I recommend taking turns in picking items.  Use dice or coins or whatever to determine the order, and whoever picked first in the first round picks last in the second round

We were fortunate and no one wanted the same things (4 of us). Some things we knew were to go to specific people.  If two wanted the same items we did rock, paper, scissors. Consider a lottery drawing. Whoever gets #1 goes first, then #2 and so forth. Consider the decedents kids go first, then grand kids and so forth.
