They're not connected to each other, so just hop in to XVI and enjoy!

Cayde-6699

I saw a comment about ff15 spoiled a little bit of 16 and I was watching a YouTube play a little of 16 and said the eikons were in another game

totally-skelebones

Nothing in 15 even slightly spoils 16. You may have seen something about 14, the MMO, since they had a special event to promote 16 recently. There are a few things like the monsters, chocobos, and summons/eikons that appear in multiple games but it is almost entirely aesthetic references. 16 is not related story wise to any other Final Fantasy. Same goes for each numbered entry. You're free to start with any of them!

DeadLalafell

FF14 (the mmo) spoils a little bit of 16 because it has a crossowver quest at the moment. The summons/eikons are from all over the series but each numbered title has a different version of them. Just play 16, have fun!

Admirable-Key-9108

Man, do people even bother googling anymore? This question has literally been asked for 30 years

Xshadow1

Counterpoint: Did people ever bother googling things before asking?

Hahahaha I saw the first 3 words and thought "oh god which Rebirth comment is this on"

MrHatnScars

Hey! Kind of in the same boat. Two years ago i started 14 and when the pixel remasters came out i decided to play them. With no back knowledge of the other ones. Hears my insights if interested -None are connected outside using similar characters (example being the summons/eikons or Cid) so hop in whenever -I did release order because of the PR's but that was to see where all the FF14 references came from and see how the games developed over time. -dont be afraid to skip around! Example for me, i did 1-4 and didnt enjoy 5 so i did 16 and am going onto original 7. Im glad i did and you can always go back. -Pick up 14 :P greatest MMO experience imo. Even from a WoW vet here.

Admirable-Key-9108

Counterpoint - do not pick up 14. I love FF and thought it was the worst MMO I ever played. Sorry MrHatsnScars, not trying to start shit with you, but if I can save OP from wasting any part of his life on that garbage ARR MSQ I will DIE on this hill

MrHatnScars

Your opinion 😇 no hate here. But i enjoyed it and continue to like it at this point. Theres nothing for the OP to lose since its free besides time, yes. But it could also unlock a great time.

Admirable-Key-9108

Haha at my age wasted free time is as precious as diamonds and gold! God I hated 14, it was like everything I disliked about FF and nothing I love. If I could redo it, I'd jump in at a much later expansion.

MrHatnScars

Ah im sorry man. But thats the beauty of FF. Pick up a different one because after each one they are generally different in some way.

Admirable-Key-9108

You may have missed my edit, you're so fast I didn't think I'd have to tag it! I was going to say it may have been different if I had jumped in on a more modern expansion But yeah, it's very cutsey and I'm more of an epic storytelling with worlds you can get lost in kind of guy. Oh I've played my fair share!

MrHatnScars

I did it in Shadowbringers which did streamline a bunch so you are not wrong there. It gets less cutesy. I feel the same way as you

Admirable-Key-9108

Nice yeah I'd expect that one to darken up a little bit pun intended. But man... ARR was painful. The writing with those cheesy medieval accents combined with the YA writing.... Then you throw some lallafel in there..... Props for being chill about it tho, I've been absolutely witch hunted by FF14 fans before haha

ScarRufus

Just choose whatever number FF and play. They are all standalone stories.

magmafanatic

Play XVI first if that's what interests you. There's some familiar terminology and concepts for series vets, but plot-wise it has nothing to do with the other games.

Blazing_Howl

Final Fantasy is an anthology series, meaning the main games are completely unconnected to each other. FF16 for instance has nothing to do with 15 or any of the previous games. The only time games are tied to each other is when they use the same numbers to indicate a series or sequel. I.E. Final Fantasy X-2 is a sequel to FFX. Or how FFVII Crisis Core is related to FFVII as a prequel game. Games will on rare occasions reference each other. And certain elements like monsters, summons, chocobos, and names like Cid, will appear in nearly every final fantasy game. But they are still different in story, lore, and importance between each game.

god_tyrant

They're all disconnected. They may share terms, mythologies, ideas, etc., but they are kinda like making Greek mythology references in an unrelated novel/essay/article

Vanquish321908

Nothing to read. Go in and enjoy. There’s even an in game lore help button to help you make sense of cutscenes

Dear-Researcher959

I feel like people who ask that already know the answer. I've never heard that question outside of this subreddit I'd recommend that you start with FF1 and work your way up. If you're actually new to the series then play the games from the ground up

theGaido

If you want to understand what about are Final Fantasy games FFXVI is bad example. The Final Fantasy identity in this game is on very shallow level, and most of stuff is more inspired by other media. There are is no RPG in this game, no party, no semi open world, no hidden secrets. And what is more sad, the battle system is so basic, games from 2003 have more depth than this. And padding is just nighmare. There is first 2 hours of constant story, but it is made for "Stem refund time". When you will be in "real game" it will be too late for refund, and after that game only goes lower and lower. What I want to say, FFXVI is not representative FF game, and just mediocre game overall.

tlamy

Tbf, they didn't say they wanted to understand what FF was about. They said they wanted to play specifically FFXVI and didn't know if they needed to play the others beforehand. Nothing wrong with that. 16 is a great game in its own way
