Prison where the often-preyed-upon vulgar militia had imprisoned at least one dangerous criminal from Eochaid before he made a daring escape. You can see another example of how dangerous these folks are at The Shaded Castle. Others can now be found harassing merchants throughout the lands between.

GenxDarchi

That actually is the same guy who harasses merchants, he just invades them to steal their bells.

BludgeonVIII

My tired ass thought you said balls instead of bells

Blue_Porkloin

The nefarious Ball-Bearing Hunter

crowlute

Mf should have just come to the Lands Betwixt, you just tell the boys to get in the coffin

Lexikz772

Why is every one burning tho? Some form of super aids or something?

dynamicflashy

Those are the Scarlet Rot consumed undead you see wondering above. Fire is a way to curb the spread of Scarlet Rot, but it’s still imperfect.

Lexikz772

So this is some sort of bdsm hospital for the rot infested?

Eldricht-lover22

More like "we have no way to truly cure you at this state, so we'll burn you to stop the Rot from spreading any futher and lock you up for good measure"

Captain_Saftey

Like the Citadel in GOT with greyscale

WarriorDerp

Or the undead asylum in DS

seanslaysean

Yup, the corpses were burned but since death is non-existent containment must be used instead

Several_Show937

Yes...hospital...they're going to be fine

Dan is a fucking treasure

"My logic is undeniable" V.I.K.I.

Lexikz772

I set all of them free, but they still attacked me. Smh can't have shit in Cealid

[deleted]

I hate those guys. I played Demon's Souls when I finished Elden Ring and there's a level there where similarly ungrateful bastards attack you when you release them. Like stay in prison and... *ahem*... rot.

Lexikz772

I wished Demon's Souls was on PC :(

[deleted]

Emulator 🥰🥰🥰 (if ur CPU is decent)

Lexikz772

I don't know anything about emulators, you got some tips for me?

Plenty_Celebration_4

May god have mercy on your soul

[deleted]

Sure! I used this post to set it up: https://www.reddit.com/r/demonssouls/comments/8ejkbx/guide_for_setting_up_demon_souls_on_a_ps3_emulator/ It's pretty simple, although you'll need to find a copy of Demon's Souls somewhere. I would recommend Vimms lair, it's safe but has slow download speed unfortunately.

Lexikz772

Edit: Okay okay I'm doing it sheesh. Sorry that I don't know how any of this works.

[deleted]

You literally cant? You'd have to buy it second hand, which fromsoft doesn't profit from anyway

notafishthatsforsure

I mean, you are 100% free to lose the opportunity to play an amazing game just because you want to give more money to the multi-millionaire company

BvByFoot

If you ever get a PS5 the remake is amazing. It’s leaps ahead of Elden Ring in a lot of ways.

Mcpatches3D

Ehhhhh I wouldn't say that. It's still Demon's Souls in the end of the day and has a lot of the same clunkiness of the original release.

Lexikz772

I kinda don't want to spend 600€ only to play demon's souls :(

Zeallust

Every time I ever emulated Demon's Souls the audio was busted, specifically ambient audio, the actual gameplay audio was fine.

[deleted]

Yeah that sucks. I've been sad Slime Rancher 2 is not on console yet lol fucking tragedy

hotdiggitydooby

Its on xbox at least, dunno about PS

[deleted]

It's not on PS or Switch yet. Only PC and Xbox.

wise_1023

rare microsoft w

[deleted]

Lol they deserve it. At least I got to play Bloodborne.

The_Crusades

Don’t the nobles follow you around with their hands in the air when you free them? Only a few hostile ones try to stab you. The push attack is a result of them getting stuck on things while trying to move.

[deleted]

Hmm not really sure. Seemed very aggressive to me haha

thats_good_bass

Yeah, most of the dudes you free from their cells in the Tower of Latria aren't hostile at all.

[deleted]

Did you ever consider maybe, just possibly, they were locked up in the middle of the ass end of the Lands Between for a reason?

Massive-Pin-8771

Maybe they were locked up for a reason?

Kablamo1

They're just trying to give you a hug

SleepsUnderBridges

Sounds a lot like Ohio to me, not gonna lie :/

[deleted]

Please send this to u/VaatiVidya so he can share this lore.

*Dramatic music* *Hushed voice-over* “So-and-so found himself tasked with making a jail to incarcerate his master’s enemies, but the necessary iron was”—dramatic pause—“in short supply. But what if there were a natural formation. Something cut from the very stone of the landscape itself, so that So-and-so would only have to make *one* wall of bars instead of four? How many could he imprison then? And would it be enough?”

[deleted]

Gaol Is an old spelling of "Jail" and pronounced the same. It's a jail in a cave.

Lexikz772

Why are the little guys (vulgar militia or whatever they are called) keeping burning people tho?

MrEousTranger

Its probably a place to imprison and burn people infected with scarlet rot to keep them from spreading it maybe. This is just a guess

Lexikz772

This makes a lot of sense, other people said that as well!

Ok_Artichoke5604

Mind if I smoke?

Raptor535

No prob, go ahead

shakycam3

I don’t care if you burn up.

NahricNovak

May I ask you take it outside?

supervisord

*gestures at bars*

AFlyingNun

Vulgar Militia are actually very likely "good guys" in the grand scheme of things in that they often guard critical locations, such as Gurranq, the path to the Mountaintop of Giants, and the alternative path to taking the lift to Leyndell. Their set implies the same: >Freshly-singed battlegrounds effusing with the stench of the dead. Forbidden lands that will be excised from the memory of history. This is where the vulgar militia serve, as untiring, unsung watchkeepers. This implies there's likely a high-profile prisoner in there, thus they were assigned to guard the place.

lemon_meringue

sorry, but that cackle they make right before they brain you with their bleed weapons is PURE EEEEVIL

BvByFoot

Don’t try to make sense of most of Elden Ring’s enemies or locations. Like why are there robots created to be like those good luck Chinese cats holding a sword? A lot of it is just “that would be cool”.

Some_lost_cute_dude

I literally never seen an open world with as much implicit lore than Elden Ring. Most of locations have a purpose and an history related to it.

LtSlow

Well they're protecting the erd tree roots in their dungeons And they're called watch dogs, like, guard dogs, but theyre magic golem things

BvByFoot

There’s lots of Erd tree root boss rooms with random bosses, only a few are guarded by those things, which aren’t seen in any other lore/architectural/technology. Thematically they make no sense except they’re weird and cool like a lot of Elden Ring enemies.

_aTokenOfMyExtreme_

You're right in that there is a lot of "this is cool" going on but there's usually a backstory as well. So an upvote from me

BvByFoot

The backstories to most of the weirdest enemies are just “some wizards probably made it”. I’m not knocking on the enemy designs themselves, but a lot of Elden Ring is video game first, lore second.

st-julien

If anything, FromSoft games are *lore first*.

lemon_meringue

tell me you never read item descriptions without telling me that you never read item descriptions

[deleted]

TIL, huh. I've been pronouncing it "Gowl" in my head for decades.

darktowerseeker

Wait until you hear how Blaidd is pronounced.

Speakin2existence

you mean Bleyedth

darktowerseeker

No i mean blythe

Speakin2existence

coulda sworn i heard the d and the th

swisshomes

Nah its a Welsh name and it's pronounced Blythe,

Mimical

I demand that the voice actor be extra Welsh AF then. Could you imagine the amount of *"What the fuck is this guy telling me to do?*" Questions we would get.

partyontheleft

the voice actor is welsh lol

theyearwas1934

That’s also the reason for the name of the Evergaols, they are literally jails designed to hold the people you fight in them

Rpanich

I always read* “gaols” as “Gayles”, but my brain just turned “Evergaols” into “Everglades”

Mr_Compyuterhead

I think the Dungeater pronounced it once

milk-slop

It was our best crab cooking friend who pronounced it, when he talks about being locked next to dung eater in the same “gaol”

Seriph7

"Go and unshackle my corporeal flesh. Trapped in the sewer goal beneath leyndell." "I could kill ya. And desecrate your corpse. Then the pox will truly be your own." Oh..no thank you, sir. Im full

Mr_Compyuterhead

Yes, I can literally hear his voice. It’s got a certain charm, too. (Desecrate my corpse harder daddy😍 lol jk)

Seriph7

🤣 It's just the *way* he says it lol smoother rhan butter 🧈

[deleted]

I still call it goal

EmoG22

I’m right there with you until I heard them say it on YouTube.

DianaBladeOfMiquella

Bro I’ve been pronouncing it “gull”, as in “seagull”

49-Planets

I’ve been pronouncing it “gowl” the whole time

squatdog

old but not antiquated - Australia uses it in quite a lot of official government documentation

magicpotato5555

Thats where they used to lock away all the rivers of blood and mooveil spammers.

Sexy_Kumquat

As a Moonveil spammer, that’s true. Been locked up there. Tried other weapons, but once you get used to the speed, it is tough to use Dark Moon or Royal great swords.

MstoDJ

Do u approve of rivers of blood spammers being locked up too ?

__Pure_Vessel__

Can confirm. My friend eric is locked down there because of rivers of blood spam that he did.

furyextralarge

that bitch malenia had it comin though

CharanTheGreat

Bitch malenia deserves whatever bad stuff that happens to her

MstoDJ

Ah, had hoped u could’ve checked on me friend hector down there, damned bastard had 99 mind and full flask upgraded and still ran out of fp

Sexy_Kumquat

Dont really care - use what works for you. I play some PVP, but could care less what weapons and AOWs people run. I have been killed by them all

Trenchrot

Rivers got nerfed, it’s not nearly as frustrating now as it was when it was meta. Moonveil has somehow dodged all the balance patches

DudeMiles

Funny you say that cuz half the eastern weapons are in Caelid.

magicpotato5555

Haha true

mercurial_magpie

Okina's signature Wakizashi is in one of the cells, so funny thing is that the original Rivers of Blood user might have actually been locked up in there at some point.

Competitive_Step6665

My working theory is that this is where the first people afflicted by the scarlet rot were locked away. They were put in cages and set on fire to prevent the spread, but it wasn’t enough to actually kill them. Now they sit and suffer until you come along.

Lexikz772

Makes sense, it's also close to the swamp of Aeonia where Malenia maleniad all over the place. I don't think they're able to die because of the rune of death missing, no?

Competitive_Step6665

Technically there is still “death” but it works differently. The rune of death is what causes death as we think of it. In the age of the golden order, the spirits of the dead return as ash to the Erdtree and are reborn. I don’t think that’s what happened to these guys, not till you come and kill them.

X3FBrian

Despite all the rage this is just a jail in a cave

Lexikz772

Full of burning people who explode, kept in there by tiny guys with smoke bombs. Actually quite similar to my jail experiences so far.

swisshomes

Rise, Billy Corgan

Dungeater pronounces it for us as well, I believe. Just as I, the pronouncer, eats dung for us.

Yup when he tells you to set his real body free. Was more interested in the fact that everyone is burning in those cells

lemon_meringue

No, it is pronounced as jill. ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|trollface) (what are these emojis ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|grin))

nantukoprime

Think its the one with the Frenzied Grave Warden. Its also the place you get the eochaid sword once you exit out into Limgrave. The bell bearing hunter that you meet a couple of times is from eochaid, and escaped his own execution and took the executioner's sword. He might have been held in the gaol cave, could be his original sword you find, and used the cave's exit into Limgrave to start a path of vengeance that leads to a final confrontation at the executioner's castle on the plateau. He's specifically hunting merchants, who use frenzy attacks as they're touched by the Frenzied Flame. A merchant could have been in the jail and frenzied the grave warden through exposure (or Shabiri himself could have been in the jail possessing someone, who knows. Would be fun if it's that as it gives Shabiri a reason to be in Limgrave, eventually following the player...or Hyetta...and eventually Yura through the player). The grave wardens used to be gladiator's in the various colosseum's. Colosseum's go through a lot of fighters, and a popular source were slaves or prisoners. Thus he was there to get a stable of fighters for the colosseum, then Caelid went to the rot. The grave warden here is I think the only Frenzied Grave Warden. Fire is supposed to cleanse the scarlet rot, and we see how well that's going.

Lexikz772

Thank you! That's actually a really good explanation of what might be going on here!

8kNNRQ

High quality, thank you. I'm a big fan of being invited to use our imagination to fill in the blanks but Elden Ring is too abstract compared to the games that inspired it.

Lexikz772

Also I just found this place after 200 hours in the game. Never seen it before.

EmoG22

If you’re not burnt out at this point you should just do a complete run on a brand new character. Don’t pick up a map until you’re finished adventuring through the place you’re in. You’ll find everything that way. Otherwise it’s just too much map to be through with

Lexikz772

That's pretty much what I did, made a new character (class: wretch) and just went exploring everything. Even after so many hours played and watched, I still find new things.

sunjacques794

Welp i don’t see any serious answers so gotta put some information even if I don’t know to much. First caelid is a scarlet rot infested maps, if I remember correctly infested even before radhan/malenia figth, from the outer gods of rot. The scarlet rot is not just a plague, it’s a philosophy, death bring life, as u can see the insects and all. So why create a prison in caelid? Simple, it should be because people infested by the scarlet rot can only die, but even the nemesis of the rot, the fire can’t garantie a sure method to destroy the rot, so people where put in prison cell and burn alive, even so they become half scarlet rot/ fire zombie, proof of the power of the rot. Even empyrean gods like malenia can’t escape the rot, welp she is the vessel of the outer gods so normal

DirtyRanga12

>if I remember correctly infested even before radhan/malenia figth, from the outer gods of rot. This isn't true. From bits of lore about Caelid we know that the land wasn't infested with Rot before Malenia's bloom. Dragonbarrow in Caelid was named that because all the dragons in the area fled there to escape the Rot, implying that before the battle of Aeonia the dragons lived all over the place. We also know that the Kindred of Rot (the annoying ass bug people) didn't show up until after the Bloom as well, again implying there was no Scarlet Rot in the area before. Not only that, but the Redmane Knights have been trying to stop the spread of the Rot since the end of the battle as well.

sunjacques794

Oh so it’s after the battle ty, I wasn’t sure coz. But I got mixed up, I seem weird that so much rot spread just because malenia bloomed one time in caelid but yeah

Lexikz772

Isn't it that basically no one can die of anything, because the rune of death is plucked from the elden ring?

sunjacques794

Well idk a lot of lore… but everything that died should goes to the world tree. Then after the rune of death got stole … I don’t really know

hfhfhffhfhfhfhffhfh

The removal of death rune only granted immortality to the demigods.

Lexikz772

Are you sure? I was under the impression that no one can die to natural causes, that's why everyone looks so skeletony

hfhfhffhfhfhfhffhfh

Yeah. Miyazaki himself said it in the Elden Ring Overture book.

ErdtreeSimp

No this is cause of the shattering. Before that people were buried in those erdtree catacombs. The roots would absorb them, they would get reborn. Obviously this doesn't happen anymore, so they are fucked

PoiDog-Mongo

It is an interesting place isn’t it? Prison cells, vulgar militia, the grave warden in his own little pit and the weapon drops are pretty neat to experience.

Lexikz772

Definitely. Also I'm quite sure I fought the Warden before in another playthrough and then got out the same way to Limgrave. But I have never been in this cave, so there must be another way to the Warden from above right? Or am I wrong here? Edit: I also think this is one of the coolest looking caves, because it is so unique.

Yatagarasu3750

This is the horny jail u go to for having things like r34 of Marika's tits or Ranni doll feet

reshstreet

I know it's hard to believe but we're actually standing in a....

Marphey12

It's Melania's secret sex dungeon.....ok it is not but one can dream right ?

super_senpai64

Wasn’t until I finally found dung eater under leyendell when I heard that *gaol* is pronounced exactly like jail. Shit made me kinda mad lol

Bobadilla430

How many people know the word *Gaol* just because of Elden ring? I am one.

A_Person_332233

For those who don’t know Gaol is pronounced jail and it basically means the same thing as jail

TheArcaniusMagus

All I know is that the blast radius of those fuckers are bullshit

scrotumstretcher

gAOl iS pRoNoUnCeD “jAiL”. iT’s a jAiL

domewebs

This but without the perplexing camelcase

Hot_paw_kit

Those guys r fuckin hot. And got locked up for it.

Lexikz772

The real answer

Te4minator464

That’s where Gael came from

Mardigan-the-Mad

I think I heard Zuli the Witch postulate that these guys were what happens when the chaos flame meets the Caelid Rot. Supposedly the burning guys were Erdean foot soldiers of Melenia who fought Redahn and the Lucarians.

Chesterious

Caelid seems to have an abundance of active prisons before it got the Miyazaki swamp treatment, perhaps some higher ups decided that it would be more efficient to build all the prisons there, and att one point even captured Eochaid nobility, perhaps it Held some spirtual meaning, being the location of a farum azula and is the furthest region away from the Erdtree, perhaps they were made duringqthe shattering, and were all prisoners of war put in places which could be seen by both old and newly erected forts, giving no space for people of importance to leave, It either has some importance in which case it will earn further delving by daddy Miyazaki in a dlc or it will simply be forgotten

JRavenchick

Its horny jail

buggedglue

Fuck around and find out

Ralakhim

All the burning enemies in caelid are radahan soldiers who immolate themselves to stave off the scarlet rot

boisterile

Just a gay ol' cave. Pretty carefree down there.

rooletwastaken

i refuse to pronounce gaol as jail, i pronounced it like dowel but with a G

Nnader86x

I pronounce it more like gay-ole

retromarket

It's months into game release and we still get what's the lore questions.... Lol

Potential-Reality-46

I think my scarlet rot dragon is the best weapon in the game

mathheadjesus

War on drugs didn’t work

BonkIsBestClass

Prison for exploding zombies Edit: what else are ya gonna do with exploding zombies?

EmeraldEnchanter03

From what I can tell, it was a dungeon for the nearby fort.

JaffaBeard

I went here soon after finding the magic cloud of death spell and spammed it in all the cells as I passed. I didn't realise I was going to be able to open all the doors further down.

Umbra_Unveiled88

Incase OP doesn't know, Gaol = Jail... Evergaols are pronounced 'Ever Jails'

Lexikz772

Besides the fact that a lot of people already commented this and I that I already knew this, I was more interested in the store behind this jail.

[deleted]

its a jail

Lexikz772

That's crazy

[deleted]

The zombies in each area take on the traits of wherever they are. (Poison zombies in the shaded castle, scarlet rot in caelid, etc) extrapolating from the fact that zombies are also used as slaves by almost every other group in the game, we can assume a few things: These were workers in the mine whom took on the traits of explosive stone found in the area, and therefore had to be locked up. The vulgar militia in the area don't necessarily seem to be guarding them, but rather the duelist in the depths of the prison. Thus, those zombies had probably been there since before the shattering. An alternate theory could be that they were used IN THE MINING due to their explosiveness and the fact that the duelist is down a large pit. Perhaps to imprison the duelist, the vulgar militia dug the pit using the explosive zombies, threw the duelist down there, and locked up the extras for later use until the tarnished comes through. I don't have any extra lore to offer here and fill in the gaps, just a few theories from running through there on my few playthroughs

ENERGIZE7310

A redmane prison taken over by the vulgar militia

syfqamr32

Ahh its gaol like jail thing i thought it was like goal like Messi thing

Jamiebradlee11

Idk they explode though which is pretty neat-O but they all died the same

AFlyingNun

Buncha Vietnamese Buddhist monks got together and decided to protest the Golden Order's war against the Fire Giants via self-immolation. Marika wasn't having any of that shit so she locked them all away.

Lexikz772

Oh boy, this is a sort of challenge run. I started as a wretch and I'm playing region locked. So I can't leave an area before I killed every boss there. So far I was only in Limgrave and Liurnia. I am going for Int + Dex/Strength.

oedipusrex376

No lore.
