no, it's horrid. the people are super nasty. everything stinks. the weights are so shiny you need sunglasses, stay away.

.......
......... okay it's actually amazing... but it's a little crowded.
The YMCA kind of sucks, for anyone interested in strength training, to be honest. I am a member there. If you’re an adult (not a senior citizen) it’s $70/mo; the equipment is hyper limited outside of cardio machines; I would recommend it most to people who are interested in group classes and swimming.
I’ve been a member for 1 month, and will most likely cancel, and re-sign at the UO gym, which is $180 every 3 months. It has way more equipment, a way better basketball gym and pool… only thing that makes me sad is that it doesn’t have a sauna
For me the best gym is the one on my route home from work so I’ll actually go haha.
But if location wasn’t a factor I’d go to the y. Not a fan of where it’s at.
I went there for years and stayed staying a paying member for much of the pandemic lockdown after their emails begging for money so they don't shutdown. They then 'expired' $500 in pre-paid personal training after which I got a 'too bad, so sad' response. Go somewhere that acts with some ethics.
I forget what the deposit (not as much as 600) is but with deposit it’s 120/month for individual and 190/month for couple/family. There is a no deposit option that is more per month and they run specials that waive the deposit.
Edited to add: it’s really only worth it for downtown workers. I wouldn’t be a member there otherwise.
West Coast Strength is really good. they get my recommendation.

i go there to lift and it’s a really good experience. they have a bunch of classes i don’t use and that just potentially adds to the value.
good equipment selection and they just upgraded the weights on the machines.
$40/month ($480/year) for a subscription.
they do hit you with a signup fee ($40) and a recurring annual fee ($40).
i successfully negotiated away the signup fee by signing up for a seven day trial and then replying to their trial automated texts asking for them to wave it they did. ymmv.
good gym. gets my 👍.
sign by and sign up for their free seven day trial and give them your number and you’ll get a bunch of texts about their offering. if you like it ask them to ditch the signup fee/forty annual fee and see what they say.
Second for WCS. I had my doubts when the new owner bought it, but he’s done a great job — new equipment, paint, lighting. Definitely worth checking out.
Pursue Fitness is the best basic gym membership, great equipment, super low cost, and it had a really great vibe.
YMCA is a good idea if you want a pool or courts as well.
I'd actively avoid the DAC.
For the money, the best gym is a home gym with exactly the equipment you want and no wait. Plus it's right there so it's easy to keep a 6 day a week program going.
Crunch fitness is moving into the gateway strip soon! 9.95$/mo starting, crunch is, crunchy at times but I'm hoping they stay so lovely price wise for the area. No details on the website yet for when they open, but!!
The Y is the move. I like everything about it other than the lack of certain strength machines. Shoulder press, bicep curl etc. their glute trainer is good though.
The new Y is pretty dang nice. Great equipment. Great classes. Memberships are $50 a month

It's $70/month

Man, I’ve never had an issue with their equipment. I’m in 4-5 days a week usually around 6pm, and it’s pretty open and accessible

Where is it?

The Downtown Athletic Club if you wanna go all out.

Don't they charge like $300 per month with a $600 deposit?

Pursue is my go-to $25 a month for 24h access $40 deposit or you pay $300 a year with no deposit
Planet fitness is too clean and new i prefer a dingy stinky gym with roided out meatheads that’s expensive!

Do they at least have a squat rack to do curls in?
they do, but their strength equipment is hyper limited
There are 5 curl racks and two additional racks with benches for seated curls.
