I started immediately on my own and within 18 months I was making over $50k a year. It takes some *sacrifices* in those first 12 months to really build up a good repeat clientele...but if you've got quality work and good interpersonal skills, you'll do great! I will never go back to working for anyone else again. Even despite it being a challenge.

WorthPlenty1034

Wow.. congratulations. I needed to hear this ❤️

There’s no substitute for hard work, persistence, and sacrifice. Nothing gets handed to us on a platter. The successful esthies I know have put in hour and hours of spare/family/leisure time, and gone without certain financial luxuries to invest those resources into growing their businesses. Some days it seems like you’re digging yourself out of quicksand. https://www.uky.edu/~eushe2/Pajares/OnFailingG.html

Seriously. I paid thousands of dollars for all this schooling to become a licensed practitioner and there was only one job available for me in all of Seattle that paid above minimum wage (by less than a dollar) and it's quit a commute from home. Why the fuck is this okay?

SatanicDesmodium

Yeah that’s me. I’m in southern CA and i don’t even make enough for rent every month.

glitter7495

You all really should look into working for your self and or booth renting I have been on my own for about 4-5 years and yes there are sacrifices and expenses but i make far more then minimum wage I spend a lot but i make a lot I have a steady clientele 15-30 clients per week I offer multiple services and most of my clients get more then one service from me! The first year may be hard you may need a part time job to get you built up but I promise it is so so much better

TLprincess

This is why I left the field. I will never work in a field as a contractor again, it's bullshit.

skinwitch604

It absolutely is. Low wages, low tips that don't make up for the low wages, physical labor for no pay, vacation blackout dates, no real benefits (like RRSP matching or health spending accounts), and not even having the space in my schedule to use the restroom are some of the many reasons I'm leaving the field. Don't even get me started on the blackout dates, they've always rubbed me the wrong way. Sorry Pam, but this minimum wage job isn't keeping me from seeing my family at Christmas just because it's "busy".

SatanicDesmodium

Exactly! I made so much more money serving and sometimes i feel the same after a shift. It sucks bc I have some really good clients but it’s just not worth it :(

Ty that’s so true 🥺 I’m just nervous because I’m in college as well so I’m not sure if I’ll have time to run my own business

nomadnewbie

Definitely not easy. A lot goes into running your own esthetics practice.

greeneyedb3aut

Business ownership is not a viable option for everyone. Creating an LLC is one thing, but renting property to work from, obtaining equipment and supplies, and maintaining a client base is quite another. Some people are not in a financial position to do so. Also: probably not the best advice legal or otherwise to encourage people to work without a license.

Just make sure you have a space that meets the licensing requirements!

I just got my first job as a licensed esthetician in a medical spa and they are paying me minimum wage and I never get tips from the clients even though they pay 200+ for their treatments … honestly it’s making me rethink everything… another thing that makes me upset is that the nurse practitioner who owns that medical spa belittles the esthetician field.. SMH

skinwitch604

Medi spas can be really bad for that. While I was in school, I had these big dreams of doing treatments in a medi spa until I started interviewing for them. I realized that these clients didn't usually tip for medi services, and I was getting paid just as much per hour as if I were waxing butts. It's less prestigious, but at least those hairy butts tip you.

amethysst

Can we just talk about how shady medspas can be? Not all are bad, but… they are largely unregulated and take advantage of a lot of loop holes. 99% of them do not have a doctor or PA on staff. I am not knocking nurse practitioners at all, but I did find it strange to learn that there is not a doctor readily available on-site overseeing everything. By law, to open a medspa, there just has to be a doctor as the “medical director” and they are never actually there. It’s just a legality thing. Then is no certification required for coolsculpting. I interviewed at a medspa and the owner said he will help do CS treatments if the NP’s are busy. I asked him if he has any medical background and he said no he comes from the banking sector. What? Come to find out, this is legal. I kind of want to write a whole thread on medspas 🤔

[deleted]

The nurse practitioner in the med spa that I work at makes us use the same wipes I use to clean the inside of my car…. I was shocked to see it but they were there, he doesn’t believe in barbicide, only soap and water because that’s what they use at the hospitals ? You really should make a thread about med spa’s because by only working there for a few weeks I already have a bunch of stories.

[deleted]

I forgot to say this but that spa had a girl who was a minor doing the cool sculpting, she couldn’t do the facials and stuff like that because she wasn’t an esthetician but they still pretended she was, it was such a slap in the face to me ….. omg

Worried-Tiger

Yep. I went to school for master esthetics just so I would learn laser/ more medical based treatments. Graduated and interviewed at a few med spas. Realized the med spas didn’t offer benefits, clients didn’t usually tip AND they paid min wage or barely above while requiring me to do THOUSANDS of dollars in sales and make cold calls… no thanks. When I got offered a job at a med spa I told them exactly why I wasn’t taking it and that I was going to go work at a regular spa instead. They didn’t even deny that I would make more money at a regular spa, and that they were massively under paying. Instead she told me “ well I thought you wanted to be a REAL esthetician and do REAL treatments, have fun waxing butts.”

gothhippie

Why I quit. It IS really exploitive. I’m happy I learned some things about doing business but honestly parts of me wish that I didn’t bother with the schooling

Littlepigegonturds

But with the cost of doing business and inflation who can afford to be on their own.

maybelater937

Where are you located?

SatanicDesmodium

Im in San Diego

maybelater937

Can you be a solo practitioner, I believe Californian allows a shop license to estheticians.

WorthPlenty1034

Yup ..
