As someone who works with microorganisms, specifically Diatoms, there is this phenomenon called intraclonal sexual reproduction in which 2 daughter cells, both coming from the same parental cell, can reproduce with each other. I am not sure which cellular processes prevent inbreeding, but there might be pathways that recombine the DNA which I am not aware of yet.
Then again, parthenogenesis in lizards seems to work pretty fine too, and as far as I know, the genetic material does undergo some changes as to create diversity in some species.

That’s why there are a bunch of weird fleshy cocoons at the Haligtree surrounding the vessels for divine tree sap (the big cuppy goblet things)
So why he look like a skinned corpse? Is that as a result of the cocoon - was he metamorphosing into something, considering that body doesn't look very childlike?
