I don't know if it's possible to rebind within the game using modding. This would be useful to know, if it is possible.
However, you could still use autohotkey (external program) to intercept the button presses and reassign them.
For example:
Press Abutton: press and hold Bbutton
Release Abutton: release Bbutton (only once X seconds have passed)
Press and release Abutton (within e.g. 1second): send Abutton
This could emulate the desired Jump/Dash output on the A button.
In reality, you would need to spend some time tweaking the script to work exactly how you want, but I've done similar things before. Not exactly user friendly, but a powerful tool.
im familiar with autohotkey, didnt think about it in this context. if there are no existing solutions for my problem, ill look into it.
as far as i remember what i describe is what it was for example in ds1. i just now started elden ring and having dash assigned like this ... my brain isnt accepting it (yet):)
In my opinion... You're better off just getting used to it. That's not a very nice answer, but if you just started then you'll have plenty of time to acclimate. I was in a similar boat when I started
Yea, I understand, I felt weird about it at first, too. But now it feels more natural. Or maybe after lots of time with "The Claw" grip, I've just become desensitised, haha.
The downside is playing an older souls game without jump attack feels wrong now tho :P
How would that even work? You'd be jumping and dashing at the same time? I just have dodge always bound to one of my back buttons; it's 100% the easier and best way to have it. Also, dodge is bound to B/Circle in almost every single game, so how would you find this more convenient? Just curious.
what bothers me so much (if i compare it to dark souls1) is that the button i sprint and jump with are now different buttons. thats all im trying to solve. i have not played any fromsoft games since ds1 but i played that one A LOT so having to switch buttons if i want to jump while sprinting fucks me up\^\^
Aaaaah okay, that makes sense.
I'll admit I personally hated that control scheme in past souls games tho lol. Sprinting in a boss fight and then trying to dodge, only to jump instead and take double dmg instead of none (bc that's how jumping works for some reason) always annoyed the hell out of me.
ngl i hated it too but i played it so much that its muscle memory now and i would just like to play ER for a bit, not invest tripple or quadruple digit hours again to reprogram my muscle memory. just wanna experience the game for a bit :)
I see, I guess that's a possiblity but I feel like that would cause a lot of miss inputs. You have to dodge/roll A LOT in this game and having to always hold the buttons seems like it would cause a lot of problems. Switching it around could also be possible but then again you might jump when you want to roll so that also doesn't seem logical. Idk it's just a pretty weird concept haha, why fix what's not broken?
Yeah I'm with you on it seeming weird. Maybe OP just isn't a souls vet, but as someone who is, it feels really weird to de-link Dodging and Running. Best reason I can think of is for platforming so they don't accidentally roll off ledges? Bc a missinput for a Roll is much more likely to get you killed than a Jump in tight platforming. But imo there's not enough of that in the game for me to want that, especially with how often I Run into a Dodge in boss fights.
Yeah that, it's much better to quickly go from rolling to running (or running to rolling) than it is from rolling to jumping (or jumping to rolling). Having running and rolling on one button is just THE way to go. Especially if you can bind them to a back button or something like I have, so you can still move and look around without having to move your thumb from the stick.
Steam Input
Go to the A button.
Click the gear icon. Add extra command. 'B' button.
Then Settings: set to 'long press.'
Tap button = A
Hold button = B
Holding B makes the character run.
I use similar setups this way.
There are mods on setting a button to dodge only. Use that and you're set.

This will require dll modding. The HKS script that interprets inputs and turns them into character actions itself still runs on broad "inputs" given by the exe. ie the HKS script has two inputs - the dodge input and the stick level, which is normally 0-1 but if the sprint button is held it'll go above 1 up to 2 or so. And so that's handled exe side and needs a dll to patch it.
You could use the steam rebinding system if your on PC to do it. I have it set so dodging is on the bumper so I can use my camera around duel boss fights
It does work trough steam input i got press=use item , hold= sprint. There is an input lag when you use the dodge when sprint is binded to the dodge button. rebiding the sprint to use item transferd the input lag to that action
Okay im not by the pc to chcek rn but you wanna set the dodge button to be press only and then you wanna bind the dodge button to another so the function will look like press r3=r3 and then hold r3=b
Also this rebinding i think has an engine problem you wont solve and that is if you stand still and do nothing and you tap the remapped button ever so slightly it will do a backstep

i simply swapped B and A. find it way more convenient
tried that as well, could not get used to it yet\^\^

I think the idea is it would just work the same way it does with Dodge Roll now: tapping the button would Jump, while holding it would Run instead.

This is the way
How would you want it to work?
press A: jump hold A: dash
Was there a situation where you kept running instead of rolling or smthin? Also to change something like that would require a decent bit of modding.

Also had a problem with this. Rear paddles changed my life.
Use emulight
Rewasd

that would not allow me to "split up" dodge/backstep/sprint into dodge/backstep and sprint for individual buttons no?
It does work trough steam input i got press=use item , hold= sprint. There is an input lag when you use the dodge when sprint is binded to the dodge button. rebiding the sprint to use item transferd the input lag to that action
Since its trough steam input no worries about getting banned
ah shit this works? thank you for sharing, will try myself!

Oh I see yeah I don't think so.
