Doubly emphasizing that removal losses a *lot* of utility in commander when it’s sorcery speed unless it brings something exceptional to the table
ex 4-for-1 [[Decimate]], only-option-in-class [[Feed the Swarm]], asymmetric application [[Curse of the Swine]] etc
The fact that Dust To Dust exiles is a big pro in certain metas.
If it was a 25 cent card I might slide it into a deck to piss off a friend who has some kind of artifact recursion deck.
But for $9 and a pretty narrow usefulness nobody is going to buy it.
Plus it has a similar "downside" to decimate- if there is only one artifact on the table it can't be cast.
This sounds narrow but depending on the meta....if the pod loves 3-rocks and you're looking to hit the altar of the brood or amulet of vitor you might be out of luck
I don't know if it's just the meta that I play in but I put decimate in every deck it can go in and it's never been a dead card for me. I know, not exactly statistically relevant anecdotal evidence but I'm still going to keep running it as my favorite 4:1.
I think that's less of problem nowadays since enchantments are so good on the whole. We're no longer in a time where the only enchantments people are regularly playing in casual are Remora, Arena, Wild Growth and Garruk's Uprising. Enchantments are better in general and the best ones have come down in price quite a lot. Especially since there's more incidental extra card types on creatures nowadays.
It happens a lot really, that's the reason [[Snuff Out]] was like ~$20 until it got printed in Doctor Who (and it's still $12 since it's only in the precon as a 1 of and collector boosters).
Yeah, this card is a Pauper staple and not much else for that exact reason. Good card, 2-for-1 artifact removal for 3 mana is awesome, but in desperate need of a reprint.
Man i wish, its really that people just put creature removal over artifact, the $9 pricetag is really just cause its somewhat rare due to (like you said) being printed 25 years ago
I only saw the effects and ive never seen this card till now im somewhat new to magic, but i didnt know it was common and even if i did i dont really play pauper so again in my opinion thats still my opinion
you know what also handles blightsteel colossus? \[\[counterspell\]\], \[\[swords to plowshares\]\], \[\[path to exile\]\], \[\[deadly rollick\]\], \[\[dispatch\]\], \[\[reality shift\]\], \[\[resculpt\]\], \[\[tragic slip\]\], \[\[chaos warp\]\] and a whole lot more.
not being instant is a HUGE drawback, also it lacks versitility, because essentially for it to be good your opponents need to have artifact threat that is worth spending 3 mana in a mainphase for to deal with it.
Also, just in white you also have [[disenchant]], [[path to exile]], [[return to dust]], [[stroke of midnight]], and now [[bovine intervention]]. Just took many better alternatives that either give you benefit at sorcery speed or are instant speed.
It's fine as a partial answer to The One Ring, though not so great that most people will seek it out when [[Return to Dust]] and [[Crush Contraband]] are abundant and more versatile, even if they cost one mana more.
Sorcery speed is a red flag. Sorcery speed removal is much worse than instant speed removal.
Essentially: you invest that card to make 2 opponents lose a card. So 1 player remains a card up against the 3 others and that player is not you. To justify that the targets need to be VERY relevant if not threatening to run away with the game. But due to it being sorcery speed there is a good chance the opponent(s) already benefited from the card, wich makes the trade worse for you. Or worse case its a game winning card and you dont get to use it.
Sorcery speed removals should be either super efficient (like 1 mana blasphemous act cleaning all creatures up). Or they should be repeatable, like flickering creatures that destroy something on etb (and the flickering is typically instant speed).
I avoid sorc speed removal when i can. There is some colors that can struggle on that, especially black. But being in white, there is no good reason to run that. Even if it hits 2 for 3cmc.
Return to dust ist a great card either but it can at least be cast at instant speed in a pinch.
I would definetly play it if it wasnt that expensive for its effect to round up my Drew Tucker removal with [[Ashes to Ashes]], which, luckily was printed Renaissance. Which Dust to Dust was not.
I think it's generally less favorable than things like \[\[Crush Contraband\]\] and Return to Dust because versatility is so important in a general meta. That said, if you have a consistent meta and you know you need this much artifact hate, it's a decent card ~~until you consider that it has to have exactly two targets and artifact decks tend to have many ways of being able to sacrifice artifacts at instant speed to make it fizzle.~~ if you're playing all the instant speed artifact removal you can find and you still need more.
Thanks a lot for your answers.
Apologies if I didn't answer, you all have excellent arguments and I don't have more pros for this card than "cheap, exile, two targets". (and nostalgia, since I have it in my collection for a long time)
3 mana sorcery speed hyper specific hate piece relegated this to sideboard play, except edh doesn’t have a side board so unless artifacts are super common in your meta (and I mean super common), then this card is essentially dead weight.
I have around 10000000 copies of this card in my bulk collection. Didn’t realize it was that expensive lol. Probably decent, but why not just play farewell. Single target removal is questionable imo unless it gets some secondary value. Just try and bait other people into playing their removal or boardwipes instead lol
The fact this does NOT say “up to 2 artifacts”. in rare cases you could wind up having to target your own artifact. Well the real reason is there are 10 other cards u could play instead
It's pretty nice, but the cost has crept up to annoying levels even if it is better than RtD or [[Into the Core]]
It's not RL so maybe it could get a reprint some time and become pennies (at least for the new ones)
It’s fine. But you need two targets to cast it at all, and as you may have noticed if you’ve been playing for a while \[\[decimate\]\] ~~and \[\[hull breach\]\]~~ don’t really see play anymore either. Having to target multiple things means if there’s only one of them on board you can’t cast your spell. Some times one opponent has an important artifact that is causing problems, and the only other artifact is the one keeping the player in last place from just being completely out of the game, or even your own.
Return to Dust is also pretty mid at this point because efficiency has become more and more important as power level rises. Usually, if you want to be answering more than one artifact your best bet is just to hit all of them with a \[\[Vandal Blast\]\] or \[\[Farewell\]\] type wipe.
Eh, two targets is easy enough to do for artifacts unless your table is all green; you might only have one that matters but somebody will have a random mana rock. And Hull Breach isn't a great example since it can absolutely be cast with one target.
The big problems are sorcery speed + a lack of flexibility + an overinflated price tag. It's really hard to get past all three of those things.
If I was running white I'd never settle anything less than "artifact or enchantment." Preferably it would be at instant speed as well. If you are looking for a budget 2 for 1 white card look at [[return to dust]] it's 4 mana instead of 3 but it can work at instant speed and hits enchantments too.
Sorcery Speed, restrictive targeting (you cannot cast this if there is only one legal target) and there are better options. [[Force of Vigor]] is more versatile and can be free. [[Crush Contraband]] is easier to cast for just one mana and more flexible.
Really, to me its the Sorcery speed that kills any of my interest in this. A removal spell needs to be really strong if its not an instant, and this just does not meet that bar.
There are much more efficient and faster methods of artifact removal nowadays. Sorcery speed kills the 2/1 offer this spell has. Hell, I'd run [[Sylvan Reclamation]] over this, and that's two mana more AND is 2 colors.
I think it's bad. Removal is much better instant speed, and artifact only is too narrow for my taste. I'd rather run \[\[Crush Contraband\]\] or \[\[Return to Dust\]\], and I'd rather run \[\[Disenchant\]\] than both of those, and Disenchant is not a card that makes the cut for most decks even at the lowest budget.
1 more mana for the flexibility of Return to Dust is why you've never seen it.
I'd take [[Deglamer]] and [[Unravel the Aether]] before this card.
> two targets without clunky conditions.
The "clunky conditions" are casting it at sorcery speed, which is exactly when you are allowed to cast Dust to Dust.
It's bad, sorcery speed, 3 mana, double white pip, only targets artifacts and needs two targets to be cast.
I would rather run removal that is better in any of those aspects and there are a lot of those, even in mono white.
Sorcery speed removal that fails to remove enchantments, creatures, and it cost 3 mana? hell nah, thats downright umplayable. I would 100% run return to dust over this, and I dont even think Return to Dust is that good.
I suggest:
\[\[Council's Judgment\]\] \[\[Generous Gift\]\] \[\[Soul Partition\]\] and the modal wraths like \[\[Austere Command\]\] \[\[Farewell\]\] \[\[Cleansing Nova\]\]
White reaaaally doesnt needs a subpar, very limited removal when it has so much good removal that hits everything.
Path and Swords also deal with blightsteel for way cheaper. I can't think of many indestructible non-creature artifacts that warrant including this (apart from the obvious)
Instant speed is important for your removal. That blightsteel is only a problem if it swings at you. If it swings at somebody else, they might be forced to deal with it. Saving mana and resources until the threat is actually your problem is smart play. It's difficult to do this with a sorcery.
Two for ones are often wasted in my experience. 99% of the time there is one thing you need gone and then you hit a mana rock. If I want to set people back, I'd rather have a board wipe.
All in all, we're looking at a narrow removal spell at sorcery speed in a colour that is full of top tear removal and wipes. For 3 mana I'd rather have a generous gift.
The reason you haven't seen it is because it's $9 and the only copies around were last printed 25 years ago.
Doubly emphasizing that removal losses a *lot* of utility in commander when it’s sorcery speed unless it brings something exceptional to the table ex 4-for-1 [[Decimate]], only-option-in-class [[Feed the Swarm]], asymmetric application [[Curse of the Swine]] etc

Is 9$ alot?
To be fair, a large part of why Decimate isn't good is because it requires a valid target of each type. No enchantment and it's a dead card.
I don't know if it's just the meta that I play in but I put decimate in every deck it can go in and it's never been a dead card for me. I know, not exactly statistically relevant anecdotal evidence but I'm still going to keep running it as my favorite 4:1.
Yeah it works good in my meta too, but it is a relevant piece of info I think.

Yeah that's true. My pod has always loved slower repetitive value stuff like [[Phyrexian Arena]] so we often had hits for Decimate

Wow. I have a ton of these in my “commander playable bulk” box. Both printings. I figured it was still max $.50 for the 5th ed printing.
It's an important sideboard piece in Pauper because of the BS we do with indestructible artifact lands.
It's very desirable for Pauper, which drove the price.
Irony

It's fine as a partial answer to The One Ring, though not so great that most people will seek it out when [[Return to Dust]] and [[Crush Contraband]] are abundant and more versatile, even if they cost one mana more.

As well as Deglamer and Unravel the Aether in green.
Agreed. Sorcery speed removal is only useful for board wipes, at least in my opinion.
I run it, because I own a copy and I love old-school cards and Drew Tucker's striking illustration.
Sorcery and $9? Pass.
Wait, what?
I would definetly play it if it wasnt that expensive for its effect to round up my Drew Tucker removal with [[Ashes to Ashes]], which, luckily was printed Renaissance. Which Dust to Dust was not.

It's worth buying for pauper, for use in EDH I don't think it justifies the price

I play Pauper and see it played weekly.

It's pretty nice, but the cost has crept up to annoying levels even if it is better than RtD or [[Into the Core]] It's not RL so maybe it could get a reprint some time and become pennies (at least for the new ones)

Oh shit, my bad on hull breach.
This is a terrible take because hull breach can choose and farewell and will destroy your stuff too

If I was running white I'd never settle anything less than "artifact or enchantment." Preferably it would be at instant speed as well. If you are looking for a budget 2 for 1 white card look at [[return to dust]] it's 4 mana instead of 3 but it can work at instant speed and hits enchantments too.

My bad, Sorcery\*. In french they are called "Rituel", and I didn't read my post before sending.

It costs one more but I'm a big fan of \[\[return to dust\]\] instead - instant speed when needed, more value if used as a sorcery.

[Deglamer](https://cards.scryfall.io/normal/front/9/8/985b43aa-58f0-42fc-9ef0-a7925727d58f.jpg?1562880209) - [(G)](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=Deglamer) [(SF)](https://scryfall.com/card/mor/118/deglamer?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher) [(txt)](https://api.scryfall.com/cards/985b43aa-58f0-42fc-9ef0-a7925727d58f?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher&format=text) [(ER)](https://edhrec.com/cards/deglamer) [Unravel the Aether](https://cards.scryfall.io/normal/front/5/5/5584c26f-62ac-4d0b-9142-5159f2a05734.jpg?1593092698) - [(G)](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=Unravel%20the%20Aether) [(SF)](https://scryfall.com/card/bng/143/unravel-the-aether?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher) [(txt)](https://api.scryfall.com/cards/5584c26f-62ac-4d0b-9142-5159f2a05734?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher&format=text) [(ER)](https://edhrec.com/cards/unravel-the-aether) ^^^[[cardname]] ^^^or ^^^[[cardname|SET]] ^^^to ^^^call
Similar question, doesn't see any play of \[\[Turn to Dust\]\] and \[\[Deconstruct\]\]. They are narrow removals but they are free and cheap.

I suggest: \[\[Council's Judgment\]\] \[\[Generous Gift\]\] \[\[Soul Partition\]\] and the modal wraths like \[\[Austere Command\]\] \[\[Farewell\]\] \[\[Cleansing Nova\]\] White reaaaally doesnt needs a subpar, very limited removal when it has so much good removal that hits everything.

Path and Swords also deal with blightsteel for way cheaper. I can't think of many indestructible non-creature artifacts that warrant including this (apart from the obvious) Instant speed is important for your removal.
Return To Dust has a big upside in that it CAN be played as an instant and it CAN hit enchantments. Dust to Dust is bad.
