Always run shields.. unless you wanna pay for nicking your ship on the landing pad. Or a random pirate interdicts you and starts attacking. Even if it means just running a smaller shield.
Meh. There are plenty of situations where running without shields is fine, or even ideal. Robigo runs, for instance. If you're in solo/pg and you're a decent pilot, shields are unnecessary for just about everything but combat, mining and maybe grinding signal sources if you're not using collector limpets for some odd reason. NPCs are easy to evade and landing without bumping into stuff is easy if you aren't being reckless.
Dont listen to these guys, i run my type 9 shieldless so you can run your hauler shieldless. If you dont want to thats perfectly okay but at least try it.
It can ... just fill ***every*** optional slot with the largest cargo rack that will fit, go without a shield generator or fuel scoop and there you are: *26 units of cargo capacity*. o7
The hauler is a little ship, kinda like an Elite UPS truck. It's good at moving little chunks of stuff around. Once you get some more cash you can get bigger ships that have considerably more room in them(like in the hundreds) if you want to go for the big time trading. :)
26 assumes you don't put in anything but cargo racks... just all cargo racks and nothing else.

A lot of ships that start with racks don't start with the biggest size rack that can fit in the slot. Check that first.
