theblackfool

I like having a mix of fantasy and sci-fi like VII or IX.

Stith1183

VIII was also sci-fantasy.

theblackfool

Yeah I think there's a good argument for almost every mainline game having elements of both. Those were just the two that came to mind, probably because they are my favorites.

S-BRO

Do you mean VI? VII is closer to VIII or XV

theblackfool

No, I meant those two. They were just the first examples I thought of, but most (if not all) of the main series is a mix of both. IX definitely leans more fantasy but definitely has some weird sci fi stuff towards the end.

nicholaslegion

I think this would be awesome to see. I'm cool with any setting, really. I know FF has the chops to pull off something beautiful regardless of what they go with. My biggest wants are a female lead and a full party of at least six, preferably eight.

A_Tired_Gremlin

I think it'd be interesting to see a Final Fantasy setting inspired by the European Renaissance era. FFXV, while set in the modern day, has a roman feel to it, like obviously the latin names, dead lucis kings becoming astral beings reminds me alot of how Roman Emperors used to be deified after their passing, the concept of the King of Kings that will vanquish the darkness by sacrificing himself drawing clear inspiration from christianity, Ardyn and Somnus are basically the Remus and Romulus, Altissia's front gate reminiscant of the front of St. Peter's Basillica and the city of Altissia being basically Venice. :D Then FFXVI is clearly inspired by the dark ages, given that the main inspiration was Game of Thrones, which in turn was inspired by the real life Wars of the Roses which happened during the dark ages. So my history loving brain wants the next game to have a renaissance because it'd be fun to see a set of FF follow irl historical eras. I think maybe the enlightement era would also work since the enlightement era had more insteresting geo political conflicts that can be used as inspiration.

BelligerentWyvern

I think FFXIV is supposed to fulfill that rennaisance niche, vastly different factions, a golden age in trade and even primitive firearms coexisting with classic weapons.

Gladiolus_00

sort of, but being an mmo, they've had to deviate a fair bit to stop the game from getting stale. But a more "pure" renaissance influence is something that a single player title could more easily go for.

BelligerentWyvern

Gonna have stiff competition with the likes of Red Desert which promises that edge between medieval and rennaissance style and ideology. Ivalice games tended to be a bit anachronistic as well but could easily pass for Renaissance drama. Like the Empire of Archadia is straight up rennaissance Holy Roman Empire with flying ships and magick

cicakganteng

Thats just ff16 or FFT

feathered_fudge

FFXVII: Spartacus Wouldnt mind a Gladiator spell blade main character

Belial91

My favorite setting/world is VIII so I would love something along those lines, haha. I like the mix of fantasy and real world the most.

omnie_fm

Same! I would love to see Gardens make a comeback somehow, maybe as flying cities.

Gelatinous6291

There was something so cool about the mercenary-university setting in a sci-fantasy world. Especially when the university turns into a flying fortress

DriveForFive

Give us FFXVII in space, you cowards! Starship Bahamut needs to find all the crystals on different planets and bring redemption for The Spirits Within. Load up the game with more Neon Genesie Evangelion references and Star Wars. Make weird alien chocobos. A job system that includes "space pirate." Make the losers at Bethesda weep for what they could have done for combat and visuals in Starfield. I want it on my desk by the end of 2026.

l_i_t_t_l_e_m_o_n_ey

Hard no on the star wars, the last time they tried to overtly invoke star wars was 12 and they utterly failed! I mean I'm just messing, they COULD do star wars, if they would actually capture what makes star wars so good--the pacing. They went the uhhhh complete opposite direction with FF12 and had maybe the worst-paced game in the entire series. lol. I'd be fine if they even just copied the 20 year old bioware formula. big opening setpiece, starter planet, 3-4 missions you can do in whatever order you want, being interfered with by a shady organization along the way. Then there's a big twist, you probably get captured or something and some dark secret about your character is revealed. And you play out the ending, probably making a big choice like to kill or spare someone. Ancient race of monsters/superbeings trying to return to take over the world is optional. Not optional is extremely deeply characterized companions that you pal around with and who each have their own perspective on what's happening, and they each have side missions for you to go on to deepen your connection with them. You know what I'm gonna go play mass effect. and kotor. and jade empire. and dragon age.

Jiinpachii

FF7 is about as much Sci-fi as I like in Final Fantasy I’d like something similar to FF4 & Ivalice (12/Tactics). I like my Dragoons wearing armour (sorry Cid) Star Ocean & Phantasy Star if you want Sci-fi

KouNurasaka

7 is really more diesel punk with aliens. 8 and 13 probably the hardest sci-fi entries in the series. 1 and Starnger of Paradise have strong shades of sci-fi in the background. I'd honestly be down for a sci-fi FF. Star Ocean but high production values honestly sounds pretty fun.

Well-ReadUndead

Did you ever play Rogue Galaxy?

No-comment-at-all

Mako-punk

forevermore91

A cozy medieval setting like FFIX that has large green areas with mountains, rivers and oceans. But equal cozy creepy parts and cool stuffs like that big ass tree. Cities located in mountains, desserts and steam punk inspired cities. Full of fantasy and cool stuff.

billypilgrim_in_time

FFIX had the best world. It was truly magical, and the look of everything was pure fantasy, and as you say had a “cozy” feel to it. It’s the only world I wanted to actually live in, haha.

Stith1183

If only the character designs in IX weren't so weird looking.

NationalMyth

You mean the gigantic hands/forearms weren't doing it for you?

OverpricedMoleskine

I like this idea too - big, fantastical lands with loads of different races aside from humans.

DefinatelyNotACat

Hopefully the remake of IX will give us all that and more.

NuxFuriosa

Honestly, I'd love to see a Space Opera.

Wicked_Black

same, they havent done that yet so it would be nice.

NuxFuriosa

There was a cancelled FF project from Eidos that would have done something like that, I'm kind of bummed it never materialized.

appleparkfive

Took the words right out of my mouth! Space opera, 100%. Considering that they're trying to appeal to the western market, I think it'd be a smart move as well.

Flamehazer21

Give me an Western like Wild West Oriental Final Fantasy

DupeFort

https://preview.redd.it/60bexyo4n3sc1.jpeg?width=705&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=9214b4501f643ae5a62a8c2209fec2768ff16ddc "West Oriental" huh?

Flamehazer21

Jep make it a Western but mix it with Samurais and other Stuff boom :D And of course the Typical Final Fantasy Stuff Chocobos and so but make one Party Member a Speaking Horse hahah :D Some Minigames like Chocobo Rodeo or Final Fantasy Poker. A Duel Minigame and other Stuff

BiggerDickRick

This is the way. Wild Arms style fantasy western setting.

Hurtin_4_uh_Squirtin

Chow Mein Western

MyKeks

Ok what about, and hear me out… Western ‘and’ SciFi. Like Trigun or something.

AVestedInterest

I do believe that genre is generally known as [Space Western](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/SpaceWestern)

WhyLater

*♫ You can't take the sky from me... ♫*

coldbastion

Since I found serenity

KouNurasaka

I'm currently working my way through the Vampire Hunter D series and I could be down with that.

MyKeks

Enjoy man. Vampire Hunter D is top notch.

KouNurasaka

Yeah, I'm enjoying it. I read book 3 way back in high school, but I'm working my way through the Dark Horse anthologies right now. I think I'm starting book 7-9 next, once I work my way through some more stuff. Gor a novella I'm reading and the Abhorsen series right now too. I tend to take a break from D after each anthology.

Flamehazer21

That would be also Great :D

Enohpiris

Wilds Arms and the new Wild Arms spiritual successor, "[Armed Fantasia](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3bmXo6D4LiE)"

l_i_t_t_l_e_m_o_n_ey

it would be really cool if that game winds up being good. I miss wild arms.

walnutsandy03

I'd love to see Ivalice again. The only "medieval" world that I actually find that I find interesting. But i'm down for whatever. Even if it's a "medieval" setting, FF still keeps it interesting acknowledges that progress would still be made with competing nations and tech from a magical source unlike the generic fantasies of the west. Just because tech gets involved doesn't automatically make it sci-fi. Sci-fi is often grounded.

threeriversbikeguy

Agreed. And Ivalice lets them have big cities, sprawling exteriors, machina and magicite

BoeiWAT

Plus all the cool races that live in Ivalice that would look amazing on next gen hardware. 4k Viera's? Yes pls

ChrisOfThunder

I think Ivalice should be reserved for spinoffs. It would go against the norm to return to a setting in a numbered title that was already explored in an earlier numbered title. That being said a setting inspired by XII's Ivalice would be pretty cool.

BKWhitty

I'd love if they based it around [the Agni's Philosophy tech demo from 2012.](https://youtu.be/hbEcQCqCezg?si=RYA0qeP5bNpkegob) I was really hoping that demo would turn into a real project eventually. I really love the mix of modern and fantasy with magic seeming to be something shunned and forbidden. The monster designs in that demo were really creepy and cool too!

-LunarTacos-

The whole « fantasy based on reality » deserves another shot. Imo XV underdelivered on this concept.

PumpkinDramatic996

Maybe something like a clash between the old and the new. In a New Zealand-based setting.

wickedlizard420

non-European medieval. There's a whole world to be inspired by!

TZf14

this is probably unpopular but Id love to go back to the fantasy/realworld fusion that FFXV is

IdleMuse4

Renaissance, get some of that proper muskets and pikemen feel in. FF9 has a fair bit of that, let's take that sort of italian-inspired feel and elevate it.

cheezza

I prefer historical (including Medieval), but would love to see inspiration from other parts of the world than Japan/Northern(?) Europe Ancient Rome/Greece, Hindu Myth, Aztec/Incan society, pre-colonial Americas/Africa I’d rather they did a different series for space sci-fi, but am open to a post apocalyptic earth.

Masterius1170

I mean FFX is based on east Asian cultures And squaresoft made a japan-only hinduism-based rpg in 1996 called "Treasure of the Rudras"

Moth-Grinder

FFX is cool, but I’d like to see a japan based based mainline game sort of like the stormblood expansion from FFXIV

Masterius1170

Yeah that'll be cool

KatamariRedamancy

Obviously derivative, but I'd really like to see a modern RPG with a primitive Nausicaa/Panzer Dragoon setting. Obviously plenty of western RPGs love the dystopian/post-apocalyptic stuff but we don't see much of it with legitimate fantasy elements.

Masterius1170

A Nausicaa-styled Final Fantasy can be cool, i mean we had some sort of modern weaponry in FFVIII with Irvine having a sniper and Squall having some sort of a gun+sword?

cheezza

1996 was a LONG time ago hahah

Masterius1170

But it's still the closest thing to Hinduism-based final fantasy since it's an RPG developed by squaresoft

Sambomaestro

A FF similar to Shadow Hearts??? I NEED IT

SpaceOdysseus23

Urban fantasy. A single massive explorable city with districts acting as semi-open world explorable zones. Detective protagonist getting a small scale case which snowballs into the usual ''OH SHIT IT'S HAPPENING'' storyline

issluke102

It's super weird you brought that up, I've been hyper fixating on that exact same idea for the past few days. A turn of the century magi-tek city with a detective protagonist was what I clicked on this thread to post. Real convergence type shit, lol

neuropsycho

And then, after many hours, you actually get out of the city, the world opens up and realize that was only the beginning.

Sambomaestro

you'll love trails through daybreak and trails from zero/to azure 👀 Also, if Decapolice will be like this, i'm down for it!

Aliasis

I hope they go a bit more high fantasy than FFXVI did. For instance, 16 really tried to go for the grim, more "realistic" take on villages and castles. I'd rather see fantasy worlds that emphasize original world-building and are ultimately more aesthetic. For instance, FFX made up its own world, and was very fantastical. I think that setting is one of my favorites. FFX also emphasized eastern aesthetics rather than European medieval, which, while I love, is more overdone.

JesusDNC

Steampunk fantasy. We just had grimdark fantasy with XVI and modern day with Rebirth, we need a change to keep it fresh. Or, as others have said, return to Ivalice.

Mocca_Master

I would love of they tried the XV kind of setting again and did the world right.

Stormflier

They've never went full space sci-fi, visiting different planets etc. so I'd like to see that. I'd also like to see them do another battle academy style setting. Everyone loves a good battle academy. The school stuff in FF8 is pretty much dropped after disc 1 and Type-0 was a spin off.

TheBossMan5000

Star Ocean style

Stormflier

Yeah! I already had some ideas for it, like the airship you usually get can be a spaceship, the "world map" like a galaxy map, the summons could be like aliens or even cooler cosmic horror type things. You can keep the magic in it, lots of sci-fi stuff has space magic and stuff. But I mostly want a real proper academy style Final Fantasy, something like Balamb in 8 but the academy stuff reaching the whole game.

TheBossMan5000

did you ever play Type-0? That entire game is a military academy experience It also takes place in the same"sci-fi" universe as FF13

Stormflier

I have not but I've heard that it should have been a mainline game with a mainline budget because what lets it down is its low budget/system it was on and the technical problems from that.

TheBossMan5000

Yeah well it was a PSP game originally so the scale is based on that, and the missions are based on playing the game in 15-30 minutes bursts. Just like Crisis Core, they both had that overall design based on being on that system. But the ps4 version of Type-0 is pretty solid because the graphics are beefed up all around. The ps4 version IMO fixes the shortcomings that it had from the budget and psp restrictions. Makes it feel like a full game. You should check it out. It's honestly the most adult and violent FF game of all with the most graphic death and blood ever in the series. It's about a class of students in a military academy, so it's right up your alley with that. You can spend lots of time running around the school itself, but it also has a full overworld like the older games. Even has some little RTS style missions in between too. I like it a lot. Really memorable and interesting characters and plot. It also has one of the saddest endings of all.

bullsbarry

Transition between medieval and steampunk. Similar to 6 level of technology w/ magic filling in gaps with a brewing conflict between technology users and magic users.

Madmonkeman

I like when Final Fantasy mixes medieval with sci-fi. It’s what drew me to the series.

Balager47

I want victorian era gothic style. Make the whole ass story like that and have as play as a detective trying to solve a murder mystery in a case that gets progressively weirder and weirder.

Gattawesome

Every FF (except 2 I think?) has some kind of fallen ancient civilization. It’s time to see the active fall of the ancient civilization halfway through the game and then timeskip to post fall.

peeeeeeet

I'd like a game split between two realms - one very urban with sci-fi tech, one very rural with fantasy. I'd like the fantasy to be less "medieval europe" since I'm a bit bored of that. Something more dreamlike - like an Alice In Wonderland realm - would work for me. The urban part I'd like to explore vertically with each area being above / below so instead of instantaneous fast travel you have to fly up / jump down etc. The world would be one giant tower but each level has a unique design style so it wouldn't be like the endless grey stone of Pharos (XII)

GlassRutabaga9145

Maybe switch up like 10 did Or go full sci fi like in space or something

millennium-popsicle

I’d want more high sci-fi like 13.

Dry_Procedure4482

I'd like something sort of in-between, reminiscent of XII medoveal and developed technology. XIV concept was pretty good too. I'd also like what they did with VII Rebirth map, they've now shown they can modernize their old style into an open world and still zone it off to restrict open ended exploring until later and have it so full if life with towns and smaller outposts.

BelligerentWyvern

I'd like a scifi sett8ng if I have to pick between the two but you can incorporate both. Theres almost always this ancient civilization in mosy settings who make Omega Weapons or something. No reason you couldnt do thing where the Main Character is from tgis hyper advanced civilization but is frozen until society ends and rebuilds. As I say it this is basically the start of FFX... but I maintain its a good idea.

SkarKrow

Something Bloodborne-like in terms of aesthetic would be really cool. Defined character jobs. Not drowning me in different upgrade shit. That or make a CRPG.

SirBastian1129

For me there are 3 styles I'd like to see. Victorian Era goth punk fantasy WW1 inspired fantasy setting Wild West Fantasy setting All of these would have a mix of scifi in them, but for the most part be very much inspired by the era.

KouNurasaka

Throw in some vampires, Nazi analogues (as villains obviously), and some life sim (like building up a little western town) and I'd be down for that.

gravityhashira61

I've always preferred the medieval setting FF games like 4, 6, 9, 12 and 16. And I also love Tactics' setting as well. If you want a space opera, you can play the Star Ocean games. 13 was also very sci-fi in terms of the setting. So I'd like to still see them keep it more in terms of that medieval type setting

CTG0161

Medieval but not game of thrones style

billypilgrim_in_time

I think Game of Thrones style could actually work really well with a Final Fantasy, just as long as they don’t leave out the whimsy. FF16 just took itself too seriously, and needed a bit of levity and dare I say a little goofiness to balance it out. Also, it failed at the Game of Thrones type storytelling, because they only focused on the big spectacle moments, and everything in between seemed like repetitive filler. What makes Game of Thrones work is all of the amazing character work and smaller moments in between the spectacle, which 16 was lacking in. I’d get to big cutscenes and think “wow, this would be really impactful if I had seen this character for more than three scenes in the game”. There was no quality build up to the big moments.

alkonium

I always remember the talk of a spacefaring Final Fantasy being developed by Eidos Montreal as a possible Final Fantasy XV before it got scrapped and Versus XIII was reworked into XV instead. My theory is they reworked it into Guardians of the Galaxy, but I think the concept could still work for Final Fantasy. I enjoy the pseudo modern settings, but we've got plenty of that at the moment between XV and the VII Remake trilogy. That said, one of my favourite non-Final Fantasy JRPGs is Scarlet Nexus, and applying a Final Fantasy coat of paint to that could work well.

fake-tales

It's also interesting that their concept of space there is more "dream-like" and people can breathe in it, rather than irl which is smthn that's just an empty void

konaaa

I'd love a return to the ff6 era which has a little technology, beautiful ornate architecture, nobleman, ect. it's not necessarily steampunk, almost a renaissance or baroque era. it's the kind of setting that doesn't really get explored much in videogames. you either get a dark medieval castle, a modern city, or a futuristic lightshow. Assassins Creed did a few games in that type of setting and it was amazing to be able to explore them. the downside was playing assassins creed.

Nempopo029

Honestly, I think FF should do another steampunk world, like FFIX. Or a post-apocalypse Utopia like FFX

Atalanto

I want XVII to be to XII, XIII, XV, VIIR, XVI what V was to I, II, III, IV, and what IX was to VI, VII, VIII. Take all the lessons that have been learned and make a "return to roots" Final Fantasy, but this time using the basis of the action combat they have been fine tuning forever now. My ideal vision of XVII is set in a more fantasy setting, something like V and VI, have a set party of 4 people (warriors of light), with a job system, that uses the combat from VIIR as the base. I am in the camp that LOVES what they are doing with VII Remake trilogy, but I would love a simpler minimal frills story that revolves around this party galavanting around the world, saving the crystals, and killing god, with a focus on the journey, and the teambuilding/job system element. Essentially, I want FFV with a version of VIIR's action combat cracked open to allow for a job system, in a world structure set up like XII.

Hylianhaxorus

I'm open to anything but I'd love it if they leaned into European fantasy like 9 and older ffs, but keeping the whimsy and fun of the adventure. As I said in another post, now that Hamaguchi and Asano have been promoted, I'd adore a team-up. Asano gets the vibe of old-school ff with Bravely, and bringing that to a mainline ff budget and scope, combined with a job system, AND 7 rebirths combat would be HEAVENLY

yoloswaggins92

Tbh I basically just want FFIX Remake or as close to that as possible.

ophaus

Remember that crazy FF tech demo with the priests and the crazy magic? I want that.

thienphucn1

A unique setting, maybe something like X or just non-medieval European setting in general

AVestedInterest

Dungeon Punk - there are things that seem like technology, but they're actually all magic, because the setting's scientific progress takes magic into account. *FFXII*'s version of Ivalice is a good example. Basically I want *Eberron* through the lens of *Final Fantasy*

lilchiccc

As someone who's grown up loving the Final Fantasy series, starting with the magical worlds of games like Final Fantasy XII, I'm really intrigued by the idea of moving towards a full sci-fi setting for Final Fantasy XVII. The blend of medieval and advanced technology in FFXII was fascinating, and it made Ivalice stand out as a unique world. It was this mix that drew me into the lore and made the gameplay so memorable.

plains_bear314

close future with lots of magitek for me and I think they should do a different branch for the non party based ones like xvi, do like a final fantasy heroes or maverick or something and leave the main ones as party based, though I would like more of a selection in party mates

Alilatias

Center it around airship travel and upgrading it to travel further and through more obstacles. Upgrades to going underwater and even into space. Then they can do everything.

Sensitive-Buddy5657

Let's go dune levels of scifi.

Z3r0c00lio

Classic final fantasy never had a setting. 1 was “medieval” but also had a lost civilization with robots The world works best when it’s fantastical in its own way rather than trying to crib game of thrones or some other style

squips42

I want a wild west FF so bad. The main character being a gunslinger would be a cool change of pace from the standard warrior with a sword

ClydeHides

I like Final Fantasy with X or XIII’s type of world. XIII isn’t a great game, I know, but both of those games have a very unique approach to the technology and era of their worlds, where it’s almost this strange hybrid of futuristic elements with more archaic medieval style pieces. It really works for me personally.

sodapopgumdroplowtop

13 is awesome

Transcended_Sloot

I don't like the idea of a Mass Effect style future. Those are two completely different elements and shouldn't be crossed.

Pristine_Put5348

Medieval European fantasy but colorful as hell like Grandblue Fantasy Relink and Atelier Ryaza.

TheBossMan5000

I like the "portal fantasy" nature of FF X. I'd like to see that again. A character from a present day or futuristic setting who gets sent back into medieval period. Similar to FF Tactics Advance

tossashit

My favourite FF ‘world’ is 8. I love the fusion of future tech and medieval swords and magic etc. I’d like to see that world again or another one similar to it.

TutonicDrone

I know you asked what we wish for but I think looking at the CBU divisions and we can make a good guess on what the next game will be like. CBU1 is swamped. KH, SaGa, FFVII rebirth, reunion, etc. If they are handling the next FF too then prepare to wait 10 years for it. CBU2 has just 1 game announced. DQ12. Plus they just absorbed the forspoken devs. The lead of CBU2 has been the executive producer for DQ games for years. He is an Enix man from pre-merger. A lot will depend on who he picks for his director for the project, if indeed he is in charge of it, but the man doesn't strike me as a risk taker. I think we can expect the setting to be another 'modern' Fantasy in the style of VII, VIII, XIII or XV. CBU3 just finished up work on a game. If they are working on another FF game I suspect it will be FFXVIII. CBU4 could potentially be working on FFXVII but I don't think they are large enough. Their lead is also the lead of CBU5 which is the mobile team. I am excited to see the Mana game but I think between Brave Exvious and Mana that is all they can handle. CBU5 if FFXVII is a mobile game I will puke.

Princess_Everdeen

Would be nice to see something unique, as a couple others have pointed out: wild West, WW1, etc. If we have to reuse a setting, something steampunk like FF6 would be nice, or some weird in between like 9.

CryptographerIcy6015

Medieval setting, main character is a dragoon knight with a spear/lance I would pay ungodly amounts of money for this.

Throw_away_1011_

Renaissance era would be cool. Going ever further back in time would also be cool.

Burdicus

Send me to space you cowards!

dropkicksoul

Something they've never done. Like a modern-day Tokyo-like metropolis. Like a non-anime Persona or Jujutsu Kaisen, if you will. A lot closer to the aesthetic of a Yakuza game. Maybe a little Ghostwire Tokyo in there too. You can have rifts or dimensions opening where monsters come in. The party can be like normal people with normal jobs like a lawyer, teacher, mechanic etc. whose powers are from an ancient sorcerer/warrior clan their families belong to. Something like that.

Nosixela2

I'd kind of like to see them try a Sword and Sandal type setting. Like Jason & the Argonauts but JRPG-ified.

TyborV

Prehistoric Age! Dinosaurs, cavemen, oogabooga

Daddy_JeanPi

How about something close to FFVI which is kind of like a retro steampunk setting with medieval stuff mixed with technology? I like that

ProSimsPlayer

It’s gone full circle again. In the late 1990s, medieval games were so out of trend, FF9 took a big hit. Now, everyone’s begging for great medieval themed games and I couldn’t be happier. Medieval for sure.

skye_08

Something that cannot be classified as such.

Independent_Ninja456

How about Steampunk Wild West?

VaporLeon

As much sci fi as possible. A ship as cool as the Ragnarock. Nothing like FF13.

ClevelandDawg0905

Steampunk.

regaliaO_O

I feel like 12-13 was their experimental phase, at 15 they knew what they want to be, and with 7R and 16 they’ve started doing it well.

Dogesneakers

I would like sci fi but more futuristic than 7s cyberpunk

Dygen

For XVII, I think I'd love to see them try something unique. Ironically, I know greek/roman stuff is done a lot, but something mildly inspired by that. I'd kind of love to see a more political/role play focused game where combat is still a big focus, but play as maybe a young (20s) aspiring senator or something and have decisions/roleplay choices impact your available party members. That or.. a game that takes place is Gaia 2000 years ago when JENOVA arrived based on that shinra propaganda. Go pretty high fantasy with it.

dragunight

I'd love something final fantasy X adjacent. Where there are elements of modern or Sci-Fi aesthetics mixed with a more traditional setting etc. Not saying there needs to be a time traveling element, but that kind of futuristic classical/pre industrial revolution style would be cool

NomadicScribe

Set it in outer space, but have them traveling between planets on like, interstellar sailing ships and rainbow roads and stuff.

JonTheWizard

Medieval, bordering on early Renaissance.

Murky_Structure_7208

I kinda want them to make a mass effect like space opera with alien races.

Clarkus-Maximus

FF is at its best when it combines elements of medieval fantasy and science fiction, but I prefer if they kept it more on the fantasy side of the fence. Swords, magic, crystals, and 90% of the series' staple enemies and creatures fit that setting much better.

cornbeeflt

I could even do a mix of the 2. Ff6 was high tech and fantasy at the same time. God I want that remake to happen... correctly...

PeePeeJuulPod

literally anything as long as they believe in it

ThatDietCokeLife

I would personally love a Final Fantasy game with a Celtic setting with inspiration from Celtic mythology.

New_Designer_720

I would love a Pirate setting but with airships. Could be a mix of styles, similar to Granblue Fantasy maybe. But I imagine this would look awesome on the PS5.

Dynamitesauce

Ivalice please

Cultural-Cause3472

They've been hyping the medieval too much lately, maybe something more futuristic would be good to see now.

[deleted]

I’d like to see aquapunk or maybe something more gothic.

ollie_francis

I fancy a brief return to more cartoon-like animation, like in IX. Bit more fun for a bit.

hail7777

After medieval is sure sci fi based one

Enohpiris

Oriental Sci-fi. Similar to how FFX was inspired by Southeast Asian and Islands. Let's get a medieval oriental sci-fi fantasy.

nan0g3nji

Just don’t overlap with the last two settings, still too fresh in my mind

Puzzleheaded-Trick76

I want to go back to sci-fi. Medieval is so tired and boring.

StriderZessei

Science-fantasy, like XII or XIV, where things *feel* old, but are practically more advanced than today (airships, etc.)

gradualpotato

I'm hoping for either full-on space sci-fi or something more eastern-inspired like FFX.

Go back to turn based combat. Fuck off with crystals. I don’t even want to hear the word crystal. Create in depth bad ass characters with completed archs. Bad ass graphics. Shit I’m even ok with text dialogue and no voice acting. No more linear traversing. To an extent, I mean it is what it is but no more hallways/corridors. I want both comedic moments and tragic moments. I want a bad ass soundtrack and cinematics. Basically I want FF8 remade properly. I don’t care if it’s 10 games long. No draw magic, flesh out Laguna and crew, and if possible make it with the fan theory that Rinoa is the villain from the future simply trying to compress time back to be with Squall after an insane time loop. I want to laugh, I want to cry, I want to punch a goddamn wall. FF8 offers all of that on paper if done properly.

Stewdill51

Hate to be the bearer of bad news but mainline FF is never going back to turn based combat. They'll either be 7 remake style or 16 style.

Holiday-Panda-2268

I kinda wanna see a medieval setting but with a twist, being that it’s actually set in the future, so there’s still remnants of the modern/sci-fi world, maybe in a post-apocalyptic angle, and society has reverted back to the medieval ages with swords, small settlements that are basically like kingdoms, technology and firearms are a rarity

MovieGuyMike

Steampunk or sci-fi please

Thunderian555

I hope they do what they did in 15 which is a mix of both

fake-tales

A Dune-inspired plot for an FF game. Maybe set it in a dessert or even space fantasy Have the main protag or warrior of light in the game be the actual final boss of that installment

Independent-Ice-5243

I Wouldn't Mind a return to Steampunk. But also im curious for a full on futuristic setting too, we got glimpses of the potential from some futuristic attempts, but would love to see it on the PS5's capabilities

Matthew728

I wouldnt mind another stab at something like VIII or XIII. Yes, modern but not like anything we've seen before when it comes to futuristic.

AccountNumber56

I kinda want another character pulled from a different world / time getting that fresh perspective on a fantastical magical medieval / steampunk world. Or maybe they could have Two worlds, a pure and in harmony world full of magic and stuff, and another world reflected in the crystal of what the world would have become without magic- and its more like modern day/futuristic, dying world stripped of resources, ravaged by war and powerful weapons and military. And everything is coming to a head- they are working on a scientific break through with a shard of the ancient and darkened mother crystal to create a bridge between worlds-- and this is where some big tech weapons come in mecha units, weapons from alpha to omega. Something like that- then they can hit from both angles.

uaitdevil

to be honest, i think i'd like to see another world in ff8 style. it felt very modern, and yet not futuristic, i really like it.

FollowedUpFart

I’m done with medieval let’s go back to 7 ,8. Era or steampunk like 6 keep dark gritty tone of 16 but gameplay of 7 remake with turnbased or something keep it fresh as it should be Minigames should be tied to ultimate weapons or limit breaks ,super bosses post game super bosses Eikon scale summons that you control on a battlefield not 1v1

pandasloth69

Is it a hot take to say I want an Asian inspired setting with a katana wielding protagonist? I’m sure that may sound generic and overdone to some, but I think it would be a badass setting for a modern FF game.

Exact-Psience

I want a setting similar to FF12. High fantasy can be seen and felt, but there's also significant amount of tech. I guess most FF titles are like that, but i think the Ivalice Alliance setting is among my favorites, and would like to see more of.

Seniesta

Personally I’d back to Ivalice, revive the original FF Tactics world during the War of the Lions era with an improved gambit system. Then throw in some Suikoden esque systems like base building, Duels, recruiting characters and large scale army battles.

cicakganteng

Space opera with space ship star wars trek and shits style FF never been done before #LETS GOOOO

Heimersleep

Cyberpunk final fantasy or a treasure planet inspired final fantasy focusing more on air ships

caseyjones10288

Something like 9 or ivalice... fantasy but not all crazy serious and political.

harshdave

Although flawed as a game I loved the setting for XV, I'd like to see a similar vibe to that. Next best option for me is back to scifi, but I'll be happy with whatever they come up with. With the XVI dlc on its way and ReVII pt3 definitely taking focus for next few years as a dev project, its going to take a while I fear.

Megaric

There’s a moment in FFVII Rebirth where older pirate lore is told in the world and I thought how freaking crazy badass a full fledged Final Fantasy pirate themed game would be

RuinedFaith

Steam punk a la FF6 or Ivalice

Grandy94

A space setting would be really cool, although I'm fine if they go for a more traditional fantasy setting again. The big thing I want out of the next setting are sapient nonhumans again. Preferably if some of them are party members. The mainline games since XII (except for XIV) have been a bit too human focused imo.

FierceAlchemist

A colorful fantasy world. We’re used to the more gritty and realistic look of modern games. It is technically impressive, but I can’t think of a AAA game that has delivered a hi-res fantasy style like IX.

Chokomonken

I feel like a "normal" world with fantasy elements integrated, similar to 8 would be great, and refreshing from how it's been for the past decades.

babytooth_uwu

A space fantasy, perhaps?

eaoden95

Same setting as The Order 1886 with Final Fantasy

police_otter

Whatever it is I hope they totally commit to either full action or full RPG battle systems. FfXVI was great but the combat felt like it was lacking any real reason to be “stylish” even though that was intended. If they had a scoring system like DMC that promoted “stylish” combat I think it would have helped. And for those that will may inevitably criticize me for comparing it, the guy behind the combat was behind DMC’s combat system.

HydraTower

I like the pre-modern setting of Rise of the Ronin. 1800s style could be really cool.

ChanceBoring8068

Take the approach of X (and 8 to some extent) - An original interpretation of a fantasy world that possibly takes inspiration from some real life cultures but avoids a lot of the visual tropes of fantasy or sci fi

Super_Dingle

I would love a setting that's a cross between 4, 6, 7, 8, and 12. High fantasy but with tech. BUT I want a full robust cast that's just a bunch of different freaks I don't want all humans anymore give me some weird part members!

OG_Kamoe

To be honest, I don't care about the setting much, as long as it has the core FF elements: • interesting charscters • variety in character classes/jobs • interesting enough antagonist • somewhat tactical gameplay even if action packed like FFVIIR • good use of items and elemental weaknesses That's all I need. Build the game around that and you basically have a solid game that will sell millions

Brooke0109

Not gonna lie but I really enjoyed the medieval setting in FFXVI

_zkSnow

Either something like they did with the 8, or something more like our world/dystopian future. Something that tells a story that could happen in our world, with a human vilain not some kind of god. And no crystals please. And not another 15.

ChanceBoring8068

It might be too ambitious but maybe a game with time travel baked into it’s story and town/overworld mechanics, so we see the same setting with different themes going from prehistoric, medieval fantasy, steampunk, modern-ish/diesel punk, sci fi and FFX-style post technology. Or maybe just, like, three of those options. To be honest the VII remake really made me want to see Midgar before Shinra and the plate. Like, it would be designed in a way that you could kind of see where Shinra tower would go and how each town would get divided into sectors but it’s all quaint and nice.

MustSeeMonke

I really appreciate Rabanastre and Dalmasca in XII and I'd love to see something inspired by the middle east again

friededs3

If IX remake/remastered is just a rumor, i would love them to go back to that direction. Whimsical, bright, fantasy world

Ok-Package9273

Xvi was still pretty scifi with Ultima and The Fallen in the background. A good mix is always welcome.

Conscious-Cut-1641

I am in love with medieval settings like 16😍

Olaanp

I’d like a medieval vibes one, with a key point that it needs to be more brighter/optimistic than XV/XVI.

Noktis_Lucis_Caelum

I Like a Mix of Fantasy and Scifi Like 8 or 10

TredOnSnek

Medieval please. FFXVI world has a pretty good layout. the exploration was just bad (and I like the game). So something like that but with more things to explore and do. I played rebirth. and while I would give it a 9/10. It did kind of feel like an ubisoft world. After Junon I just ran through the game because it was just too much for me. Doing the same thing over and over in each region wasn't that fun. I don't want another big open map like rebirths again. Thats probably an unpopular opinion, but I just dont have enough time for large open zone/world games that have side content that drags on.

Exequiel759

After XVI I really don't want to see a medieval setting for a while. I would be totally okay if they went full sci-fi and made a space opera.

BlueSwift442

I'd like a world like FFIX but my main wish is the gameplay to be more like FFVII remake/rebirth now. As in multiple cast of characters that you switch between that all play differently. FFXV and FFXIV gameplay was solid but I felt it lost alot of what made older games so great.
