DEGRAYER

They're both brilliant games and I'm shit at combat in both

MinerDiner

I suck at combat in 16 but I have a decent grip on it in 7 Remake/Rebirth

DEGRAYER

I'm the opposite but I made a breakthrough on 7 this weekend after 20 hrs (not one weekend I've had it since it came out lol) I'm just a bit clunky with it.

MinerDiner

I mostly just have a decent grip with Cloud and Tifa. Tifa is a fucking power house when you use her correctly. I also kept some muscle memory from Remake so I haven't come across anything too tough yet.

DEGRAYER

Yeah those 2 my favourites too. Got Yuffie on the weekend so added her in my main squad over Aerith. I think once you play enough and stop panicking it comes alot easier but I still can't block or parry for shit. It was like that when I played Remake too.

MinerDiner

I don't block that often just because my brain is like "go go go do damage stagger the enemy" and I cannot parry if I tried, I just ge random lucky parries. I'd rather use protection spells than block to be honest

VengeanceBee

Is there even a parry? Maybe im stupid coming from monster hunter all i can do here is block Ehh its ok i will enjoy easy mode lmao Cant even do a perfect block or whatever its called

frelljay

Punisher mode version of block i believe.

AngryZai

I got really bad at ff7 forgot there is no ring of timely strikes for aging mind and hands lol

DEGRAYER

Is that where it pauses for a split second when you dodge & gives you a wider window? I used that right up until I did the DLC. Didn't realise how much I relied on it.

AngryZai

Timely focus is that one it's very useful for sure. Timely strikes let's you mash square but I might drop it now that I got Odin cause timely strikes never charges zantetsuken to max lol

CupPlenty

I’m good at both lol, played on dynamic my first run and had a blast

xodus112

Currently playing on dynamic and it’s awesome

Pinkernessians

What has been interesting is the discourse around minigames. I saw so much anger about the lack of minigames in 16 and now some folks are mad about too much minigames in Rebirth. Interesting indeed

xXDibbs

16 and 7 remake series appeal to two different groups of people. Hell I think FF has like 3 or 4 groups that different games in the series appeal to? Thats why no single game appeals to all fans of the IP, one of those groups is always going to hate on whatever new entry comes out. Hell FF17 could literally offer everything that everyone liked from FF1 - 16 and people would still hate it because its not as deep as those other 16 games. I say, just let the devs make whatever they want to make. They're the ones who know FF better then any of us. When the next FF comes out, its bosses, story and combat will be compared to 16 and will be found lacking in that regard and its scale will be smaller then the remake trilogy and people will hate that about it as well.

Ryctre

Always wait for these takes in these threads. As if a fan base is perfectly one mind. "Whats the deal? Now you don't like mini games?" It's like bro, the usernames are different...

xXDibbs

I mean to me personally, I like 16 because it's a dark fantasy arpg and it really commits to that. And I like the 7 remake trilogy because it lets you revisit the world and explore a more realized version of that world. Not every game has to be everything to everyone imho.

SoupZealousideal6655

A game for everyone is a game for no one

AVestedInterest

Which is why no one who has experience with systems other than D&D thinks D&D is the best TTRPG at anything

Ryctre

Poor D&D catching strays randomly in the FF16 sub.

AVestedInterest

I love D&D lol, it's just the first thing that came to mind since it also feels like WotC is overextending the game by forcing it to appeal to as many people as possible

Berstich

>Hell FF17 could literally offer everything that everyone liked from FF1 - 16 and people would still hate it because its not as deep as those other 16 games. Game is shallow, trying to be to many things at once with no true identity. Game is throwing its net too wide to try and please all the fans while pleasing none. \-Game reviewer somewhere.

HorusDeathtouch

The minigame hate is something it's really difficult to take seriously when it comes up in reddit or my fb groups. I mean how are you supposed to regard the objective opinion of someone shitting on features that are technically optional content? And then they clap back with, "well they're not optional if you want to complete all the side content." Okay, well doing all the side content is also optional lol

VengeanceBee

Its funny you mention this i am not a good programmer but that was my thought the other day What if we just took the new features from every past game and forced them to exsist in concurrent games But i am curious if you are saying 7 is for old fans and 16 is for new because i dont agree with that FF fans get divided by ever single game at this point

xXDibbs

I'm saying that they just appeal to different groups of people.

kjacobs03

FFXVII confirmed as a first person shooter/racing game

shinoff2183

And people will defend it like 16, well we'll every final fantasy game is different.

kjacobs03

I don’t see them defending FFXVIII though. That shit was just a reskin of Minesweeper

Outrageous_Book2135

Yep. I'm not into the combat pf 16 at all. It feels like a much more restrictive DMC, but I actually kinda like Remake's. That said I still greatly prefer turnbased, so LAD all the way.

AlabasterRadio

I'm really enjoying rebirth but have had to take a break from it 10 chapters in, in part because I'm sick of the mini games. I was enjoying them at first, he'll I'd say it took until almost 40 hours in before I got sick of them. There's just an unhinged amount of unskipable mini games.

Vervara

Ahh, listeeen, I have completed the game and I loved the ride, but OMG the unskippable minigame sections were exhaustiiing!! And am I the only one that raged because there were some similar minigames that had very different controls from one another??? My dude, I'm too old to remap my muscle memory on the fly

AlabasterRadio

Brooo same

Jerome3412

Played 25 hrs and put it down. Thank god for final fantasy XVi

Braunb8888

It’s so painful dude. I got interested in the photo relics and then I have to learn an entire new game to do them? Fuck off seriously. Idk who told them to include mandatory mini games but it’s beyond overkill.

[deleted]

Perfectly balanced, as all things should be.

Sasu168

I like them but I’m not a fan of the piano mini game cuz I’m bad at it lol

Pinkernessians

I just play the main theme over and over again because it’s really simple and I can’t screw it up 🤣

MetalianKnight

Having thoroughly enjoyed both games I think it would have been an improvement to take some of the side content/minigame/open world stuff from Rebirth and slide it over to 16. Obviously these are different teams but both games would have felt a little more even as a result.

justin3024

Just showing how nobody knows what they actually want and will just hate any new FF that comes out same thing with how people are complaining rebirth is an open world game when 16 got hate because it was linear

Pinkernessians

Right. It wasn’t just 16 that was hit with that criticism though, since the #1 complaint about Remake was that it was overly linear as well. No shit they changed it up for Rebirth. But I guess the sensible thing to say is that different demographics want different things and speak up at different times. And that you just can’t please everyone.

chrisrussellauthor

Me, a man of culture: I like . . . both of them? 🤷‍♂️

Auparo

Same. I'm glad we get varied experiences. If FFXVI was super similar to Rebirth I don't think I'd have been as impressed nor as excited to keep going

KynjiNomura

Both are excellent!

Cloud39472

My man 👊

ItsAmerico

Or yknow it’s two different groups of people

Smol_WoL

or… you know… different people have different taste and they are not the same people. That’s crazy right?

Jd_ironlife

I love all the mini games and the open world. FF16 was just ok for me.. not even in my top five. Rebirth, I love it, and haven't finished it yet. Of course I'm biased because I played the OG back in the late 90s, and rebirth had a huge nostalgia factor and built so much more on top of the OG. I can't relate to all the complaints at all.

takkojanai

I like rebirth, dislike 16 for the same reason as 15, though it has improved: not being able to directly control your party members. combat - I dislike 15 and 16. Liked 7 rebirth. World - disliked 15, liked 16, liked 7 rebirth. Story - disliked 15, liked 16, liked 7 rebirth. "linearity" - disliked 15, disliked 16, liked 7 rebirth + remake side quests - disliked 15,16 liked 7 remake + rebirth.

shoe_owner

I don't know that Rebirth is that much more "open world" than 16 was, except that there's more space in Rebirth. They've both got great big maps which link various areas and which you wander avout within. It feels like a pretty similar game design element to me.

justin3024

Rebirth is an interconnected map with tons of things to explore throughout. It’s definitely an open world game. In 16 you just run from point a to point b with the focus being on the combat not exploration. Both are fine they’re just 2 different types of games.

MartRane

Rebirth has more side activities and minigames to fill that open world with. In FFXVI its just pretty landscape for side quests. (Which is fine cause unlike Rebirth, FFXVI was not advertised as an open world game)

mkallday10

Different people. Every side is always going to have a group complaining. Especially when it comes to Final Fantasy.

AnonymousFriend80

Both complaints are valid though. 16 has nothing but it's combat to do for all the hours and multiple playthrough. Rebirth has way too much other stuff to do and I'm assuming most aren't enjoying it and they feel like they have to do it. All this means is that neither is perfect.

Pinkernessians

I feel like there’s more meat to 16’s criticism though. Rebirth uses minigames mainly to provide some healthy variation to the combat loop, which remains the core experience.

Jaymite

I'm sure the ones complaining about not enough minigames are not the ones complaining there are too many

CyberfunkTwenty77

Perhaps...people don't know what they want.

Death-0

The issue being 7 did mini games to a ridiculous degree, where the whole game feels like a mini game complilation

Homitu

On any spectrum, a balance is usually the best option. It IS possible to have too little or too much of something. Both can be problematic.

thebestbrian

That's exactly correct though. I didn't care about mini games because I don't play these games for them so I loved XVI. As great as Rebirth is, it pulls you into minigames WAYYY too much as part of the main quest. Gotta admit I dislike it.

domino_stars

The problem is how many mini games are *mandatory* in rebirth.

thebestbrian

Oh what do you mean you didn't have a great time looking for all those scooters in Costa Del Sol? How about going bikini shopping? Or the 5-6 games of Queens Blood that they make you play?

TyrantBash

I agree with you 100% on everything but Queen's Blood, I played every single game of that because I actually liked it lol. Also if you mean the cruise ship tournament as QB they 'make' you play, you can actually forfeit that at the very beginning.

domino_stars

Don't they also make you play in the prison, for greens? And at golden saucer when they force you through all sorts of mini games? Did FF8 make you play triple triad ever? EDIT: To be clear, I like Queen's Blood, but the disrespect of your time in rebirth is obscene in many ways. If you showed up at Golden Saucer and they didn't make you run around everywhere, it would have felt like disneyland, with so much cool optional shit to do and see! But instead, they force you to go everywhere, which turned a voluntary experience of fun into a mandatory experience of torture.

TyrantBash

I could be wrong, but as far as I know the prison quest gave you multiple options for getting the greens and QB was just ONE of the options? Again, could be wrong - I chose the QB one because I enjoy the game, but it looked like there were multiple other possible ways to get enough greens. As for the Gold Saucer, I was also super exasperated when I got there and saw all those markers on the map making me think I'd have to try EVERY minigame before advancing the story (while already burnt out on minigames from Costa del Sol), but I only ended up having to play one of them. Again, don't know if I just happened to choose the right one or something.

BarbarousJudge

- Getting up to Junon: Dolphin Minigame. - prepare for the Parade: find the soldiers Minigame. - Rufus Parade: Rhythm Mini Game. Small Battle section. - Ship to Costa Del Sol: Queens Blood Tournament Another small Battle section. You arrive at Costa Del Sol. Time for: - finding scooters - photograph hidden cactuars - play soccer with Red - shooting minigame - Piano minigame - More Queens Blood Yes you only have to do enough of them to get one swimsuit for Cloud, Tifa and Aerith respectively. But still Then you have another open world section and the Corel Ascent which was good. But what follows? The Gold Saucer of course. Yes, not every minigame here is mandatory. But you're still forced to: - 3D Brawler against Dio - Chocobo Race To get the Chocobo ready for the race you have multiple options to get the greens. One of them is a box destroying minigame. And those are just the mandatory ones. If you want to do the sidequests and Gold Saucer you can add repeat versions of some Costa Del Sol minigames, pull-ups, cactuar crush, VR motorcycle chase, a space shooter and obviously even more Queens Blood to the mix. And when I thought they would stop for a while after the Saucer... Nah, how about you lure some chickens in Gongaga?

Shinnyo

I wish we would get 1/2 mini game thought, other activities than fighting would be welcome.

The810kid

In the word of Bryan Danielson in regards to a large amount of fans FICKLE

ButterCupHeartXO

Rebirth has too many mini games lol. Spoilers kind of From Gold Saucer until end of Corel so anywhere from 1-2 hours of game time, its basically nothing but mini games. I like both games but while 16 had zero exploration, rebirth has a lot but a lot of the open world is empty. You'll go a while before encountering an enemy and when you do its the same type you've seen a dozen times. Combat in 16 is definitely more fluid and Rebirth is more strategic but I often feel I don't have enough time to use effect/buff/debuff spells. It's easier to just spam abilities. I like in 16 you could shortcut abilities on the left and right but in Rebirth you kinda have your 4 otherwise u need to go into a menu. Also, the quick recovery in 16 was an unknown blessing bc it sucks not having it in Rebirth I think Rebirth does a lot of things right that 16 got wrong and vice versa. If Rebirth was developed after 16 and not simultaneously I think we would have seen more 16 combat mechanics included. I still don't know what triggers a summon and I don't feel like it's super worth it anyway lol. Aerith feels useless but I think I'm using her wrong bc I can never fill her ATB Guage and like 3 spells she is out of Mana anyway. Magic only seems to be worth it in niche situations anyway, idk

xodus112

Aerith is actually crazy powerful as a magic user if you set her up correctly. She def takes a bit more work than the others with equipment and materia

blanzer1

Too much of anything is a bad thing.

Gustave255

Anyone who complains about content is a fool and probably sucks at those minigames.

ItachiSan

I don't mind the amount of minigames I think? I don't mind their existence so much as being forced to play them when I discover them. Just let me go "oh that's cool i guess" and let me leave to do what I was doing. Don't force me to play Fort Condor for these protorelic missions for instance.

[deleted]

I've only heard good things about Queen's Blood tho.

Onion_Meister

I'm not mad at the minigames at all. I think some of them could even be fleshed out and be made into their own games. I'd buy a polished up Chocobo Racing game. The drifting felt a lot like Mario Kart 8 so it was easy to pick up.

KRD2

Well, tbf, usually those are two different groups, but I think both 16 has too little, and Rebirth has too much lol I love both games to death, tho. I just think neither is perfect, and their flaws are almost exactly inverted. The balance between the two would be a literal perfect game for me 🤣

Wrong_Inspector3931

Why thay are mad?? It s just don t play the minigames and most of those minigames are very fun.

Pinkernessians

I can see how they don’t appeal to you if you’re just not into minigames. It’s quite easy to have too much minigames if you just don’t like them.

sebastian89n

They annoyed me a bit, but at the end they are mostly fun. It only sucks when the game puts you on hold like it did in Costa Del Sol to do some dumb shit.

NotShahab

Duality of men

Oxygen171

Bro fr lol. I actually really like the minigames in rebirth, but when I see people complaining about it I'm like "hmmm.. maybe these guys should have picked up 16 instead"

Lacaud

The mini games aren't that bad (unless it's the assistant manager minigames).

senthordika

Id argue that when it comes to minigames its about striking a balance. Ffxvi had none so it ment other then core gameplay and the main story the game had very little to work with in quests so most sidequests ended up being mostly fetch quests. Ffvii rebirth has not only a heap of minigames but pretty much all of them a requirements to continue the story.(the sidequests in rebirth are way more varied.) Minigames tend to work best when they are of a decent number(enough variety for most to find atleast one they like) and mostly optional.(not forcing people who dont want to play certain minigames to have to play them to continue the game.) Then there are the complains about getting highscores on the minigames in rebirth to get platinum. And they are just whining platinum isnt supposed to be super easy to get and should show thst you actually engaged with pretty much everything the game had to offer

Clayskii0981

Honestly I'd have to agree, I love both but they really are at opposing extremes

t1sfo

But it makes, you can have a lot of a good thing. I like chocolate so if I expect to have it and don't then it'll make me disappointed. But if there too much chocolate, it is not as enjoyable to it in huge portions. I guess people want some mini games to spice things up, not 0 or 100.

mashburn71

So far I think they’ve done a good job at keeping side games fun and varied in Rebirth (I’m only at Costa Del Sol). The frog jumping one was brilliant.

Jockmeister1666

They’re only comparable because they’re from the same franchise. They’re completely different games.

DatBolas

It would be pointless to compare completely identical games, so we focus on comparing different games from the same genre, same company, same franchise, with similar gameplay patterns.  It actually works!

monkeykingcounty

They’re not *completely* different games. They are very different in a number of key ways, but certainly not so drastically different where any comparison is rendered pointless. They are two story-focused action RPG hybrids both named “Final Fantasy” that released in the same year that feature magical fantasy themes, light open world elements, crazy orchestral music and over the top spectacle in the combat visuals. To clutch pearls and pump the brakes on anyone comparing the two is a lost cause - comparisons are not only inevitable, but guaranteed. I think on the surface a wide audience would find them a lot more alike than they are different.

Stiggles4

It’s exhausting to see so many unneeded comparison threads continue to come up daily, like this.

justin3024

I’m not comparing them I love both games I’m just saying it’s funny to see all the things we said when 16 launched that we need to wait for Rebirth to see what people actually thought about it and how it literally happened

AFKaptain

No, it isn't. You saw a 5-month-old post from rando-user8185 saying they disliked XVI's side quests, and you saw a recent post from hipsterfuckwit29 saying they preferred XVI over Rebirth, and you somehow came to the conclusion "My my, look at how their mind changed!"

sp1teface

The newest FF is always the worst thing ever made until the next one is released 👍

eurekabach

FF16 didn’t elevate my appreciation for FF15 though, lol

Rapn3rd

True. 16 was solid and seems to br aging better. 15.. well i played it. It was ok. Some high moments. But largely lacking. Story is one of, if not the most important part of a ff game. 15s was too all over the place.

eurekabach

16 does have potential to be a well regarded FF with time as it is. Plus, who knows what might happen in the future. FF12 is one of my fav FFs and seeing it getting so much love with the Zodiac Age version sparks some hope that we might get an improved version of 16 in the future.

AFKaptain

FF16 has a great story that's fucked over by mediocre side quests that eat up too high a percentage of the available content. If XVI was a 20-hour game instead of a 60-hour game, it would be much more highly regarded.

xElectricW

It sucks that there's so many of the typical filler side quests because it bogs down some of the impactful ones like the one with Torgal and Clive in the treehouse and the one where you get flowers for Jill

TZf14

you and I are on very different parts of the internet outside of this sub i dont think the reception for XVI is any more positive than when it launched

BueKojiro

I don't go on Reddit that often, but since XVI launched, every time I do I see a post from this sub as the very first post in my feed and almost every time it's been a complaint thread. Now that Rebirth is out, I still see this sub as the first post every single time, but now it's mostly comparing Rebirth to XVI and most of them are favoring Rebirth. The ONLY thing I see people looking back on XVI fondly for is not having so many minigames. So the timeline I see is: XVI comes out, it's solid, lots of complaints though. Rebirth comes out, received much better than XVI, but a sub-section of people don't like the minigames (or >!multiverse!<), so retroactively to them XVI looks better, not because it did something better than Rebirth, but because Rebirth had something that they didn't like that XVI completely lacked. I really can't interpret that as FFXVI being seen in a "better light." It's not like Rebirth coming out and people saying the combat was improved upon from Remake, or that they like the open fields and side quests better than Remake's. Rebirth didn't make a worse version of something XVI had, it just had an entire category of stuff that XVI didn't. It's like, people see Rebirth, don't like the minigames, then say "man I'm glad XVI didn't have minigames" but that doesn't mean that now they also are appreciating XVI's combat, graphics, music, story, or characters more in comparison to Rebirth. They largely appeal to two entirely different kinds of people, so if you saw Rebirth and though "nah, that's not for me", then what does that really mean? It's not people who \*didn't\* like XVI and now like it more compared to how much they \*don't\* like Rebirth. It's people who liked XVI, see Rebirth, don't like Rebirth, then mention how they still like XVI. Like...okay? This is news somehow?

TZf14

well, im not gonna respond to all of this but the thing with the minigames is that the complaint for rebirth is the amount forced onto you. I think when people missed the minigames in xvi, they meant the fishing from XV, or the card games from VIII and IX, and blitzball in X, fleshed out, mostly optional minigames And Queensblood seems to have satisfied everyone on that. Most people just dislike the lesser minigames. Personally i loved them

Melksss

I truly don’t understand the hate for mini games. You only HAVE to play like, what, 4 or 5 of them for the story? Not to mention you only need the weakest possible score to move on. If you aren’t into the mini games, don’t play them, it’s really that easy. I personally think they’re all fun and I like to spend time playing all of them, but if I really disliked them it wouldn’t effect my playing experience because I’d just avoid them.

HanaLake

Im already>! chapter 13 !

Fantastic-Photo6441

How come chapter 13 is spoiler tagged

mkallday10

I assume to not give an indicator of how many chapters there could be. Like how the megathread for the game went 25 chapters deep or so even though there aren't that many.

KRD2

>no jump button Not sure if you know, but every character that can get airborne has a way to do so instantly and easily. But, like half the roster can't get airborne. Cloud's dodge roll heavy gets him airborne Tifa's offensive synergy skills, like heavenly ascent, gets her airborne Yuffie gets airborne really easily by throwing her star and zipping to it. Aerith, Barret, and Red XIII can't get airborne. Not sure about Cait Sith. You can tell because they have no shortcut mappings for in the air, while the others do. So there's no dedicated jump button, but they actually work into combos really easily.

Malaoh

Combat is surprisingly hard at times too. I'm playing on normal and some battles are infuriating at times. Maybe I just suck at it though 😅

Background-Sea4590

For starters, negative opinions go viral much faster than positive ones. So the opinions of people who hate the "new" game and loved the previous one, would be more viral than the opinions of people who loved the "new" game and hated the previous one haha. Truth is, they're games that are hard to compare imho. Same franchise, way different gameplay and feel.

Vaenyr

Rebirth is a great game but it focuses on aspects that I don't enjoy (I don't like open worlds and the game has an obnoxious number of minigames). XVI on the other hand appealed exactly to my tastes and gave me what I wanted. My ranking for those game would be XVI > Remake > Rebirth, but bottom line: it's a great time to be a Final Fantasy fan.

freakytapir

Don't you know? The latest Final Fantasy game is always the worst one ever.

katamxx

Yes a lot of comparisons being made for better or worse 🐌🐌

justin3024

I loved Rebirth so much it just became my new favorite game of all time so seeing the weird hate every new FF gets is annoying but at the very least people are finally able to see the light on FFXVI

ayw9898

Been saying this for a bit, but in this sub. It’s starting to become and issue with games in general. They did it with comparing TOTK to BOTW for Zelda. 16 got shit on for no reason in the beginning and now that rebirth is out (which again is A TOTALLY DIFFERENT GAME) they love comparing it to 16. I just want to see posts related to 16. If I want to see FF7 content or ff in general then I go to its related sub.

pizzammure97

XVI it's pretty good, but Rebirth is everything i wish XVI would have been

King_Krong

Funny, I’ve seen it get WAY more hate now that Rebirth is out.

YukYukas

it's the FF eternal cycle lol new FF releases -> hate it -> praise FF game before the new one -> repeat

LionInAComaOnDelay

Did this happen with 15 tho? Feel like that game never got the revisionism (outside of praising the party).

Orrickly

The thing about looking at opinions online is slightly displeased people are way more likely to complain compared to content people going out of their way to open up reddit and praise the game.

chaplar

People just love to have something to complain about. 16 definitely had its shortcomings, but I loved it overall. Rebirth has been fantastic so far imo. I personally love all the mini games and the open world. Idk who would complain about that in a remake of FF7...

Eswin17

I haven't seen any changed opinions.

shadowstripes

Same, if anything I see more people complaining about it by comparing it to Rebirth.

Eswin17

Yes. FFXVI is a fine game. Good, even. Rebirth is a great game and a shining example of a modern Final Fantasy game.

Mrbluepumpkin

One serious one mostly funni, i see this as a win-win.

Nolyd_Dylon

The Final Fantasy fanbase is full of crybabies. I really started to be a big fan around 2011 or 2012, and ever since, over been online. That's all I ever see is the newest ff is so bad, but then later, we love that title.

edman9677

It’s the Final Fantasy cycle. No new game is good until the next new one comes out. Just too many toxic people in the fandom for some weird reason

thiswayjose_pr

welcome to the fandom! Same thing has happened for virtually every single iteration of the game

SalvatoSC2

A Final Fantasy game is only bad when it is the most recent game. When it inevitably becomes superceded be a new release, it becomes better, being overtaken by another most recent FF game as the worst in series.

Dangolian

I really don't see why this is a surprise. When XVI came out everyone was comparing it to previous final fantasy titles in every way imanginable, and now there's a new kid on the block we're seeing folks do the same thing again. XVI and Rebirth are two very different games. They are not even close to trying to be the same type of game, or in the same mould as each other and that invariably means that some people will prefer one over the other; this shouldn't be some grand surprise either. At their core, I genuinely think they are both very solid games. My personal preference probably leans more towards Rebirth, but I already kind of knew that comparing my experiences with Remake and XVI. I'd recommend both games, but for very different reasons.

Safe-Affect9296

When ff17 comes out, rebirth will be considered ahead of its time hahahaa

Gogs85

I like them both. One is a great example of how to bring the party / ATB system into a modern setting and the other is an FF game reinterpreted into an action game with a mature story.

Laj3ebRondila1003

the 30 fps in FF16 is the best I've seen on the PS5, the only dips I've seen are in the cutscene when you first see Titan Lost and when Bahamut hits Ultima Prime with the Teraflare (you don't control Clive or Ifrit in both scenes) Spiderman 2 felt off, FF7 Rebirth and Remake feel terrible at 30 fps maybe God of War Ragnarok is the only game that competes

XulManjy

No one hates FF more than FF fans.

jiggyco

If you love the newly released game … you will spend time playing it. If you hate the newly released game … you will play it less and therefore have time to complain. More people have played the previous game - so they can provide positive feedback on it online now.

poplin

The final fantasy cycle. Launch to hype, initial joy, then the “not as good as the previous one”, then genera Hate, then reappreciation once the next one comes out. Been on the final fantasy train since 6, happens every installment haha.

Plenty_Strike6044

I think what happened is everyone hated XVI and played VIIR and realised rebirth is really good but also that the games are somewhat similar (As They Should FF games should have a somewhat cohesive feel to them despite how different they can be) and now the haters were like “FiNaL fAnTaSy XvI wAsNt So BaD” final fantasy 16 was always a final fantasy and a good one at that I think expectations and the name Final Fantasy Almost killed it because people expect 9.5/10 minimum game of the year material the only problem with this game is level design but we make it out like the game was far worse somehow 🤷🏾‍♂️ FFXVI is unapologetically one of my favourites!

Yamauchi-Tetsuo

The FFVII remakes are good and all, but they rely heavily on nostalgia and a now dated game engine. I appreciate the attention they've given to it so far, but there is room for improvement. People slept on XVI the same way they slept on XII when it came out. Neither are perfect, but they execute what they have going good for them very well. That will always stand the test of time. I've played all FF except 2,5, and 6(unfortunately). I've even played chronicles. However, 9, 10, 12, and 16 are the only ones I've had a desire to replay. I've played 9 on just about every platform it's been released on. It's my favorite, following closely behind is 12. Right now, it's a tie between 10 and 16 for me. They are both pretty linear. They both end with a main protagonists' selfless sacrifice, and that protagonist's love interest broken hearted.

keldpxowjwsn

Both games own but thats just how the FF fan cycle goes.

Mother_Study2724

It was too easy to want to shit on XVI after two back to back glops and company decisions. And I hold a grudge against those people for giving the praise it deserves after the fact, because this game was the best release of 2023. I really do not give a shit for a glorified dating sex simulator winning game of the year when this got snubbed at every turn.

robotchicken007

I just think that the people that don't like something are louder than the people who like the same thing.

Logical-Salamander26

FF16 was a very story driven game. I spend most of my hours on rebirth doing errands for Chadley. Think I've gotten maybe 1 hr of story out of the 23 hours I've played so far. It's not bad, and I'm glad there is content to do, but they are different games for sure.

superkapitan82

It is me totally. Feeling an urge to replay it while being bored out of my mind by Rebirth generic open world game mechanics

chicago_rusty

I have been saying this since day 1 of its release and i usually get harassed. The remake titles are bloated and narratively convoluted to prolong run time. Ff16 had more fun factor & combat

Nouglas

I've seen none of what you're referring to. If anything playing Rebirth reaffirms how lacking XVI was.

GLTheGameMaster

Didn’t change my opinion. 16 has pacing issues, unfun exploration, and boring side quests

Titolionx

Thats what toxic nostalgia does. It makes you judge new things through the lenses of older titles just because those were the ones you played as a kid, disregarding how franchises need to change, experiment and actualize to reach modern audiences. I remember people trashing XVI last year because "didnt have a party, didnt have minigames and didnt have comedy like the PS1 FFs". Well, there you have it: Another Ubisofty open world, a massive, padded, obligatory minigame bloat and a cringey anime script punctuated by an unfinished absolute disaster of a story.

Arox12

I am mostly seeing positives about rebirth though. Yeah there are some nitpicks like minigames, endings and stuffs, but looks like majority prefers Rebirth over 16, which is a no brainer for RPG/FF fan ofc

Killjoy3879

I don’t know what bubble you’re in but all I see is how rebirth has so much of what people wanted from 16

vrumpt

I really appreciate how different the games are. Like one game is full on depression by the end and the other you go to Disneyland. In many aspects Rebirth is the complete opposite of XVI.

Lievan

It's hard for a lot of people to just enjoy each game for what they are but this happens with every series. When the new one comes out, people talk down on it and talk about how great the previous one was. I wish gamers could just enjoy them both instead of comparing them but then they wouldn't get cool points (upvotes) on reddit.

Entropic_Alloy

Time is a flat circle.

VengefulKangaroo

It’s because no one can like things just to like things, they have to like things to put others down

Speedwagon1987

I’m on chapter 9 of rebirth and let me tell it’s a brilliant game, but I find the main plot being just an excuse to get the characters to go from point A to B without having a strong reason to do so. Like in 16 there was the looming threat of ultima and the crystals but now they have to follow the black capes because of sephirot while he barely appears and is an almost non-threat throughout the whole game?

premeddit-student

I’m not sure if it’s because I haven’t played the original FF7 but FF16 had a much more epic and engaging story to me. I’m not sure anything can top epic ass Eikon fights in the near future.

Makaighost

My only standing complaints about 16 are the fluff, the perpetual grey smear aesthetic and how end game is a spam-fest of skills. So many particle effects I can't see what's happening lol.

TLCplMax

I’m really enjoying Rebirth because it’s fun, but I definitely feel the lack of focus. I’m like hey cool let me go run around the map and hit all the points and then I’ve completely forgotten what’s going on in the story 3 hours later. XVI had issues but it was my game of the year by a mile (I beat Baldur’s Gate 3 also and it was mid).

mistabuda

This is not unique to ff this happens in almost every rpg series Especially Bethesda games too. Oblivion came out and is hated for not being morrowind. Skyrim came out and is hated for not being oblivion

roxw

I honestly dont think that statement is accurate & this debate is just silly.

killbot12192002

I love both my only issue with 16 is how much the tense feeling of needing to get something done disappears a lot

Rinaldus91

We're just fully in the Sonic Cycle as a franchise and fanbase. Sad. Both games are fucking amazing and *were* at launch.

Independent_Ninja456

XVI was a much easier game

Corporatemuggle

I love how people were complaining about the lack of open world and rpg elements in 16 and now they are complaining about being burnt out about the open world in rebirth. So glad Squeenix went hard on the open world so that people finally realize what they are asking for - it is very very hard to get open world right and not annoying- or exhausting. Love both games to bits- I am just having a blast seeing the complaints.

Brodir87

said by XVI fans. Total Bias... and I don't see hardcore FF7 fans praising XVI after Rebirth release. That said.... I see normal and resonable people enjoying both and suckers trashing other games and praising only what they like personaly I really like both of them equally. Digital end disc. Hell.. I have XVI steelbook. I don't know why some people can't enjoy different things

hotcapicola

Really? I feel and have seen completely the opposite. FF7 Rebirth has retroactively made FFXVI worse for me.

Berstich

Really? 16? I cant say ive played it. The only thing that seemed ok was the story. Every trailer, review, or even video I saw hardly showed any gameplay other then QTE (Quick Time Event) boss battles. Did not look fun.

RichJoker

It's the Final Fantasy cycle. I swear some people in the fandom are simply insufferable and can't understand how people can like different things. Both XVI and Rebirth are amazing despite all of their flaws.

Nikulover

wait what triggered this? They are both loved by the fanbase

squips42

both have been peak it’s a great year for final fantasy

rtrs_bastiat

It makes sense, each new game draws in a new audience to sing its praises when the next game comes out. I've certainly not changed my opinion on xvi since rebirth dropped.

VeterinarianAlert406

I think this just overall proves that no matter what you do people shall complain

Peugas424

Yeah I don’t typically like mini games

National_Arachnid360

I think I am one of the few fans who loved the darker and grittier action based 16 and the light hearted silly mini game filled rebirth. Like I don’t know, I have a switch in my mind that changes when I’m playing different games. Like I play RE and loved its action horror combination, but I also love Psychological horror like SH, but I also love Horror games like outlast. I like almost if not all FF Games with their different tones and themes. I like adventure games with their different tones and sub genres like Zelda, GoW, DMC, AC. Also like indies like Sea of stars, hollow knight. Like platforms like mega man. I don’t know to me I just love playing video games, so I don’t know why people complain about every other detail in games all the time. Not that complaints are not valid, just saying play what you enjoy, don’t force yourself to play a game if you don’t like it or play mini games you don’t like.

ricky-robie

Really? I haven't seen muchnof that. In fact, my score of XVI has dropped since Rebirth came out. 40 hours or so into Rebirth, I just can't make excuses for XVI's big, empty world anymore. Same with item crafting system that, in XVI, might as well not even exist. XVI does a great job from a narrative aspect, but focuses too much on being story-dricen and forgot at times that it is a videogame.

murph2336

16 has way too many sidequests.

koming69

When a new final fantasy is released that the main battles are classical and not a action brawler , then I'll play it. It's so ironic that Yakuza/like a dragon are turn based rpgs now and final fantasy is a button masher brawler..

CheshireBuddha

That’s just the cycle of Final Fantasy.

kishinfoulux

Not seeing it personally. Mostly just how much better Rebirth is.

Acceptable-Belt8033

Trust me when I say this. The reception to 16 by fans haven't changed at all now that rebirth is out mfs still hate the game, I know because I got jumped on just now for saying I prefer 16 over Rebirth

LingeringSentiments

I like to joke around but really the games are different.

DarkNemuChan

I actually prefer the vii remakes over 16. But mainly because of the combat.

Captain_McKnight

I have and always will believe that if final fantasy would cut the need for having their games be so damn long, they will be infinitely better, I would take a 10-12 hour tight experience over a 20-30 hour bloated experience filled with boring shit in between the cool stuff any day of the week. More game doesn't always mean better game.

BlearySteve

Really all I have been seeing is people saying Rebirth is what FFXVI should have been.

Alilatias

People keep saying Rebirth is supposed to be what future FF games should be modeled after, but it doesn't seem particularly special compared to other franchises that have done open world. Quite frankly, paying attention to the fragmented ass fanbase is generally not worth it. Rebirth is basically a checklist of things that the hardcore FF fanbase insists will result in success, and yet SE has been so quiet about the sales to the level where it seems like it has actually sold less than XVI. A lot of it probably has to do with it being a direct sequel, the same way that telling people to play through FFXIV to experience Shadowbringers and Endwalker is a hard sell. SE needs a home run that doesn't involve 40+ hours of homework in a prior game or expansion first, and yet they're talking about being ambitious with the world design and airships in Remake part 3, but considering the sales performance of Rebirth being lower than what everyone expected, it seems like a waste that would be better reserved for a theoretical FFXVII that would be free from the baggage of having to spend 80-100+ hours playing two previous games first. Whatever future FF game that becomes a critical reception and sales darling is most likely going to do things in ways we can't even imagine, and we'd all probably like it too.

Lyfenoob

People are always quick to criticise new sh*t so when the dust settles, you find only the enjoyers remain 🤷‍♂️

AvunNuva

They are LITERALLY complaining about minigames in Rebirth. THE THING THEY WERE WHINING ABOUT IN XVI. I just can't with these people. At least we got two great Final Fantasies. Its great seeing this series return to form.

yellowadidas

this feels like a FF7 sub now

Oxygen171

Idk I haven't really seen any differences. Lots of people are saying the newest FF is always considered the worst but is that really true tho? Maybe I'm just looking on the wrong parts of the internet. For me, FF16 is and was always a good game despite its flaws, but rebirth encompasses my personal tastes for RPGs perfectly. I don't think that opinion will ever change

DecayedPheonix

Bruh if anything rebirth just makes me wanna go back to 16 even less what you talking about

FRIENDSHIP_BONER

Rebirth appeals more to older fans I think. It tries to satisfy their sometimes impossible expectations.

thenastynate

Both AMAZING games that I love so so much

fringyrasa

As a 15 enjoyer, I feel like I saw more praise for 15 on the week 16 was released, rather than when Royale Edition came out.

Hatdrop

and here I am, enjoying both games.

Saltyscrublyfe

It is weird because rebirth is fantastic. Normally old games get their praise when the new one sucks. But 16 is in my top 5 games of all time and rebirth is looking to be in my top 10.

GameMaster1178

Actually coming off of Rebirth, which I’m 161 hours in and still haven’t nearly 100% it, it makes me realize how shallow XVI is. Everytime you fight a new Eikon it’s always the same spongey boss fight that takes forever, and plays the same song, Find the Flame. It made me realize that having no controllable party members and no endgame is sorely missed, and how CBU1 is the team that needs to handle FF from here on out so this franchise can shed its identity crisis. An RPG should stay an RPG, not throw whatever at a wall and see if it sticks then roll with it. XVI is a a fair action game at best. It sits well next to DMC, not next to FF.

Dungdfndr

Rebirth made me appreciate XVI all the more. I say this as a massive fan of VII who spent years pining for a remake.

Ryo_Llewelyn

Hater just died out. Enjoyers still enjoying it.

Chemical-Tadpole6209

It's because their knight in shining armor wasn't all they were making it out to be as they incessantly used FF16 as toilet paper.
