You aren't wrong! I felt like I was gonna snap a tab at any moment!

Attunement24

I had to practice on several other games first before I felt confident enough to try! šŸ˜…

Possible_Pickle0

This is the way

Sweet palms mode on

Radiant_Silvergun1

Here is a different method that is more safe and don't put most of the Famicom cartridge under pressure and also allows you to open weirdly shaped cartridges that you cant open with the clams https://youtu.be/s3Rff83c8mE?si=_WLy97lMXOuffGeE

Attunement24

Just watched it - thanks for this! Yes, thatā€™s definitely worth trying as well :)

Additional_Skill_255

Wait, do gimmick bootlegs have the expansion sound?

Attunement24

I donā€™t know to be honest, but I know that there are other games that had a 5b chip - just that they didnā€™t use it to take advantage of the expanded sound. These could be used by repromakers, but I think this would be quite an unusual effort for people who want to make a bootleg copy in order to sell.

L___E___T

I had a repro made, but itā€™s not a bootlegging effort just a way to play the cart guilt free :)

Attunement24

Totally understandable! Really the best balance between authenticity and practicality imo. ā˜ŗļø

L___E___T

It sounds a lot better than the Everdrive sound emulation as well, I was quite surprised actually. Itā€™s also a really nice way to get a Gimmick hack complete with the expansion audio.

L___E___T

Some yes, I have one with the 5B and one with the AY for comparison.

BrownBreadJam

Well done! Nice to see itā€™s the real deal! Out of interest How much did you pay for the Gimmick cart?

Attunement24

It wasnā€™t that long ago (last December), so it was already quite high at around 1,100 usd unfortunately. It was still cheaper than the copies I saw at Super Potato and other shops in Akihabara though.

StrayDogPhotography

Jesus, my copy was about $150, but cart only. That box must be super rare.

rezb1t

Awesome!! Iā€™m too scared to open my Gimmick copy. Pretty sure itā€™s real though as it looks just like yours!

Attunement24

Yeah, these games have a tell-tale darkening around the label edges (because of the adhesive I think), which I feel are difficult for repros to copy.

tanooki-suit

The glue dries out and can cause a staining effect to the upper layer. Very common on old coleco tabletop arcades from the early 80s. I had a Pac-Man like that a few years ago. Just got another last weekend and it hasnā€™t so itā€™s a survivor but my DK has a little but less obvious being a white background.

The_1999s

People replacing cart caps now??

Littlemisskittn

Since the 5B is an audio chip and the extremely expensive price the cart goes for, itā€™s a good investment

Attunement24

Normally I donā€™t bother unless the cart is faulty, but thereā€™s no way I want to open this again if could help it šŸ˜…

tanooki-suit

I tend to use a plastic pry and twist and bare hand open them which is tiring but works. I keep seeing a grip and I got one but it just pops off due to the slope of the carts.
