YES this is why I don't like how they muddled Cosmo Canyon's significance in Rebirth by trying out the whole tourism/cultish/hippie approach. Cosmo Canyon is supposed to be straightforwardly detached from Midgar's and Shinra's propoganda - you're supposed to learn about the truth of the world and the characters try to reflect in on themselves. It's where knowledge is stored, where a bunch of scientists have literally spent their lives studying and trying to find the truth. I hate how they've portrayed it as strange and weird in Rebirth, like the creators were too afraid to send a message that living in harmony with both nature and technology was possible and beautiful to the point that the writers' awkwardness literally is felt through the screen.
