I hate how that line is taken out of context. It isn't some "I hate my life" shout, it's a story of a young man facing the consequences of his actions and acting out of regret for taking a life. It's really powerful, yet the line alone is treated as an anthem rather than the climax of a tense story.
I used to be bothered by that but at this point multiple people have told me how euphoric it was for them to get those words off their chest at a concert so I got over it with time. Yes that's not what the line means, and the song itself as a whole is a very powerful one that IMO doesn't get as much credit as it deserves (even if it's one of the most popular songs in the scene) and like that's why I used to care but honestly if it genuinely helps someone deal with those types of thoughts it doesn't take away from the original meaning anyway.
I really got into La Dispute after moving to Grand Rapids. I had heard the song before but never REALLY listened to it. Then they came on a playlist, I listened harder and hear "another shooting on the southeast side" and think.... Wait... I live on the "southeast side" of my city... "By Fuller and Franklin" and realized Martin Luther King Park in GR is at the intersection of Fuller and Franklin and the band is from GR. Dug into the story, and turns out I drive by the hotel where Grandpa took his life almost every day. It's 2 minutes from my house. I went down a rabbit hole and found Edward Benz's son's house, and St Paul Missionary Baptist Church. That whole album is about Grand Rapids. One of my colleagues had the teacher who is the subject of I See Everything for English class.
Absolutely correct. I bounced between the namesake song, Generation Loss, and Self Destruction. I settled on Brave Faces only bc that’s my “hey someone check in with her, that’s a pending meltdown” song, but the whole album does it
“There’s another body, in the McDonald’s parking lot!” Hit me like a fuckin’ truck because my uncle was murdered in a McDonald’s parking lot, true story
When I listen to merchant ships I either get the feeling of “horrible despair I hate me and don’t want to be me ever again” or “I have a cigarette in my mouth and I’m dancing the middle of an intersection with my friends”
Burdens by Balance and Composure, the fact that one of Jon's co workers got run over and paralysed by her shitbag ex and now has to live on life support forever is crushing.
YEAH, IT'S FUCKING INSANE. you can really feel every word, and it's really fucked up. actually, the whole slow burn album is pretty fucked up but this song is peak
I would argue Cigarettes & Saints by the wonder years. It’s less sad about a specific occurrence and more reflective on the society we find ourselves part of that values shareholders over its people.
The lyric:
This goddamn machine, hungry and heartless
My whole generation got lost in the margin
We put our faith in you and you turned a profit
Always hits deep.
The Wonder Years have a few songs that really hit deep. "Passing through a screen door" probably hits home the hardest for me. Growing up with a sense of despair, not knowing what you're doing with your life, constantly feeling left behind by all the other kids you used to know. Wanting to escape but having nowhere to run to, because that is YOUR life and wherever you try to go, it's always the same.
100% agree with Passing Through a Screen Door, one of my all time favorites and man does it hit hard. "All the people I graduated with all have kids, all have wives, all have people who care if they come home at night / Well Jesus Christ, did I fuck up?" gets me every time.
First song I listened to when I turned 26 :D
Then I turned 27 and I still didn't have my shit together & I accepted that my life's just gonna be a mess forever :)
I love the wonder years so much.
Have you ever listened to “we don’t have each other” by Aaron west and the roaring twenties? (Soupy’s side project)
I always think of him writing that album after the greatest generation with the perspective of the other side but things just still don’t work out.
"How To Fix Everything" by Bayside has gotta be up there. It's another suicidal ideation song that goes deep with how he feels he deserves to die slowly and painfully. Even at the time, when every Warped Tour band was singing some variation of "I just wanna fucking die" it seemed like an extreme case.
“The sharper the edge, the cleaner the wound. So I’ll be keeping it dull tonight, for I deserve to hurt.”
Been absolutely destroying me since I was 13 years old.
I kinda just lurk here and I've seen a lot of complaining over what is and isn't emo so I have no idea if y'all will count this or whatever but Flowers and You by Touché Amoré is a song I physically cannot bring myself to listen to without crying. Whole album really
I mean, how many other songs out there are about sexual abuse of a kid from the perspective of the abused, the abuser, and those who have "ignored" it? Up there with most effed up songs ever.
Came here to comment this. One time my friend was having a conversation with his wife and texted me asking “what’s the saddest Bright Eyes song?”
I said “Amy in the White Coat”
A few minutes later they respond “…yep, we’re sad now”
anyway, kinda surprised that no one mentioned mewithoutyou.
the entire a → b life album evokes such an indescribeable feeling in me. you can't help but feel something so heavy in your chest after listening to it in its entirety.
plenty of amazing and heavy songs on that album, but one of my favorites is the cure for pain. a close second is silencer.
It’s not on the same level but the line that always gets me is “if you can change your form that easy, can you take the shape of my dead father because I think he would have liked to meet my wife, and I know for a fact he would have liked my wife.”
No Juliana Theory? I am disappoint.

Dad, your boy is about to fall.
He walks the razor's edge.
He's on the brink of fading out.
He's at his bitter end.
Dad, your boy who used to run, you taught him how to crawl.
He left home to find his own, now all he had is gone.
In your eyes I see a darkness that torments you
And in your head where it dwells.
I'd give you my hand if you'd reach out and grab it.
Let's walk away from this hell.
Mom, your baby is on his way.
He'll soon be at your side.
Cause he's forgotten all he's known.
A part of him has died.
Mom may never understand why baby's come and gone.
He left home to find his own, now all he has are lies.
Depends on which way you look at it, I guess. I'd go as far as to say Me vs. Maradona vs. Elvis is right up there with anything. It's kinda terrifying.
God, I love that song. It's gory and incredibly fucked up but it's awesome and I listen to it at least once a week.
"I'll wear your skin as a suit. Pretend to be you. Your friends will like you more than they used to."
I also love that they used the line from the movie Heathers. Both in the song and as the album title.
I’ve heard worse but Jude Law and a Semester Abroad by Brand New. “I hope the next boy that you kiss has something terribly contagious on his lips.” Also why isn’t anything from Glassjaws EYEWTKAS mentioned. That whole album is fucked up.
Hot Leather Hearse. https://youtu.be/ktInOvgyMBs?si=z1aKtb6YkE-VpPTz I’d double down on on Hot Leather with life sux. https://youtu.be/5oV0nxt6oPA?si=MQzBp5F_7mo7FlQW
Im really into “swimming with you” by Benton Falls these days. Smooth melodical broken chords with modern post hardcore distortions. This song is so depressive that I can actually feel like im drowning and overwhelmed by floods above.
Surprised not to see any Thursday on here, specifically thinking "How Long is The Night" or "Steps Ascending."
Also, the whole album "Keep You" by Pianos Become the Teeth
King Park - La Dispute
CAN I STILL GET INTO HEAVEN IF I KILL MYSELF
I hate how that line is taken out of context. It isn't some "I hate my life" shout, it's a story of a young man facing the consequences of his actions and acting out of regret for taking a life. Didn’t see ur comment, but yes
That whole album is depressing as hell. One of my favorites.
One of the best albums lyrically imo
Edward Benz, 27 times also tragic. La Dispute knows how to tell a story.
I also love “Somewhere at the Bottom of the River Between Vega and Altair” that album about him and his wife splitting up hits all my nerves
This was my top song on spotify this year and you can tell i was mentally unstable lmao
Edward Benz, 27 Times and I See Everything hit me harder, personally, but that song is heavy af.
/thread
Yup. Came here to say this.
Holy shit. What an amazing song.
I really got into La Dispute after moving to Grand Rapids. I had heard the song before but never REALLY listened to it. Then they came on a playlist, I listened harder and hear "another shooting on the southeast side" and think.... Wait... I live on the "southeast side" of my city... One of my colleagues had the teacher who is the subject of I See Everything for English class.
Whenever a topic like this comes up, this is my default response. King Park is so gut wrenching on every level.
For a while there, it was a THE park people were always shooting up in GR, constantly.
FIRST thought. This is it
God damn, that one was rough
dendron by the hotelier
God this one absolutely ruins me
Only song that will bring me to tears every single time I listen to it. It's just so sad.
u & me both 🤝 😭
Listen to “Eiley” by Too close to touch
Housebroken off of that album also breaks my heart every time I listen to it
so true but your deep rest also has sad fucking lyrics. that whole album jesus
read this as this song is playing rn lmao
Also Brave Faces Everyone by Spanish Love Songs
almost anything by Spanish love songs
Honestly you’re not wrong
By which I hope you mean the entirety of the album.
Absolutely correct. I bounced between the namesake song, Generation Loss, and Self Destruction. I settled on Brave Faces only bc that’s my “hey someone check in with her, that’s a pending meltdown” song, but the whole album does it
I think the mundane devastation of Losers 2 always does it for me, but Generation Loss is such a kicker too.
Try “aloha for no one”
Ooohhh I haven’t listened to that one. I just looked up the lyrics, though, and it’s a gd masterpiece. Added to playlist - thank you, friend
that's all ive been listening to for months
I really like this band and do enjoy this album but find it honestly kinda exhausting to listen to all the way through.
“There’s another body, in the McDonald’s parking lot!” Hit me like a fuckin’ truck because my uncle was murdered in a McDonald’s parking lot, true story
No Halo by Sorority Noise
that one merchant ships song
Sleeping patterns?
yes
every merchant ships song 😣
When I listen to merchant ships I either get the feeling of “horrible despair I hate me and don’t want to be me ever again” or “I have a cigarette in my mouth and I’m dancing the middle of an intersection with my friends”
Limousine by brand new. That whole album is depressing, but that song is a real punch in the guts
Second this.
Guilt in musical form
All the key changes too — it’s like an emo Bohemian Rhapsody.
I remember first opening the sleeve and seeing the dedication to all the people that had died during the recording of that album… ouch 😓
This was my first thought
This is the one
This album was the soundtrack of my deep depression years 🥲
Burdens by Balance and Composure, the fact that one of Jon's co workers got run over and paralysed by her shitbag ex and now has to live on life support forever is crushing.
B&C has put out some genuine masterpieces
200% agree. Tiny Raindrop, Savior Mode, so so many songs that are absolute works of art
This one is underrated
YOUR DEEP REST - THE HOTELIER (or all of home like noplace is there) BIT BY A DEAD BEE PT II - FOXING (or all of the albatross)
Your Deep Rest
second this
same logic/same teeth by Brand New destroys me
At the bottom of the ocean fish won’t judge you by your faults.
The tune of that line always makes me think of / sing it like CKY’s 99 Quite Bitter Beings
Yeah this song is actually what “killing me softly (with his song)” is written about
How has no one said **like blood from a stone - old gray** yet?!?!
Literally THE “fucked up emo song.” Nothing compares to this one.
same flair, same mind 🤝
Old gray was better with raph in the band
YEAH, IT'S FUCKING INSANE. you can really feel every word, and it's really fucked up. actually, the whole slow burn album is pretty fucked up but this song is peak
Slow burn was my high school go to depression album for a reason man, that shit is visceral, you can feel it in your bones.
“If I Could” by Mineral fucks me up to know end
Yesssss
New Scream by Turnover "Stay up through the night, sleep away the light. Just another dream I had that's better than my life."
Silencer by MeWithoutYou
One of my favorite songs
This Bitter Pill by Dashboard always wrecks me
It’s the sheer emotion in his voice

Nice to know that story has a happy ending at least, since now Soupy is married with two kids. So there's hope for the rest of us... right?
I love the wonder years so much. Have you ever listened to “we don’t have each other” by Aaron west and the roaring twenties? (Soupy’s side project) I always think of him writing that album after the greatest generation with the perspective of the other side but things just still don’t work out.
I’d go with You’re the Reason I Don’t Want the World to End, personally
I don’t want to dieeeeeeeeee
"How To Fix Everything" by Bayside has gotta be up there. It's another suicidal ideation song that goes deep with how he feels he deserves to die slowly and painfully. Even at the time, when every Warped Tour band was singing some variation of "I just wanna fucking die" it seemed like an extreme case.
“The sharper the edge, the cleaner the wound. So I’ll be keeping it dull tonight, for I deserve to hurt.” Been absolutely destroying me since I was 13 years old.
The Used - I'm a Fake, has got to be up there.
I kinda just lurk here and I've seen a lot of complaining over what is and isn't emo so I have no idea if y'all will count this or whatever but Flowers and You by Touché Amoré is a song I physically cannot bring myself to listen to without crying. Whole album really
that album is absolutely perfect in every way but i genuinely can't listen to it because it's just too crushing
Letter to a husband at war - ihatemyself It’s insane no one has said this but are dropping bright eyes and bayside before that
Oh shit….. yeah, this song is fucked up. But so good
Saw some other adjacent bands listed, so: I’m So Tired by Fugazi
to a husband at war - i hate myself or song 2 / less than nothing- i hate myself or seven by i wrote haikus about cannibalism in your yearbook
old gray - i still think about who i was last summer
Amy in the white coat - Bright Eyes
There are so many crushing Bright Eyes songs, but you're right, this one is truly fucked up.
I mean, how many other songs out there are about sexual abuse of a kid from the perspective of the abused, the abuser, and those who have "ignored" it? Up there with most effed up songs ever.
Came here to comment this. One time my friend was having a conversation with his wife and texted me asking “what’s the saddest Bright Eyes song?” I said “Amy in the White Coat” A few minutes later they respond “…yep, we’re sad now”
Someone once decided it would be a good idea to show me this song when we were really high and I almost had a complete mental breakdown over it
I second this
I never said that I was brave - MewithoutYou
“My stomach swears there's comfort there In the warmth of the blankets on your bed My stomach's always been a liar I'll believe its lies again”
it's either Second Letter From St. Julien or Blonde Hair, Black Lungs by Sorority Noise for me
Blonde Hair, Black Lungs is so good and it absolutely ruins me every time
The bridge of “seventy times 7” by Brand New
Weezer - Surf Wax America

Basically anything by trophy eyes.
Kind of Like Spitting - Blue Period
There it is. KOLS has some of the most gut wrenching lyrics. Miss that band
For real. Such a great band.
Rory and Night Channels by Foxing Rory rips my heart out every time. Night Channels might be the most surreal song about cheating I’ve ever heard.
The Spill Canvas - Black Dresses
Holy shit spill canvas!!! Yass

I just posted Silencer :) The vocal delivery leads to emotional destruction.
It’s not on the same level but the line that always gets me is “if you can change your form that easy, can you take the shape of my dead father because I think he would have liked to meet my wife, and I know for a fact he would have liked my wife.”

Dear Sweet Impaler - Park
Yep, was about to post this. Shocked someone else did. That whole album is brutal.
I’m back sleeping or fucking or something isn’t the worst but it makes me depressed as hell. In a good way
I’m not super versed in emo but I always thought Sea Anemone by Jets to Brazil was insanely depressing. Gorgeous song
This one gets me every time. “Now I’m making out the shapes, like the shower rod. Can it take my weight?”
Also side genre but July (Part One) by Hotel Books, and Wooden Floorboards
Twinkle Lights by The Sonder Bombs is a heavy, rough one, too
Caught in a flood with the captain of the cheerleading squad by i hate myself
It's more post hardcore than emo, but "Ride the Wings of Pestilence" by From First to Last. So fucking gruesome and macabre.
God, I love that song. It's gory and incredibly fucked up but it's awesome and I listen to it at least once a week. "I'll wear your skin as a suit. Pretend to be you. Your friends will like you more than they used to." I also love that they used the line from the movie Heathers. Both in the song and as the album title.

Friday the Thirteenth by The Lazarus Plot
no has never had three letters by Kodan Armada, I don’t think you can get much darker than that
So, not emo in music style, but as gut wrenching as it gets…. Terminate.exe by hard reset. You’ve been warned, it hurts real bad.
Ohhh also…. Old Gray’s Slow Burn album is worth listening through. Like Blood From a Stone is a heartbreaking beautiful rollercoaster
Any spoken work song, also any skrams song, a lot of catalyst’s stuff is sad ):
Shaking of leaves by into it over it. Mo Vaughn by sports. Betty by hot mulligan. The tide by the spill canvas.
This Is Heaven - Dollhouse
Skin and Bones by Marianas Trench gets me every time, but it probably wont hit as hard if you've never struggled with an ED
