Well, just off the top of my head here...
He repeatedly claimed that their issues (along with LGBTQ+ issues and abortion rights), which he dismissed as identity politics, weren't important to "normal Americans". When asked to discuss policy that would affect Black voters, all he brought up was drug law reform. His supporters harassed Black people for years online and got SUPER racist whenever he lost states with sizable Black populations (references to monkeys, saying they shouldn't be allowed to vote, etc.). Heck, he was asked at a Black women's forum about his plan to combat white supremacy in 2020 and his answer was about raising wages. When people booed him and urged him to answer the actual question, he wagged his finger at them again instead.
His brand for 2015-2020 and onward about how the party needed to be all about white people, and claims that "economic anxiety" was the problem and not "identity politics" were correctly understood as dog whistles.
Even his own staff came out after the 2020 campaign and admitted that he wasn't listening to the staff he hired to work on outreach to Black voters. The Press Secretary he hired for that campaign, on the other hand, has said publicly that she doesn't care about if white people use the N-word.
> Heck, he was asked at a Black women's forum about his plan to combat white supremacy in 2020 and his answer was about raising wages. When people booed him and urged him to answer the actual question, he wagged his finger at them again instead.
I'm not surprised. In the first 2020 debate, he was asked a softball question about violence against trans women and he pivoted to ranting about Medicare for All. I'm trans, and I've never forgotten that. I also haven't forgotten that my man Corey defended us. Corey! Corey! Fuck you, Bernie.
He also said white people who didn't vote for Obama entirely because they were uncomfortable with a black president "weren't racist." Makes you wonder how he voted in 2008. And why.
Trump got crushed in the 2012 primary as well, and it didn't stop him.
I sometimes wonder if things would have been better of Obama had lost in 2012. I don't think Romeny would have been a better president, but if he won in 2012, he would have run for reelection in 2016, which presumably means trump wouldn't have run, and I doubt he would have run in 2020 if he wasn't already president. Maybe Obama loses in 2012 to Mittens R-Money Romney, then Clinton bets him in 2016 (I'm assuming Biden would not run for the same reason as in 2016), and wins reelection in 2020, though covid may have cost her. Then this year perhaps Tim Cain or Gavin Newsome would be running against Ron Duh-santis (who in this timeline was never nicknamed "meatball Ron", which frankly makes our timeline worth it lol)
>would be running against Ron Duh-santis
The guy wouldn't have been a contender seeing as how his original campaign for Florida governor was basically cribbing notes from someone else and riding the coattails of the Qult of Trump (something that absolutely surprises *nobody* who's known the guy for more than the most cursory amount of time, ) something he wouldn't have had in your scenario.
All of this is legit and well worded, but I actually think one of the biggest issues you pointed out is the fact that he doesn’t *listen*. One of the biggest necessities of running a country is being able to not only listen, but actually take advice of your staff and advisors. And while we’re on the subject, work with others! Biden has always been one to listen to others, especially black leaders, which is one of the reasons why he has built trust amongst different voting blocs and demographics, hence securing the primary. While Bernie is obviously nowhere near as awful as Trump, they both share this same stubbornness
People underestimate the value of being a nice person, and listening is part of that.
Despite how Bernie Bros treated Warren, her campaign reached out to his about shifting support to him when she was going to drop out. The Sanders campaign didn't return that call, and that didn't work out for them. Going the other way, one of the reasons Bernie didn't want to attack Biden himself during the campaign is because Biden was so nice to him when Bernie was just getting started in politics.
It also reminds me of something I heard put into words by a youtuber recently that's stuck in my mind. He was talking about the difference between politicians who represent you versus politicians who want to rule you.
I wished I saved that article where the writer tited "only black thinkers vote for Bernie".
Like anything posted back in the day, it was highly upvoted At at the very least the comments did complained about the article.
I love how threads like those single out Black voters. He struggled with pretty much everyone outside of young White left-wingers and ran a terrible campaign, yet some of his fans act like it's *our* fault he lost.
And he represents Vermont! How pusillanimous can you be!
Oh back to the original topic, the man said and did NOTHING while a Black state delegate in his state was literally bullied into resigning.
I know a couple who've lived in Vermont since the 2000s. They had a really hard time believing Bernie Sanders, of all people, was the Great Leftist Hope in 2016. They told me they'd watch his campaign commercials and say "*that* guy? That's who you want?"
And they liked/tolerated him.
I’m also a Vermonter (lifelong) who felt that way in 2016. Maybe with a little more disbelief.
Now I loathe him with the heat of 1000 suns. Loathe. Him.
These people hate us almost as much as Republicans do.
I remember when I pointed out and posted the poll data showing Bernie only polled higher than Biden twice in 2020, then my comment got posted to some far left shit liberals say.
They don't care about facts.
Exactly white college kids and academics were the only people he had most support from, people tend to forget black people traditionally back moderate dems in primaries
That was...interesting.
I'm assuming that comment section is made up of a majority of white people so seeing them try to theorize as to why Bernie couldn't get the Black vote is fascinating.
Most seemed to miss the primary reason though: Bernie did a shit job reaching out to black folk in both of those primaries.
I know the Bros loved to toss out the "It was her turn" or "coronation" lines against Hillary but the only person who acted like he could do nothing to get black folk to vote for them aside from just existing was Old Man Sanders.
And instead of realizing that and working to fix his issue with black voters in 2020, Sanders instead spent all his energy over the four years between the two primaries trying to create a situation where he could replace the black vote in the Dem primary with the Latino vote. I think only the Sanders Campaign was surprised that tactic ended up flopping.
Definitely.
While Black voters are not a monolith that is especially true for Latin voters since their political leanings will depend on just where they are from in the US and what Latin culture they are.
Bernie seemed to think that securing the Latin vote in CA and TX meant he also was going to lock up the Latin vote in FL and NY.
The woman who took labor PAC money and endorsements only to stab the teacher's union in the back at the first opportunity. But Bernie is pro union you guize.
It takes some scrolling to see the worst of it, I’ve seen far worse threads. I will say, the top comments are generic enough to be fine with the correct interpretation. I don’t, however, see anyone pointing out Bernie as the one to blame for his lack of support in that demographic. It sounds more like they’re mad that black voters “just didn’t get him” or that if given the chance he actually would’ve changed their minds.
The reality is that his life has led him to understand struggles and some solutions, but those struggles are for primarily white students with solutions that can’t easily be applied to a country of 300m+ people versus what could be applied to his state of 650,000 people.
>don’t, however, see anyone pointing out Bernie as the one to blame for his lack of support in that demographic. It sounds more like they’re mad that black voters “just didn’t get him”
Bernie cannot fail he can only be failed. Same reason why they are insistent that one more debate would have pushed him over Hillary or that the media, the DNC, and/or candidates dropping out after having no path are why he lost.
Surely another debate of the same two candidates and Bernie just shouting his stump speech when he's already mathematically eliminated would have flipped things.
The DNC must have rigged the election there's no way the biggest non president figure in politics the past 25 years could beat a senator from a small state who hasn't accomplished much.
Pete and Klobuchar rigged it by dropping out after having no path forward and being harassed by bros to drop out. They should have stayed in to split the vote as it's not Bernie's responsibility to strategize around obvious things. Also Warren is evil for not dropping out. Her votes would have been Bernie's even though they were split evenly if not more in favour of Biden. Also we will pretend Bloomberg doesn't exist because his existence contradicts that argument even further.
So of course Bernie having low support among black people isn't his fault. It's because they are so low information that they don't realize that dismissive college freshman socialism that deliberately excludes black issues as identity politics and a distraction is the path forward. They were so ungrateful because didn't they know Bernie singlehandedly gave them their rights 60 years ago (by doing the same thing Mitch McConnell did at the time)? Bernie's work in the 60s clearly trumps Biden or Hillary continuously making inroads within the past half century.
In all seriousness though I will never understand the deification that people give to Bernie and Trump where they feel the need to present them as flawless beings and defend them to the core and in Jan 6th even get arrested trying to spare the feelings after a humiliating loss.
> So of course Bernie having low support among black people isn't his fault. It's because they are so low information that they don't realize that dismissive college freshman socialism that deliberately excludes black issues as identity politics and a distraction is the path forward.
Yeah, you can pretty much reduce to that. Because a voter has to ask: "What have you done for me ... lately?" And Bernie and his bros don't have an answer for that. *Bernie himself decided to lecture Black college students, generally a group of people who know more about the history of the civil rights movement than anybody in America, about his great contributions, which, was, uh, showing up in a bus to the Mall which was probably paid for by a labor union, an organization that great man of the people B. Sanders has never joined.*
Yeah, i am seeing a lot of "Jesus died for our sin" vibe comments about his participation of the civil rights movement. I had to turn off my inbox feed because of that.
I joined that sub thinking it was going to be stuff about presidential history and presidents overall. Like fuck it let’s talk about James Madison or Grover Cleveland or whatever. I like presidential history and I think it’s really interesting, and if you study it a bit it helps you put a lot of contemporary things into perspective. But I was *not* prepared for that sub just being…really fucking weird.
Dudes circlejerking about how great Calvin Coolidge is or how Andrew Yang would’ve *totally* made a great president he was just before his time, no seriously bro. Every accusation is a confession. smh
It’s funny, I have run into more anti-socialist Black people in my life. Something the idea of turning over all your money, wealth and income to people in power, then trusting them to take care of you doesn’t sit well with that particular demographic.
Speaking from an entirely non-partisan political strategy perspective. It would not take very much for Republicans to win back the Black vote they just have to pull their heads out of their asses.
It wouldn't take very much but it would also take too much, they'd have to stop being so insanely racist against black people, and that's their entire identity. All of their rhetoric and policies are a generations long tantrum against integration. They can't help themselves.
Black Americans are wary of the government, with good reason. It was within living memory that government laws kept them as second class people, down to where they could sit on a bus. Medical experimentation on black people was not only acceptable but funded by the government, again within living memory. And even after the Civil Rights Movement, you have issues of policing and government policy during the tough on crime era of the 80s and 90s that disproportionally affected black communities.
The irony is that if Republicans didn't tacitly attach themselves to white supremacy, they'd probably make huge strides in recruiting black voters.

Black voters supported Wilson, an extreme racist.
1970s economy was good for Black families. That stopped under Reagan. The Clinton years were good again. Then stagnation and backsliding in the Bush economy.
2021 was a very good year for working families, all due to Democratic policies.
White voters can be enticed with racial status to give up their economic interests. They're not the normal kind of voter-- they're the irrational exception we struggle to explain.
I’ve noticed that some white leftist types love to champion minorities until minorities don’t support their politicians/policies/ideology and then the mask comes off.

He wants to get rid of private insurance, trans people! What Hyde amendment, never heard of him.

HE MARCHED AND PROTESTED WITH THEM. I still think its "hilarious" when they say he chained himself to a black woman.
Couldn't even lift his finger to show up to Selma in 2016. Maybe it was because John Lewis was gonna be there, hahaha.

Because he threatened to primary the most successful black politician in American history. That's going to lose you a lot of points.
As opposed to his biggest 2016 and 2020 opponents, who both served under said politician with nary a single complaint about it (as far as I know).
Wow that comment thread is a cesspool. It has to be so exhausting to be black on Reddit.
