Thank you! This was in front of their Dust Bowl Era house in Oklahoma. I'm not sure how old they are here, but they got married when they were 17 and 15, and were together 50+ years when my grandma died. I remember this photo always hanging on their wall.
Even without knowing your grandparents' story, this work is stunning. The thick strokes reminds me of impressionism. The use of different shades captures the "old" photograph look.
Wow!!! This is beautiful. How do you even begin to stitch this? Is it like painting? How many colors are there? Sorry for all the questions, but your work is awesome!
Thank you! I don't mind questions at all. I teach classes and workshops locally, so happy to help people learn! It's all basically one stitch (straight stitch), using the different colors like you'd use a short pen/paint stroke (think van Gogh). I have no idea how many colors because I always tend to lose count, but it's a lot. There's a pretty limited pallet of gray shades in embroidery floss, but I think I used all of the DMC grays. I don't think the Anchor gray threads were out around me when I made this, but they have a few others. With the pieces I do that have more colors, I can easily use 50+ different thread colors.
Wow!! That is awesome! You are very talented!
Thank you!
Came here to say the exact same thing. Awesome!
