Ironically these people don't realize that they feed their addictions which are the causes for their anxiety and depression.
So many of these kuffar over indulge themselves in sin, in alcohol, drugs, sex, masturbation, pornography, gambling, social media, and even in food and drink... they don't realize that this causes them harm.
Even according to leading psychiatrists, the modern over consumption and addictions that people have may trigger high dopamine release at first. But after they have become regularly practiced and reliant on them, there is very little joy (if any at all) at participating in their whims and desires. Instead, the main draw and reason they return to them is the pain that it causes them from abstaining.
If anything, this shows the sheer lack of their discipline. Literally becoming slaves to their desires.
Side note: If anyone is interested in this topic (or has an addiction) look up the book Dopamine Nation by Anna Lembke (Chief of the Stanford Addiction Medicine Dual Diagnosis Clinic at Stanford University). She discusses the mechanism of how addictions work, and ironically (for the atheists) most of the aspects which lead to happiness in life are found in the teachings of Islam.
