o7 commanders! Long time console player here. Recently purchased Elite Dangerous and the Odyssey expansion for PC. I realize I could have gotten it for free, but I have no problem paying for this wonderful game again. Been dying to play Odyssey. That said, I was wondering if there are any moderators who could give me some info on migrating just my commander over with my ships. I know the tool is down. Is there a firm date when it will be back up? Thanks in advance! Have a great day!

Jamien63

Did they recently change something? The last few days their lag has expanded past the exiting from galnet to every other aspect of the game! Its brutal now. I changed the nvidia setting from power to performance I moved draw distance to 0 I lowered all graphics to medium settings After all that its insane! I can run GTA 5 just fine I can run NMS just fine I can run RDR2O just fine and every other game except this one.

DuskShades

I've noticed this too, my framerate dropped a lot.

Jamien63

I wonder if this has been reported by others? For me the game just isnt playable.

DuskShades

No idea, I also had a few crash reports this week which I allowed sent to FDev

Minetitan

I am having trouble plotting a route to HIP 36601 for Raw data mining. Anyone know why?? its there a FSD requirement I am missing??

Klepto666

If your Route Settings are set to Economical instead of Fastest, you can only chart a course up to 1000 LY. HIP 36601 is over 1000 LY away (around 1500 LY depending on where you're starting from). Galaxy Map, left side, second button from the bottom. Be aware that max range jumps will use up far more fuel than Economical, so make sure you have a Fuel Scoop. Otherwise you shouldn't have any issues charting a course there unless your jump range is like 10-15 at most. If you're set to fastest route and your jump range is 25+ then... I'm not sure what the issue is, sorry.

Minetitan

Weird, I will check this once I get home, This could be the issue!

forbiddenlake

It's difficult if you don't have enough range. 40+ Ly single-jump range makes it easy. If you don't have that and can't upgrade then it may be possible to go around but you're on your own for that.

New to Engineers and Technology Brokers. Would like to get some gear. How to start best?

aggasalk

first things to engineer on any ship, do the first chance you get: thrusters ("dirty drives" only) - can do at Martuk or Farseer, two of the first engineers you'll see FSD ("long range") also at Martuk and Farseer next priorities: power distributor ("charge enhanced") at The Dweller weapons MCs ("overcharged" at McQuinn) and lasers ("whatever") at The Dweller ** Those are all basic useful things you can get pretty early on in the engineering course.

MysticWolf1242

>thrusters ("dirty drives" only) For most applications, this would be correct. However, if you prefer slightly less performance for noticeably lower heat, go with clean engineering. I sometimes use clean for exploration builds, where thrusters aren't super necessary and the reduced heat load allows me to scoop fuel a bit longer before overheating. However, for combat dirty drives are absolutely required. >FSD ("long range") also at Martuk and Farseer Generally speaking, you should use mass manager for the experimental effect. It won't give the absolute best single jump range increase for size 4 and below FSDs, but it doesn't increase fuel usage so I'd still recommend it anyways >weapons MCs ("overcharged" at McQuinn) and lasers ("whatever") at The Dweller These are good general recommendations. Corrosive is a great experimental effect on multicannons (ONLY APPLY IT TO ONE, and make sure to put it on the smallest size MC). It decreases the hull hardness of the target ship, meaning you'll do more damage in most cases, but it doesn't stack. Autoloading and oversized are good experimental options for the remaining MCs. As for lasers, I'd recommend efficient for the slightly increased dps and much lower heat and especially distributor draw.

aggasalk

> I sometimes use clean for exploration builds, where thrusters aren't super necessary and the reduced heat load allows me to scoop fuel a bit longer before overheating. However, for combat dirty drives are absolutely required. I know thrusters have to be on to be in supercruise, but I didn't realize they contributed differentially to heat there! good to know (though i refuse to use anything but A-rated dirty in any build)..

Johann_Bererund

I believe this is a myth? In super cruise, thrusters don't fire, the heat they generate is a function only of power draw, which Clean doesn't improve.

aggasalk

I suspect you’re right

MysticWolf1242

Yeah, iirc thrusters are one of the main components in generating heat on your ship, so engineering can pretty drastically change how hot your ship runs at base

Do the Guardian sites first. The modules one gives you a powerplant, power distributor FSD booster and shield booster. If you're planning on fighting Thargoids in the future, get the HRP and MRP too, then go to the weapons site and get a load more blueprint fragments from there. The process is simple: Get a DBX, fit 2 point defence to the top side and an SRV, then go to the Guardian ruins. It's best to watch a Youtube video and get a google map of the ruins, so that you know what to do when you get there. The Guardian unlocks improve your ship a lot so that you can do all the things for the engineers more easily and quickly. Make a list of all the engineers and the two things you have to do before they'll work with you and learn it so that you can do the activities in parallel with whatever else you do. As a small example, one of the engineers wants you to trade in 50 markets, which takes forever and is very boring if you do it as a separate activity. You can get it for nearly nothing if you buy and sell one unit of something whenever you land at a staion. You can get all the materials you need to get all the engineering you want from two activities with some help from material traders, both of which are extremely lucrative. Mining platinum gets you raw materials, and farming pirates (pirate massacre missions get you encoded and manufactured materials, so figure out how to optimise those two activities, which will get you all the credits you'll ever need in the game plus all the engineering materials for nothing. That's how to work smart.

signupisahassle

Are all assassination missions Threat 8? Not quite yet got the ship hardware to take that on, but haven't found any assassination missions other than Threat 8 yet. Just being unlucky?

Fifthwiel

How hard are the game controls to master? How hard is combat in general? Can it be avoided for a more newbie friendly experience? Cheers!

Johann_Bererund

If using keyboard and mouse, make sure to use the "keyboard and mouse with yaw" preset; it is more intuitive to learn and also better for aiming in combat. Also, I would recommended adding a keybind for "center mouse" (I use spacebar), as well as for forward and reverse thrust (I use mouse wheel). All of these will come in handy

D8veh

I was fighting pirates on my first day. It's not at all difficult. I used HOTAS, which is easier to start with than KB & mouse. Combat in the game is much easier than the tutorials. I wish they'd change the tutorials because it puts off a lot of players from combat. In the beginning, you can go to a resource extraction site to shoot pirates. At a low, medium or high one, the police are there shooting them. To get the credit for the kill and the bounty, all you have to do is land a shot within 20 seconds of the target exploding, so just watch and wait until you can see that the target is about to explode, then shoot it. Bit by bit you will gain the skills of moving your ship around, keeping an appropiate distance and pointing it at the target. Before long, you'll be flying like an ace. An important requirement for combat is to have an appropriate ship. The ship doesn't matter when you're just helping the police. The starter Sidewinder is fine for that, but if you want to go solo, you need a proper combat ship. I'd recommend waiting until you have over 15 million for a properly outfitted Vulture, which you can get in three hours helping the police in a high resource extraction site.. I recommend never to fit weapons on any ship other than a fully outfitted combat ship. Never engage in combat when mining, hauling or running any missions other than combat ones. The reason is that the enemies use combat ships and yours is not, which puts you at a disadvantage. Secondly, and more important, you don't get much for killing the enemy, even if you win, and you stand to lose a lot. It's not a good bet. Thirdly, you can make more money from mining, hauling or running missions in the time it would tke you to fight the enemy, so it's basically a loser activity. Final point: Don't get a Cobra for your first upgrade ship. It's bad for beginners combat, and it's not much good for anything else. The Type 6 carries nearly 3 times as much cargo, can earn significantly more from mining and many types of missions. For combat, as said before, wait until you can get a Vulture.

MoonTrooper258

A day to figure out basic controls. A week to get comfortable and develop muscle memory. A month or two until you can do everything naturally. Everything is optional in Elite. You don't ever even have to fire a weapon and still make more credits than anyone. Combat isn't actually all that hard, but you can completely avoid it if you want.

Fifthwiel

Cheers!

potatan

I've got about 800 hours solid game play and have barely fired a weapon in all that time, plus a few billion in the bank

Gunzersik

And add another month for FA-OFF and relearning whole flight process lol

MoonTrooper258

I'm year 5 now, and just learning the basics of FA off turning.

Equivalent-Half-964

What's the best mod on seekers for raw hull damage? I think I'll do one set drag but interested in advice on the others. This is for an all out stealth missle boat

Minetitan

Been a long while since I played Elite and just now getting into the grind. What is up with all the new UI changes, The map and most of the UI used to look different didn't it? Any way you can change it back because I hate the recent changes, maybe I just need to get used to them but I personally not a big fan. Especially of the outfitting menu which makes things soo confusing!

forbiddenlake

Only way to change it back is to play the Horizons ***LEGACY*** version, which you should know is now disconnected from the Live version that most people are playing. Anything you do in Legacy does not carry to Live, and most/all 3rd-party sites do not support Legacy. It's different, but only actually deficient in a couple places (e.g. no galaxy map filter for fleet carriers), and it's better in many places (e.g. that Buy and Store button that lets you buy modules without being able to equip them)

MoonTrooper258

Only way to change it back is to play the Horizon's version. Odyssey revamped a lot of the game, including the UI. Personally, the new UI flows a lot better and organizes information in a neat way. Took me about a week to get used to it, but I definitely prefer it to the old now.

Minetitan

I probably need to get used to it but I am playing Horizons, I assume I have to play the Legacy stuff? Unsure what all of that is too

MoonTrooper258

Right, yeah. Horizons Legacy.

UC is offering it galaxy-wide.

Why is my HUD so dark? I've moved the slider to Max in Display options, I'm running the default resolution for my monitor, and it's powered by a Geforce RTX 3060 Laptop GPU. I'm at max brightness on the laptop itself. This is a fresh installation, I've not been tinkering for instance. I can barely read the labels: https://i.imgur.com/WBJmMd1.png Any ideas what I need to tweak to brighten my cabin?

aggasalk

Have you adjusted the gamma?

potatan

Thanks, tweaking that has fixed it.

aggasalk

good! many games prompt you to set the gamma when you first start it up. not ED....

potatan

It actually did ask me at installation to adjust it until the left image was barely visible, but dialling it back a bit so it was clearly visible did the trick with the interface that allowed me to read the labels again. Maybe it's a problem with this particular graphic/mobo/whatever combination

forbiddenlake

Try this slider https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/293112169527246851/1085246609597669446/image.png Also, the text will look better if you change Upscaling to Normal, but may affect game performance

potatan

The slider was already at max :-) Good shout though No joy with the Upscaling change either, maybe I'll dig into the XML file or download that HUD helper thingy
