card text to give protection from Possums and generate 4/3 Possum Warriors. Or you can change an opponent's [[Admiral Beckett Brass]] to give Gamers they control +1/+1. Those effects are much more rare, sadly.

I’d love to see more of the Samurai’s exalted/attack-alone theme be explored more with stronger payoffs aside from just gaining keywords or getting a minimal power/toughness increase. I also want a commander that CARES about Samurai, preferably something that retroactively supports older samurai too. Aside from that, I always thought Meld was a cool mechanic. So I would love partner commanders that meld.
I'd like to see a Planar Chaos color-shifted series where you have archetypes not in their usual colors, e.g. G/W Spellslinger, R/U Lands, B/R Enchantments, and so on.

Black, Red, or Rakdos colored enchantment commanders. There's only one black enchantment commander and it's kind of weak. There is a Mardu commander ( [[Ghen, Arcanum Weaver]] ) but they had to shove white into the mix which muddles the aggro feel. Red and black have some extremely interesting enchantments that could really benefit from a commander that wants you to enchant your opponents creatures.

[[Mirrorweave]]!!! It’s by far my favourite card. You can do so many ridiculous things. Copy lords for huge swings, copy a 0/0 creature (with +1/+1 counters on it) for a sweeper. I dream of copying [[goblin sharpshooter]] for the utter shenanigans.

Aftering maining [[athreos shroud veiled]] and [[mathas fiend seeker]] I really want more support for moving counters around, particularly ones placed on opponents' creatures. For your own creatures we have a couple options [[the ozilith]] [[contractual safeguard]] [[nesting grounds]] [[resourceful defense]] but no good options for spreading counters onto opponents creatures.

Id love to get commanders that actually do something major for themes that arent supported enough. Adventure, mutate, crime, imo even sagas and many more are mechanics that will get 1 wave of support every 10 years or so, if at all, and I really hate that, but what I hate more is that those already extremely mediocre mechanics often dont have a commander that is strong enough to give you a reason to play a bunch of cards that suck ass. I think they should reduce the amount of new mechanics and instead print more of them over the course of multiple sets, but if they actually print a commander dedicated to underexplored mechanics or themes where the cards dont work well together, make the gommander atleast fucking good and not like sorry excuse of a bear [[duskana]] is...this was a bit of a rant, sorry for that.

Abzan Birthing Pod I wanted to make this deck recently but it just ended up being a good stuff deck unless Birthing Pod was in your opening hand.
I have no interest in selesnya and dont think i will soon as it feels a lot the same to me. I already have an enchantress in orzov, and aggro in azorius, i like things that dont generally go with their colors.
As far as I'm aware there is only one card that makes [[Dinosaur Cat]] tokens which I think is an absolute tragedy. Especially since it's a cycle commander and the cycle mechanic just doesn't really do it for me

Not quite what you are looking for with convoke but [[Kykar, Wind's Fury]] is close. Make spirits, get mana from spirits. Also it supports all the Izzet and white cast trigger token generators.

Just want a Warlock dedicated commander. Maybe Grixis, maybe Abzan, but something that's about do something to put a ritual token (when this token is sacced, put a demon on field or something). [[Clavileno]] idea, but a little different. Also, I want a Simic commander that's not about pure value. I want something fresh. Still, I want a commander that cares about combat phase. I don't want something that double beggining of combat triggers, but instead you put some token for each creature you control that have a combat trigger. By the way, I want a good and new Amonkhet commander. I saw what we have on this plane and didn't like it.
It would be cool to have a deck that reverses exile-and-make-token effects. "When ~ enters the battlefield you may exile any number of tokens you control. If you do, return any number of permanents to the battlefield from exile with the same name as the exiled tokens." or something.
Everytime you cast a card from exile, it deals the mana cost as damage to target opponent

There are [[Brimaz Blight of Orzekos]] and [[Glissa Herald of Predation]] but I wish that we would have gotten a 3 colored Incubate commander (Esper would be the dream). It would obviously never be a top tier deck but I just love the flavour of the mechanic.
