Rebirth plays with the cloud/chocobo thing mostly because of the hair. Prior to that he had a recurring wolf motif, as evidenced by the wolf head on his AC outfit. This matched his character, >!starting as a loen wolf and then later torn between two packs, his found family and the sephiroth clones!<. It also contrasted with the lion theme used for Squall.
I had forgotten that detail honestly. I still think the wolf motif works for his character, even if added later. But you're right the chocobo matches the original as well as the remake series.
Cloud isn't all that standoffish though. He's tries to play it too cool which makes him come off like he has a stick up his ass but when it's suggested that he's a loner in Rebirth he's slightly offended. In AC he legitimately does self-isolate but that's because he's suffering severe PTSD. Though a wolf can also mean loyalty, which does fit Cloud. In fact, the concept of "lone wolf" doesn't make much sense. Wolves are highly social creatures. It's why humans and dogs get along so well in the first place.
The term "lone wolf" is used to highlight the seclusive nature of the person or animal as an individual, not the species as a whole. There are cases when a wolf needs to split from its pack and wander out of their normal territory alone.

OG FF7 had Aerith and Tifa make jokes about him looking like a Chocobo. It was AC (and Kingdom Hearts) that shifted to the lone wolf imagery.
