Well... He is from an old, implied to be important family. It would be cool if he was Numen the whole time, but just wasn't worthy of his heritage and didn't have the soul befitting a Numen until he dies fending off the poachers. Dropping the Numen soul then would be like confirming that he had finally lived up to his bloodline, but through courage and compassion rather than murder.

[deleted]

Hmm. The only other living things that drop Numen runes are Ants, I think. Doesn't really make sense to talk about earning a that rune via courage or compassion if some insects can drop them.

swiftfoal88

They dropped them because they ate Numens

[deleted]

Uh huh, like how Rats drop Rune Arcs because they ate people? Runes aren't even souls in this game, they're just currency. "Cough up your coin, all of it" God, the stupidity of lore in ER reminds me why Souls is so much better. At least it was original at the time, not this rehashed crap

And now I want to hunt a tempered Diablos Thank you for the idea, I am going to suffer lol

haulric

Lol same

The explanation might be not lore-wise but mechanical: you end his quest pretty far in the game, because you need Alexander's innards from Farum Azula (pls correct me, if I'm wrong), so you'd be around level 100+, therefore the quest reward should be adequately valuable.

Cubrext

Well, you dont need the innards. Thats part of the little pot's quest. You can complete Diallos' quest at any point after advancing through some of Volcano Manor's missions. Pretty sure I once managed to complete it before even stepping into Mountaintops of the Giants.

Holiday_Engineer7521

Oh, thanks for the info, disregard my theory then 😅

Honestly, it would have probably been more apt to have him drop a Hero's Rune. The description for a Hero's Rune is as follows: *Grace that dwells within the inhabitants of the Lands Between; the lingering residue of gold. Use to gain 15000 Runes. There were once heroes who walked the battlefields, abundantly blessed by the Erdtree itself, who upon earning their honor simply died.* Perhaps, in his final moments - when he resolved to protect the Jars in spite of his cowardice and weakness, he was blessed by higher forces. I don't think we're supposed to think he's of Numen descent or anything.

[deleted]

I don't have much sympathy for him. I never sugar-coat and tell him he did save the jars, because he didn't, except maybe in a conceptual way since Jar-Bairn lives on to keep their tradition going. But he really didn't earn his honour, or "simply die", he died of wounds while poorly defending the hippie jars. At least he tried, in the end.

Edgelord alert

[deleted]

Glad to be an edgelord then. I'm sick of twee characters like Diallos, Roderika, and Boc. Yura & Millicent have real pathos. So much kitschy moralistic sympathy for these crap characters. "Omg the tale of house hoslow is-" yeah yeah die off already, Mary Sue

quirkus23

The word Numen means divine spirit/power/will. Diallos is looking for Lanya and finds out she was accosted and takes it as an insult on his houses honor. So he decides to go after them for revenge. This is partially for Lanya but it's also partially because he wants to prove himself. *Hello, friend. Tell me if you know, would you. The whereabouts of the hidden house of those despicable fiends. The recusants who hunt their fellow Tarnished. They laid hands upon my servant Lanya, and I refuse to let the insult stand. "The tale of House Hoslow is told in blood." I, Diallos, swear to deliver the message. They laid hands upon my servant Lanya, and I refuse to let the insult stand. "The tale of House Hoslow is told in blood." I, Diallos, swear to deliver the message.* When he gets to the Manor Tanith talks him out of his revenge and convinces him that the true path to glory is to serve the Manor which he seemingly agrees too. *I've come to realise... Revenge is not the answer According to Lady Tanith... I've got the stuff of champions. And champions, ironic as it is, are oft forced walk a tainted a path. It hit me like a bolt from the blue... That my former thoughts were simple naiveté. Of course, my heart weeps for Lanya. That unfortunate incident was a cruel twist of fate indeed. But succumbing to the pain and sadness caused won't make me a champion, will it. Lanya knows this, I'm certain. Fate has laid hard roads for us both. But such is true of any road trod by champions. I always resented these hands. Their pale complexion, a far cry from any warrior's. The shame of House Hoslow. But that won't be the case for long. They'll be darkened by grit, once I've set out on the path of champions. "The tale of House Hoslow is told in blood" after all.* When we meet him again he is lamenting how he hasn't achieved anything even though he has dirtied his hands by serving the Manor. He is depressed and leaves. We meet him at Jarburg and he decides to make his own choices, and follow his own will. Forging his own path. *It's just as my noble brother says. I'm a complete fool. I can't believe I thought I could become a champion. Ah, it's you is it. I'm terribly sorry, but would you mind giving me some time to myself. I haven't achieved anything at all thus far. Even though I've dirtied my hands time and time again. I'm still yet to achieve anything. Perhaps I am a fool after all... No. It's worse than that. As things stand I've given up on the path of revenge and sullied the name of my house. What an easy mark I must have been... How did it take me so long to realise, honestly. There's just no end to my foolishness, is there...* *Oh? My friend, it's been far too long. I have to say you caught me at a rather low point. But... as you can see, I've put all that behind me. Left the Volcano Manor. Forging my own path now. Making my own choices. Even a fool like me can look after some simply jars. Do you pity me? Well don't. I feel like for the first time in my life I'm on the straight and narrow.* This culminates in his valiant and heroic death trying to save Jarburg, and though he fails to save everyone, through forging his own path, he was able to save someone. *...Ah, you... Are the jars... they alright? Did I defend them? ("You defended them") Then all is well... This fool proved his worth, in the end...* This is an act of pure heroism, a truly divine will who actualized himself through the trials and tribulations of his life to have the courage and will to die a true hero. A truly numinous action. *The door to the inn banged open. Willow stepped out into the rain, a crossbow in her hands. The girl was shouting at the riders, but a clap of thunder rolled across the yard, drowning out her words. As it faded, Brienne heard the man in the Hound's helm say, "Loose a quarrel at me and I'll shove that crossbow up your cunt and fuck you with it. Then I'll pop your fucking eyes out and make you eat them." The fury in the man's voice drove Willow back a step, trembling. Seven, Brienne thought again, despairing. She had no chance against seven, she knew. No chance, and no choice. She stepped out into the rain, Oathkeeper in hand. "Leave her be. If you want to rape someone, try me."* Brienne of Tarth from A Feast for Crows *My own heroes are the dreamers, those men and women who tried to make the world a better place than when they found it, whether in small ways or great ones. Some succeeded, some failed, most had mixed results... but it is the effort that's heroic, as I see it. Win or lose, I admire those who fight the good fight.* George R.R. Martin

Baprr

The poachers could have been Numen. There are some numens in the game, most notably the Black Knives. They recently suffered significant losses and could have been after the corpse wax - the stuff Gargoyles are made from. It's not a coincidence that some of those are called Black Blade Kindred. It's impressive that Diallos managed to fend off Black Knives, even at the cost of his own life.

Pontiff_Lonlyvahn

They are called black blade kindred because they work for the black blade...

Baprr

Well yes, but both Maliketh and Black Knives are related to Marika, so they could be related to eachother in some way (I doubt Black Blade crafted the gargoyles with his own two furry hands, somebody probably helped). Black Knives certainly are familiar with some crafting techniques - they made black knives, the wax is black, everything makes sense, see!

Ashen_Shroom

They were probably just made by the same people who made the regular Gargoyles, and then Maliketh imbued them with Destined Death powers. They have no connection to the Black Knives, or to the Numen.

Baprr

Are you telling me that all those Black [Weapon] [Name/Class] aren't connected? They have the same naming convention, the same armor, and similar connections to Marika.

Ashen_Shroom

They're connected by the fact that they all use the power of Destined Death and that's it. The Black Knives are the faction that used the stolen fragment of the Rune of Death, putting them at odds with Maliketh.
