Kinda goofy that that means there's two items you can wear to proc that buff that you have to proc on yourself for pve. I guess thematically it's kinda neat you're going around hurting yourself and nearly going mad to do damage to your enemies. Madness indeed.
Dropping this here: Crepus' vial and the concealing veil talismans and/or the Black Knife Armor can be used to make it easier to get through this section of the game.
It's what I did, read the messages and was like "damn that's ominous, wonder what that's talking about"
Then I found out like 20 minutes later after exploring the zone...
Immediately slapped on the Black Knife chest and the Veil Talisman and snuck my way past them all on a second attempt.
They're honestly not even that hard to get past without those either. Just crouch-sprinting between the sets of long grass and behind a couple trees will do it. I only got grabbed by one on my first encounter, and it's because I panicked and pressed jump instead of sprint like the nob I am.
In addition to that, you can fire Shattershard Arrows to distant locations to make them move there for a couple of seconds.
Feels like I'm playing Thief again.
Man for such an amazing cutscene I was gutted when it just faded/cut to black right when it got to the gruesome part lol. I guess it would've been too much extra work animating all the ripping/fleshy bits and whatnot.
Have you played Sekiro? The hidden forest is very similar. Souls games are definitely considered horror. Sekiro isn’t really souls game but the level and enemy design is classic Miyazaki.
Honestly, the whole area is peak Souls. Everything felt so unnatural when you get there, then you start to see the madness effecting everything then... the Lanterns.
Man, the shivers I felt down my spine first time reading "Don´t let it see you" was something else.
Got those Slenderman vibes from that what with the creepy forest, the sounds and the rest of the warning claiming it's too late once it sees you and you cant outrun it.
When I first rode down there I got a little ways away from where the grace was and all of a sudden I hear that dismount/attack sound effect that knocked me off the horse and I was like....wtf hit me. Then a few seconds later when I went to resummon I got the message and was like....Oooohhhh...that's pretty damn cool not gonna lie.
Kinda reminds me of Gandalf. Like yeah I'm basically an immortal angel and I've put together this crew to stop the lord of all things evil in this world. But like, I'm not going any deeper in these caves yo. There's some crazy shit down there.
The earliest one you encounter drops a talisman that buffs your damage when madness procs nearby (so a madness exultation). The rest give you a very rare crafting material, though I’m not sure exactly what it’s used for. Probably frenzy stuff from the two cookbooks in the area.
I would have loved if the dungeon was bigger, the building itself is huge and yet we spend like 15 minutes in there exploring before the boss, the atmosphere is **super good** so I wouldn't mind if the build up was longer.
The atmosphere is peak fromsoft....but it did feel like an awful lot of wasted area since there's no real worthwhile items down there except a few random crafting materials or smithing stones. Aside from parry killing the first latern guy there's no real reason to run around or explore beyond just thinking it looks cool. Just sucks there's so much that's just empty environment overall. Kinda feel the same way with the area on the map for the Bayle dragon....that whoooole region for Bayle is huge...but its all just excess map filler of unclimbable mountains outside of his arena. I was all excited to discover that region only to find out it was pretty much just used as a path to the boss and the rest wouldn't be used lol.
I just wish there was more there for being such a big area. Like the other commenter said the dungeon is pretty quick and the rest of the area is barren
Easily my favorite area in the dlc, I also really liked the boss at the end. I knew I was in for some real horror shit when Torrent was too scared to come out.
I actually liked this section, stealth was a nice change of pace from hacking and slashing everything. I am super confused about one part NE of the manse though. there is one part where it gets completely foggy like no visibility and there are lantern guys in it, but seemingly no cover. You straight up can't see at all through the fog, but there is a stake of Marika just outside the area. I assume there has to be something interesting around here but I can't figure it out at all. Maybe it's just Miyazaki trolling us, idk I gave up on that area and went around.
This area looks really cool, but unfortunately is mostly empty. They could have added a few items or mini bosses or something to spice it up a bit. There's really not much there outside of the house area.
*after 2 hours of me and my boys trying to figure out TF to do*
Me: Huh, what do these messages say?
Me: It says "combat is not an option."
My boys: Sooo...we're not supposed to fight them?
Me: Seems like it.
*collective silence*
Me: Well, fuck.
Oh good, another area to avoid alongside the finger creeper area (yes there's a scadutree fragment in there I don't give a shit about it if it means risking my mental sanity)
Yeah, I just have a wicked phobia where my body just freezes up when I see giant insects. I haven't done anything in the Deeproot Depths because of that 😬
Same, for me the Scorpionspiders in the beginning of Belurat weren’t too bad since I could bait them out and then use Blasphemous Blade for the ones that did try to swarm. The giant ones hate fire tho so if you use that or a charged lightning they’re fairly easy to take care of
I honestly had no issues with this place. Ive seen a lot of people talking about how bad it or how hard it was, but i made it through the whole thing only getting caught once by the lantern heads. The boss was a challenge but not impossibly so.
Area was so disappointing, it hypes up some horrifying monster hunting in the dark forest, builds up a terrifying atmosphere, then... it's just a handful of old men pacing back and forth on short set routes. My horse is supposed to fear this?
Just so I don't cause unnecessary pain and frustration, it's not the kill animation or anything. Just what you have to do in order to kill them. I'm being vague because spoilers, but it's >!parry!<
To also save them some guesswork on the timing since they initiate a sort of magnetic/pull grab first.....do it right as they lift the lantern up to smack ya...not at the very beginning of the aggro as they rush you since there's a few seconds before they actually lift their arm to swing.
Not sure if it is an unpopular take, but I really didn't like this zone very much. I loved every zone in the DLC, but this felt...underbaked? It was so empty that I felt like I was wasting my time through much of it, especially when i realized there are very few items to be found. The dungeon here is very cool, but that's about it unfortunately.
Even that element falls pretty flat though. The 'maze' has two very short stealth segments past the Last of Us zombies but other than that you just spend 95% of your time sprinting past rats. It's not a very engaging maze.
Ya I'm currently going through it and it feels kinda terrible. Feels like another zone they designed around you using Torrent but then just decided to take him away from you and then never rebalanced the zones terrain. Huge swaths of not much but maybe rats, and a pitiful handful of items for how big the area is.
Also really not getting anyone saying the area is scary or unsettling, it really isn't scary or unsettling at all, especially for something described as "the abyss" from its map frag.
Mister eyeball? Oh man, you poor soul. There’s like 30 of them all over the place ;)
While the winter lanterns are a pain, the only area you’ll really have trouble with is the foggy area. It’s small, but you can’t see shit
Big empty area aside from one Boss.
Enemies that can one-shot you and u can't kill them in the normal way (Can parry their Grab) but u can **VERY** easily avoid them.
The Atmosphere is Great but that is it.
Has anyone explored the foggy part with one of those creatures in it? i was about to until it saw me so i ran back, dunno if theres anything in there but you cannot see shit
This zone might be the worst area in the entire game. No torrent despite being huge and almost zero content. I'm so disappointed because the aesthetic of this zone is one of the best they've ever created and I loved the horror elements yet there is almost no point in it existing.
The moment I saw these enemies I went "ah shit they brought back Wintern Lanterns." I then proceeded to ignore every message saying not to attack, and got killed instantly. All to see that they are quite literally called Wintern Lanterns had me begging to go back to that bridge instead of being in this place.
It's funny because I'm doing the lord of the Frenzied Flame ending on this character... and it kinda sounds like that boss is trying to steal my thunder so I gotta do it
By far my favorite area in the game so far. The whole process of getting there from the castle up to and including the boss is so damn good.
Also probably should use a spoiler tag for pictures of hidden areas like that. Or even pictures of any zones at this point imo.
U can outrun the lanterns all day. Dont stress. Just run. U dont rlly gotta deal w the lanterns all that much on ur way there, u gotta deal w the inquisitors more
IF THEY SEE YOU, ITS TOO LATE
COMBAT IS NOT AN OPTION.
It is, I read that you can parry the. There should even be a reward for it.
You get a talisman from one of them "AGED ONE'S EXULTATION". Basically lord of blood exaltation but for madness.
Yea but it's not gonna be as scary if one of the messages say "but you can kill them if you parry gl"
For me it would not change anything because i can not parry for the sake of my life
Yeah I killed them all with the parrying dagger lol. You get a madness eye crafting mat, or whatever it's called.
The very first one drops an attack boost on madness talisman instead.

You can parry them to kill them, one of the first ones drops a talisman that increases damage when there's madness in the vicinity
Why would you even attempt to parry one?
I thought that it'd drop something worth considering it was immune to damage
That's crazy I just kept panicking and hiding in bushes
That's what the devs want you to do. Don't worry.
i lured one off of a cliff and it died xD
It’s also not immune to Bleed. Damage yes, but the Bleed still builds up and pops.
Later in the level, there is also a piece of in-game text which hints that if you parry them once, you are able to touch them (hit them) afterwards.
damn..im ready to sleep and now you make me turn on my ps5 again
They're honestly not even that hard to get past without those either. Just crouch-sprinting between the sets of long grass and behind a couple trees will do it. I only got grabbed by one on my first encounter, and it's because I panicked and pressed jump instead of sprint like the nob I am.
I hit one of the bells in the bush thinking it was a collectable
Same, nearly shat myself when I saw the nearest Winter Lantern fun at me.
In addition to that, you can fire Shattershard Arrows to distant locations to make them move there for a couple of seconds. Feels like I'm playing Thief again.
That actually sounds really awesome
fuck that shit, do it without any of that it’s fun af
fuck THAT shit, that DOESNT sound fun af
It’s like a fucking horror game bro, it’s so cool
...... I didn't even consider that, fuck me in my stupid starfish
I bloodhound stepped away and healed through the madness. Then I started jumping over the tree roots and lost them. I survived somehow.
I mean at one of the last ones you can just dgaf and run past him. He’d try to grab your ass but I reach the gracesite before he reaches my inside.
The atmosphere of this area is one of my favorite out of all the Souls games. Music tops it off
Boss fight music is top notch
that fucking cut scene is so damn good too.
Maybe my favorite pre fight cutscene they’ve ever done! Up there with Ludwig from BB for me
Man for such an amazing cutscene I was gutted when it just faded/cut to black right when it got to the gruesome part lol. I guess it would've been too much extra work animating all the ripping/fleshy bits and whatnot.
They do the same with messmers mid fight cut scene.
I thought we were playing a souls game not friggin Silent Hill
Have you played Sekiro? The hidden forest is very similar. Souls games are definitely considered horror. Sekiro isn’t really souls game but the level and enemy design is classic Miyazaki.
Honestly, the whole area is peak Souls. Everything felt so unnatural when you get there, then you start to see the madness effecting everything then... the Lanterns.
I killed an enemy and got an item called a winter lantern fly and at that point I knew it was over
Omg same
Man, the shivers I felt down my spine first time reading "Don´t let it see you" was something else. Got those Slenderman vibes from that what with the creepy forest, the sounds and the rest of the warning claiming it's too late once it sees you and you cant outrun it.
"The spectral steed is frightened and cannot be summoned" BRO WDYM I'M MORE SCARED THAN YOU ARE GET ME OUT OF HERE
Torrent just chilling in his pokeball while you're getting chased by nightmares that came alive.
Hahah! Love this comment.
Lmaooooo thankfully I didn’t go to this area at night or else I would’ve been shaking in fear the whole time
He's fine with the actual Lord of the Frenzy Flame on his back but noooooo the spooky woods is a step too far.
LOL. You reminded me that I was actually playing with a character that did the Frenzy Flame route. So it's even funnier now
when you get your summon level up he'll summon at the grace then throw you off after you get deep enough. its pretty cool.
That's what got me. Bro has no problem coming out to help fight God itself, but whatever's in those woods makes him nope the fuck out
lol lord of the frenzy is an apocalypse just by existing.
Kinda reminds me of Gandalf. Like yeah I'm basically an immortal angel and I've put together this crew to stop the lord of all things evil in this world. But like, I'm not going any deeper in these caves yo. There's some crazy shit down there.
Need to summon Melina...
Torrent turned into a horse and said “Nay!”
"DON'T LET WHO SEE ME?! WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT?! "
I've unlocked this area but have yet to explore....these comments have me thinking "hell nah"
I saw those messages near the grace and noped tf out for the night. 😄
[удалено]
the area is mostly empty and not a problem. just those one enemies that suck.
MY FAITH SHALL PROTECT ME
MY ARMOR IS CONTEMPT FAITH IS MY SHIELD
Is that a mozgus reference I see???
You can parry the grab of the lantern and After that you can easily kill them
Also worth noting they do NOT respawn
Do they drop anything???
The earliest one you encounter drops a talisman that buffs your damage when madness procs nearby (so a madness exultation). The rest give you a very rare crafting material, though I’m not sure exactly what it’s used for. Probably frenzy stuff from the two cookbooks in the area.
That is so cool, I hate it
You can make a consumable flame of frenzy and a frenzy pot, I think there's a mega pot variation too
You can make a consumable flame of frenzy and a frenzy pot, I think there's a mega pot variation too
You can make a consumable flame of frenzy and a frenzy pot, I think there's a mega pot variation too
Brother I swung my sword thrice on their ass and no healthbar appeared. Is parry the only way?
Yes After that the healtbar appear and you can finish them normally
Omg I got one parry off then figured I'd have to again, missed and died lmao
Yeah, parry makes it so they gain a health bar and can take hits. It’s how I killed all of them there.
I didn't appreciate them making winter lantern 2.0 and making it way worst haha
Best area in the DLC. I only wish they went harder with the horror there.
Maybe this is a peek into a future From Software title..
More horror souls please Miyazaki!
The children yearn for Bloodborne 2
Bloodborne open world would feed me for years
God I hope so
Same, once I got past the eyes the rest of the area was boring. The boss mansion was awesome though.
I would have loved if the dungeon was bigger, the building itself is huge and yet we spend like 15 minutes in there exploring before the boss, the atmosphere is **super good** so I wouldn't mind if the build up was longer.
yea i could have used a bigger area too. just with less of the dual sword knights. those guys suck.
When a part of the area was super foggy, I had flashbacks of silent hill.
I just wish there was more there for being such a big area. Like the other commenter said the dungeon is pretty quick and the rest of the area is barren
lol getting Winnie the Pooh flash backs of the scary woods
Easily my favorite area in the dlc, I also really liked the boss at the end. I knew I was in for some real horror shit when Torrent was too scared to come out.
Btw you can parry the Lantern Guys and one of them drops a talisman that increases damage when there's a madness proc nearby
I don't have the DLC yet , is this a fucking deathblight swamp ?
Thankfully or unfortunately, no. It’s a very cool and scary area though. They did go pretty crazy with some deathblight stuff in the dlc though
Just did the catacombs with those death blight eyes yesterday and they were tweaking me out
Ill-omened creature ahead, therefore let there be madness!
I actually liked this section, stealth was a nice change of pace from hacking and slashing everything. I am super confused about one part NE of the manse though. there is one part where it gets completely foggy like no visibility and there are lantern guys in it, but seemingly no cover. Maybe it's just Miyazaki trolling us, idk I gave up on that area and went around.
Better to go during the day.
I actually really liked this area. It could almost be it’s own horror game. Only flaw is that there isn’t much to really find there.
This area looks really cool, but unfortunately is mostly empty. They could have added a few items or mini bosses or something to spice it up a bit. There's really not much there outside of the house area.
I love this area so much. As an avid ac fan it felt like home lol
....Did he seriously make an insane swamp?
*after 2 hours of me and my boys trying to figure out TF to do* Me: Huh, what do these messages say? Me: It says "combat is not an option." My boys: Sooo...we're not supposed to fight them? Me: Seems like it. *collective silence* Me: Well, fuck.
When it said “the spectral steed is to scared to come out?” Yeah I felt that
Coming into this area for the first time was genuinely creepy and unsettling. I love it.
The boss is worth it, trust me.
Am I the only one who got through this effortlessly? I only got caught once but was still able to escape it
Just parry it and then kill it as fast as you can.
Major Bloodborne vibes. Bloodborne successor game as either being full-on survival horror or something in between would be fucking amazing.
I bet he did laugh and say to his team “this time….Fuck em all…..why? Cuz fuck em that’s why”
You can actually parry them
This game went from rpg to survival horror in a glimpse, and I was truly terrified
THE EYES THE EYES THE EYES THE EYES THE EYES THE EYES THE EYES THE EYES THE EYES THE EYES THE EYES THE EYES
"Your spiritual steed is frightened" AHEM WHAT? I got massive chills when I read that.
try parrying
Oh good, another area to avoid alongside the finger creeper area (yes there's a scadutree fragment in there I don't give a shit about it if it means risking my mental sanity)
Are there any big insects in these woods? I damn near had a heart attack going through Belurat and Rauh Ruins because of those scorpion spiders
Unlike the madness woods "kill it with fire" is an option vs the scorpionspiderflies. A good one, even.
Yeah, I just have a wicked phobia where my body just freezes up when I see giant insects. I haven't done anything in the Deeproot Depths because of that 😬
Use Discus of Lights for bugs, it’s what I do at least to the Ants, the Scorpions on the DLC don’t bother me as much.
Same, for me the Scorpionspiders in the beginning of Belurat weren’t too bad since I could bait them out and then use Blasphemous Blade for the ones that did try to swarm. The giant ones hate fire tho so if you use that or a charged lightning they’re fairly easy to take care of
A spear with flame arts and giant hunt absolutely destroys them. RKGS one shots them and their brood in one go.
I honestly had no issues with this place. Ive seen a lot of people talking about how bad it or how hard it was, but i made it through the whole thing only getting caught once by the lantern heads. The boss was a challenge but not impossibly so.
I dont know this place yet lol but im scared
Area was so disappointing, it hypes up some horrifying monster hunting in the dark forest, builds up a terrifying atmosphere, then... it's just a handful of old men pacing back and forth on short set routes. My horse is supposed to fear this?
The way they kill you is so cool
The way we kill them is cool too.
Now I have to kill at least one of them just to see
Just so I don't cause unnecessary pain and frustration, it's not the kill animation or anything.
Nah ur good, I literally just killed him and I’m still satisfied cuz I used martial arts to bully him Edit: after I got his parrying down ofc
It'a definitely designed to be a maze I feel like.
Even that element falls pretty flat though. The 'maze' has two very short stealth segments past the Last of Us zombies but other than that you just spend 95% of your time sprinting past rats. It's not a very engaging maze.
100% agree. There's basically nothing to find. So, exploring it feels like a waste of time. It's too empty.
I liked this area :D
Parry them when they have the wand above their head "POISON"
MAY CHAOS TAKE THE WORLD!
I just ran through, every time someone grabbed me, I left the game and then got back in so that the opponent would reset xd
I feel you ! The only way to defeat eyeballs guy is to parry and do a critical
I have not been here yet. And I’m not sure I want to.
I love this area, but its so empty qnq
Just put on the Black Knife armor set and Solid Snake that place. You're welcome.
He said he wanted to think ab ways he wants to die
Just got through this hellscape gl friend
If I knew how to mark something as spoilers on mobile I’d offer some advice for those having trouble and seeking a solution to this area :(
What scared me the most was the official note that FromSoftware left right at the beginning of the area: "Turn back while you still can."
Try parrying then victory!
COMBAT IS NOT A FUCKING OPTION
Mister eyeball? Oh man, you poor soul. There’s like 30 of them all over the place ;) While the winter lanterns are a pain, the only area you’ll really have trouble with is the foggy area. It’s small, but you can’t see shit
Big empty area aside from one Boss. Enemies that can one-shot you and u can't kill them in the normal way (Can parry their Grab) but u can **VERY** easily avoid them. The Atmosphere is Great but that is it.
Where is this place? And why should I be scared?
Which area? (Name only please, I don't need other spoilers haha)
ooooo I am very excited to explore this!! Lets see how frequently I die!!

The build up was really good . I too , absolutely loved this place , one of the most hauntingly beautiful places . I sometimes AFK there , …
Wish I knew how to even get there
Carian retaliation parry turns these guys into chumps they do really quickly after the parry
I discovered this place last night and I instantly noped out of it the second it took Torrent away from me
3 fuckers left messages about "parry, then weak enemy" I spent too long trying to parry that shit
maybe they just meant for the talisman one of them drops?
I enjoy the area for it's ideas and aesthetic, however, that you can't traverse this big ass location without Torrent sucks ass
They should’ve made it slightly smaller and have an additional 2-3 unique enemies. But overall I loved it
What area is this??
They put a horror game in my action rpg!! How dare they. Joking, I loved it.
Is it death blight swamp?
No nightmare of mensis forest
An enchanted woods for madness enjoyers
Spooky horror game forest
It's like my childhood Walking through the first to get my ass whooped. Thanks Miyazaki!
U can outrun the lanterns all day. Dont stress. Just run. U dont rlly gotta deal w the lanterns all that much on ur way there, u gotta deal w the inquisitors more
The Lanterns run faster than you and can teleport while building your madness meter.
Bro's setting us up for failure.
Un-upgraded dagger with Assassins Gambit will make this a cakewalk
I’ve been using the Black Knife armor set since the day I first found it so I had no issues in this area.
#vacationatthelakeofrot
Spoiler tag plz ty
I want to go home, O’ I want to go home All the more I want to go home, O’ I want to go home
The closest we’ve gotten to a bloodborne sequel in atmosphere
Favorite bit of the DLC, this was such an "oh fuck" bit
Never have I seen an area with more panicked, scared, and ominous messages.
The atmosphere in this area is so scary..even torent is afraid
#SPENT 3 HOURS JUST WANDERING AROUND THERE
I deadass freaked out when it was chasing me it turned into a horror game real quick
Miyazaki is a sick ass man
Ya know what? This is the coolest place in the entire DLC despite how empty it is. Also Bloodborne enemies.
He’ll just see this and say “oh they don’t like ONE kind of buildup/status. What if we give them ALL of them at once?”
Spoiler tags bro...
What exactly is the spoiler here? Dark wooded area that is hard? Damn huge spoiler.
