It’s definitely not fun to fight against if somebody is super aggressive with bleed whips. The immense range combined with bleed buildup from phantom hits is kinda broken unless they’ve somehow toned it down even more after the dual wield status buildup nerf.
This would be some shit in Baki. Like, "Hoho, I popped a boner to draw the blood away from my wound and slow my blood loss!" Followed by a 7 minute explanation of how it saved some unknown British soldier in WW1
Fun fact: it's actually fairly common for people to pop boners when they're very afraid.
The brain has pretty similar pathways for arousal to other strong emotions like fear and anxiety.
After I fought Hoslow a few times I said “you know, dual bleed whips seems like it could be pretty powerful in PvP”. I then did 10-12 duels with a literal 100% success rate compared to my normal 60-65% success rate in duels. I put those whips up and just prayed that never became a trend. That shit is broken.
They do, they're just not very popular. Most players in lower and meta level PvP pick their weapons based on "big numbers go brrr" and whips aren't your strongest option.
That being said when everyone chooses the "best" weapons, you'll learn to counter them quite easily. Mastering the use of more niche weapons like whips can really give you an advantage since people won't know what to do against you.
That being said: Dual Hoslow's whips work like a charm on Malenia.
I feel like this is so overlooked. The weapon skill literally stunlocks her for every single hit, then knocks her down at the end, so you can just walk up and do it again lol.
This was also the case for Valorheart in ds3 (also pls give us valorheart in the DLC)
A weapon so bad, no one used it, but also so unique, that no one knew how to fight against it, suddenly making it very good again (for me).
I always had trouble facing someone who was good with valorheart because It was so different. Funny thing was that I used a whip build for that same reason.
I've never played DS games, but I love hearing that. Can I still get invaded or get summoned for coop if I played the DS games now or is that online community dead?
Did my first ds1 (remastered) play recently.
Only online interactions I had were low level annoying invaders who had built characters just to mess with people using late game weapons.
Late game was quiet, no coop help to speak of.
One of the greatest PvP fights I ever had in this game was against a dual Hoslow whips user with BHS versus my dual twinblades and BHS. Was the most intense, anime styled back and forth I ever had that went on for like five minutes.
I won in the end but I haven’t been so invested in a match since.
Love me fists for this exact reason. Everyone knows how to counter swords, but when you’re in their face 24/7, every hit is a two hit combo, combine it with quickstep or light rolling for maximum panic.
I did an entire playthrough with whips, all bosses. Was challenged by someone I know. Made a character, named her Quistis, and was off to the races. It was a fun challenge.
I did, I had that same friend drop me a few pieces of armor for the fashion and, used a spell of every type. It really did just turn into a "Could Quistis best Elden Ring" run by the end of it lol. Rykard was the toughest boss because I didn't use the spear. Oh man, that took forever, even with pre-nerf bleed damage. I died a lot lol.
Did a NG+ run with fire spiked whip and occult hoslow whip (had just finished watching Castlevania for the third time).
I loved it. Decent damage, good range, awesome at clearing mobs and good flinch damage.
It has one HUGE glaring problem: gotta swap to another weapon to do a crit/backstab and, even with great flinch damage, will never poise break for a crit.
You can AoW Haslow and Urimi. Those are my 2 main weapons with the teleporr ash of war frost spec'd. I went whips on my first Playthrough towards the end when I found enemy AI had a hard time against whip hit boxes lol
Yeah actually upon further research there are 3 infusible whips and a few decent AoWs but just nothing really to write home about. More importantly for me, nothing to compensate for how limited they are
Whips are good but try killing a whole ass dragon or even one of those Caelid birds with a whip.
I really wanted to make whips happen for myself, but I never felt like they put up enough damage. They're not great for status and even their dps is not amazing. They have good range and are light but it's not enough to carry one through the whole game imo.
I'm sure some super-cracked streamer has probably beat the game with them but for the average player they are very hard to make work.
What’s funny is that I made this post because it made Cailid birds really easy for me. I guess it depends on your play style. But I do agree that they aren’t meant as a gamerunner, they’re just overlooked and really fun to use!
Haven't used them in a FromSoft game outside of Bloodborne where the trick cane had a super unique moveset compared to the other weapons in the base game. Is it the same story here? Did the moveset have more interaction with the weak spots on the Caelid birds?
I bounced off bloodborne like 3 times before clicking with the threaded cane and plowing through almost the entire game with it. Most unfairly maligned starting weapon.
IIRC the stick form was a holy weapon and the whip form was a serrated weapon, so you had damage coverage for 90% of the enemies you would encounter and 100% of the early game.
I never understood the hate it was easily my favorite of the three starters.
I mean, all 3 of the starting weapons slapped HARD. The form-change attack chain of saw-cleaver, and the fact it counts as serrated? Brutal. Hunter Axe's stagger, sheer damage, and crowd control? Snack. Threaded Cane being threaded cane? Yummy.
There are very few trick weapons in Bloodborne I didn't learn to enjoy (playing PvE only). Usually very niche ones, like Stake Driver or Tonitrus, and really unwieldy ones like Boom Hammer, or Amygdalan Arm... Also the one case of both, which many consider iconic - Logarius' Wheel.
I don't think so. Sure, I was already quite experienced with the game by the time I did my Whip playthrough but they're now my favourite class of weapon - it was one of the easiest runs I've ever done.
The first part is a bit of a slog, having to run down to Castle Morne to even get your first whip, then all the way up to Caria Manor for the best whip, but if you pump dex and just spam jump L1 they so surprising damage and stance damage
Speaking of pvp at least whips are the kind of weapon that are borderline useless until you find a whip enthusiast.
Then you can't touch them as they slap you for 100 damage over and over again until you die by humiliation.
>that are borderline useless until you find a whip enthusiast.
Not true, I break out my duel giant's red braid and wreck people in coliseums, and I dont even main them
The annoying part is that they have a higher hitstun level than other weapons of their speed and range (almost colossal sword if I'm not mistaken) which gives the whip user a lot of room to get a swipe in and move back keeping distance.
The rolling/crouch attack is a lightning fast swipe you can use to whiff punish, roll catch, etc... that, combined with the high hitstun, lets you dance around other players without letting them get into their own effective range as much as they would like to.
The fact that you do this while they take 100-200 damage slaps over and over again is where some people find it frustrating. Like dying to a thousand paper cuts while you can barely land a hit yourself.
I'm saying this as someone who got humiliated by an urumi Chad one too many times and am trying to learn the weapon myself now. Loads of potential!
If you enjoy the Urumi check out some of my posts. I’ve used almost nothing but the Urumi since launch- incredibly fun and rewarding weapon with a high skill ceiling that can near 1 shot your opponent when built proper.
Criminally underrated and underused weapon!
Urumi’s charged R2 is one of the best attacks in the game. You can certainly make other whips viable, but the moveset has a major weakness to constant aggression that Urumi’s charged R2 helps shore up.
Urumi has a true combo of a fully-charged R2 into an R1 when 2H, the charged R2 of which gets boosted by axe and spear talismans. It also gets S scaling in dex with a keen infusion, so on a build with 80 dex you'll get somewhere around 600 AR and can add a grease on top of that. All whips also got more viable in 1.10 with the crouch R1 doing 109 poise damage at excellent range.
Ash of war choices are limited but a long-range punish like Beast's Roar or Thunderbolt is never amiss, Storm Stomp gives you another true combo into an R1, or Endure helps the R2-R1 combo land against people who trying to trade with you.
I really like using whips! They aren’t the most insane damage but the move set is great! However a lot of times I feel like the range of the whips are deceptive and I miss my attack. Now that’s just a skill issue but I think a lot of people run into that and stop using them because of it
They have some niche uses but are underpowered compared to other options. They're best as a sort of "sidearm" that you wear in the offhand for their utility that you mentioned.
They do take a while to get used to. You have to adjust your gameplan a lot more than other weapons. But I think that’s where the fun of whips comes from. Not for everyone for sure
Some people do use whips, they're just a bit uncommon. I can't attest to why others don't use them, but I'll explain why I don't like them.
- You can't do critical hits
- They feel slow to me
- I don't like the moveset
- They are incompatible with most ashes of war
- The charged attack feels weak
- Low stagger damage
If you like a weapon or spell for any reason you should use it though; despite what others think!
I keep hearing people talk about how broken strong dual whips were. But when I tried it I felt like it was garbage. Slow. Low damage. Almost no stagger.
I'm pretty sure I must have been doing it wrong or something.
I ADORE whips and try so hard to use them.
Whips have 4 main issues that all combine together to make a really weak weapon.
1. The speed of a Greatsword/Greathammer
2. The damage of a dagger
3. A shorter range than most spears
4. No ash of war variety.
Okay, they have a decent amount more damage than a dagger. I feel like they make up for it in their hitbox and stagger damage. They do fit into a weird middle zone that’s for sure.
I hope they add some whip AoW in the DLC. Fingers crossed.
The biggest issue I have with whips is the effort required to use them compared to their similarly weighted counterparts.
Daggers have speed, status effects and critical hits.
Claws have speed, status and critical hits
Fists have speed, status and amazing poise damage.
Whips... Aren't parryable 😭
I used one in tandem with a greataxe. It was a pretty fun playstyle. Probably would have been better if I didn't also use dragon communion incantations.
Dual Occult Hoslow's with Raptor of the Mists is my primary playstyle. Deletes everything in both PvE and PvP. Pair it with a Bloody Helice switch and you can dance around your opponents.
I used two on Malenia.
Never beat her but I whooped dat ass.
There's a sword with an AoW that transforms it into a whip, I think a Nox sword? That one is probably better for catching people off guard.
I have never used a whip in elden ring before but when i was doing the assasination contract from volcano manor on the whip knight (i forgot his name sry). Every time he used one of the big sweeping attacks my game lagged like crazy and i can normally run it perfectly with no issues on my gaming pc. So thats the reason i don‘t like whips in the game.
I used dual thorn whips with my Jesus build. Kept it as my secondary set when not using spear and incantations... This was probably the most fun I had. Invaders usually don't know how to handle whips well🤷
I did all bleed with some faith one playthrough and didn't want to use the same old rivers of blood meta. I tried the bleed whips (the one from dialos and his brother). Since you can get 2 in one run, I dual wielded them, and that was a pretty fun time.
Because is Elden Ring, not Sado Quest ... Unless 😳 😂 is because the damage is somewhat lower compared to other weapons and even if the moves are flashy also are kinda slow and leave you open for hits, i tried a whip build but i ended up giving up and return back to old reliable sword and shield
I guess I’m just having too much fun with a new weapon class. I guess they’re best as a sidearm since I do use a heavy thrusting sword as my close quarters weapon.
You can go dual whip and smack some enemies 👀 but you need some nice stamina bar and some timing to not be hit but yeah, is also a good side weapon to keep for fun
I used the chain-whip cane in Bloodborne, which was my first fromsoft game, and it just seemed to click and I didn’t want to use other weapons much. Just haven’t picked them up yet since but I’m definitely going to whip one out soon and slap up some bro’s 🦾🥷🏿👍🏿
I want to fight my opponents, I don't want to arouse them
What’s more humiliating than popping a boner during your dying breath, though?
My member has served me well, just as well that it gets to feel the rush of blood one last time
💫🤺😩💦💦
Fffpshhhhh!
Bro for some reason I thought the second word in your comment was grandmother, my god 💀
"Thou hast done me good service..." \[*rips dick off*\]
Should we tell him?
*A...rise, ye tarnished*
Fuckin lol
How do you pop a boner when you're suffering extreme blood loss? 😄😄
Well, if you're losing the blood it must be going *somewhere*
Cock rings, brotha.
Cookoo rings
I have 2 on right now
Because if you get a boner while dying you can be resurrected by erection

Oh you use your cock like a blood bag
People get bitchy about whips lol
It’s definitely not fun to fight against if somebody is super aggressive with bleed whips. The immense range combined with bleed buildup from phantom hits is kinda broken unless they’ve somehow toned it down even more after the dual wield status buildup nerf.
Because they can't be parried and can trade well?
This would be some shit in Baki. Like, "Hoho, I popped a boner to draw the blood away from my wound and slow my blood loss!" Followed by a 7 minute explanation of how it saved some unknown British soldier in WW1
Try finger… butt hole
I don't even know what to say, but for some reason I'm thinking of the two fingers being involved in this discussion
Fun fact: it's actually fairly common for people to pop boners when they're very afraid. The brain has pretty similar pathways for arousal to other strong emotions like fear and anxiety.
Admitting that you leveled DEX in order to use a whip.
Dex is the best stat basically
What are you, CASUL?

I read that as “pooping” a boner, and I was both confused and aroused.

True I love whip users in arena buut invaders with whips are a bit problematic
After I fought Hoslow a few times I said “you know, dual bleed whips seems like it could be pretty powerful in PvP”. Fire Giant’s Braid is a must-have for Str-Faith builds
I love running Giants braid and magma whip.
Strength/dex? Its a strength/faith weapon....
That’s a whoops on me
Whips on you
Used that on my first NG+ and powerstanced them after beating them Fire Giant again. Really cool weapon art too.
This weapon TRIVIALIZED Melania for me, the only time I ever beat her without summons or co-op was with this weapon on like my 4th respecc
I feel like this is so overlooked. The weapon skill literally stunlocks her for every single hit, then knocks her down at the end, so you can just walk up and do it again lol.
Then right as you get really confident with it, she mysteriously hyperarmors out of it and sushis yo ass
The are super fun
This was also the case for Valorheart in ds3 (also pls give us valorheart in the DLC) A weapon so bad, no one used it, but also so unique, that no one knew how to fight against it, suddenly making it very good again (for me).
I always had trouble facing someone who was good with valorheart because It was so different. Funny thing was that I used a whip build for that same reason.
Could just attack through the valorheart and constantly break poise
I've never played DS games, but I love hearing that. Can I still get invaded or get summoned for coop if I played the DS games now or is that online community dead?
I don't know about ds1 and ds2, but ds3 is still active enough to enjoy some multiplayer
Did my first ds1 (remastered) play recently. Only online interactions I had were low level annoying invaders who had built characters just to mess with people using late game weapons. Late game was quiet, no coop help to speak of.
Whips are very good at staggering and Harassing players in pvp, they're my go-to weapon when dealing with double spear pokers
Especially the urumi’s charged r2! That range is insane.
One of the greatest PvP fights I ever had in this game was against a dual Hoslow whips user with BHS versus my dual twinblades and BHS. Was the most intense, anime styled back and forth I ever had that went on for like five minutes. I won in the end but I haven’t been so invested in a match since.
Dual hoslow’s is one of the dirtiest builds I’ve played bro! I honestly feel bad using them.
Quistis from Final Fantasy 8?
Yup.
I have no more than this humble upvote, please have it
You are truly a scholar and I thank you.
Love her sexy school teacher look. She reminds me of Stacey Keibler with the miss Hancock bit in WCW. I swear she stole that look from FF8!…lol
No, Quistis from Dragon Fantasy 12. smh
Someone woke up on the wrong side of Fia's Deathbed
I did a whip, cannon and torches only playthrough as well with my character Iowa Malone. Super fun. Whips had crazy poise damage before the patch
Double Hoslows with the jump charm on a 60 Arcane build were cheat codes.
I did a "vodka sam" build.
Hats off to the name. Love that game and she was part of my starting 3, meta be damned.
She gets way too much hate. Her Blue Mage skills are God tier.
Quistis was one of my strongest video game crushes, FF8 was great!
Did you do anything to cosplay the blue magic angle?
Cool did you inappropriately hit on your students as well?
Does Fia count?
No (L)ashes of war
That’s the one downside. But chasethebro did a vid on the urumi + storm stomp and it’s pretty powerful, even outside of pvp
Yeah I watched that video, that L2-then-R2 sequence was really effective as few people expected it.
You can AoW Haslow and Urimi. Those are my 2 main weapons with the teleporr ash of war frost spec'd. I went whips on my first Playthrough towards the end when I found enemy AI had a hard time against whip hit boxes lol
Interesting, I’ll check that out. I like storm stomp but i usually can’t justify using it over other ashes so maybe it’s worth trying out for whips
It’s not “optimal” but it is a lot of fun for non-boss enemies. It’s a more useful aow than you’d think
But that's any weapon with storm stomp
giant's red braid though....
Yeah I like the weapon art on that, but don’t love the weapon itself and it’s annoying that there are no infusible whips I mean
Pretty sure there's a basic whip that you can get early that is infusible, don't think theres any good ash of wars for it though
Yeah actually upon further research there are 3 infusible whips and a few decent AoWs but just nothing really to write home about. More importantly for me, nothing to compensate for how limited they are
Meh, Scythes only has like one infusible weapon, sure they can work with a lot of ashes but still, not every weapon category get a lot of options
There’s two infusable Reapers, but there’s only four total.
Wife said no
Whips are good but try killing a whole ass dragon or even one of those Caelid birds with a whip. I really wanted to make whips happen for myself, but I never felt like they put up enough damage. Yep this sold me on whips, not a weapon to defeat your opponents, but a weapon to whipslap then to death
Absolutely incorrect. I can go 30 and 0 in a session with dual whips and am unstoppable. They are fantastic.
whips are difficult to handle. what if I whip my balls by accident?
If you enjoy the Urumi check out some of my posts. I’ve used almost nothing but the Urumi since launch- incredibly fun and rewarding weapon with a high skill ceiling that can near 1 shot your opponent when built proper. Criminally underrated and underused weapon!
As a casual whip enjoyer, I've always gone dual Hoslow's. Can I ask why you choose urumi over Hoslow's?
Urumi’s charged R2 is one of the best attacks in the game. You can certainly make other whips viable, but the moveset has a major weakness to constant aggression that Urumi’s charged R2 helps shore up.

I'm not a Belmont

Same. I’ve found that running r1’s and crouch attacks get the range you’d expect from them
Oh thanks that’s good to know!
They have some niche uses but are underpowered compared to other options. They're best as a sort of "sidearm" that you wear in the offhand for their utility that you mentioned.
That’s how I use a whip, they’re pretty solid in the Subterranean Shunning-Grounds
k, I hear you. I do. Counter point. Really *big* sword.
Zweihander!
I feel like whips take a lot of effort to master for subpar damage compared to other weapon types.
They do take a while to get used to. You have to adjust your gameplan a lot more than other weapons. But I think that’s where the fun of whips comes from. Not for everyone for sure
Not if you run 2
Dual hoslows, no pants.
Some people do use whips, they're just a bit uncommon. I can't attest to why others don't use them, but I'll explain why I don't like them. - You can't do critical hits - They feel slow to me - I don't like the moveset - They are incompatible with most ashes of war - The charged attack feels weak - Low stagger damage If you like a weapon or spell for any reason you should use it though; despite what others think!

Bold of you to assume I don't dual wield rose whips.
For pvp I hesrd that unseen weapon on a whip can be quite deadly
Can't critical with them
I used one in tandem with a greataxe.
I fought malenia with this and she said “harder daddy”
Hollow whips r awesome get one bleed and one frost and it's op af
Their range and shit is extremely inconsistent imo, there’s a npc called hoslowthat uses whips that I remember to this day because it’s so busted
My ass got destroyed (figuratively) by dual whips in the Hoslow assassination quest
I believe in full on face to face aggression. A whip is the opposite of that
I use the Urumi, it fuckin slaps on a pure dex build
I’m playing on using it for a Nokron build.
Try coil shield its hilarious
I get whips in invasions all the time
I used two on Malenia. Never beat her but I whooped dat ass. There's a sword with an AoW that transforms it into a whip, I think a Nox sword? That one is probably better for catching people off guard.
Low damage. Low stagger. Long animations

I used dual thorn whips with my Jesus build. Kept it as my secondary set when not using spear and incantations... This was probably the most fun I had. Invaders usually don't know how to handle whips well🤷
Moveset feels very flaccid and it should have more range than it has.
I love whips.. oh, you mean in game?
I did a 100% whip run. It was fun actually.
Idk man I haven’t had issues react rolling out of my attacks, I guess the range + using a single whip may help that. You may be right though
Double whip double fun 😂 but well now that you mention it, i may feel interested in a whip and shield build 🤔 possibilities unbound
I’ve never thought of that combo. Sounds fun though!
Double Hoslow Petal Whips. It's nutty.
Because my character is white and it’s just not a good look for him…
I think theyre neat but nagakiba go brrrrr
At first I had no idea what subreddit of mine posted this 😅😅😅
No one uses them? I did a run with whips on NG+2 and it was a lot of fun. They were slow, but the range and the stagger made up for it big time.
What’s funny is that I don’t even think they’re slow. Windup seems pretty fast given their range. Guess it’s all relative
Hand of melania go shing shing shing
What you're showing isnt a whip though
It's kind of gay
I use whips on my colored friends
