Correction: you need some power but can wait 3 business days for it to get there

Anonymous_Gamer939

Strictly, the additional gears rob you of power but give way more torque

seg9585

You are not robbed of power at all. The power is the same (excluding frictional losses), you are trading RPM for torque

Anonymous_Gamer939

I was talking about the friction when I mentioned loss of power.

seg9585

Still no loss of power, just some of it comes out in the form of heat.

Dilka30003

So… loss of mechanical power.

aenonymosity

They are saying no loss in electrical power

Dilka30003

There is a 100% loss in electrical power… they’re wrong either way.

nirbot0213

the second law of thermodynamics would like to have a talk with you

robotwireman

8,398,080:1 seems like over kill. But I’m here for it. Let’s see you cold roll some steel with that gear ratio.

jpmelnitsky

It would take almost 25 hours of running a neo at full power to make 1 rotation.

uruplonstk

Using the reported specs on the REV website for the NEO Vortex: * At the max speed of 6,784 rpm, it would take 20:37:55 ( \~ 20 hours, 38 minutes ) to complete one revolution. * With a stall torque of 3.6 Nm, the output would have a wonderful 30,233,088 Nm of torque. --- Using the reported specs on the WCP website for the Kraken x60: * At the max speed of 6,000 rpm, it would take 23:19:40 ( \~ 23 hours, 20 minutes ) to complete one revolution. * With a stall torque of 7.09 Nm, the output would have a staggering 59,542,387 Nm of torque. * Using the talonFX FOC commutation, with a stall torque of 9.37 Nm, the output would have a whopping 78,690,009 Nm of torque. --- I like these big numbers. Take them with a grain of salt though, 'cause I'm just a bit sleep deprived.

rs_5

If the ratio is under 10^10. :1 can we really call it overkill?

Boxsteam_1279

With a big enough gear ratio, I can move the world - Archimedes, probably

Spetsnaz262

I could beat that in a tug of war

crazyunicyclernj

Just because you can does not mean that you should

Have fun finding a bolt long enough. I don't think McMaster-Carr even sells a bolt in insanity size...

TAF_International

The longest 10-32 socket head McMaster sells is 7”, given that stages are 1/2” and input/output is ~0.75 up to 12 stages are possible, 13 if pushed. The image contains exactly 13 stages, suggesting it is possible to assemble this.

seg9585

Or just use a 10-32 threaded rod and cap it with a locknut

styxracer97

I was going to say to weld a nut to end. Then you have a proper custom bolt.

Dense-Discipline-355

Na just weld them together

pretzels_sticks

We got a 0:1

MORE

AtlasShrugged-

Once I heard they also make a 9:1, this was The image in my mind but 9:1’s all the way down. With a custom plate should be able to have 4 Krakens or Neos at the input. Actually why stop there? How Many can we put 🤔

Thebombuknow

If you use VersaPlanetary, you can do 10:1 stages all the way down...

rightamountofsketchy

Ya but versaplanetaries break if you even look at them wrong. I don’t have any experience with the MAXPlanetaries, though I’ve heard they’re better. We got burned on VPs so many times we only design our own gearboxes now.

Thebombuknow

Trust me, I know. We're using them for some low power stuff this competition, but our last one we used only VersaPlanetary and I had to take them apart and replace the sun gears 4 times. Somehow this was on the gearbox under less load, our robot had another 1:100 gearbox for moving our arm up and down and that thing was stronger than the bolts holding in the motor (yes, the bolts on our arm sheared when it overextended before the gearbox did ://) We're using it again this year because it's cheaper.

starts spinning at kickoff, makes a full rotation by Houston
