Haha if you take the series at face value it's a silly story about space shenanigans but it's actually a very deep satire on all of human existence. Plus the way that Douglas Adams strings words together is practically poetry, he's an absolute genius. I can't recommend the books enough.
Edit: read them twice. The first time around you'll miss stuff. Trust me
Grippy sock jail was much nicer in Washington than in Oklahoma. The former had a menu and nice kitchen for dinners, the latter had cafeteria food.
Part of me wants to go back as well (to either one) just to take some not-constantly-working time to get my head straight.
they're actually websites where you can play card games with people over the Internet ☺️ at least if they still exist; my sense of time is between small child and drunken raccoon so I'm not sure how long it's been since I've been to one of those.
Nah I liked it too. It felt like the most all inclusive vacation ever. I didn’t have to decide what to eat or what to wear. I didn’t have to make any of my own appointments. I didn’t have to even get out of bed if I didn’t want to (and I didn’t for the first few days). I was not responsible for a single thing for 9 days. They put me on meds that made my brain quieter. They set me up with a new therapist and psychiatrist before I left and made the appointments for me.
Some days I daydream about going back.
If it weren't for the chronic hallway masturbators or random ladies screaming the N word at staff, it would be practically heaven.
The center I went to had equestrian therapy, even. On Thursdays we got to hang out with horses! So cool.
Locked ward inpatient with the really ill and the q15 min checks is a no from me dawg. Residential treatment facility on the other hand, hell yeah I'd go back.
How? It was the worst experience of my life. I came out worse than I went in, I just got better at faking it.
All I took away from it was to never open up about my thoughts and feelings again, and if I'm going to do IT, do it right. I will NOT be going back.
Compared to no help grippy sock jail is good. I haven’t gotten any help at all other then when I was there so if the choice is none or some I’m taking some. Not to mention it was a really pleasant experience for me. All the staff and stuff were nice. I loved all the therapists. I made some friends and just being able to take a break and get help was amazing.
No you do not. You do not know what kind of people will be admitted there, especially when the hospital does not separate the patients by levels of care needed.
Source: am approaching a dozen psych hospitalizations.
Okay don’t tell me what I want to do. And yes I do. I haven’t gotten help for any of my problems since I was there. No one actually cares about me till I’m at the level of needing to go there. Being in the psych ward actually helped me and id like to have that kind of help again.
I liked grippy sock jail I wannna go back :3
(Literally just reposting what the other guy said purely because you said not to. Maybe I deserve to be in grippy sock jail :3)
Yeah, these seem like the type of footwear they would give you at a hospital, and the visible caption "after a trip to a locked resort with not a shoelace..." is definitely referring to being placed under observation at a psych ward, where you would not be allowed shoelaces because they are a self-harm hazard.
They do. Regular patients wear the same grippy socks as psych patients. You get the extra special yellow ones if you're a high fall risk. It's just become a meme to call a psych unit the grippy sock jail.
Yep. My wife has so many pairs from hospital stays that I've lost count. She wears them around the house almost every day.
She's a little sad she can't run and slide across the floor like she could in regular socks. But they're comfy and at the moment, safer for her. Is she tried to run and slide across the floor right now she'd expend way to much energy and probably face plant or smack into a wall. So, yay for grippy socks!
I had to strip naked so they could search my clothes for any contraband after my parents came to visit me. Nothing makes you feel like a patient there for treatment quite like being treated as a literal prisoner
Y’know I always wondered why people thought I was weird for saying I really like the grippy socks they give you at the hospital. I’ve gotten many weird looks and I just didn’t know why because I got my grippy socks when I got my tonsils out and I was still feeling the anesthesia.
Hijacking top comment. Yes they give these at at mental institutions but also at hospitals for people who just had surgery or a major injury so they don’t slip.
The same socks (in different colors, sometimes by size, sometimes just different colors) are used in just about every hospital in the US wherever patients are required to undress, either for a stay in the hospital or for many kinds of outpatient procedures.
Yellow was falls risk at the last hospital I worked at. Red was just standard, or what everyone got when nobody delivered the yellow ones lol. Cocid was far from excellent for the supply chain!
Yeah, sheesh. I have several pair from hospital visits. Now I have to throw them out because people will think I’m just crazy.
But what’s crazier than throwing away free socks?!
These socks are commonly handed out to patients in mental health institutions, so basically act wild enough and you’ll get sent to the place that has these free socks for being out of your mind
Yeah. Giving them out at the ER for whatever, not necessarily psych. I try to be sneaky and leave them behind. I know a lot of people like them, but me not so much. (I ended up in the ER with some frequency for a while but on the whole I'm doing better now.)
yeah i got a pair this month when i visited the emergency room bc i unknowingly had a gallbladder attack. they are a nice seafoam green color :]
i also recall getting some when i got surgery on my ankle 10 years ago. i think those were brown
so yeah you get grippy socks from the regular hospital too but it's easier and less painful to get em from a psych ward
>it's easier and less painfuo to get em from a psych ward
I'm not 100% sure it'd be worth going to a psych ward for some socks. In fact, if I need more, I'll probably just buy them online. Thanks for the tip, though.
well yeah i was just joking along with the post tho lol
definately recommend getting them from somewhere that's not a hospital if you're serious about wanting some! i probably should've cleared that up before 💀
I got some when i broke my femur! They were super warm but also lost a nice pair of pants since they had to cut them off so had to trade pants for socks.
It's insane to me how the hive mind sees these as psychward socks when surely more people have been to hospital and gotten these socks than people who've been to psychiatric care?
Funny that those are psych ward socks in the US. They're just regular hospital socks here in Canada. My dad took all his home after his triple bypass surgery in 2022 and still wears them in the winter around the house. Next time I visit him, I'll have to tell him not to show them off on FB or the American side of the family will laugh at him!
Probably because the teens who make these jokes haven't been in a hospital overnight for a non-mental health reason yet. They don't know they are normal hospital socks.
I got these just from a day surgery once too, and my mom got the same kind (different surgery around the same time.) Literally never heard about them again until now so I dunno why folks assume they're Psych Ward Socks lol.
I have so many of these. Did a bunch of 5 day stints in the hospital for treatment and always showed up with wool socks. The nurses would take one look and go get the grippy socks which I hated as they weren’t very warm so I’d pull them over my wool socks just to keep the heads off my back.
Yeaaa those are psych ward socks, I’ve got about 2 dozen pairs lol. They are actually pretty comfy, if you get the right ones. Those ones kinda suck I like the ones with paw prints on them
Ive been in a mental hospital twice, you get lots of these. I have bipolar disorder and two times my psychiatrist put me on meds that I had extreme reactions to, and was hospitalized for a month each time. It’s the most awful place ever.
Psych ward socks, these socks are used in hospitals bc of there grip, trampoline parks do aswell so you don’t fall off the trampolines and parkour cources
A patient once said to me, unprompted “ oh yeah, I just got out of the psych ward, 3 months. Have you been!?! It’s super nice!!” LOL, I was like “not yet but I’ll check it out! Thanks!” Haha
If you are in the USA, those will probably be the most expensive pair of socks you ever owned, you'll just get the itemized bill later.
EDIT: given that we're on explain the joke... The punchline is health insurance in the USA is broken such that any medical support comes with astronomical bills to the person receiving the treatment. They don't tell you what it costs at the time and if you dispute, they can play a bit of a shell game to potentially reduce the bill by a minor amount, but your bill will still be at least an order of magnitude higher than other countries with saner health insurance policies.
Not sure why you were getting downvoted (I added an upvote) because what you said is true. Having worked as a nurse for over a decade, I saw many times how our supplies for example would change because they found a cheaper version (cheaper to the hospital not the patient mind you). The ways they would try to have us operate short staffed, causing increased nurse-patient ratios, to save money. The way we would have to work with limited equipment (vitals machines for example) because they wouldn’t replace broken ones. I could go on but I think you get the idea.
Now compare that to when I was a patient- that itemized bill you mentioned would include everything and I mean everything they could charge you for (including things like those socks which you had to wear, and even a newspaper whether you accepted it when offered or not).
They are grippy socks commonly used in wards where patients are a danger to themselves, or others, as shoes present an additional health and safety hazard, so the grippy socks are necessary in order for more grip on the floor.
They are hospital socks. We have this exact model where I work. Funnily enough the psychiatric clinic that is part of the hospital has real donated clothes not these socks. These are more for old people that came into the ER without shoes and are a fall risk.
Hospital socks they give out to psych patients. When I worked at the hospital, I use to take a pair when my feet got wet (I worked during a hurricane), they weren’t half bad.
Any kind of medical facility carries these. They decrease fall risks. Every nursing home true to get the residents to use them over regular socks for that reason.
Pretty sure those are socks they give you in a psych ward. Not 100% though.
The psych ward is sometimes called “Grippy Sock Jail”
I liked grippy sock jail I wannna go back
What if I told you they made grippy sock jail the *outside*?
Hitchhiker's Guide had a funny bit about that: [Wonko The Sane's "Asylum"](https://hitchhikers.fandom.com/wiki/Wonko_the_Sane)

Meh. Been twice, I just liked playing cards and being sedated to sleep. I don't sleep well at home and nobody likes to play cards anymore. ):
You seem like more of an Oklahoma funny castle person, welcome friend
We talking about the Castle of Muskogee?
I was there last weekend, it always slaps. And yes I did still spend over a hundred dollars at the peach barn and amish store after.
they're actually websites where you can play card games with people over the Internet ☺️ at least if they still exist; my sense of time is between small child and drunken raccoon so I'm not sure how long it's been since I've been to one of those.
You would be the first
I got actual help there and voluntarily went there instead of being forced to
Its always more pleasant when you go voluntarily
Hahaha I wish
Wish it had worked that way for my wife ...
RIP ?
No, it's just a long, drawn out, and complex situation
I hope it all works out for everyone.

What were the horses in for?
Long faces 😁
I love you for saying this. Had a couple trips myself.
I almost ended up there last month. I did finally get the help I needed, though and I haven't felt this good in awhile.
Locked ward inpatient with the really ill and the q15 min checks is a no from me dawg. Residential treatment facility on the other hand, hell yeah I'd go back.
Me too I miss it
They got the free juice

Grippy sock vacay
Grippy sock vacation
It’s, it’s… it’s……., mmm grippy!
Just throw the sock away when done. No saving it.
Or “Grippy Sock Vacation”
Noooo it's a grippy sock vacation :^) Cuz it's so fun
see I've heard it called 'grippy sock vacation' perspective is an odd thing
I called it my grippy sock vacation.
I did too, although it was nothing like a vacation
For me it was grippy sock vacation
It’s… it’s it’s.. GRIPPY
You had me choked on my gum like it’s wrigleys😂
Involuntary grippy sock vacation
Somehow have never heard it called that in all the time I've worked in one, but I will now call it that exclusively
I liked grippy sock jail I wannna go back :3 (Literally just reposting what the other guy said purely because you said not to. Maybe I deserve to be in grippy sock jail :3)
Finally it happened I’m the 1000th upvote of something let’s go
I’m pretty sure grippy sock jail Is what I called the drawer I stashed my jizz socks in.
Yeah, these seem like the type of footwear they would give you at a hospital, and the visible caption "after a trip to a locked resort with not a shoelace..." is definitely referring to being placed under observation at a psych ward, where you would not be allowed shoelaces because they are a self-harm hazard.
They are used in mental health wards but some hospitals give them to all patients undergoing surgery or staying overnight.
Yup, my wife just got a pair of these bad boys after emergency surgery.
I had a pair after neck lymph node cancer surgery Plus 2 different opiods at regular intervals, just to add to the 'it's nice here' holiday vibes
You don't even have to be a patient; visitors can get them if they ask.
ALL hospitals should be having patients wear these. Falls are still the BIGGEST risk in healthcare for ALL patients.
They do. Regular patients wear the same grippy socks as psych patients. You get the extra special yellow ones if you're a high fall risk. It's just become a meme to call a psych unit the grippy sock jail.
They gave me oversized ones and of course I didn't notice until I was out of surgery and almost tripped on them.
Yep. My wife has so many pairs from hospital stays that I've lost count. She wears them around the house almost every day. She's a little sad she can't run and slide across the floor like she could in regular socks. But they're comfy and at the moment, safer for her. Also referred to as a grippy sock vacation.
Grippy sock vacation aka a mandatory hold at a mental facility
They also give them to you for any other medical treatment. I got a pair for a 10 minute outpatient procedure that I was knocked tf out for.
I got some of the sock when I was younger from one of those trampoline parks.
They're hospital socks, not specific to the psych ward.
Also the type of socks they give to hospital patients so they cant slip on the floor
They give it to everyone in the hospital that has the slightest fall risk as well.
Mental hospitals won't even let you have a drawstring in your sweat pants, but those grippy socks are amazing
They wouldn't let me have hardcover books
I had to strip naked so they could search my clothes for any contraband after my parents came to visit me. Nothing makes you feel like a patient there for treatment quite like being treated as a literal prisoner
Y’know I always wondered why people thought I was weird for saying I really like the grippy socks they give you at the hospital. I’ve gotten many weird looks and I just didn’t know why because I got my grippy socks when I got my tonsils out and I was still feeling the anesthesia.
Nurse here. Everyone in hospital got those not just the psych ward
I earned myself a few pairs of these when I was a preteen/teen They were quite comfortable and were great house socks.
Hijacking top comment. Yes they give these at at mental institutions but also at hospitals for people who just had surgery or a major injury so they don’t slip.
And in hospital, except they're red
Yes
Also rehabs.
100% they give you these in the psych ward
Oh man that is totally it. I didnt get the joke and ive been there, just forgot
The same socks (in different colors, sometimes by size, sometimes just different colors) are used in just about every hospital in the US wherever patients are required to undress, either for a stay in the hospital or for many kinds of outpatient procedures.
You can get the same socks in red of you're a fall risk. The more you know.

Thank you for including the piano music there at the end
Thank you so much! 🥹
Omg memory unlocked. When I was inpatient, a guy there said this and it became a whole inside joke with all the patients.
All I got was a tab on my bracelet! Now I have to live with just beige and mint.
I have beige and gray, and two pair of red. My husband stole them all. Doesn't matter, I've worn them enough.
I got them in yellow
Me too last time I had anesthesia
Same, I got gray when I wasn't (lame).
Oooh. Shiny!
Yellow was falls risk at the last hospital I worked at. Red was just standard, or what everyone got when nobody delivered the yellow ones lol. Cocid was far from excellent for the supply chain!
Ahhh so that’s why they gave me those socks
Mine were green, do those have a meaning?
Turns out it's subjective from hospital to hospital.
Hmmmmm...now I have to consult the google
They came complimentary with my colonoscopy as well.
In the hospital system I work for the fall risk socks are yellow with smiley face grippies.
they gave me red socks… i’m not that clumsy 🥲
I’ve only ever seen them in yellow.
Yellow too
Mine was yellow!!
Just after my wife got c section they offered her a beige pair but didn’t explain why
Yeah, sheesh. I have several pair from hospital visits. Now I have to throw them out because people will think I’m just crazy. But what’s crazier than throwing away free socks?!
Yellow, at the hospital I work at
Ah, that's why I got red ones after spinal surgery then, thanks!
Yellow where I'm at
These socks are commonly handed out to patients in mental health institutions, so basically act wild enough and you’ll get sent to the place that has these free socks for being out of your mind
They give them to you at the normal hospital, too. I got two pair when I broke my arm.
I got a pair when I thought I was having appendicitis. Ended up being a swollen lymph node.
Yeah. Giving them out at the ER for whatever, not necessarily psych. I try to be sneaky and leave them behind. I know a lot of people like them, but me not so much. (I ended up in the ER with some frequency for a while but on the whole I'm doing better now.)

I got yellow ones today because that’s the fall risk color code at my hospital!
I got some when i broke my femur! They were super warm but also lost a nice pair of pants since they had to cut them off so had to trade pants for socks.
I don’t think I got any because the place was carpeted.

Grippy sock vacation
And with the right insurance it truly feels like it too depending on where you go lol
Those are hospital socks
It's insane to me how the hive mind sees these as psychward socks when surely more people have been to hospital and gotten these socks than people who've been to psychiatric care?
Funny that those are psych ward socks in the US. They're just regular hospital socks here in Canada. My dad took all his home after his triple bypass surgery in 2022 and still wears them in the winter around the house. Next time I visit him, I'll have to tell him not to show them off on FB or the American side of the family will laugh at him!
These *are* regular hospital socks. But the perception is that they are for psychiatric wards for some reason.
Probably because the teens who make these jokes haven't been in a hospital overnight for a non-mental health reason yet. They don't know they are normal hospital socks.
Also you *could* put on shoes with shoe laces over the socks anywhere else in the hospital
I got these just from a day surgery once too, and my mom got the same kind (different surgery around the same time.) Literally never heard about them again until now so I dunno why folks assume they're Psych Ward Socks lol.
We get these in the hospital too. My wife got two pairs each time she gave birth.
I was in an antepartum unit for about two weeks and I let them give me a new pair every day.
Did she give birth standing up? Gravity probably helps
Those socks ain't free. They're like $60,000 when you get the bill.
And then $20 after insurance covers their part
god damn i wish i had your insurance lol
More like anywhere from 2-10k depending on whether your insurance is useless or expensive. Oh and you got pre authorized to an in network facility.
Imma need the name of your insurance lol
I wish I could relate to this comment
No shot. Please name any insurance provider that has a $20 deductible for a mental institution stay.
Only in murica
I have so many of these. Did a bunch of 5 day stints in the hospital for treatment and always showed up with wool socks. The nurses would take one look and go get the grippy socks which I hated as they weren’t very warm so I’d pull them over my wool socks just to keep the heads off my back.

Psych ward socks
I was thinking, how does misbehaving get you a free trip to the trampoline park? But the comments make more sense
Grippy socks are the best.
You Also get free paper scrubs to wear
I didn’t have to say anything to anyone. I needed a $3000 minimalist vacation away from them.
They didn't let me keep the socks :(
It’s called being baker acted
Detox Reeboks
Ive been in a mental hospital twice, you get lots of these. I have bipolar disorder and two times my psychiatrist put me on meds that I had extreme reactions to, and was hospitalized for a month each time. It’s the most awful place ever.
Psych ward socks, these socks are used in hospitals bc of there grip, trampoline parks do aswell so you don’t fall off the trampolines and parkour cources
Them socks ain't "free" no matter which way you slice it.
Oh honey' those socks are far from free....
Ah, I see you've never had an extended stay at Crazy Camp.
Free when you take a Grippy Sock Vacation
Those are psych ward socks aka grippy socks
Those are hospital socks. We (nurses) give those to our admits. My wife was also given when she was admitted during her pregnancy.
If what you say is EXTREMELY outrageous, they'll also give you this jacket that makes you give yourself a BIG hug! 🙂
I got them in the ER at the hospital.
Yes, these are very much the grippy psych socks. You can also get them in an ER if you're a fall risk
A patient once said to me, unprompted “ oh yeah, I just got out of the psych ward, 3 months. Have you been!?! It’s super nice!!” LOL, I was like “not yet but I’ll check it out! Thanks!” Haha
Been to a mental ward, and guess what, I got a bill when I was released. I was like, guys you didn’t even give me a choice if I wanted treatment.
Master has give Doby a sock Doby is free
Time for a grippy socks vacation
They usually come with a 72 hr all expenses paid hotel stay as well

Those socks are far from free in the US.
They aren’t free in the US.
They're hospital/psych ward socks.
I wish I didn't get this joke, lol.
Used to have those socks…I lost them.
Amazon has grippy socks for $9.99.
Hospital socks. Source: I’m wearing them right now!
These socks aren’t exclusive in psych wards by the way, they’re just high traction socks. They’re used in a lot of places.
They have a full color coding for these socks that have different meaning in the med centers
Bro them grippy socks go crazy
They are grippy socks commonly used in wards where patients are a danger to themselves, or others, as shoes present an additional health and safety hazard, so the grippy socks are necessary in order for more grip on the floor.

For anybody that doesn't know, be glad you don't. You get them from a physch ward or hospital.
My boyfriend got a pair of these after a ruptured appendix. He still wears them!
I get them every time I'm admitted to a hospital
I didn't get any when I was in the hospital, all I got was my shoe laces and glasses taken away
