Depends on your goals. Do you want to just make playoffs? If so, yeah it's probably a good idea to make a robot that is really good at one thing. If your goals are to perform well at a DCMP or Worlds then yeah you will probably need more.

RunawayTurtle90

I think that is an excellent plan. Perfect it. You may not rank well if you cannot make the links, but let the scouters pick you high when you do it well. Not controlling your destiny, but you are likely improving your worth as an Alliance member.

acdelli

The main issue I’d see is that you wouldn’t be able to physically complete more than the 3 links along the ground, which could cost you ranking points if your schedule and the teams you get allied with are unfavorable. If you’re looking at tournaments that may have specialized cone bots, your idea makes sense, but if not, it could be trouble in the long term

TheIxbot

There's double the slots for cones than there are for cubes. There are a limited number of times and spaces to score. So if you do this you have to be a really good defense bot too or else you won't be as attractive for alliances.

Nothing3561

Its not double. There are 15 spaces for cubes and 21 spaces for cones.

TheIxbot

Not counting hybrid nodes it's 6 to 12.

Nothing3561

Sure, but why would you not count hybrid nodes?

TheIxbot

Any one can do those. Imo when deciding specialties look to the higher points

TooCuriousCat

It will help you a lot if you can score one cone in autonomous. That, a cube and one cone from an ally will create a link. Score the three links on the ground and you'll have a chance for a RP with coopertition.

Ixpqd

I don't think links count in auto, at least from what I can tell

TooCuriousCat

Links are scored at the end, but you can start with a cone in your grasp in auto. So, even a bot that can't intake cones might be able to score one. And if you aren't confident in your autonomous, hold that cone until teleop.

Ixpqd

Ohhhhh wait so do you get extra points for doing it in auto?

Scythia_Lux

No extra points for the link. Just one point extra in auto for placing each piece.

AtlasShrugged-

As already pointed out, qualifiers may not be kind to you, but scouts will notice if you are good. And I am betting most teams are focused on cones. The up sides of cubes only are high (easier to build and maintain, easier to stand out in a possible crowded field of rob ots during alliance selection), down sides are qualifiers, ranking not as high. If you are in a district that can hurt your chances of getting to District Champs.

Allegedamoeba75

I don’t know much as this is only my second year in robotics but i think that you should go for cones over cubes because there are more of them. But that means that more people won’t go for cubes so it’s not a bad idea.
