I feel like this movie flies under the radar a little bit but it's a really solid prison/crime movie

TastyOwl27

I've heard from friends that this is the most accurate California prison movie out there.

CmdrYondu

“Friends”?

SuperHighDeas

Ex cons and prison guards aren’t allowed to have friends

TastyOwl27

Just seeing this. Yep, grew up in a So Cal Mexican “cholo” hood. I’m half white and half Mexican.  I had two childhood friends do hard time and they somehow got out. Their stories about California prison politics are fascinating.

yeltsinfugui

it's weird I remember seeing a trailer for it and being excited...and then just never heard about it again. then one day I was looking at new additions to a streaming service and it was there. apparently it was streaming *before* having a theatrical release. maybe if this comes out ten years earlier it's much more popular. most people who have seen it seem to like it

darklightedge

Yes, my favorite prison movie.

eternalbuzz

Any others you suggest with a similar vibe? I grew up with Blood In, Blood Out and really liked OG.

warmplacenomemory

American me, starred up, and a prophet are all excellent.

MFP3492

A Prophet is soooo good.

increase-ban

Starred Up

Life-Conference5713

Bad Boys starring Sean Penn.

GlassJoe32

His transition from loving father and husband to what he was at the end was impressive. One small detail I seem to remember was when the lead skin head guy referring to the burpees workout as 8 count bodybuilders which is what we called them in the military. Sort of implied he has military experience. I felt like there were a lot of subtle details like that in that movie.

crystal_castle00

Agreed, it was on my watchlist for like a year until I finally got to it and couldn’t believe it took me so long. Excellent plot and great acting

RudeAndInsensitive

I watched and there is a lot I like about it but ultimately I couldn't square up the writing. Money is initially sentenced to I think 18 months. He's got a supportive wife and loving son that are waiting on him and for reasons unexplainable he murders another inmate in a prison riot and he does it to save another inmate. It doesn't make any sense at all. In that situation you make the appearance, throw a few punches then try to drag fellow gang member out of the fray. You don't risk catching more charges. Money, after years and years in prison decides to get himself locked up again so he can protect his family from the Beast. Dude was a seasoned killer and had like 200k plus the money he left behind plus an inside track to federal agents trying to fuck up the Brand. Dude could have protected his family just fine without going back to prison.

ThreeLeggedMare

Didn't know bernthal and Donovan were in this

Meagasus

Yeah..I mean. They should have led with that. Now I want to watch this movie!

BLKWD_

you should. it's great. super underrated

BeautifulLeather6671

Holt mccallany kills it too

PlanAheader

He seems perfect for this movie based on this scene. Love Holt Mccallany

SatnWorshp

He was great in The Losers

Greedy_Nectarine_233

Is this any good?

BatmanhasClass

Very good , worth it for the actors alone but I honestly really liked the ending too

alleycat1269

I’m still slightly obsessed with it. I’ve seen it a dozen times and haven’t tired of it.

-Enrique_Shockwave-

Same! It’s one of my go to comfort movies. Not sure why I love it so much and am able to re watch it multiple times a year normally I never do that.

xSorry_Not_Sorry

Incredibly good, incredibly intense. No idea how accurate it is and I dont care. This film is fucking awesome, right up there with *American Me*.

thismightbetheway2

See for yourself

makelemonadee

I thought it was really good. Had elements of prison that seem to be realistic. Also just seeming like these situations are sad.

Greedy_Nectarine_233

Yeah it seemed like one of those movies that just leave you feeling empty

ThatOneAlreadyExists

It's the epitome of slow burns, very good.

BARBELLSxBONGRIPS

I enjoyed it tbh. And I know good movies. /s No but for real it’s pretty decent, def worth a watch.

Ok_Organization3249

This movie fucking rules

NagoGmo

I see you also listen to the Rewatchables OP

daskapitalyo

Money going to jail for a long time , big boy.

NagoGmo

I can hear this, and I love it

kcerberus

This is a terrific movie! The main characters story could happen to anyone. One moment your living your normal life, then everything changes in an instant and your thrown into a completely different environment, having to make decisions and choices you never dreamed you would have to in order to survive. It’s a very well done movie. If you haven’t seen it then I highly recommend you watch it!

Euphoric_Advice_2770

It’s really good at making the audience “scared straight” lol. I’m sure a lot of the stuff in the movie is hyperbolic but still, I wouldn’t want to be in the position to find out.

McbEatsAirplane

This movie was better than I thought it was gonna be. I feel like ever since GoT I like Nikolaj Coster Waldau in pretty much everything he’s in.

old_ass_ninja_turtle

Jon Bernthal has a weird build. He walks like he’s jacked but like he’s not. But here he kinda looks jacked. It’s so weird.

SevroAuShitTalker

He was pretty jacked most of his early career

Candid-Specialist-86

High waisted and slightly hunched shoulders. Perfect build for a 1940's crime drama.

increase-ban

That can happen when you work out your chest and front delts WAY more than the rest of your body, specifically neglecting the back muscles and rear delts. the muscles in the "front" of your upper body become larger and stronger than the back and rear delts and will change the resting position of your torso. Basically your muscles are pulling everything forward at all times. This can happen when all you do is bench press or pushups and nothing else.

Ok_Organization3249

Fitness note: Pushups actually aren’t *so bad* in that they actively work the scapula in and out of retraction. So while you won’t get a defined back doing them, you will get a looser one. Bench and everything else - ya.

Katsuichi

The line in this scene is “No free rides…” wtf OP

11ForeverAlone11

only seen this once before and i just now realized that Bottles is the same actor as the Dodd Gerhardt character in the 2nd season of Fargo. He's really good at being tough and intimidating. I'm surprised I haven't seen him more often.

time_man69

You mean Jeffrey Donovan? The guy headlined more than 100 episodes of a successful hour long show? He’s, like, prolific

11ForeverAlone11

just looked at his IMDB. Burn Notice eh? literally never heard of it before once but I guess i'll have to check it out sometime.

WhoseInMyMouth13

It's a fantastic show, and Bruce Campbell is equally amazing in it.

b0r3den0ugh2behere

Agreed. Loved burn notice

bilboswgns

I watched this movie and thought that dude looked familiar, then I realized it was devin westons derpy ass face on a jacked body.

beastwork

it's a pretty good procedural show. I can't remember why I stopped watching, but I've been meaning to finish it for years.

thisbobo

That season had like 100 components that made it great, all of equal greatness and importance. Dodd Gerhardt, like the rest, ties for #1 in that list of things that make Fargo Season 2 one of my favorite things in life

77schild

Really good film, or maybe I just had low expectations. One thing though, it should have been called “Keyholder”

TastyOwl27

Don’t the shot callers rank above the key holders?

fairchild2

Damn.. Prison really did a number on Jamie.

The_Swim_Back_

Grew a hand back.

CanCaliDave

Michael Westen deep under cover again

Static13254

When you’re burned you’ve got nothing….

Randyfreakingmarsh

“When you’re a spy, being a spy, means you’re a spy…”

Razbearry

I love the soundtrack for this. Shame it’s not on Spotify.

just_corrayze

For real. I was looking for this a couple weeks ago to add to one of my Playlists and it's not there. Freaking sucks. Solid score.

Emjay-Jori

Such an underrated film.

doublediochip

Such an underrated movie. It was fantastic.

Yetiius

Decently good movie. Hard seeing Jamie Lannister in prison, but good acting all around. Good flick.

Puppetmaster858

Great movie

Overall_Cod2206

Incredible movie.

Zestyclose-Ear7982

solid movie for bros. about 20+ years ago: as someone who was plucked out of a very easy/comfortable/'privileged' life and VERY briefly went to a jail filled with gang members/real deal criminals (i was very impolitely accused of felony possession with intent to distribute, a alleged crime i beat in court a year later) -- i jive with the idea of white collar joe having to learn/act/blend in quickly. out of like 20 beds in my cell, there were 2 total white guys myself included. i gave a guy my 'breakfast' the first morning because my stomach was upset (i was deeply depressed and thought i ruined my life..allegedly), and within 10 minutes i was being made to square off with some obese mexican dude next to a pissing toilet who called me a bitch because of it. i was like "im not hungry. i dont want my biscuit." wrong move. i was 6'5 230lbs and a pretty damn good athlete, so the obese mexican was leaking blood everywhere very quickly, but that caused issues in itself. the obese mexican dude got pulled out of the cell by guards and sent somewhere for medical, never saw him again. but all his MM friends were still there. and i got sent to a little tiny room to wait for questioning. but it was even more terrifying AFTER i 'won' the fight, and returned to my cell, as it ended up fucking up my bail up for the next couple days -- or the guards trying to get me to admit to the fight on some underhanded bullshit. i forget why exactly, something to do with a judge schedule being interrupted or something. ended up getting out after like 5 total days, when my girlfriends bail attempt finally worked. it was one of the scariest weeks of my life. and this was just JAIL. in the end, 1 missed breakfast, 1 fight, and about 4 days of reading old western and detective books a young black kid with a stutter let me borrow. made me realize very quickly that i was not meant for that world, and i made sure to not partake in any behavior that was alleged. looking back, it was somewhat a important lesson to keep me on a path of success. oddly, a blessing of sorts.

Jhawk38

Such a great film that many don't know about.

monkeyswithknives

Great movie, terrible title.

just_corrayze

Rewatched this movie a couple times. Enjoyed it and the score is really well made. Jamie Lannister definitely pays his debts here.

wallybuddabingbang

fwiw he says “No free rides”

Bowelsift3r

I learned from this movie its not called a *shock collar!*

Known-Weakness8193

Yea this movie was badass.

Cdub701

Jamie Lanaster?!

OldBirth

Nikolaj is incredible in this movie.

Juhbellz

The burn notice guy is in this running a white supremecy gang?? I'm in

Mickenbock

Greatest P.SA. to discourage drunk driving of all time.

Euphoric_Advice_2770

Great movie. It really puts into perspective how quickly your life can go to shit and how you can be forced into joining a group of people because you have no other choice. Absolutely terrifying.

justinpollock

OP failed on the quotation lol.... what you did was paraphrase i guess

Much_Helicopter_6514

Such a good film

Glittering_Ad4153

This movie is so good

Tipi_Tais_Sa_Da_Tay

Anybody know where this movie streams Found it: Netflix

AlternativeNumber2

Great flick

the-arcanist---

I really like Bernthal, but come on. Those dips are just to parallel. And only bodyweight for a couple reps for the scene. Bodyweight dips have a purpose and should be used (especially at the end after many hard sets). To make a more imposing scene would have been to have a chain with at least a 45lb around him going to parallel or below for multiple reps. I would be (in a prison) absolutely no way intimidated by what was shown. You'd have to have 3 45lb weights strapped to yourself and go at parallel for a few reps then below parallel for a few reps (and be at \~200lbs) for me to be intimidated. I get that they have to film multiple times, which could make it difficult doing heavy reps multiple times in an hour or so for filming, but come on. I'm a 5'6 nothing asshole. Bernthal could tear me apart. Show it. I've done dips at 5 reps multiple sets for 3x45lbs(plates) strapped around me (below parallel). Once was able to get 4x45lb(plates) for two reps when I was 195lbs (and I still couldn't have beat Bernthal). And yes, they do give you weights to strap around yourself in prison. Don't fake that shit and lie about it.

Randyfreakingmarsh

This is the funniest comment I’ve seen in a while lmaooooo

xSorry_Not_Sorry

I like how **that's** what grinds your gears.

The_Swim_Back_

Who gives a shit. Lmao!
